Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu on Thursday commended the Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, for coming out to contest because he has every right to do so.

However, the monarch empathically said that his support is for Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who he projects to win the election on Saturday, March 18.

Speaking during the visit of the LP candidate to the monarch’s palace, Akiolu, who prayed for Rhodes-Vivour and wish him well in his future endeavours, maintained that there was nothing wrong with Rhodes-Vivour vying.

The monarch said that he has a bright future but this election is not for him to win.

“Please, don’t relent after this contest but I am fully behind Sanwo-Olu,” he told Rhodes-Vivour.

Akiolu commended Sanwo-Olu for the many giant strides he has recorded as governor, noting he became governor as the most difficult time in the state.

“I am not an hero worshipper and gossiper. For Gbadebo, the future is open to you. God will not kill you, there is nothing wrong in you contesting. All of those contesting are my children.

“I pray by the authority in this palace, God should help us to turn the state better. There is no way I can hate the igbos because they are among my best friend.”

The monarch doused the fears expressed by some residents that there would be violence during the election.

He added: “By the grace of God, there would be no trouble. All the false prophets, I am just looking at them. Everything is in the hands of God and within six months of Tinubu, there would be glaring progress.”

Akiolu implored all residents of the state to come out to vote and be peaceful in performing their rights.

He also noted that the majority of politicians are after personal benefits and not after improving society or serving the people.

Labour Party's gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has condemned the attack on Labour Party's Lagos House of Assembly candidate, Olumide Oworu and his campaign team, IGBERETV reports.

Olumide Oworu stated on his Twitter handle that he and members of his team were attacked while campaigning in Surulere on Tuesday 14th March.

Taking to his Twitter handle, GRV wrote;

"I strongly condemn the attacks on Olumide and his team. I have repeatedly called on Governor
@jidesanwoolu
to call his supporters to order. I take his silence to mean he approves the violence.

Make no mistake, we will win on Saturday, and the perpetrators of this violence will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Zayyanu Abubakar, alias Chinnaka, for raping an 8-year-old girl in Wasagu, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of the state, IGBERETV reports.

Spokesman of the command, SP Nafi’u Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, January 19, 2023.

He said that on January 7, at about 4:00pm the father of the girl reported the matter to the Divisional Police Headquarters, Wasagu.

According to the PPRO, the complaint informed the police that the suspect, who lives in Masallaci area of Wasagu, at about 1:00p.m, allegedly raped his daughter, aged eight years.

He said the father alleged that the suspect took the girl into an uncompleted building, threatened to kill her with a knife, ate her fried grasshopper worth N2,500 and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her. The police spokesperson said the suspect had been arrested and transferred to Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Half Salaries: Stop provoking ASUU members – Falana tells FG

Rights activist, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the Federal Government to stop provoking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a dispute over wages.

Falana stated this while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, on Tuesday.

According to him, the lecturers should be paid their full salaries for the months they were on strike.

Recall that ASUU members were on strike between February and October this year, crippling academic activities in public universities across Nigeria.

ASUU called off their eight-month strike on Oct. 14 after the National Industrial Court (NIC) ordered the lecturers to resume.

However, the Federal Government paid half-salaries for the month of Oct., angering ASUU members.

The Federal Government had explained that the lecturers were paid based on the days they worked in the stated month.

But speaking on the development, Falana, a counsel to ASUU, said on Tuesday, “The doctrine of ‘no work, no pay’ is totally inapplicable to ASUU members.

“We are asking all Nigerians who mounted pressure on ASUU to call off the strike . . . all of us have a duty to prevail on the government to stop provoking the lecturers.”

The ongoing fuel scarcity ravaging the country may worsen in Lagos and neighbouring states, as the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, yesterday threatened to shut fuel supplies to the state over alleged violent attacks, intimidation, harassment and extortion of members by hoodlums.

Specifically, NUPENG claimed that hoodlums along Lekki Free Trade Zone Road, Eleko, Ibeju Lekki, parading themselves as community youths under the name of Indigenous Unity Forum, have been harassing, intimidating, and extorting money from every Petroleum Tanker Drivers , PTD, members plying the road.

In a letter to the state governor, titled “Industrial Peace And Harmony  In Lagos State: Demand For Urgent Action”, dated October 28, 2022, NUPENG’s General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, lamented that the union had on several occasions, denounced the activities of these elements and written to several authorities, including security agencies, but to no avail.

The letter read:  “We are deeply constrained to bring to your urgent attention, the unwholesome activities of some criminal elements parading themselves along Lekki Free Trade Zone Road, Eleko Ibeju, Lekki, as community youths under the name of Indigenous Unity Forum, harassing, intimidating, and extorting money from every Petroleum Truck Drivers, who are NUPENG/PTD members plying the road."

INEC releases number of new PVCs still uncollected in Lagos


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said 37,832 of 60,370 newly printed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for new registrants are still uncollected in Lagos State, six months after release.

INEC’s Public Affairs Officer in Lagos State, Mrs Adenike Oriowo, disclosed this in media chat that so many old PVCs were still awaiting their owners to collect them at the 20 Local Government Area  offices of INEC in the state.

Oriowo, who expressed dissatisfaction with the poor turnout and aparty of many electorate to collection of PVCs, urged them not to wait until last minute rush before the  2023 general elections.

She said that the statistics as at Oct. 21 showed that INEC in Lagos state had received 6,570,291 PVCs from the commission’s National Headquarters prior the 2019 general elections.

“Old PVCs collected up till Oct. 21 was 5,644,239 while the total uncollected old PVCs as at the same time was 926,052.

“The new PVCs received from INEC headquarters earlier this year were 60,370 while only 22,538 were collected as at Oct. 21.

“Total uncollected new PVCs as at Oct. 21, was 37,832,” Oriowo said.

She said that the overall total PVCs received from the INEC National headquarters now was 6,630,661.

While the overall total PVCs collected by their owners as at Oct. 21 was 5,666,777, the overall uncollected was 963,884.

Again, petrol shortage emerges in Lagos

Lagosians wrre seen panicking yesterday, as petrol shortage, characterised by long queues started to emerge in the state.

THECONSCIENCEng correspondent who visited outlets, gathered that some filling stations, especially independent marketers, did not have the product to sell to motorists and other consumers.

Marketers with commercial stocks increased their prices, ranging between N200 and N250 per litre, depending on location.

The National Operations Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, who confirmed the development in a telephone interview, attributed it to unsteady supply in the past few days.

He said as a result of the unsteady supply, depots prices have risen to between N175 and N180 per litre in Lagos and its environs.

According to him, “The situation has culminated in higher prices at the depots. Our members, who find it difficult to get the product, pay between N175 – N185 per litre. Consequently, we are compelled to sell at higher prices in order to cover cost.”

However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited did not provide comments.

But recently the company had urged consumers not to panic in Abuja as it was working to restore stable supply.

It had stated: “The current queue situation in some parts of Abuja and its environs is as a result of delays in arrival of fuel trucks. This is happening as a result of heavy flooding that has submerged parts of the highway passing through Lokoja, Kogi State and also an incidence of a failed road section around Badegi-Agaie highway in Niger State.

“Consequently, vehicles, especially fuel tankers, are finding alternative roads to get to their intended destinations”.

Flood management: Buhari gives minister 90 days ultimatum come up with plan

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Water Resources to lead and coordinate with the Ministries of Environment and Transportation as well as state governments to develop a basic plan of action for flood disaster prevention in Nigeria.

The given ultimatum was made known via a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in Abuja yesterday.

The President in the directive, which was conveyed to the Minister in a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, said the plan should be presented to him in 90 days.

The statement said further that “President Buhari is regularly receiving updates on the flooding situation in the country and restates his commitment towards addressing the challenges caused by the disaster in the country.”

Chinese government reacts to news of opening police station in Nigeria

Chinese authorities have debunked viral reports of setting up police stations in Nigeria and other countries where its nationals reside.

Recall that there were viral reports on Tuesday that China opened a police station in the most populous African country among 110 countries to tackle the criminal activities among its people residing abroad.

THECONSCIENCEng gathered that the report emanated from an investigative story from a rights group, Safeguard Defenders with the title ‘110 Overseas Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild.’

While reacting to the report in an interview with Vanguard, a top Chinese official on Wednesday, said diplomatic relations cannot allow any country to open police posts in another sovereign country outside its territories.

The source said, “There is no such station in Nigeria or everywhere. This is because any sovereign country cannot allow other countries to set up their own (police) stations on their land. This is common sense, right?”

The Chinese official, however, said there are outreaches in the countries where Chinese citizens reside to help protect them from terrorism, abduction and other crimes that may endanger the lives of Chinese people.

His words: “Also, there is only one category of outreach services for Chinese communities so China does not have any intention or spare energy to run police stations outside its shores. I hope that maybe you can make an objective report.

He cited cases of abductions in Nigeria as some of the cases handled by the outreach. Recall four Chinese nationals were abducted in Niger State in June 2022.

“You know in Nigeria, there are a lot of insecurity issues happening almost every day. I cannot remember, maybe September or August or July or June, there were terrorists, bandits, they had kidnapped a lot of innocent persons, and also among these innocent persons, there were some Chinese nationals.

He stated that the outreach helped in collaborating with local security operatives in managing the aforesaid incident.

“What I mean (by the outreach services) is that every nation has its mission to care for and help their own nationals. Says another source from the China side.

He furthered: “So they have no right, they have no power to decide or command Nigeria government or police forces, what they can only do is to assist or play the outside role to help the Chinese nationals.”

“So the fundamental reason or factor is the locals and the Nigerian government, so we fully respect the sovereignty issue. So there is no sovereignty issue, so the report ( Safeguard Defenders’ ‘110 Overseas Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild’) is fake news,”

A former inmate, Mr Christian Akara, has stated that no fewer than 150 persons were killed by an armed squad during an invasion of the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos State.

Akara gave the testimony on Tuesday while speaking before Magistrate A. O. Komolafe of the Lagos Island Coroner Division sitting at Court 4, Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the coroner inquest was to unravel the circumstances that led to the killing of some inmates in the prison on October 22, 2020.

Akara was responding to questions from Mrs Amanda Demechi-Asagha, an interested party in the inquest and counsel for a deceased inmate, Shola Raphael.

Demechi-Asagha is also the President of the African Women Lawyers Association.

He said while he was at the custodial centre, he volunteered as a teacher under the Muharam Sisters, a non-governmental organisation, to teach some inmates English Language.

The witness said he saw a number of armed men entering the facility and shooting directly at inmates.

He said the armed squad shot inmates at the centre around 11.59am, adding that no fewer than 150 people lost their lives during the attack.

Akara said, “I went to Cell D5 for safety because my cell wasn’t safe. After all the shootings, the armed men ordered us to move from Cell D5 to Cell D7 and shot the last person.

“They also shot the governor of Cell D7, Ifeanyi. Some of us were chosen to carry the dead bodies. There were more than 150 dead bodies.

"We observed starvation for two weeks after the invasion. There was no food, and we barely had enough water to drink.”

He identified some of those killed to include one Promise Nnuigwe of Cell B2, one Raphael Olusola of Cell D8, and one Ifeanyi of Cell D7.

Asked why he chose to testify, Akara said, “I want those responsible for the attack to be brought to book.”

The Coroner, Komolafe, adjourned the case till December 19 and 20 for further hearing.

Sanwo-Olu appoints VC of LASUSTECH


The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the appointment of Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya as the substantive and pioneer Vice–Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.

Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Special Adviser on Education to the Governor made this known in a statement on Wednesday, in Lagos. According to him, the appointment of the VC takes effect from Sept. 29.

He commended and appreciated LASUSTECH’s former acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nurudeen Olaleye, for using his experience and good managerial skill to set the new university on a good track.

“Posterity will judge him aright as one of the foundation management heads of the university in the future.

“His efforts will pave the way for the new administration to start on a good pedestal,” the statement read in part.

“Olaleye had been directed by the State Government to resume his duty post as the LASPOTECH’s substantive Rector for the next three years and two months remaining for him to complete his tenure,” Wahab said.

NAN reports that the transmuted universities are Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu to the Lagos State University of Science and Technology; and Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education to Lagos State University of Education, Ijanikin.

At the take-off of the new university, Sanwo-Olu approved the appointment of the then substantive Rector of the former Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Olaleye, as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, pending the appointment of the substantive Vice-Chancellor.

IGP reacts on Abuja Prof who beat policewoman for refusing to do house chores


The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba has condemned the assault on a female police cop, Inspector Teju Moses, by a legal practitioner and human rights activist, Prof. Zainab Duke, her domestic staff, Rebecca Enechido, as well as a male suspect on the run.

Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this on Thursday.

He noted that Duke grievously assaulted her orderly in company of some accomplices on Tuesday, September 29, 2022, at her residence in Garki, Abuja, due to the refusal of the orderly to breach professional ethics by carrying out menial and domestic chores at her house.

“The IGP has directed the express prosecution of the arrested suspects who are currently in Police custody, as the preliminary investigation shows overwhelming evidence of culpability on the part of the professor and her domestic staff.

“The IGP has equally tasked the investigative team to ensure that the fleeing suspect is arrested and made to face the wrath of the law,” Adejobi said.

He, however, noted that it was pertinent to clarify that the suspect, Zainab, who name-drops the IG, his family members, and other officers in the top hierarchy of the force, has no acquaintance with the police in any form as spread on social media.

He added, “The IG, who similarly ordered the withdrawal of all police personnel attached to the professor, expressed consternation at the fact that an individual who claims to be an advocate for human rights could stoop so low to violate the rights of another individual, a police officer tasked with ensuring her protection.”

JAMB Registrar calls for autonomy, move to increase form fee

The Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, Ishaq Oloyede has disclosed that parents and guardians can afford to pay more for the UTME examination, as the body seeks financial autonomy.

Oloyede, who appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on Wednesday, said the body is seeking to exit the annual budget but must be given permission to increase UTME fees to N5,000 from N3,500.

The registrar said the fees were reduced in 2017 because the body is not a revenue-generating agency, however, inflation and other economic realities now call for drastic measures.

When confronted by lawmakers on the impact of the proposed increment on parents, Oloyede responded that some parents pay extra for miracle centres.

He stated that the proposed increment is insignificant but will allow the body to be fully independent.

“We cancelled some centres because we heard that some parents paid N200,000 per child. There was a time we opened a platform for upgrades, a lot of people paid.

“I believe we should revert to the N5000 we were charging. Given the inflation, if we charge N10,000– I am just giving it as an example, nobody will ask the federal government for one kobo. I am not aware of anywhere in the world, except maybe Finland— that charges as low as JAMB is charging. In Finland, we know that everything is free,” he said.


However, he maintained that the body is comfortable with the existing arrangement, noting that the arrangement is offered as an alternative in the face of the budget deficit facing the federal government.
