A 23-year-old Nigerian footballer, Ekundayo Ebenezer Mawoyeka, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match, yesterday, in Turkey.
The Sarayköyspor striker collapsed in the 35th minute of his side’s match against Yeşilköyspor at the Servergazi Stadium and was rushed to the Servergazi State Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
While reacting to the news, the Denizli Amateur Sports Clubs Federation President, Feyyaz Ceşen, who wore Mawoyeka’s jersey, expressed deep sadness

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has reportedly stalled on signing new contract at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has been superb for the Red Devils since he joined them in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid.

He has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid twice – and on both occasions the move has failed to pull through.

However, Express news report that the Spaniard wants an improved deal before extending his stay with the EPL side.

The publication reveals that the shot-stopper currently earns £175,000 a week, but wants to be among top earners with at least £300,000 a week in the bag.

Chile forward Sanchez penned a deal valued around £500,000 a week with add ons and is the highest paid player in English football since his move to Old Trafford from Arsenal in January.

The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and the students union have agreed on new tuition fees following a downward review of the fees announced last week.

Officials of the university and students’ union leaders told newsmen on telephone the latest review followed a meeting involving them and other stakeholders on Friday.

“We are done with the meeting,” the Students’ Union President, Abiodun Oluwaseyi, stated in a text message he sent to newsmen Friday evening.

According to Oluseun, “300-500 level students will now pay N90,000 for indigenes and N100,000 for non-indigenes. The 200 level will remain N120,000 and N150,000 for indigenes and non-indigenes respectively and incoming 100 level indigenes will pay N140,000 while their non indigenes counterpart will pay N170,000.”

Newsmen reported how the university had in July announced that students who are indigenes of Oyo and Osun states would pay N200,000 while others would pay N250,000 from the 2018/19 session.

The announcement led to wild protests by groups of the students in Ogbomoso and Osogbo where the university has campuses.

Apparently influenced by these protests, the university through a mail to the students last week Friday from the office of the Registrar, Jacob Agboola, said the increment had been reviewed downward.

According to the mail, indigenes would pay N140,000 per session while others would pay N170,000.

But some students who spoke with newsmen then condemned the fees regime and the students’ union also threatened to sue the school.



It was against that backdrop that the management met leaders of the students on Friday.

Before the first increment of fees last year after the school was shut down for months by workers over poor funding, returning students who are indigenes of Oyo and Osun states paid N63,500 as tuition fee, while their non-indigene colleagues paid N72,500.

When the school reopened, the present 100-level students from Oyo and Osun states were charged N120,000 while the other 100-level students paid N150,000 as part of the resolution to improve internally generated revenue.

The owner Oyo and Osun state governments last week distanced themselves from the increment announced at that time.

The Registrar, Agboola and the institution’s spokesperson, Lekan Fadeyi, did not respond to calls at the time of filling this report. But Sunday Adewale, a professor and Dean of Students’ Affairs, confirmed the fees have further been slashed.

“Yes, that’s true… It has been reduced,” he said on telephone.

A member of the Governing Council and President of the alumni association, Onilede Solomon, described the new development as positive.

“It is a positive one. I actually facilitated it (the meeting between management and students’ leaders). As the president of Alumni Union and a member of the council, it our heritage. If everyone is tired, we can’t be tired. We have to contribute back to our alma mata.”

One of the student leaders, Fawole Isreal, said although they demanded total reversal, they accepted the new fee regime “in order to make sure justice is done to all parties and to maintain the standard of the school.”

The students union president, Oluwaseyi, appealed to the two state governments to “be more responsive to their responsibilities in the school.”

Striker Jamie Vardy and his Leicester City team mates will travel to Thailand for the funeral of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha after Saturday’s English Premier League match against Cardiff City.

The 60-year-old billionaire died last Saturday with four others when his helicopter crashed next to Leicester’s King Power Stadium.

The funeral, likely to last a week, starts on Saturday in Bangkok.

Former England international Vardy said on Friday that he and the other players had to be there.


“That’s how we are — we are a close-knit group. We are one big family and one of the main reasons for that is Vichai,” he said. “For us to be there is massively important.”

Vichai bought Leicester in 2010 and the team went on to stun the football world by winning the English Premier League title against the odds in 2016.

Vardy said last week had been the hardest of his life but the players, who will travel by road to Cardiff, were keen to play on Saturday.

“We all spoke about wanting to play,” said Vardy. “It’s what Vichai would have wanted and that’s we are going to do.

“We know what we have to do and we need to go out and honour his name and put in a performance which will hopefully get the win.

“It is going to be tough and it will be very emotional, but we’ve all chatted about it. People are saying the result doesn’t matter, but for us lads we want to make it a positive result.”

Leicester City are 12th in the table on 13 points, while promoted Cardiff City are 17th with five points from 10 games.

Cardiff City fans are planning to unveil a giant flag with the Thai emblem at the match.

Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has warned Liverpool to prepare to face Mesut Ozil at a time when the playmaker is in “unstoppable” form, as was evidenced by his performance against Leicester City last week.

According to Koscielny, Ozil’s performance against Leicester is one that will live long in the memory but he wants the playmaker to be focused on his next challenge, dissecting a much-improved Liverpool defence, rather than dwelling on the win over Leicester.
“His display on that night will stay in people’s minds for a very long time,” said the defender. “It is a case of ‘I was there when Ozil had that performance against Leicester’.

Dreaded armed robbers who snatch vehicles in Nigeria and drove them to the neighbouring Benin Republic for sell have been arrested by the Lagos state Police command.

Neymar, may face up to six years in prison over irregularities surrounding his move to Barcelona in 2013.

This statement was made by a Spanish magistrate leading an investigation into allegation of the move.

AFP quoted Judge Jose Maria Vazquez Honrubia as saying, “The term imposed, in principle, could be between four and six years,”

The Judge noted that the decree issued by Neymar, his parents, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell are all awaiting trial over alleged corruption concerning Neymar’s move to the Spanish La Liga giants in 2013.

Recall that the Brazilian international forward is now with Paris Saint-Germain in France’s Ligue 1.


The case was filed by by DIS, a Brazilian group which part-owned the rights to Neymar, alleged “corruption” and “fraud” in the player’s move to Barcelonain May 2013 for a reported fee of 57.1m euros.
