Currently, in Nigeria, the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) is responsible for regulating and licensing medical laboratory scientists, including microbiologists who graduated from MLS.

The MLSCN was established by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Act 11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2003.
