•Jim Iyke Photo: Sun News Publishing Showpiece Index Nigerian born ace actor, Jim Iyke for some months now has had his hands full with not just acting but singing and playing his ambassadorial role for Globacom. This has resulted in an unrivalled increase in the number of his fans. Despite his fame and stardom, publicist to Jim has revealed that the notable actor is mourning. His precious and highly cherished grandmother Deaconess Felicia Obikelu was recently lost to the cold hands of death in her village in Awka south local government in Anambra State. Jim and his family will release burial details later. As if the death of his grandmother was not enough, Tutupie the Abuja based ex-Rhythm FM presenter and a one time lover of Jim Iyke for some weeks now has simmered in making all forms of threats and accusations at Jim in the papers. She even went as far as withdrawing her statements in one of the papers, but she is back again to launch a renewed assault. In her words “I am back again to tell the world the part I played with Jim and how he messed up. This time I am going harder”. Jim has also been accused on the internet of granting an interview in Ghana making huge references to Tutupie. In a swift reaction, his publicist, Bigsam Media issued a press statement signed by Bosun Bankole that Jim Iyke did not grant any interview in Ghana and so he did not make any reference to anybody. He is ready to defend his fundamental human rights in a law court if she further scandalizes him in the papers. “Our client will not hesitate to go to court if she further scandalizes him in the pages of newspapers because this is a simple case of character assassination. She went to the media to say all the allegations she made against him were false and apologized, but now she is coming back to say another thing. We will not join issues with her but we shall make her and her accomplices face the wrath of the law if she dares says anything about Jim’ the statement reads. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are poised for a showdown over who controls the party’s structure ahead of the 2011 general election. The development comes amid fears that the first casualty of the power struggle would be chairman of the ruling party, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, who is likely to be replaced with a candidate loyal to one of the contending parties. The battle line appears drawn, with the Acting President, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the PDP Reform Group led by the former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, said to be in one camp while the governors, Ogbulafor and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP are in the other. A reliable source close to the corridors of power told Sunday Sun that former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, who has declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2011, is still playing safe and has not identified with any of the camps even though he is said to be sympathetic to the Jonathan camp. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/apr/25/national-25-04-2010-002.htm “You know that Babangida is a smart man. He is watching how the thing is playing out and is not in a haste to support any particular camp yet,” the source, a former presidential aide, informed. He revealed that in the weeks to come, the ruling party would witness an implosion and unprecedented groundswell of intrigues by the opposing camps. According to the PDP chieftain, signs of what to expect have already started emerging with the suspension of 19 top members of the party, including two former Senate Presidents and Speaker, Ken Nnamani, Adolphus Wabara and Aminu Bello-Maisari respectively. The PDP, he contended, has become a battlefield with the calculation that any of the camps able to control the structure would be deemed to have partially won the next presidential election. “But the crisis that would trail the battle for the soul of the PDP is likely to reach the overdrive and would make it inevitable for the contending parties to seek ways out of the logjam,” he said. According to the calculation, those flexing muscles now know that eventually Jonathan would control the party structure but not without a commitment to guarantee a second term for most of the governors who would seek re-election in the next general election. “Politics is give and take. The governors are protecting Ogbulafor because they have his confidence and are sure of his support in 2011. For those who are seeking re-election, they would be guaranteed an automatic ticket while those who have completed eight years would like their preferred candidate to succeed them. “So, what is sure to happen is that they will sacrifice the PDP chairman but that would not be before they get a commitment from the Acting President that their interest would be protected. “The governors are chief executives of their states and they know the powers Jonathan wields at the moment. They know that they cannot win the battle against the man who has what it takes to check their influence,” he added. It was gathered that a trump card the Acting President would use is the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Our source disclosed that being close to Obasanjo, Jonathan is likely to unleash the anti-graft body on the governors to curtail their overbearing influence on the polity. He said that the travails of the former Delta State governor, Chief James Ibori, and officials of the Bayelsa State government in the hands of EFCC were signs of what to expect from the camp of the Acting President. On Thursday, the NWC led by Ogbulafor suspended those at the vanguard of the PDP Reform Forum for alleged anti-party activities. Their suspension, according to the National Secretary, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, was in accordance with Article 21.4 of the party’s constitution. Baraje also disclosed that their case has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further necessary action. Members of the forum had shunned the invitation of the NWC to clear themselves of allegations of anti-party activities. |
Questions have been raised severally on the level of commitment and dedication of players who find themselves in the Super Eagles considering the kind of nerve-racking performance they have churned out in recent times. For Austin Jay Jay Okocha, who captained the Eagles to the Japan/Korea 2002, even though he sounded a bit diplomatic, yet he refused to blame the current generation of Eagles for the ugly trend. “I won’t blame the players if they are not showing enough commitment to the national team,” the skilful midfield maestro began in an interview recently. Continuing, he said: “Our players are used to having the best facilities around. But at the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup, we had our worst outing at the finals because we had the worst preparations before that competition. We also had the worst treatment and above all, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) disbanded the team that qualified for that edition of the World Cup. That was the first time I would experience players being screened for selection into the national team few weeks before a major tournament as big as the World Cup.” The former Bolton skipper also revealed the saddest day of his career and why he refrained from confronting the NFA officials like his predecessor, Sunday Oliseh, even when things appeared to have gone awry. Excerpts: Do you feel that the current Eagles usually show enough passion and determination when playing for the country? You can argue for or against that issue, but for me, I won’t blame the players if they are not showing any form of commitment to national assignments. Our players are used to having the best facilities around. But at the Korea/Japan 2002 for instance, we had our worst outing at the World Cup finals and the reason for that was because we had the worst preparations before that competition. The worst came when the NFA disbanded the original team that qualified the country for the World Cup finals. That was the first time I would experience players being screened for selection into the national team few weeks before a major tournament as big as the World Cup. And then, the flight from London to Japan lasted for over 12 hours. To make matters worse, we flew in the economy class for that horrifying length of time. So, you can’t expect the players to put in their best when their legs were still swollen following the effect of the long hours of flight. Other serious countries that went to the 2002 World Cup sent their officials to Korea and Japan to make adequate arrangement days before the arrival of their teams, but the reverse was the case for Nigeria, as we were asked to travel while the officials stayed back in Nigeria to wait for the approval of funds for the World Cup. In all those problems why didn’t you speak out as the captain of the team? How many people would I fight? The agitation Sunday Oliseh made when he was the captain of the national team landed him in trouble and I never wanted the same fate to befall me. We were warned to be mindful of what we say because at the end of our careers, we would come back to Nigeria. What was the happiest moment of your career? My happiest moment was the day I said it was all over. I looked at myself and realised that I could still walk and play with my friends. Coming out of my football career healthy was fulfilling for me. What about the matches you played? There were few games that would remain quite memorable like winning the Nations Cup in Tunisia in 1994, qualifying for the World Cup finals the same year and winning Olympic gold medal in the football event at the Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games. What of your saddest moment? Losing to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the final of the 2000 Nations Cup at the National Stadium, Lagos was the saddest day of my career. And to add salt to the injury, we didn’t know that Victor Ikpeba’s penalty kick actually crossed the line. You know, I equalised to make it 2–2 in the second half and I was even boasting after scoring the equaliser that how could Cameroon beat us on our home soil. If I had known that we would eventually lose that game, I wouldn’t have boasted after scoring that goal. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/sportsonthehour/2010/apr/25/sportsbreak-25-04-2010-001.htm |
