DSTV IS A CHEAT EXPLOITING NIGERIANS... SUBSCRIBERS LAMENT ON UNBEARABLE TARIFF Subscribers of DSTV, the Pay TV service operated by Multichoice, have threatened to institute a class action suit against the South African company for allegedly burdening them with unfair tariff regime and poor services. The subscribers also accused the company of exploitative and discriminatory tariff unlike what obtains in its home country, South Africa. Chuks Pinnwa, a lawyer, said a number of the company subscribers are massing against the company and that a class action lawsuit is efficient way to achieve justice for the large number of people. Pinnwa also berated the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) the apex regulatory body of broadcasting in Nigeria and Consumer Protection Council (CPC) for not doing enough to protect the interest of subscribers. “In organized societies and even in South Africa where Multichoice came from, there are law and order; we cannot continue to wait for these regulators who are busy doing nothing when Nigerians are subjected to substandard services and world’s most unfriendly tariff” Pinnwa added. Nigeria CommunicationsWeek gathered that class action lawsuits are increasingly becoming very efficient in getting companies to pay for negligence of the service or unfair practices. Subscribers are also asking Multichoice, the near monopoly Pay TV operator to introduce the pay-as-you-go subscription to allow them get value for their money; give them an option of choice; as well as enable them control their consumption. Only recently too, Consumer Protection Council (CPC) lent its voice and advised the cable television company to introduce pay-as-you-go subscription for its subscribers. At a recent between the CPC, and management of DSTV, the council, said the time was ripe for the introduction of the pay-as-you-go subscription in the interest of millions of subscribers of the satellite television. CPC sought to know the reason why this form of subscription could not be introduced in Nigeria as it has been done in other climes for the economic well-being of consumers. Multichoice Nigeria Limited however said that the firm did not have the platforms to implement pay-as-you-go system of payment but promised to look into it. Besides the suggested introduction of the pay-as-you-go subscription, the Council also canvassed for some form of compensation to subscribers for loss of transmission signals, usually experienced by them during adverse weather conditions, particularly rainy season, known as "rain fade". Also, MultiChoice had in August announced an upward review of its subscription fees and the subscription fees are: DStv Family, from N2, 800 to N3, 000; DStv Compact, from N4, 800 to N5, 000; DStv Compact Plus, from N7, 000 to N7, 500 and DStv Premium, from N10, 000 to N11, 000. MultiChoice said the price increase had been necessitated by ongoing increases in the company’s operational and ancillary costs which include: content acquisition and development; technical infrastructure; satellite lease; facilities and maintenance. |
i read this and i concluded Nigerians will not suffer when digital transition sets in, let's pray GOTV and DSTV will do something similar |

@livapul86; you can't term this to be a useless thread, forum like this brings to fore information and matters that concerns our country and most importantly our individuality. Yes, competition boils down to the satisfaction of consumers, but Nigeria has been classified as a nation where anything works... you should see what Uganda government is striking against illegal telecommuniucation and broadcasting operators... 2015 would witness the end of analogue existence, shouldn't we be creating a reliable and trustable ground for our broadcasting industry... don't forget the effect of media to every common man and a country as a whole. How many advance countries do you know its information and broadcasting industry is being handled by foriegners? Even if we're are not that strong now, it shouldn't give room to junks. Having read that article, i proceeded in my findings... Gotv is truly under investigation, but what really matters is the realistic mission of NBC and their utmost loyalty in keeping the integrity of this nation. |

Just like what most people thought was a fluke and unrealistic, STARTIMES, the number one and originally liscensed DTT operator in Nigeria broke doubt as it declares its 2 MILLION NAIRA WINNER in its just concluded "WIN 2 MILLION NAIRA PROMO" The amazing drama started with the usual weekly draw that grants great gifts like the new StarTimes mobile phone TV, Gps Car TV, portable TV, CRT TV and LCD TV (Winth in-built decoder)to lucky winners,it then later unveils the star prize winner OF N100,000; MR BUSAYO .T. The StarTimes "WIN 2 MILLION NAIRA PROMO" which began on the 16th of july was initiated to commemorate the succesful operation of StarTimes for two solid years as the sole liscensed DTT operator in Nigeria, in its quest to ensure optimum satisfaction of its subscribers, StarTimes decided to reward its users with a huge cash prize of TWO MILLION NAIRA. It was a new dawn for Mayowa Osehinde yesterday 10th of September when he was called by the brand manager; Mr Bayo Okeowo who tipped him with jokey questions on how he will feel if his boss decides to stretch a cheque of a million naira at him, of course Mayoma's response was like every doudting thomas breed, he chukled ans muted his response, the brand manager continued wyning him and finally declares him as the GRAND PRIZE WINNER OF 2 MILLION NAIRA in the StarTimes "WIN 2 MILLION NAIRA PROMO" The atmospehers was saturated with whisling, screams and applauses,Mayowa Osehinde was overwhelmed, his inexpressible excitement could be felt through the phone, he was later told to come down to the head of StarTimes at Fatai Atere Matori the next day to confirm his winning. Well, Obama was tagged "Audacity of Hope" when he emerged the United State President... and at least lived up to expection as a democrat. Obama campaign against romney is gaining groung coz of his attention to the grass root... This guy currently appears to be a "a mass figure" so to speak, reason, we don't know. Whatever you intend tagging his statement; imperialism, colonization or whatever, haven't we been imperialised, colonized and sufferized by our leaders? There's nothing new in what Obama has said, all my waiting for is ACTION...Let's see it happen, if it take OBAMA to make Nigeria great again.. Oya now |
If at all they are strong enough and eligible for that, why operating without liscense, this's pure invention theft, they could be banned for it... StarTimes in its own small way has been able to put laugter in the mouth of Nigerians who never knew what pay-tv is due to the way the the BIG SOUTH AFRICAN DSTV made pay-tv a treasure million feets below sea level... I might consider StarTimes for that alone, business has grown beyong "my profit" but "our profit" Enjoy to let your consumer enjoy, the bottom-line is GOTV should make their stand legal and right for Nigerians... They are not doing too, I love thier initiative, but should be done the right way. |
wow! that sound interesting, but have heard many people hyping StarTimes Classic bouquet, infact you are the first person against it, anyway perception will always vary... I watched the UEFA play-off live on StarTimes (Friend's crib) and other uefa matches will be broadcasted live throughout this season as they've won the right from 2012-2015... I think taht's something quiet interesting. |

I don't think they have liscence of dvbt. Read this by Compass Newspaper; NBC investigates GoTv for alleged illegal operation LAST_UPDATED2 Saturday, 18 August 2012 17:48 Saturday, 18 August 2012 00:00 Written by Dele Alao For years, the Nigeria pay TV market was dominated by DSTV from the stable of Multichoice. Only few Nigerians could have access to the services of the pay TV because of its cost of acquisition and subscription, which were beyond the reach of many average Nigerians. However, in recent time, the market witnessed a dramatic change, especially as the country gears up for the 2015 deadline for countries to migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting. The International Telecommunications Union set a date of June 17 2015 for the transition from analogue to digital television. The Nigerian Government set up an advisory committee to recommend to Government how to carry out the transition. The whole process culminated in the approval of the whitepaper by the Federal Executive Council on the 4th of April 2012. The highlights of the Federal Executive Council briefing was the approval of NTA as the public signal distributor with the provision to license another two private signal distributors. The Honourable Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, at the briefing said; “We would be licensing at least two signal distributors; one will be public signal distributor that will be comprised of the broadcasting access of NTA, FRCN and the VON. We also will be licensing another private signal distributor to provide the necessary competition that will give values to consumers of broadcasting content.” The announcement by the Honourable Minister was cheery news to many indigenous stakeholders who are warming up to participate in the process especially as private signal distributors. Many were hoping the process of selecting the private signal distributors will be transparent, and fair. Curiously a few weeks after the Honourable Ministers’ announcement, GOTV started operation in Ibadan, Oyo State last year. It then launched in Port Harcourt, River State and then Lagos. While the launch of GOTV in Ibadan, Port Harcourt and Lagos may be good news for the subscribers who now have more choice and possibly better and cheaper services, Indigenous stakeholders have been bewildered by the turn of events as nobody seemed to be aware of when the bidding for the private signal distributor was carried out and how GOTV managed to be the winner. Investigations revealed that GOTV do not have a license to provide digital terrestrial television services in Nigeria. Details Nigeria Limited, however posses a Digital Mobile TV license with which it deployed digital mobile TV (DSTV Mobile) in ten Nigerian cities since around 2007. Speculations are rife in some quartres that DSTV Mobile might not have been successful as the owners would want. Many stakeholders are questioning the legitimacy of GOTV operations in Nigeria but Government officials have not been forthcoming with a logical explanation for this turn of events. “As far as we are aware, no DTT license has been granted Multichoice to deploy GOTV in Nigeria and when the time comes to award the one or two private signal distributor licenses, it is expected that all interested parties would be given a fair chance of getting it in a transparent process,” a stakeholder who craved for anonymity said. The stakeholders are asking; Does GOTV possess a license to offer Digital Terrestrial Television Services in Nigeria? If yes, when did the process for selecting GOTV take place and why were all stakeholders not given a fair chance of competing? If GOTV do not possess a Digital Terrestrial Television license, why are they offering the service without any sanction by the regulator? Meanwhile, the Nigerian Compass on Saturday gathered that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) may have commenced full-scale investigations on the operation of GOTV. “We have sent someone to Lagos to investigate the matter,” a highly placed official at NBC told the Nigerian Compass on Saturday last Thursday. Last Saturday, the Nigerian Compass published a story on whether GOTV from the stable of Details Nigeria, a sister company to Multichoice, has the licence to operate Digital Terrestrials Television (DTT) in the country. Spokesperson for Multichoice, Segun Fayose, did not respond to enquiries even as at the time of filing in this report. |
