2019 African Games: Nigeria finishes second

After 15 days of intensive competition, the curtain will fall on the 12th African Games tonight in Rabat.

Team Nigeria was conveniently occupying the second spot on the medals table at the close of events on Friday night.

Only two events are yet to be completed.

The position will certainly not change, but there would be additional medals for events not concluded.

Team Nigeria ended Day 15 of the ongoing African Games on a high as its medal haul increased to 126 (46 gold, 33 silver and 47 bronze medals) at the end of proceedings.

Egypt occupied first spot with 102 old medals while South Africa was third with 36 gold medals.

Sade Olatoye was Nigeria’s only individual gold medalist on the last day in athletics as she emerged victorious in the women’s Shot Put. Her first-round attempt of 16.61m was good enough for the gold. It was Olatoye’s second medal of the Games, having won bronze in the Hammer Throw.

In men’s Javelin, Nnamdi Chinecherem won bronze, throwing a distance of 73.24m.

On the track, Divine Oduduru failed to meet the expectations once more as the sprinter once again finished 2nd with a 20.54s clocking in the men’s 200m final.

Nigeria’s other representative, Ogho-Oghene Egwero, was 6th in 21.00s. Zambia’s Sidney Siame won the race with 20.34s.

Nigeria’s only athlete listed to run in the women’s 200m final, Rosemary Chukwuma, did not take part in her race.

In the women’s 400m Hurdles, Abasiono Akpan rallied her way back into contention as she was able to claim bronze for her efforts. She clocked 57.66s.

Nnamdi Chinecherem won bronze in men’s Javelin, throwing a distance of 73.24m. It is his first senior medal, having won gold at the African junior championship in April.

Nigeria women’s 4x400m made up of the quartet of Patience Okon-Geroge, Blessing Oladoye, Kemi Francis and Favour Ofili combined to run a time of 3:30.32s which fetched them gold.

For the men, they settled for bronze in 3:03.42s.

After her earlier heroics, Ayomide Bello showed how good she is in the C1 200m Women Final of Canoeing. She returned a time of 50.51s to win the event. She also teamed up with her compatriot Foloki to win the doubles in the event.

Nigeria on the last day of action in weightlifting got more medals. Obeyi Joseph was the first to clinch the medal as she settled for bronze in the women’s +87kg (245kg), Snatch (105kg) and Clean-Jerk (130kg) classification. In the same vein, Olawale Barde won bronze in the men’s 102kg (343kg), Snatch (158kg) and Clean-Jerk (185kg).

Also, Tijani Abdul secured bronze in the men’s +109kg (323kg), Snatch (180kg) and Clean-Jerk (143kg).

Wrestling

Finally, Nigeria scooped two gold and two silver medals in weightlifting. Daniel Amaas proved too strong for The Gambia’s Mbal Cumba as he edged him 3-1 to win gold in the men’s Freestyle 65kg Finals. Also, Emmanuel John pipped Sami Mustapha 3-1 to claim gold in the men’s Freestyle 74kg final.

Soso Tamurau lost to Egypt’s Hosam Meghany 3-1 to win the men’s Freestyle 97kg final, while Ebikewemimo Wilson was overpowered by Algeria’s Abdelhak Khebache in the men’s Freestyle 57kg final.

On a rather dissaponting note, Nigeria’s wait for a first gold medal since 1973 in the men’s football event continues as the Flying Eagles, who represented the country, lost to Burkina Faso 2-0 in the final.

Nigeria also finished second at the last edition of African Games in Congo Brazzaville albeit with 47 gold medals.

Politics / #revolution_now: DSS Arrests Four Oau Students In Oshogbo by marviessss(m): 9:25pm On Aug 05, 2019

*DSS Arrest Four Students In Peaceful Protest*

The operatives of the State Security Services(SSS) have arrested four students of Obafemi Awolowo University in a protest march that occured today at Osogbo, Osun-state.

The students who participated in the RevolutionNow protest were arrested at the front of National Union Of Journalists' (NUJ), correspondence chapel located in Osogbo. Amongst the arrested students are notable campus activists; Olamarx, Ogunruku and two others.

Eye-witnesses testified that the protest was civil and peaceful until the security operatives pulled a crackdown on the peaceful protesters with guns and canisters.

As at the moment of filing this report, GIW can confirm that they are presently being detained at the DSS facility located in Osogbo. However, while we cannot ascertain their present situation, one of the students have a medical record of chronic asthma- and continous detention might lead to a complication.

It should be recalled that GIW published earlier today that we recieved an intelligence information that the Department of State security (DSS) in Oshogbo have been silently profiling campus activists with the aim of arresting them. This development would come as the earliest manifestation of the intelligence report.

However, we have also recieved another intelligence information that the federal agents have been plotting to arrest more in a grand conspiracy to silence campus activism.

DECLARATION OF ACTION FOR AUGUST 5 2019: DAYS OF RAGE PROTESTS

The Coalition for Revolution, CORE, a political movement of the Nigerian masses and youth raising up from its meeting held on 24 July 2019 at the National Secretariat (Right House) of the Committee For the Defense of Human Rights, CDHR, declared total support for protest movement of the Nigerian masses and youth to commence from August 5 2019.

CORE a growing coalition made up of pro-masses political parties, labour and youth organizations, and the civil society came to the conclusion that if the Nigerian masses do not stand up in action against the barbaric developments around the country, the situation would continue to degenerate.

It is quite clear that the Nigerian ruling elites and their current political regimes of both APC and PDP at all levels of government can never resolve any of the crises plaguing the land as they are co-creation of the corrupt system that pave way for the problems in the first place. The situation has gone from bad to worse and still on the downward slide at an accelerating speed.

There are currently more than a dozen armed conflicts going on around the country with deadly consequences and massive displacements of people. These confirm the reality that Nigeria is tending more towards a FAILED STATE where barbarism reigns supreme. In addition, Nigeria is currently the country with the highest level of poverty globally. Daily reports of killings, kidnapping, attacks, corruption, etc are what currently dominates the media reports.

The last transition program that should have offered a democratic and peaceful change was effectively sabotaged by the status quo within both the APC and PDP. The so-called elections were nothing but a sham and fraud. The current regimes that have emerged offer no solution in anyway, as Buhari regime reinforced the existing pattern of looting and imposition of numerous anti-people economic programs.

The Nigerian masses and youth therefore have no choice but to stand up and storm the streets in protest and with their demands. Change they said never comes easy and if we do not stand up in struggle for freedom, the chains would remain on our necks.

Commencing on Monday August 5 2019, the Coalition for Revolution, would be leading a nationally coordinated protest movement. We have the right to be in rage and to protest. The Aug 5 date was arrived at after series of consultations and meetings. The key five demands of the movement are:

• For an economy that works for the mass majority of the masses and youth. An effective end to the agenda of imposition of IMF/World Bank dictated and ruinous economic attacks on the masses such as increment in fuel and electricity prices, etc
• For an effective and democratic end to insecurity and insurgency, combined with the immediate dismissal of the security chiefs and release of all political prisoners including the Shiite leader Ibrahim el-Zakzaky
• For an end to systemic corruption and for total system change.
• For the immediate implementation of the N30,000.00 minimum wage at all levels at a starter towards a living wage for the working people.
• For an immediate fall of school fees, Education must be a right and not a privilege and restoration of independent student unionism on all campuses.

Series of mobilization and educational activities have been put in place towards the preparation of the mass action. The tagged #RevolutionNow has been adopted for the movement, which would be global.

To dare to struggle is to dare to win
