KANO— Vice President Namadi Sambo had a raw deal in the hands of suspected thugs in Kano, Monday, when he was held hostage for 20 minutes before a negotiated settlement. The incident occurred at the old campus of Bayero University Kano shortly after the number two citizen rounded up official engagement in the university. It took the intervention of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 1, Tambari Yabo, before the vice president regained his freedom. The drama began when dozens of heavily armed thugs who posed as loyal party men beat the security cover around the vice president. Like a well rehearsed script, some of the thugs in unison chorused on top of their voices “Bamuayi, Bamuayi, Bamuayi” which means “we are no longer with you,” while others shouted “mungaji da aiki banza,” meaning “we are tired of the job.” Before the visibly shocked Sambo could utter a word, an equally embarrassed AIG Tamara Yabo ordered his men to disarm the protesting thugs. However, it was at this juncture that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stalwarts in the vice president’s entourage moved in and demanded to know from ‘the boys’ why they chose to embarrass the vice president. The thugs, explaining their position, told the vice president how they had risked their lives for PDP in the state, but that no one has paid them anything despite promises. The party officials were, therefore, directed by the vice president to attend to their needs and save the party public embarrassment. The thugs later rejoined the vice president convoy and headed to other areas of engagement in the city. FG spends N34bn on higher institutions in Kano Meanwhile, Sambo has said that the Federal Government, through intervention programmes under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, had expended over N34 billion on the provision of various developmental programmes and projects on higher institutions in Kano State. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/thugs-held-sambo-hostage-in-kano/ |

A half-filled stadium marked the presidential campaign rally of President Goodluck Jonathan at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, as the President rounded off his re-election campaign in the North-West zone of the country on Saturday. The 25,000 capacity stadium was half filled as many supporters shunned the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate’s rally. A visibly angry deputy governor of the state, Amb. Nuhu Bajoga, was spotted by our correspondent at the rally, complaining bitterly to members of the local organising committee at the main bowl of the stadium. He reportedly told the committee to “go and bring the crowd.” It was gathered that the ‘welfare package” for supporters were allegedly diverted by some unnamed officials of the local organising committee. Curiously, a section of the stadium, rather than praising the president, started singing “sai Buhari,” a situation that forced security operatives to chase the disgruntled supporters out of the stadium. The president, who arrived the stadium at about 1.30pm, went round the scanty stadium, before taking his seat. In his speech, Jonathan said Kaduna was one of the major beneficiaries of the Federal Government and as such, it was payback time for the people of the state to re-elect him in the February 14 election. He said the state was the focus of the Federal Government in the next four years if elected. He added that the collapsed textile mills in the state would be revived, so as to create jobs for the teeming youths in the state. Jonathan noted that the state must work with the party for the development of the state. Vice President Namadi Sambo had earlier, in his speech, said the people of the state appreciated the gesture of the president for his(Sambo) choice as his running mate in the February poll. He described the president as patriotic and detribalised and therefore urged the people of the state to vote the party in all the elections. Sambo said the president loved the people of the region, pointing out that the president was determined to bring back the collapse industry in Kaduna State through the establishment of the 215-megawatt Kudendan Power Plant in the state. Also, Senate President David Mark said Kaduna was important to the party, as according to him, if the state leads, other parts of the North would follow in the forthcoming election. http://www.punchng.com/news/poor-turnout-as-jonathan-takes-campaign-to-kaduna/ |

The family of the late Afenifere leader and first civilian governor of Ondo State, late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party against using their fathers name as a campaign smear against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. The Ajasin family also said they had forgiven Muhammadu Buhari over the arrest of their father under his military administration in 1984. Speaking on behalf of the family, Chief Tokunbo Ajasin, said in Akure on Thursday that his father forgave Buhari before his death. Tokunbo therefore cautioned politicians particularly those seeking for elective positions to base their campaigns on issues rather than using his father’s name to campaign against the progressives which he (Ajasin) belonged to when he was alive. Chief Tokumbo said there was no any judicial pronouncement or ruling under Buhari’s government where his father was sentenced to prison or indicted “It will be totally wrong for anybody to say that Gen. Buhari jailed my father. No that is not correct. It was true that my father was detained under Gen. Buhari’s military regime along with other former governors in Nigeria and two panels of enquiry were consequently set-up to look into the allegations against my father and others, but the panels found my father innocent and exonerated him as well. “What Buhari did then was part of military policies and tradition. Though many Nigerians were not happy with that but my father had since forgiven Buhari before his demise. “Let me also tell you that as far as the issue is concerned, the family of Ajasin had forgiven Buhari as well. Because as Christians we should learn and exhibit the spirit of forgiveness always. The Bible says, father forgive us as we forgive those who offend us,” he stated. Chief Ajasin said he met Buhari at a function sometime ago and happily embraced each other indicating that all was well. According to him, himself and his sister, Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose, were part of the crowd that received Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo at the Akure airport during his presidential campaign rally in ondo State . Also the Ondo State Coordinator of Buhari/Osinbajo presidential campaign, Mr. Ife Oyedele, accused the PDP of unduly capitalizing on the Buhari/Ajasin saga to score cheap political points. He said APC as a progressive party should be more concerned about the welfare of Ajasin’s family than the PDP that is antagonistic of the interest of the Yoruba race. “You cannot cry more than the bereaved. We are happy that the Ajasin family has come to clear the air on this issue,” Oyedele said. http://www.punchng.com/news/stop-using-ajasin-for-smear-campaign-against-buhari-family/ |

The Editor-in-Chief, Vanguard Media Limited,Vanguard Avenue, Kirikiri Canal, Apapa, Lagos. Re: ‘Millions in the South may not vote’ I write on behalf of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, to complain about the deliberate falsehood and misinformation contained in the Cover page story of Sunday Vanguard edition for January 4, 2015, titled as stated above. The story in question provided statistics about the collection rate of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across 28 states, in a 36-states-plus-one (i.e., the Federal Capital Territory) federation; but proceeded to infer a conclusive regional design of higher collection rate in one section of the country than the other. Consequently, the story was deliberately mute on, or simply ignored the following: (i) That the document your writer apparently sourced his figures from (which the Commission voluntarily put in public domain since early December 2014) clearly indicated that distribution of PVCs continued at local government offices of INEC at the end of the three-day exercise at polling unit level. (ii) That differences in levels of turn-out by people for their PVCs is not the making of INEC, since the Commission has put in place the same procedure across the country guaranteeing equal access to persons wanting to collect their cards. Rather than concoct conspiracy theories about INEC, a desire for public good should have motivated your writer to encourage persons in areas where collection rate is relatively low to urgently go and pick their PVCs; and (iii) That 28 states out of 36 states plus the FCT is not a complete picture, contrary to the writer’s pretention that he was presenting a comprehensive national profile. As a matter of fact, in calculating the percentages, your writer not only understated the percentage for South-West, for instance, if you take the average of individual state percentages that he himself indicated, he also conveniently ignored the fact that distribution in Ekiti and Osun states that was done earlier in 2014 was not included. Really, nothing can surpass these in intellectual dishonesty and vocational mischief! It was expected that your reporter, if his motive were to sincerely inform the public, would have requested from INEC its official figures for the entire country on the subject of the story. The Commission has nothing to hide; so, kindly find attached the authentic data on the distribution of PVCs across the country to date. Note also, kindly, that these figures are far from being final for the 2015 general election, since PVC distribution by INEC continues until close to the elections. It is also observed that the story alleges all manners of ‘conspiracies’ in the operations of INEC, including an allegation that “District Heads (in the North) were allowed to collect PVCs on behalf of prospective voters.” Sir, nothing can be further from the truth. The deliberate falsehood intended by your reporter was underscored by the fact that the story only cited unnamed (certainly fictitious) sources as well as purported ‘investigation’ by the paper; while no identifiable spokesperson of the Commission was given a say – even if only for record purposes. Certainly, this does not show the basic ethic of balanced reporting that is expected in responsible journalism. Comments, as they say, are free but facts are sacred. It amounts to sheer malevolent journalism for one to cite cold statistics in making fabled claims. That is what your reporter has done and, with due respect, it really belittles your reputed newspaper stable and smacks of hatchet job for vested interests. Sir, we all have a stake in this country and should be keen to contribute to the success of the imminent general election. Your newspaper will account to history if it falsely fans the embers of ethnicity and sectionalism as could create needless tensions in the polity around the elections. Even then, the dictates of professional ethics require some modicum of scrupulousness in the dissemination of information for public consumption! Wishing you well and God’s guidance. …Buhari pledges not to be dictatorial if elected By Daud Olatunji ABEOKUTA – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Tuesday, said the report of the probe panel he set up when he held sway as the country’s president did not indict the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen . Muhammadu Buhari of corruption during his tenure as the Petroleum Trust Fund boss. Obasanjo however, said the probe panel discovered that, the Buhari-led PTF was inconsistent in its policies, saying other probe attempts on the activities of the former Head of state ‘was immaterial’. The former President stated this while paying host to Buhari who visited him at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta before his campaign rally at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Buhari was accompanied by his running mate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, the party national Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, national leader of the party and former governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, former Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Bernabas Gemade; former governor of Osun state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Ekiti state, Segun Oni and the host governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosu. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/obasanjo-clears-buhari-ptf-alleged-fraud/ |
The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, has dissociated himself from an online report of January 9 calling for the arrest and prosecution of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for allegedly making unguarded statements. He also called on politicians canvassing for elective posts to discuss ideas and policies that will enhance the growth and development of the country and not to heat up the polity. In a statement made available to journalists on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, the bishop said he was not aware of the online report until he started receiving calls from concerned people. He said, “A news story was published in 2012 by ‘Punch’ and some newspapers on my comment on the alleged statement by Maj. Gen. Buhari (retd.) after the 2011 general elections in Nigeria. It is the story the dirty people are now manipulating as an interview I just granted in 2015.” Ajakaye described the online story as a practical example of “politics of desperation and manipulation”, saying those behind the recycled story were agents of “division and darkness.” The bishop, who said the country was passing through a difficult time called on all Nigerians including religious leaders to work together to avoid the total collapse of the country. “Inevitably this is the actual time for change and we must not allow the wind of change to pass us by. “All of us, including religious leaders, must work together for this change if we do not want Nigeria to collapse totally,” he said. While calling for the sincerity of all stake holders towards ensuring credible elections, the cleric called for the the independence of judiciary and prosecution of anybody found culpable in election rigging. “In the same way, the judiciary must live up to its expectation. It must maintain its independence and identity, rather than be in the pockets of the executive. To avoid unnecessary tension and crisis in our society, the judiciary must strive to speed up the various election petitions.” The bishop described politics as a clean game which he said was for service and good governance for the benefit of mankind though he agreed that there were “dirty people in Nigeria” who engaged in politics. Such people, the bishop said were in politics to acquire power, prestige and money and could do anything to achieve their ambition. The Katsina State Inter-faith Committee has denied the destruction of a church in Matazu Local Government Area by the Katsina Urban and Regional Planning Development Authority (KURPDA). The chairman of the committee, Isah Dodo, made the denial on Saturday in Matazu during a visit to the area. He said that the committee was mandated to investigate and ascertain the true picture of the matter. He explained that the affected area was a pathway between a school and staff quarters of the church. Dodo further explained that the church decided to fence the school and the staff quarters, thereby blocking the pathway, which had been in existence for more than 20 years. He said that the committee’s investigation showed that the church did not get permission from the authorities before it fenced the area in question. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/01/katsina-govt-denies-destroying-church/ |

January 1, 2015 by Aljazeera Men playing the part of enemies of the state in a ‘mock terror’ drill in the Indian state of Gujarat were made to wear the traditional Muslim hat, triggering indignation in political circles that Muslims are terrorists, local media have reported. India Today reported on Thursday that video footage gained from a drill conducted in the town of Surat on Saturday, showed ‘terrorists’ dressed in the traditional skull cap as it is known and widely associated with the Muslim community in India. The incident drew outrage within political ciricles. The Congress party described it as an administrative failure. Mehboob Ali Sufi Baba, Gujarat BJP’s minority cell president, said the incident only served to stereotype the Muslim community. “This type of act sends a wrong message to the masses,” Baba said. Responding to media reports, Pradeep Sejul, deputy superintendent of police, told journalists the incident was “avoidable” and “should not have happened”. “Mock drills were carried out in 10-15 locations. This should not have happened; it was an avoidable mistake. We assure you that if someone deliberately made the mistake, we will take action against them,” he said. The police in the state were preparing for two high-profile events after intelligence reports suggested they may be vulnerable to terror attacks. Rising tensions! The incident comes after a series of events seen to be raising communal tensions in the country. Last week, a Hindu man posing to be a Muslim on Twitter claimed to have set off a bomb in the southern city of Bangeluru. Police however, suspect that members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India were involved in the blast that left a woman dead. Since early December, far-right Hindu groups allied with the ruling BJP have been accused of forced conversions of Christians and Muslims to Hinduism. The events are called “homecomings,” with organisers saying they were reconverting people whose ancestors had once been Hindu. Some of the Muslims converted in the city of Agra, though, later said they’d either been offered allurement to convert or threatened with violence if they did not. The simmering religious issues have boiled over into parliament, with opposition lawmakers all but shutting down the legislature over charges that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done little to stop the ceremonies. Modi has been critised for not addressing the issue head-on. http://www.punchng.com/news/muslim-terror-drill-draws-outrage-in-india/ |

A Cameroonian investigative journalist, Bisong Etahoben, is reporting via Twitter the arrest of Mahamat Bichara Gnoti, a close associate of Chadian President IIdriss Déby Itno. Mr. Gnoti was reportedly arrested on the Chadian-Sudan border with 19 SAM2 missiles he purchased from the Sudanese army meant for the Boko Haram terrorist network in northeastern Nigeria. Mr. Gnoti who claimed that President Idriss Déby gave him the funds to purchase the weapons, had waved a presidential pass issued to him by Mr. Deby’s office in order to get past border guards but was stopped and searched by the guards who found the deadly weapons on him. There has not been an official confirmation or denial either by the Chadian or the Nigerian authorities. A text message sent to the office of Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), the National Security Adviser in Nigeria regarding Gnoti’s arrest did not receive a response, an aide said Mr. Dasuki is traveling in Mexico. However, the arrest of Mr. Gnoti, if confirmed, will provide solid evidence that the Chadian president is largely behind the Boko Haram lightning insurgency in Nigeria’s northwest. Mr. Derby recently swindled the Nigerian government out of millions of dollars in Nigeria's failed attempt to negotiate the release of some 200 high school girls abducted by Boko Haram from Chibok town last April. On September 8th President Goodluck Jonathan made a dramatic visit to N’djamena to meet with Idris Derby, Mr. Jonathan was accompanied on the trip by the former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sherrif. The visit was condemned by opposition figures and civil society groups in Nigeria as they see it as an open embrace of individuals funding Boko Haram militants. An Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis had accused Mr. Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika of actively funding Boko Haram. A 53-year-old Pastor in Nsukka, Enugu state has been arrested by the Nigerian police for tricking several women into having sex with him, after claiming that he was being directed by the Holy Spirit. The arrested Pastor, identified as Timoty Ngwu of Ministry of Holy Trinity, works among the Umudikwere community. The man is said to have had sexual relations with several women in the name of God. However, his wife Veronica could no longer ignore his fraud, especially after he impregnated her teenage niece. The Pastor locked up his wife, after she confronted him about his deeds. However, Veronica managed to escape with one of her daughters. She then approached the Criminal Investigations Department unit, which handles child sex abuse cases, and lodged a criminal case against her husband. Veronica, in her written complaint, alleged that when the Pastor converts married woman and single girls, he would fool them, claiming that God wanted them to have sexual relations with him. "I could not stomach his 'rascality' anymore," Veronica stated in her complaint, reportedVanguard. Following his arrest, the accused Pastor said that he had intercourse with married women as he was guided by the Holy Spirit to do so but insisted that he would always take the consent of their husbands. Related Nigerian Woman Delivers Healthy Baby Boy Four Years after Getting Pregnant Human Meat being Sold for $6000 in Nigeria The police investigations also found that the accused Pastor had fooled several young gullible girls. The investigators also found two young women in the church property who had left their husbands and were living with the Pastor. The women claimed that the Pastor had asked them to leave their husbands as the Holy Spirit wanted them to serve the anointed servant of God. The Pastor has now been charged with child sex abuse. It is believed that at least 100 women, including girls as young as 11, might have been victimized by the accused.
