AutosCheck Out Five Most Expensive Cars In The World by marketresearch(op): 9:59am On Jun 02, 2016
After saving for a whole year or more to buy a car, it is finally delivered and you take it for a ride on Lagos Island when the traffic is still light or along Abuja highway. While enjoying your new car, out of no way a car speeds by and it catches your attention. In the twinkle of an eye, you lose confidence in your new car and you long for the beast that you just saw. Does this sound familiar?

Manufacturers of cars will continue to make new, better and more expensive ones and you can only enjoy the one you have – or can afford. But I still want you to know what you are missing which is why I’ve put together a list of the current five most expensive cars in the world.

How long will it take you to raise funds to buy the cheapest one? Think about that while fantasizing about riding these state-of-the-art cars

$4.8 million – Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita
https://i0.wp.com/1hosj01irnixn8onr1zmv5s1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/trevita-01-1024x521.jpg?resize=1024%2C521
This car is described by the manufacturer as ‘a diamond on wheels’ and this is because when sunlight hits the Trevita, it sparkles as if millions of tiny white diamonds are infused inside the visible carbon fiber bodywork.

The Trevita features a unique double carbon rear wing, inconell exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes with ABS, airbags, paddle-shift, chrono instrument cluster, infotainment system, tire monitoring system and a hydraulic lifting system.

The Trevita was originally intended to be a limited edition of three examples. The white carbon fibre used for the Trevita made the car extremely difficult and time consuming to manufacture, however, and a decision was taken to make the car even more exclusive and limit the number of Trevitas made to just two.

$4.5 million – Lamborghini Veneno
https://i2.wp.com/pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/201303/2013-lamborghini-veneno-12_1600x0w.jpg?resize=1140%2C641
Poison is the name Lamborghini chose for the modified Aventador — translated from Italian of course — built to celebrate the automaker’s 50th birthday. The name is fitting for a vehicle that looks so positively deadly, so undeniably venomous.

The car is absolutely stunning from every angle, and to this day, we’re not convinced it isn’t an alien spacecraft surveying our planet for eventual takeover. It just doesn’t seem real. The only thing more remarkable than the look is the price — a whopping $4.5 million.

The Veneno is fast, and that should come as no surprise. Its 6.5-liter V12 spins all the way up to 8,400 rpm to deliver 740 hp and 507 lb-ft, surging the car to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds.

$3.4 million – W Motors Lykan Hypersport
https://i2.wp.com/icdn8.digitaltrends.com/image/3-4-million-w-motors-lykan-hypersport_009.jpg?resize=1092%2C728
If you have seen Furious 7, you would have seen the Lykan Hypersport. It was the supercar that crashed through not one, not two, but three skyscrapers in Dubai.

The styling of the car includes jewel-encrusted headlights, scissor doors, and an interior ripped straight from science fiction. It looks like a pissed off armored car from the future, and its performance is right on par with its image. The Hypersport boasts a 3.7-liter, twin-turbo flat-six that yields 770 hp and 708 lb-ft.

$3.4 million – Limited Edition Bugatti Veyron by Mansory Vivere
https://i0.wp.com/icdn2.digitaltrends.com/image/3-4-million-limited-edition-bugatti-veyron-by-mansory-vivere_009-720x480-c.jpg?resize=720%2C480
This is not just one of the most expensive cars in the world, it is also one of the fastest. Augmented by German witch doctors Mansory, the 1,200-hp Veyron starts out as a Grand Sport Vitesse Roadster, only to be adorned with a gorgeous carbon fiber body, a new spoiler package, upgraded LED lights, a rebuffed cabin, and a redesigned front grill. Further classifying the Veyron as a work of art, maps of historic race events like the Targa Florio are laser etched into the exterior and interior. Oh, and it can do 254 mph – according to Digital Trends.

$2.6 million – Pagani Huayra BC
https://i1.wp.com/icdn2.digitaltrends.com/image/2-6-million-pagani-huayra-bc_pac0943_go_aperta-720x480-c.jpg?resize=720%2C480
Right off the bat, you can tell the BC is playing a different game from the standard Huayra. It’s fitted with an enormous active rear spoiler that generates 1,102 lbs of downforce at 155 mph, as well as a wider rear track, new side skirts, and a bevy of sexy aero goodies. Despite the additions, the BC is a true featherweight, tipping the scales at a paltry 2,654 lbs thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. The whole deal will cost you a cool $2.6 million (or it would have, if all 20 units hadn’t been sold already), but you clearly get a lot for your money. With 789 turbocharged ponies on tap, the BC may actually live up to its godly name.

A super high-end Android smartphone called Solarin was officially launched at an event in London today by Stealth Israeli startup Sirin Labs. Kazakh entrepreneur Kenges Rakishev, Israeli venture capitalist Moshe Hogeg (the same guy behind Yo and Mobli), and former McKinsey consultant Tal Cohen founded Sirin Labs in 2013. The trio’s aim was to build a high-tech device that combined “the highest privacy settings, operated faster than any other phone and built with the best materials from around the world. A $25 million seed fund was raised by the company a couple of years back with about $72 million raised last month.

This achievement came to life with the help of partnership with KoolSpan who helped to integrate chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption, similar to what the military uses to protect communications. This encryption is activated via a physical security switch on the back of the phone. Solarin also sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, comes with support for 24 bands of LTE, and promises “far superior” Wi-Fi connectivity than standard mobile phones. It also has a 23.8-megapixel rear camera and a 5.5” IPS LED 2K resolution screen.

According to Fredrik Öijer, VP of product at Sirin Labs, “Every single design decision and material choice was based on performance and functionality,”

Sales will be online via Sirin Labs’ first retail store in Mayfair (34 Bruton Place), London from June 1; and at Harrods, Knightsbridge from June 30.

PoliticsCan This Happen In Nigeria:its Illegal To Mail Workers After Work Hours In Franc by marketresearch(op): 4:48pm On May 31, 2016
These French guys have all the fun. This is a country where employees have 30 days off a year, 16 weeks of full-paid family leave and even a 35 hour work week.

Now a new law is now being stipulated in the country. It says “No More Emails After Work Hours.” You have the “right to disconnect”.

According to the new law, in a company where the staff strength is 50 or more, you cannot send an email to an employee after typical work hours.

“All the studies show there is far more work-related stress today than there used to be, and that the stress is constant,” Benoit Hamon of the French National Assembly told the BBC. “Employees physically leave the office, but they do not leave their work. They remain attached by a kind of electronic leash— like a dog. The texts, the messages, the emails — they colonize the life of the individual to the point where he or she eventually breaks down.”

A poll by software company Adobe last year found that email is an addiction for American workers: 87 percent of people check work email outside of work, and 50 percent check it on vacation (despite studies that have consistently found that phone addiction triggers stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep).

The new law stipulates that companies negotiate policies that limit the spillover of work into their employees’ private lives. Although there are no penalties for companies that violate the amendment, companies are to establish “charters of good conduct” that specify the times which employees are free from being digitally connected to their workplaces. This right to disconnect amendment was passed as part of a controversial French labor law that some say will weaken unions and enhance employee job insecurity. The digital disconnect amendment was the one part of the law that’s been viewed favourably by the French public.

BusinessInterswitch Launches Hospital Management Solution To Manage Non-core Functions by marketresearch(op): 9:17am On May 26, 2016
Interswitch Transnational, Africa’s leading digital payments and commerce provider is set to spark off transformation of Nigeria’s health sector with the launch of Interswitch Hospital Management Solutions (IHMS), a shared outsourcing infrastructure to help manage non-core functions such as patient record keeping, Claims Management and other administrative services.

The solution enables Care Providers to focus on their most essential services without being burdened by time-consuming data management tasks, giving them the ability to pay added attention to keeping their patients healthy. It changes the way Clinicians, Doctors and other medical professionals manage patient information from registration to payment. Other services offered as part of the solution include Claims Processing, Integrated Payments and Reporting, Claims Dispute Arbitration and Settlement, Biometric Patient Identification at hospitals, Capitation Payments Tracking, seamless Patient Eligibility Management and secure patient data hosting and mining with global standards.

Speaking about the benefits offered by IHMS, DCEO Industry Vertical Markets, Interswitch, Chinyere Don-Okhuofu commented,

“Healthcare in Nigeria is plagued by severe challenges from lack of adequate technology infrastructure and high operational costs to manual submission and processing of health claims. As it currently stands, Healthcare Providers and Insurers simply do not have the capacity to manage all of these non-core functions, while still giving their patients the proper care they need.

Interswitch Health Management Solution has been developed to address this issue. Patient processing in health facilities is well integrated from front desk to nursing, doctors to diagnostics, inventory to billing, allowing medical entrepreneurs track cost and revenue in real-time.

Patients will enjoy seamless access to quality healthcare and the multiple functionality of their cards, which include care, payments and savings.

With IHMS, Regulators also have access to quality information for policy making, reduced industry fraud rates, effective government interventions and centralized electronic medical records”.

Health Providers registered on the platform will have their patient records transferred and hosted on a secure server, which allows the flexibility of using World Health Organization’s ICD 9 or 10 coding. Patients visiting the hospital for treatment may opt to be issued a Chip and PIN-based card used for identification, storing medical history and payments for medical services. The solution makes it possible to submit claims or bills to the HMO and track payment easily after service has been delivered.

Chinyere went further to explain the benefit to Health Insurers saying;

“The several benefits of IHMS to Health Insurers include reduced fraudulent claims, efficient revenue collection & expense management, improved patient satisfaction, streamlined and standardized operations, improved resource planning & allocation and market share growth due to outsourcing of non-core operations. Hospitals also enjoy quick Claims submission process and timely Claims settlement.”

It can be recalled that recently, Interswitch launched Card Transaction Control, which allows Nigerians to take control of their transaction security. IHMS is another step by the brand that further reinstates its position as a market leader with the interest of Nigerians at heart.

BusinessStandard Bank Hit By R300 Million ATM Scam In Japan by marketresearch(op): 9:10am On May 26, 2016
South African Standard Bank has been hit by an international Credit Card fraud of 300 million Rand.

The bank said the crime “involved the withdrawal of cash using a small number of fictitious cards at various ATMs in Japan”. The bank reported no financial losses for customers.

According to a Japanese News website, about ¥1.44 billion ($300 million) was illegally withdrawn with forged credit cards from 1,400 automated teller machines in convenience stores around the country

Police suspect that a group of more than 100 people extracted the money from the ATMs, which were located in Tokyo and 16 prefectures, over a period of about 2½ hours on May 15. May 15 was a Sunday and all the money was withdrawn over a period from a little past 5 a.m. to shortly before 8 a.m.

Each transaction involved the removal of ¥100,000, the maximum withdrawal limit set for ATMs, and there were more than 14,000 transactions in the case.

The Police is still investigating the matter.

Foreign AffairsUber Launches $100 Million Vehicle Access Initiative In Kenya by marketresearch(op): 11:42am On May 25, 2016
Uber and Sidian Bank announced today that they have partnered to launch an innovative Uber Vehicle Solutions Programme that will give driver-partners and business investors convenient and affordable access to the quality vehicles they need to start or grow their Uber-based businesses. This comes shortly after Uber celebrated 1 million rides taken in Kenya since its launch just 15 months ago.

The ground breaking vehicle access initiative includes a vehicle finance component delivered through Sidian Bank and a vehicle leasing solution made available through Zohari Leasing. The initiative is valued at a total of approximately Ksh 10 billion (USD 100 million).

According to Nate Anderson, Acting General Manager for Uber in Kenya, the Vehicle Solutions Programme follows similar offerings that have recently been launched by Uber in partnership with WesBank, with great success in South Africa as well as in a number of international locations where Uber has a presence.
“By enabling qualifying driver-partners and investors to afford reliable, high-quality vehicles, Uber is not only helping them to establish and grow their businesses,” Anderson points out, “we are also building an even more sustainable ride-sharing network in Kenya which moves us forward towards achieving our vision of being a first-choice transport solution for everyone in the country.”

Anderson explains that, the key to the Vehicle Solutions Programme’s ability to realise this vision is its highly inclusive design that makes it a viable and accessible proposition for the widest possible cross section of existing and prospective Uber driver-partners.

Speaking in Nairobi, Sidian Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Titus Karanja noted that this partnership is well aligned to the lender’s mandate to support enterprises to thrive.

“We are glad to be part of this deal, which is enabling enterprises to grow. In addition to financing, we will also provide technical assistance to the beneficiaries of this arrangement. This deal is part of our efforts to consolidate our new positioning that is focused on enabling individuals to own their tomorrow,” he added.

The vehicle finance component of the programme offers qualifying driver-partners and investors up to 100% finance deals on vehicles priced between Ksh 1 million and Ksh 1.5 million, with a generous 36-month repayment period at a low 10,5% interest rate.

“To make this unique opportunity as widely available as possible, the qualifying criteria for both the finance and leasing options are focused more on the applicant’s proven Uber experience than on his or her credit history,” Karanja explains, “and the primary qualifying requirement is more than 500 trips and an Uber rating of higher than 4.6. We expect speedy uptake of this financing package, with the entrenchment of Uber’s services in Kenya”

And even drivers with no experience or track record on the Uber platform have the opportunity to benefit from the Vehicle Solutions Programme because, provided their credit record is in good standing, they can apply for classic financing from Sidian Bank for up to 90% of the purchase price of vehicles that are of sufficient quality and reliability to give them entry into the Uber driver-partner network.

Anderson also points to the launch of the UberFinder platform in Kenya as a way to help those drivers and fleet partners not operating on the platform gain access to vehicles that they can use to build up their Uber track record in order to eventually qualify for the Sidian finance or leasing solutions.

“Through the UberFinder system, fleet partners are able to rent their vehicles to drivers on the platform rather than employ full-time drivers,” he explains, “while drivers have a unique opportunity to rent the vehicle they need to gain the required Uber experience needed to eventually qualify to finance their own.”

“The Vehicle Solutions Programme is an excellent example of the power of collaboration and partnership across industries as a means of driving economic opportunity in Kenya,” Anderson concludes, “and it is another way in which Uber and Sidian are demonstrating their commitment to being proactive in developing business people and consumers in the country by making accessible and affordable transport a reality for all.”

PhonesXiaomi To Launch Its First Drone On The 25th Of May by marketresearch(op): 11:26am On May 25, 2016
Chinese Mobile phone manufacturer is expected to launch its first drone tomorrow, the 25th of May 2016.

According to Bloomberg, the drone, made by FIMI Technology, will record high-resolution 4K video and cost about 4,000 yuan ($610). That compares with $799 for the Phantom 3 4K device on DJI’s website.

It is expected that Xiaomi will undercut the competition by offering customers an awesome product at a cheaper price; same strategy it used in China’s smartphone market.

“While making good-quality products, the price point has to be competitive as well,” Li Zhuoqi, a marketing director for Xiaomi, said without disclosing a price or sales estimates. “We have set a very thin margin for drones but the product line is set to be profitable.”

Xiaomi hopes it can capture a part of the consumer drone market that Grand View Research expects will reach reach $4.19 billion by 2024.

BusinessOpeyemi Awoyemi, Olufunbi Falayi Set Up N200m Fastforward Student Innovation Fun by marketresearch(op): 9:41am On May 24, 2016
Jobberman’s Opeyemi Awoyemi and Olufunbi Falayi have set up a Student innovation Fund to to support innovation and the innovators in schools.

The fund, known as, FastForward Student Innovation Fund will be be investing between N250,000 and N2,000,000 for up to 25% in innovations started by current students and recently graduated students (up to 3 years).

Opeyemi, in his blog post, stipulated the fund was for innovation, not just startups nor business ideas.

The money being invested is raised from alumni of specific universities, high networth individuals, private equity companies and supported by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The fund administrator is Investment One.

Opeyemi outlined what Fast Forward is interested in:

Innovation of all kinds. We are investing in tech-enabled innovations, not just software, apps or internet startups. Agriculture, healthcare, environmental innovations can create even more impact than software innovations.
Nigeria’s own Elon Musk. We are looking for visionaries and risktakers who value the global impact their project creates than the money. We are looking out for disruptive groundbreaking tech ideas that improves dramatically on current technologies / processes. They don’t necessarily have to make business sense in 2016.
Job Creation. Sustainable ideas that empower others to make money. Uber of things. Tech-enabled solutions that enables self-reliance. Opportunities that will create hundreds of jobs.
Innovations tackling big problems. As a Nigerian, living in Nigeria these issues are very obvious. Power for homes, offices and small business, clean water, improved agriculture systems, quality education, financial inclusion, affordable housing, open governance are some of those needs.
Foreign Exchange Earners. One of the biggest problems of Nigeria’s economy is that we are more consumers than producers. Another equally big problem is that we have lots of local businesses and a handful of global businesses that bring money back into the country. Interested in supporting global ideas where a company can make millions of dollars outside Nigeria for a Nigerian company.
Sector Revivals and New Sector Creations. There are too many untapped sectors and industries in Nigeria today — dead or non-existent. We are looking for ideas that addresses these issues. See how many makeup artists, personal shoppers and bakers we have in Nigeria now compared to 6 years ago.
Smart and Visionary Founders. Being a student, your world view may be somewhat limited. However if that did not discourage us from wanting to invest in students, that should not discourage you from following your dream and adapting/improving along the way. Real Smart people might look arrogant, but they learn fast and improve on advice of experienced people.

So if you are a student building something really innovative and tech-enabled in consumer tech , health, power, clean water, education et al, apply now at http://fastforward.com.ng.

PhonesCheck Out The Largest Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Billboard In History by marketresearch(op): 9:30am On May 24, 2016
Samsung has done it again with its extraordinary and stunning ads with the largest Samsung Galaxy S7 edge billboard on earth. You might be wondering how large. It is large enough for millions of people to take a glance from faraway( as far as 2.2 kilometers ; almost 1.4 miles away). It is arguably at present one of the largest billboards in the history of consumer electronic ads. It is located in Sokol, Moscow sited on a 262-foot tall building as a backdrop for the world’s largest Galaxy S7 Edge in an area that is sufficiently arid of other skyscrapers. For the positioning, It is in the middle of the road connecting the center of Moscow to the Sheremetyevo International Airport, which means that almost one million people (about 800k) will lay their eyes on it every single day. Kudos to the advertising team of the electronic giant for bringing up such a wonderful idea.

The billboard is powered by a myriad of LED panels, the board cycles through all of the phone’s key features, from its IP68 rating to wireless charging, to its crazy-fast camera and the microSD expansion. One fascinating thing about it is that the curved screen was not left out and looks so much like the handheld. If you are around the Sheremetyevo Airport, you could check it out. Watch below a short video of what it looks like. Its definitely worth watching live with your popcorn and drink. Enjoy.

PhonesCheck Out Google's Latest Phone That Allows You Change Its Parts by marketresearch(op): 8:49am On May 23, 2016
PRODUCTSSMARTPHONES
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT GOOGLE’S PROJECT ARA?

Google Project Ara
Google has come up with a concept of a modular phone, named Ara, where a smartphone is seen as a compilation of modular blocks. This means that the camera, speaker, battery are parts that can be bought and changed if the need arises.

So instead of buying a new device every couple of months to get the latest updates and specs, you just buy the part required and simply tack it onto your phone, replacing the older modules.

Cool. Isn’t it?

Project Ara is Google’s vision for the future of smartphones.

The Ara frame contains all the functionality of a smartphone plus six flexible slots for easy swapping. The modules fit neatly into the frame, allowing for upgrades, innovation and style.

Slide any Ara module into any slot and it just works. Powering this simplicity is Greybus, a new bit of software deep in the Android stack. Greybus supports instantaneous connections, power efficiency and data-transfer rates of up to 11.9 Gbps.

One other cool thing is that you can use an app to eject a module.

PhonesNokia Wants To Start Making Phones Again by marketresearch(op): 7:37am On May 20, 2016
Nokia has announced that it is returning the Nokia brand to the mobile phone and tablet markets. However it will do this through HMD, a newly founded company based in Finland. Nokia has entered a strategic agreement covering branding rights and intellectual property licensing with HMD which will enable the company create Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets for the next ten years.

Under the agreement, Nokia Technologies will receive royalty payments from HMD for sales of Nokia-branded mobile products, covering both brand and intellectual property rights.

HMD has been founded to provide a focused, independent home for a full range of Nokia-branded feature phones, smartphones and tablets. To complete its portfolio of Nokia branding rights, HMD announced yesterday that it has conditionally agreed to acquire from Microsoft the rights to use the Nokia brand on feature phones, and certain related design rights. The Microsoft transaction is expected to close in H2 2016. Together these agreements would make HMD the sole global licensee for all types of Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets. HMD intends to invest over USD 500 million over the next three years to support the global marketing of Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets, funded via its investors and profits from the acquired feature phone business.

HMD’s new smartphone and tablet portfolio will be based on Android.

Nokia will provide HMD with branding rights and cellular standard essential patent licenses in return for royalty payments, but will not be making a financial investment or holding equity in HMD. Nokia Technologies will take a seat on the Board of Directors of HMD and set mandatory brand requirements and performance related provisions to ensure that all Nokia-branded products exemplify consumer expectations of Nokia devices, including quality, design and consumer focused innovation.

HMD would be led, once the Microsoft transaction closes, by Arto Nummela as CEO, who previously held senior positions at Nokia and is currently the head of Microsoft’s Mobile Devices business for Greater Asia, Middle East and Africa, as well as Microsoft’s global Feature Phones business.

TV/MoviesMTN Knocks Out Glo, Etisalat, And Airtel In New MTN Pulse Advert Ft Falz by marketresearch(op): 9:02am On May 19, 2016
https://i1.wp.com/innovation-village.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Screen-Shot-2016-05-17-at-17.58.09.png?resize=1140%2C641

Opening like a Hollywood movie, the new MTN Pulse advert starred popular singer and comedian, Falzthebadhguy, who is a delectable technology security expert contracted by other Nigerian telcos to stop the return of MTN Pulse at all cost.

Since he was unable to achieve this aim, he invited the telcos to brief them about the dashing speed at which young Nigerians are embracing the tariff plan. These telcos were clearly depicted or represented by their corporate colours- a red tie for Airtel, a light green undershirt for etisalat, and a Green tie for Glo.

Unfortunately for these telcos, MTN pulse is unstoppable as nearly everyone is catching the fever. They had no choice than to openly admit that they have lost to MTN. Even Falzthebadguy was handicapped as he decided to join MTN Pulse.

The panic was so much that the wig of the lady representing Etisalat flew off as the helicopter landed. At this stage, Tekno Miles, Skales and a lady alighted from a chopper as they approached the visibly confused telco representatives.

This new MTN advert is no doubt an appropriate reply to Airtel’s shade earlier this year. We always knew that MTN will get back at airtel and other networks. This reply was probably delayed by the fine slammed on the telco by the Nigerian Communication Commission.

The telco gaint has often been known for producing sterling and hilarious adverts. We all cannot forget how MTN usurped Saka from Etisalat in the porting battle among the telcos.

With this MTN Pulse advert, the question is now is whether Glo, Etisalat, or Airtel will respond to the shade. We are watching!

Imagine a world without language barriers. Introducing the Pilot..

At the convergence of wearable technology + machine translation, the Pilot is the world’s first smart earpiece which translates between users speaking different languages.

It is being introduced by the team from Waverly Labs.

The Pilot is just an earpiece and the package comes with a secondary earpiece (2 earpieces total), 1 portable charger, and an accompanying app. The app is where the languages are downloaded for the earpiece.

The Pilot works only when you are speaking to someone who also has an earpiece. That is why the package comes with two earpieces. Future generations of the earpiece will be updated to listen to EVERYTHING happening around you, not just the person you are talking to.

When introduced this summer, the app will support the following languages – English, Spanish, French and Italian. However additional languages will be available very soon after, including East Asian, Hindi, Semitic, Arabic, Slavic, African, etc.

It is expected to retail between $249-$299. There is an early bird offer. A limited quantity will go for $129, then another round for $149, and then a few more Late Early Bird options for $179+.

EducationSap’s Africa Code Week 2016 Poised To Train 150,000 African Youths by marketresearch(op): 9:24am On May 16, 2016
SAP’s Africa Code Week 2016 poised to train 150,000 African youths to tackle Digital Skills Gap

SAP, through its Africa Code Week in 2016, intends to train more than 150,000 youths in 30 African countries to foster digital literacy and equip the continent’s rising generation with job-relevant digital skills. The Africa Code Week 2016 will run from October 15 – 23, 2016, with thousands of free coding workshops and online trainings offered to children and youth aged 8 to 24.

“Today literacy should go beyond just knowing how to read and write, even beyond digital literacy- knowing how to use computers. Basic literacy for the next generation should be about coding,’ commented Jean Philbert Nsengimana, The Minister of Youth and ICT of the government of Rwanda.

The Africa Code Week 2016 kickoff coincides with The World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa in Kigali, Rwanda, on May 10 – 12*.

The World Economic Forum estimates that Africa’s growth will be just below 5% this year as the global economy continues to suffer. The continent has the fastest growing digital consumer market and the largest working-age population in the world. At the same time, African companies are scrambling to fill positions with employees who possess the right digital skills. Only one percent of African children leave school with basic coding skills.

Africa Code Week 2016 workshops for younger aged groups (8-11, 12-17) will be based on Scratch, a learning platform developed by the MIT Media Lab to simplify coding. Students will learn coding basics and program their own animations, quizzes, and games. Ages 18 and 24 will be taught Introduction to Web Technologies (HTML, CSS,Javascript, PHP, SQL), a workshop that will give them a basic understanding of typical website architecture while teaching them how to create a fully operational, mobile-friendly website.
Africa Code Week 2016 will be organized by SAP and hundreds of partners spanning local African governments, NPOs, NGOs, educational institutions and businesses including the Cape Town Science Centre, the Galway Education Centre, Google, AMPION, the King Baudouin Foundation, and ATOS.

“Digital literacy is the currency of the digital economy. Africa Code Week is a powerful way to spread digital literacy across the continent and contribute towards building the skilled workforce needed for Africa’s sustainable growth. SAP is proud to spearhead such a meaningful initiative in partnership with more than 100 local and international organizations from the public and private sector,” commented Brett Parker, Managing Director SAP Africa.

The initiative will run in Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Critical to the success of the program is the training of thousands of teachers, parents and educators across the 30 African countries. Between the kick-off today and the start of Africa Code Week 2016 in October, SAP will conduct thousands of train-the-trainer sessions to help prepare them for the initiative. In addition, access to OpenSAP online courses enables further scale and impact.

2015 hugely surpassed expected participation Africa Code Week – the largest digital literacy initiative ever organized on the African continent – was launched by SAP and partners in 2015 with the goal of training 20,000 young people across 17 African countries. That goal was surpassed with an impressive 89,000 youth introduced to coding by 1,500 trained trainers across 17 countries in 10 days.

Africa Code Week received a C4F award (category: ‘Education of the Future’) from the World Communications Forum in Davos on March 8, 2016. Africa Code Week, addressing primary and secondary students, is part of SAP’s effort to bridge the digital skills gap and drive sustainable growth in Africa. The company invests in a full cycle of skills support for young people in Africa, including SAP Skills for Africa which gives recent university graduates the business and IT skills needed to be ready to enter the workforce.
