Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was left purring at the performance of Cesc Fabregas in Monday's win over Burnley, calling him a "maestro". In his Premier League debut for the club, the midfielder had a hand in all three goals in a 3-1 victory and made the kind of impact that reinforced Mourinho's view of what the Spaniard will bring to his team. In pre-season, Mourinho described Fabregas as "the missing piece of our engine", and said he was delighted to attract the sort of "football brain" his side were missing. His new team-mates thought Fabregas "sees football too fast", he added. Cesc Fabregas v Burnley The Spaniard had 106 touches, 18 more than any other player. He also made the most passes (89), with an 87.6% success rate, and two assists. The backing of his new manager will have been music to Fabregas's ears after a difficult summer. His much-anticipated 2011 homecoming to Barcelona, where he had come through the famous La Masia academy before leaving for Arsenal as a 16-year-old, had turned sour. Neither party showed much appetite to continue their relationship, and he became a target for a section of Barca's fans towards the end of a campaign they ended without a major trophy. It looked like a return to Arsenal was on the cards but his former club declined to take up first option on him. Meanwhile, he played just 34 minutes at the World Cup as Spain's defence ended with defeat in their opening two games. Cesc Fabregas factfile Born Spain, May 1987. Joined Arsenal from Barcelona as a 16-year-old in 2003. Scored 57 goals in 303 games for the Gunners, and won the 2005 FA Cup. Joined Barcelona in 2011, scoring 35 goals in 129 appearances. Helped Barcelona win La Liga in 2013 and Copa del Rey in 2012. 13 goals in 89 appearances for Spain, including winning the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship Discarded by Barcelona, rejected by Arsenal and shunned by Spain, Fabregas must have been relieved when Chelsea came to his rescue as they pounced to sign him for a fee believed to be in the region of £30m. Why did it not work out for him at Barcelona? "It certainly didn't go to plan," said BBC Sport's Spanish football writer Andy West. "Although he played 96 league games in three seasons, he never fully established himself as a first-team regular. "When the big games came around, there was always a question mark over whether he'd be picked. "It didn't help his cause that his role changed - he generally had to fit in wherever there was a space rather than claiming a place of his own. Fabregas did not enjoy the same status at Barcelona as the likes of Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta "Sometimes he played centre midfield instead of Xavi, sometimes left midfield instead of Andres Iniesta, sometimes as the 'false nine' instead of Lionel Messi, but he never really 'owned' a position. "In those circumstances it was difficult for him to achieve consistency or continuity. It always felt like he wasn't completely trusted either by his coaches or the fans." Fabregas still managed an impressive 28 goals and 32 assists for the Catalans, although that was not enough to quieten his critics. "He was whistled at, rather than booed. When the team played poorly, he or Alexis Sanchez, who has joined Arsenal, would be the first ones the crowd jumped on," added West. "It didn't help that he left as a teenager and then cost a lot of money to bring back." Barcelona forward Pedro on Fabregas's exit "Everybody knows Cesc is a great player, one of the best in his position in the world. It's a shame for me because obviously as a striker, he is a guy who can provide you with very good passes. As a friend, we've got a very good relationship and I'm going to miss him a lot. Chelsea have built a very good team and with Cesc as well, they're going to be very difficult to beat in the Champions League." The Champions League eluded Fabregas in his time at the Nou Camp but he won the Copa del Rey and Fifa Club World Cup in his first season back and the Spanish league title the next. Why did Arsenal not sign Fabregas? The Gunners' decision not to take up a buy-back option on Fabregas certainly does not appear to be because manager Arsene Wenger thinks the player he signed back in September 2003 is below the standard required. "When Fabregas first came to Arsenal I remember Wenger pulling me over to come and watch this young kid because of the simplicity in his game, which was quite unique really," recalled former Arsenal defender Martin Keown. Fabregas is Arsenal's youngest ever first-team player and goalscorer "He could see a pass, while his vision and technique was all top drawer from a really young age. I had rarely seen Wenger so excited about a player. "I'm surprised it did not work out better for him at Barcelona because I expected him to be there for 10 years." Fabregas became Arsenal's youngest ever first-team player when he made his debut aged 16 years and 177 days in a League Cup game against Rotherham in October 2003. However, in 305 appearances for the Gunners over eight seasons he won a solitary FA Cup. "All the players of that time were a victim of the manager being quite stringent with getting the economics right at the club," continued Keown. "Now, of course, they can spend big money but they couldn't then and Arsenal were losing players every season." "Wenger didn't take up the option to sign him because he has an abundance of talent already in those areas," added Keown. "I feel now that Ramsey is the new Fabregas and you are going to block the career of other players if you sign him. It is somebody else's turn now and Fabregas would have understood that." Is Arsenal and Barcelona's loss Chelsea's gain? Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique felt his close friend and international team- mate was under-appreciated at the Nou Camp. "I really like Cesc and I know he is going through a tough time because the club don't appreciate him as much as they should," he said before Fabregas joined Chelsea. "He is one of those players who would be first choice at any other club in the world, the star of the team." If Fabregas felt unwanted and unloved at Barcelona, that is not the case under Mourinho. The Portuguese saw the player at close quarters from the opposition dugout in his first stint at Chelsea and more recently at Real Madrid, and called him the "future" of the west London club. Fabregas set up Andre Schurrle's goal against Burnley with a sublime defence- splitting pass "It may well be that he was not good enough for Barca and their specific style at the time, but Jose Mourinho sees beyond that," said ex-Chelsea winger Pat Nevin. "I don't know how it is going to work out but he has got a massive advantage in that he has played in the English league before. "He is also joining a team that looks incredibly strong, not only in skill, but also in physicality. "The latter quality will develop a lot of space in the areas Fabregas wants and, with good space, he will certainly create." Fabregas did just that against Burnley and, although tougher tests await, his promising start suggests he will be a key component in Chelsea's pursuit of honours. "I think Mourinho likes players who have a point to prove," added Keown. "It is intriguing to see whether Cesc can pull it off. "Mourinho is a manager with whom you get the impression there is no time to lose - it is now or never. That focus may just take him to a new level."

"We have a talented team and so far, so good. Everyone has treated me well. They've made it easy for me to slot into the team. Playing for Chelsea was something I probably never expected but football is unexpected and it brought me here. I will give my best. I'm very happy at the moment." - Cesc Fabregas. |
"Well Fabregas has slotted straight back into the Premier League. He's taken the big moments in the match. He's set the tone for the season, as has Costa, in showing they're going to win Chelsea these type of games. They struggled in games like this last year. Fabregas is a class football player who can play killer passes." - Gary Neville. |
Conceding the first goal early on in Lancashire proved but a blip on the way to beating Burnley and beginning the season with a win, goals from debutant Diego Costa, World Cup- winner Andre Schurrle and long- serving Branislav Ivanovic quickly steadying the ship and putting the Blues 3-1 up by the interval. The first was an opportunistic strike from our new centre-forward with the second goal from Schurrle one to truly catch the eye. Ivanovic converted a corner. Burnley came back into the match in the second half and Thibuat Courtois was called on to make a good save, but Chelsea closed the game out confidently to see off the newly promoted side and claim our first three points. |

jazzydee: ince her creation in 1987, it is trite to say that Akwa Ibom State has not benefited from any significant economic boom through national or international sporting activities hosted by the Nigerian Government. The apparent limitation has been a gross lack of facilities in hosting such sporting activities. The major sporting edifice in the state, the Uyo township stadium before Governor Godswill Akpabio did not even have a sitting facility or have an internationally acceptable grassing to host football events. The only activity which the township stadium was known for hosting was the Mobil track and field games. But with the advent of the Akpabio administration, the stadium experienced a face lift, the terraces were fixed and the state box was upgraded to an appreciable standard. The quality of the field and the dressing rooms has improved, likewise the track and field facilities.I want ,to believe he as read this!! |

There are conflicting reports over the fate of 17 Ebola patients who vanished after a quarantine centre in the Liberian capital Monrovia was looted. An angry mob attacked the centre in the city's densely populated West Point township on Saturday evening. A senior health official said all of the patients were being moved to another medical facility. But a reporter told the BBC that 17 had escaped while 10 others were taken away by their families. More than 400 people are known to have died from the virus in Liberia, out of a total of 1,145 deaths recorded by the World Health Organization. Assistant Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah said protesters had been unhappy that patients were being brought in from other parts of the capital. Other reports suggested the protesters had believed Ebola was a hoax and wanted to force the quarantine centre to close. The attack at the Monrovia centre is seen as a major setback in the struggle to halt the outbreak, says the BBC's Will Ross, reporting from Lagos. Health experts say that the key to ending the Ebola outbreak is to stop it spreading in Liberia, where ignorance about the virus is high and many people are reluctant to cooperate with medical staff. 'All gone' Mr Nyenswah said after the attack that 29 patients at the centre were being relocated and readmitted to an Ebola treatment centre located in the facility of the country's John F Kennedy Memorial Medical Center. However, Jina Moore, a journalist for Buzzfeed who is in Monrovia, told the BBC that 10 people had been freed by their relatives on Friday night and 17 had escaped during the looting the next day. Rebecca Wesseh, who witnessed the attack, told the AFP news agency: "They broke down the door and looted the place. The patients have all gone." The crowd were reportedly angry that an Ebola isolation centre had been set up in their neighbourhood The attackers, mostly young men armed with clubs, shouted insults about President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and yelled "there's no Ebola", she said, adding that nurses had also fled the centre. The head of the Health Workers Association of Liberia, George Williams, said the unit had housed 29 patients who "had all tested positive for Ebola" and were receiving preliminary treatment. Confirming that 17 had escaped, he said that only three had been taken by their relatives, the other nine having died four days earlier. Fallah Boima's son was admitted to the ward four days ago, and seemed to be doing well, but when the distraught father arrived for his daily visit on Sunday his son was nowhere to be seen, AFP adds. "I don't know where he is and I am very confused," he said. "He has not called me since he left the camp. Now that the nurses have all left, how will I know where my son is?" http://m.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28827091 |

A quarantine centre for suspected Ebola patients in the Liberian capital Monrovia has been attacked and looted by protesters, police say. The incident happened in the densely populated West Point township on Saturday evening. At least 20 patients who were being monitored for signs of the illness have left the centre. Officials said blood-stained bedding looted from the centre posed a serious infection risk. The protesters were unhappy that patients were being brought in from other parts of the capital, the assistant health minister said. Other reports suggested the protesters believed Ebola was a hoax and wanted to force the quarantine centre to close. The centre was set up to observe suspected Ebola patients and then transfer them to a main treatment centre if they prove positive, assistant health minister Tolbert Nyenswah told the BBC. It is not known if those at the centre were infected with the virus, though one report suggested they had proved positive. 'Stupidest thing' A senior police officer said blood-stained mattresses, beddings and medical equipment were taken from the centre. "This is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen in my life", he said. The crowd were reportedly angry that an Ebola isolation centre had been set up in their neighbourhood He said the looting spree could threaten to spread the virus to the whole of the West Point area. Described as a slum, there are an estimated 50,000 people in the West Point neighbourhood. The Ebola epidemic began in Guinea in February and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. On Friday, the death toll rose to 1,145 after the WHO said 76 new deaths had been reported in the two days to 13 August. There have been 2,127 cases reported in total. Symptoms include high fever, bleeding and central nervous system damage Fatality rate can reach 90% - but the current outbreak is about 55% Incubation period is two to 21 days There is no vaccine or cure Supportive care such as rehydrating patients who have diarrhoea and vomiting can help recovery Fruit bats are considered to be virus' natural host http://m.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28827091 |

Have you heard the one about the Dutchman, the Frenchman, the Portuguese, the Chilean and the Northern Irishman? Well, pay attention because this little story is actually no laughing matter. Of all the subplots surrounding Saturday’s launch of the new Barclays Premier League season, the one that is perhaps the most compelling – to me at least -- concerns a truly heavyweight clash of the coaches. Between them, the men who manage or coach the five most likely title contenders can boast a healthy 22 domestic titles which were earned in leagues ranging from England to Ecuador. Only one has never won a league before, and he came desperately close last season. Perhaps even more than any superstar player signing, the recruitment of manager Louis van Gaal by Manchester United has captured Premier League fans’ imaginations. Fresh from his strong showing with Holland at the Fifa World Cup, the super- confident 63-year-old has already convinced some pundits and fans that he can drag the Red Devils from last season’s seventh-place fiasco to title glory this term. Van Gaal has won seven domestic league titles, four of them in his native Netherlands, two in Spain and one in Germany and he seems determined to add England to that list, sooner rather than later. Despite his late arrival from Brazil, he has already overseen a successful pre- season, remodeled United’s Carrington training facility and is presumably about to mastermind a late-August transfer market flurry of signings. The Van Gaal management model is a blend of meticulous preparation, maverick media manipulation and unshakeable self- belief. Sound familiar? Well it should because it rubbed off on another serial title winner, Van Gaal’s former protégé at Barcelona, Jose Mourinho. The two men won’t come face to face in league action until October 26 at Old Trafford, but it will be fascinating to see how both react between now and then when asked the inevitable questions about one another. For his part, Mourinho is unlikely to antagonise Van Gaal in the way he does with Arsene Wenger or Manuel Pellegrini, nor will he be able to adopt the faintly patronising terms he uses when discussing Brendan Rodgers. Instead, he will most likely point out that United’s absence from European competition gives them an advantage. Chelsea have been bolstered by some healthy summer signings and look likely to be the team to beat if Van Gaal is to get his United reign off to a winning start. Again, though, we are not just talking a two-man tussle this season. One simply cannot overlook Manuel Pellegrini and one cannot overstate the significance of his landing the Premier League title at the first attempt, even if City’s considerable riches –financially and personnel-wise – helped massively. The Chilean has now won titles in Ecuador, Argentina and England and his calmness amidst the maelstrom of a Premier League title battle may once more turn out to be his greatest asset, particularly given the distinctly different personalities of rivals Van Gaal and Mourinho. All three should be wary though of the wily Frenchman waiting in the wings. Seemingly galvanised by Arsenal’s long- overdue addition to its trophy cabinet, Arsene Wenger has been talking about the club having turned a corner. He now has even more pace at his disposal in the shape of Alexis Sanchez and his club can boast three 2014 World Cup winners. There can be no doubt Arsenal have the players to win the league but can Wenger keep his key men fit at crucial times? Can he find a way to avoid the now- traditional winter collapse and – most crucial of all – can he himself keep his composure in the face of the provocation and mind-games that will most assuredly be part of this season’s clash of the managerial titans? Last but certainly not least, the man with no silverware to his name, yet arguably one of the brightest young coaches in world football. Brendan Rodgers has had a long summer break to come to terms with last season’s near miss, and also to plan for life after Luis Suarez. He appears to have spent that thinking time wisely. With money to spend, he has done just that with the likes of Emre Can, Lazar Markovic and Dejan Lovren already looking like smart buys. While he demonstrated a surprising willingness to tinker with his tactics last season, Rodgers has a clear-cut idea of how he wants Liverpool to play and we can expect greater consistency this season in terms of tactical shape, even if we will see slightly more squad rotation. The likes of Coutinho, Sterling and Sturridge are improving all the time and it is only the fact that Rodgers must juggle domestic and European demands that leaves pundits reluctant to put the Reds among the title favourites. Elsewhere, among the ranks of the “gaffers” this season, one can expect Roberto Martinez to continue his superb work at Everton and it will be fascinating to see how Mauricio Pochettino handles the challenge at White Hart Lane. After a tortuous campaign last time out, both of his own making and thanks to some less-than-committed players, this should be a happier season for Newcastle United’s Alan Pardew. Can Gus Poyet, Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes build on ultimately positive campaigns for Sunderland, Hull and Stoke last time out? How will Ronald Koeman fare in his first season of Premier League football? Again, it’s a managerial subplot to savour. There will be strugglers and we know there will be managerial casualties sooner rather than later (in fact, Tony Pulis became one even as I wrote this) but it is great to start a season accentuating the positives rather than the negatives when it comes to the men in the dugouts. Just for now, let’s forget the “sack race” and look forward to the real race, the race for the title. |

Romelu Lukaku has today (Wednesday) joined Everton on a permanent transfer. The 21-year-old departs Stamford Bridge following a three-year spell at the club and moves to Goodison Park, where he spent last season on loan. Lukaku joined the Blues in August 2011 from Anderlecht, making his debut as a substitute in a 3-1 home win over Norwich City. In August 2012 he joined West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan at the end of which he was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, as well as being voted the club’s Player of the Year. Lukaku began the 2013/14 season at Chelsea and made three substitute appearances, including one in the UEFA Super Cup match against Bayern Munich. Shortly after, a deal was agreed for Lukaku to move to Everton on loan for the remainder of the campaign. The forward was part of the Belgium World Cup squad as they reached the quarter-finals of the competition. Lukaku ends his time at Stamford Bridge having made 15 appearances for the club. We thank him for his service and wish him the best of luck for the future. Romelu Lukaku has today (Wednesday) joined Everton on a permanent transfer.
