Tesla CEO Elon Musk has offered to buy Twitter, claiming that the social media platform, which he has criticized for failing to uphold free speech principles, needs to be transformed into a private company.
Twitter Inc. said in a regulatory filing on Thursday that Musk, the company's current largest shareholder, has proposed purchasing the remaining shares of Twitter that he does not already own for $54.20 per share, a bid worth more than $43 billion.

Musk called that price his best and final offer, but he didn't elaborate on financing.
The offer is non-binding and is subject to financing and other terms.

“I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy,” Musk said in the filing. “However, since making my investment I now realize the company will neither thrive nor serve this societal imperative in its current form. Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company.”

Twitter stated that it has received Musk's offer and will consider whether accepting it or continuing to operate as a publicly traded company is in the best interests of its shareholders.

Musk's buyout offer is just the most recent development in his relationship with Twitter.

In recent regulatory filings, the billionaire revealed that he began buying shares in almost daily batches on January 31.

Only Vanguard Group's mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) own more Twitter shares.

According to a filing, Twitter quickly gave Musk a seat on its board on the condition that he not own more than 14.9 percent of the company's outstanding stock. However, Musk backed out of the deal.

Musk's 81 million Twitter followers place him among the most popular figures on the platform, competing with pop stars such as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga. However, his prolific tweeting has occasionally landed him in trouble with the SEC and others.

Musk has described himself as a free speech advocate and has stated that he does not believe Twitter is upholding free speech principles, an opinion shared by followers of Donald Trump and a number of other right-wing political figures whose accounts have been suspended for violating Twitter content rules.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has decided not to join Twitter's board of directors, according to Parag Agrawal, the social media company's CEO.

The news comes six days after Agrawal announced Musk's appointment to the board of directors. On April 4, the Tesla CEO purchased a 9.2 percent stake in Twitter, making him the company's largest shareholder.

Musk will be appointed to the board of directors, according to Agrawal, "subject to a background check and formal acceptance." He went on to say that the Tesla CEO was supposed to join the board on April 9, but he declined.

“I believe this is for the best,” the Twitter CEO said in a note to the company that he later shared on the microblogging platform. “We have and will always value input from our shareholders, whether they are on our Board or not. Elon is our biggest shareholder and we will remain open to his input.”

A thirty-year-old welder, Mr Davou Gyang, has been arrested by men of the Plateau State Police Command over the death of one POS operator in the Dadin Kowa area of Jos.

The operator was said to have been killed after she was robbed of cash and other valuables.

Gyang, a father of three was among the seventeen suspects paraded for various offences at the Command’s Headquarters in Jos on Thursday.

Speaking with our correspondent, Gyang said he was deceived by the leader of the five-man gang still at large to take part in the robbery operation

He said, “I was at home when the leader of the gang, who is my friend for many years told me to accompany him somewhere in his car. I did not know he was on a mission to rob a POS operator at Dadin Kowa.

“Throughout the time the operation lasted, I waited for them in the car and when they finished we drove out. At the end of the day, he gave me N20,000 and I used the money to buy foodstuffs to feed my family.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Isaac Akinmoyede who paraded the suspects said that men of the command also arrested a notorious kidnapper, one Ibrahim Ali Kuru and seven members of his gang who had been terrorising residents in different parts of the state.

The Commissioner said that Ali Kuru was arrested alongside members of his gang after they broke into the house of one Danladi in Shendam Council Area of the State and kidnapped him and thereafter demanded a ransom of N2 million in before he was released

Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed by an inferno which occurred at a residential building in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

According to residents of the apartment, the inferno, which was noticed at about 9:30 pm was caused by an electric spark from a room in which the occupant had left his generator on, locked the door and went out.

It was the landlord of the building next to it that was said to have alerted the residents of the inferno.

Subsequently, the door of the room was forced open but before the fire could be put out, it had spread to other rooms and burnt all the property of the occupants.
The victim was also said to have lost a sum of N250,000 to the incident.

Tragedy struck residents of Aboru and Iyana-Ipaja in Alimosho area of Lagos on Saturday as flood swept away an 11-year-old boy and his rescuer, one Wasiu into a canal linking Aburo and Iyana-Ipaja on Ige Road.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who visited the scene of the accident observed huge crowd wearing long faces due to the unfortunate incident that occurred following the overflow of the canal.

It was gathered that two young boys sent by their parents to buy cooking gas at a gas station unknowingly fell into the drain through which water passed into the canal.

“Three young men attempted rescuing the boys and succeeded in rescuing the older one, but one of the rescuers popularly known as Wasiu Stubborn was swept away while trying to rescue the other victim,” eyewitnesses told the NAN.

Speaking to NAN at the scene, Mr Solomon Agboghoroma, a Community Development Association leader in Oki town, regretted the development, blaming the failure of government to construct a bridge in the area for such incidents.

Agboghoroma, who recounted the ordeals of landlords and residents of the area anytime it rained, said that there was the need to expand Aboru road and build a bridge at Cement Bud Stop to forestall recurrence of such tragedy.

“This rain started almost four or five days ago but the one of last night was one of the heaviest and it started at about 2:15 am and by 3:15am, it came with full force and everwhere was flooded.

“At about 7:30 am or 8:00am, we learnt that an OPC member, who was security guard in one of the gas stations here was carried away by flood while trying to rescue two children who came to buy gas, but fell into the drain.

“The gas station had not opened because of the flood as the whole place including the canal had overflowed its banks.

“The children misplaced their legs and the two of them fell inside the gutter. This OPC boy went and rescued one but in the process of rescuing the second child, he and the boy fell into the canal and that was the end,” Agboghoroma said.

He blamed the government for the tragedy, saying that several petitions had been written to successive governments in the state from the time of former Gov. Babatunde Fashola to the last administration of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode.

“People have been dying in situation like this here and all landlords have tried, including raising almost N4 million for dredging of the canal.

“The government knows what to do when it is ready because this canal contract was award sometime in 2011 or 2012. When we taxed ourselves, Fashola came and commended us and promised palliative and government takeover.

” The government should come and do the bridge as against this culvert that is here. This flat culvert cannot contain water. The government should widening this road and ensure the canal is dug for the peace and safety of residents,” he added.

Mr Suleiman Adedokun, an eye witness and a shop owner beside the canal, told NAN that the rescuer, named “Wasiu Stubborn “, entered the drain to rescue the boy but the flood swept both of them away into the canal.

“Wasiu tried, succeeded in catching the second boy but his effort to come out of the drain proved futile as it was not easy for him due to the force of the water.

“It is the bad road and narrow culvert that caused these deaths because these two children that fell inside the drain didn’t know it was there as water covered everywhere,” Adedokun said.

A furniture maker, Mr Gift Wejem, who decried the tragedy, said that flood had severally swept away furniture, materials, machines and generator whenever the canal overflowed its bank.

An officer of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNC), who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said that the agency got the information at about 9:00 am that flood carried away one Mr Wasiu a.k.a, stubborn while trying to rescue two children.

He said that the LSNC had made efforts and called relevant agencies of government, who he said might arrive the scene anytime.

“We are trying to locate the parents of the children and also to contact the family of Wasiu,” the LNSC officer said .

Senator Dino Melaye has joined Nollywood just few hours after the Appeal Court affirmed the decision of the Kogi Election Petition Tribunal nullifying his victory.

[b]How did your journey into comedy start?
[/b]It started when no one was there to help me. I have always wanted to act. However, actualising the dream was very difficult. I remember back then, I used to go to movie locations to beg for roles, but I was always turned down.

I didn’t want my passion to die just like that, and it was in the course of thinking deeply about what to do that the idea of online comedy skits came to me. I tried it out and I realised it was a good one, so I delved into it fully and have been giving it my best since then.

How would you describe the experience of being a social media celebrity?
It has being an awesome experience. The major highlight, for me, is being able to touch and impact on people’s lives with my skits. I get a lot of praises and positive feedback from people, which makes me delighted.

I have got a lot of testimonies from people on account of my skits. There was a time a lady called me and told me she was going for an operation. She was really scared and nervous, and had already given up on life. However, before the operation, she was going through her Instagram page and suddenly, my video popped up and she watched it. She said she laughed so hard and felt relieved. The fear she had before the operation abated and at the end of the day, the surgery was successful.

A girl also once told me that she had wanted to end her life because she was in a bad situation with her boyfriend, until she came across one of my videos online. She then watched others and laughed so hard to the point that she forgot about the situation she was in and what she was planning to do. She eventually sent me a sum of N20,000. There was also a time a fan gave me N100,000— he said my contents always got to him and made him laugh, so he decided to appreciate me. Getting feedbacks like that make me so proud of myself. Also, I feel happy whenever I go out and people recognise me.

However, I believe I am not a celebrity yet. I’m still working hard to get to that point. But, with the little I have attained, the experience has been interesting.

You are known for your distinct facial expressions, and at the end of your skits, you always pull your slippers and run. How did that become a feature in your skits?
My facial expressions are usually determined by the situation at that moment. The expressions balance the skits and make them funnier. In my skits, I mostly happen to be in one situation or the other which would warrant me needing to escape, so I always have to run away at the end. It started from one of my skits where, based on the script, I was a youth leader and I impregnated my pastor’s daughter. During the service she had come to testify and it was discovered that I was responsible for her pregnancy, so I had to run away. The video went viral and I got a lot of praises for the way I ran. I then adopted that style and it has since become a trademark.

[b]How do you get ideas for your skits?
[/b]Most of the ideas are based on reality— things that happen around me and things I watch. I talk about real life situations and make them funny, while at the same time, passing messages for people to learn from.

For example, one of my skits addressed how people react to infidelity in marriage. When a man cheats, it is not considered a sin; rather, he would even be applauded. But, when the woman cheats, she is disgraced and stigmatised. In that skit, I was able to pass the information that everybody’s feelings should be respected. A man shouldn’t be praised for something that is clearly wrong, and vice versa. Because of this skit, a king invited me to his palace and told me that he really appreciated the concept.

Above all, my ideas are a product of God’s grace

What are some of the weird requests and comments you get from fans?
[/b]Some are encouraging, some are funny, and some are annoying. Whichever way they come in, I look for a proper way to respond. If a comment is really annoying, I would rather ignore. One of the annoying comments I’ve got was when someone told me that my skit was rubbish. I had just uploaded a video that day, and I am sure the person didn’t even watch it, because within 27 seconds, he commented, “This is a rubbish video. Oga, go and look for a better job”. I deleted it because that is what I do whenever I get such comments.

On the other hand, I get beautiful and encouraging comments from people too.

[b]How do your fans react when they see you?
There was a day I was strolling and a car passed by. Immediately the person recognised me, he was so happy and he had to come down to take a picture with me. Also, over the weekend at a wedding, a lady wanted to tell me that she was a fan but she was probably scared or shy. Suddenly, someone pulled her to me and said she was my biggest fan. The lady just kept smiling and told me how she liked my work. She also asked to take a picture with me. Even before she completed the statement, I already positioned myself for the picture.

Here in Benin (Edo State), my fans react in really funny ways when they see me. Some of them would hail me and tell me that they are subscribed to my YouTube channel and other social media pages. They would then ask me for the money they allegedly spent on subscription.

Two friends who grew up in the same neighbourhood decades ago reunited by chance in the same neighbourhood and the same building so they decided to recreate a photo they took 27 years ago.



Twitter users Kola Aina and Hameed Abubakar later took to Twitter to write about their chance encounter.



Kola shared an old photo of them taken 27 years ago and a new one they recreated and wrote: "The last few weeks have been nothing short of a miracle. Thankful for life, health & 2nd chances. A key highlight was randomly running into my man @Hameo1 in the same neighborhood where decades ago we spent some time. 27 years later, same building - we got silly."

Hameed reacted to their meeting, writing: "This encounter was the cherry on the cake for what was a fantastic and revealing few weeks on the road. A few “inches”, earlier or later, we would have missed each other. Grateful for life and time."

Nigeria has expressed its readiness to partner Britain in tackling unemployment in the country through job creation.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, stated this when he received the Political Counsellor, British High Commission, Abuja, Dominic Williams in his office in Abuja recently.

"We are ready to collaborate with our partners all over the world to open up avenues for job creation. We are open to all kinds of suggestions and levels of co-operation," he said.

He disclosed that government has opened other sectors as part of efforts to diversify the economy from oil, which would in turn create room for employment.

He also said that part of the efforts of government to diversify the economy and boost job creation included empowering people to go back to the farm through the Anchor Borrowers' Programme, as well as activating the mines and steel sector.

Keyamo noted that government, through the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), has been empowering many youths by training them on basic skills to make them self-employed, as well as employers of labour.

He observed that empowering the youths with the acquisition of skills has also reduced the practice of importing such skills from other countries.

Earlier, the Political Counsellor, British High Commission Abuja, Dominic Williams, sought ways that Britain could assist Nigeria in its efforts at job creation.

A two-year-old boy was burnt to death on Friday night after candlelight gutted a storey building on Ben Okonkwo Street, Ikotun area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that a five-year-old girl also suffered burns but was rescued by emergency officials who put out the fire. The identities of the victims had yet to be identified.

It was gathered that the fire started from a self-contained flat on the top floor of the building.

The deceased’s mother had reportedly gone out to buy some food items, leaving the candle lit while her son and the girl were asleep.

It was learnt that before she returned, the candle had burnt out and engulfed the room.

Our correspondent learnt that it took a combined team of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the state fire service to put out the fire.

“The fire started on Friday night as a result of candlelight while the woman stepped out to buy some food items. A boy of two years old was burnt beyond recognition. A five-year-old girl also suffered burns and she was taken to a hospital, but I can’t readily confirm whether the victims are siblings,” an emergency official told our correspondent.

LASEMA General Manager Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the death of the boy, urged residents to avoid using candles and be safety conscious.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday announced a major reason Nigeria’s borders were shut some weeks ago.

Buhari made the disclosure in his Independence Day broadcast to the nation.
The President said while Nigeria would continue to do business with other countries, illegal movement of crude oil will not be allowed.

He said: “We will also continue our fight against illegal bunkering of crude oil and the smuggling of refined petroleum products across our borders, including the diligent prosecution and conviction of offenders found guilty of these acts.

“Whilst Nigeria remains committed to free and fair continental and international trade, we will not hesitate to take all necessary steps to tackle illegal smuggling, transshipment and other predatory trade practices that destroy jobs in our country.”

At least seven persons were killed in an explosion while travelling along Biu-Buratai-Buni Yadi-Damaturu road.

The explosion was suspected to have been caused by a landmine or an improvised explosive device (IED).
The incident occurred between Kamuya and Buratai (hometown of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai) at 10:30 am on Thursday.

According to the report, the driver took off at Biu motor park in a Golf Volkswagen car and was heading for Maiduguri en route Buratai-Buni Yadi-Damaturu road as a result of constant attacks at Damboa road (a shorter but very risky route for motorists to ply).

"Unfortunately, this Biu-Buni Yadi-Damaturu road is becoming a death trap for passengers. We lost all six passengers and a driver who left Biu to Maiduguri but stepped on a landmine after Buratai village before they entered Yobe State.

"Sadly, IEDs which planted on the bad parts of the road exploded and destroyed the vehicle with all seven occupants blown into pieces.
"We are saddened by this ugly incident. We can't ply Damboa-Maiduguri highway due to Boko Haram attacks. Gradually Biu-Damaturu is getting out of hand," a road worker said.

There was an ambush by terrorists along the road some weeks ago which claimed the life of a soldier.

The latest killing came on the heels of the kidnapping and eventual release of six transportation personnel on the same route.

The Police in Edo State at the weekend arrested a 30-year old man identified as God’stime Ogechi, who specialises in robbing commercial sex workers at Ugbiyoko Community in Egor Council Area of the state.

Parading the suspect at the police command, Edo State Police Commissioner, Danmallam Mohammed, said the suspect is a one-man gang that uses a rod-like gun to rob call girls while pretending to pay them for spending the night with him.

“When he takes them to a dark street, he would bring out the rod and the girls thinking, that it is a gun, would give him their phones and money including the one he paid them.

“But luck ran out of him when one of his victims ran away when they got to a dark street at Ugbiyoko area and when Ogechi went back to collect the money he paid her for the night, some of the girls recognised him, which led to his arrest,” Mohammed explained.

Ogechi, who confessed to the crime, said he has lost count of the number of girls he has robbed saying, “I don’t have any gang. I operate along Ekenwan Road. I pick street girls at night and rob them. I usually chat with them and tell them that I want to take them for daybreak. When we get to a dark corner, I will bring out this thing like a gun and threaten them.

“They will give me their phones. I cannot remember the number of girls I have robbed. I was caught when one of the girls ran away after I have paid her. I went back to the spot where I picked her from and asked for my money. She raised alarm,” Ogechi said
