High levels of segregation in large urban counties lower the life expectancies of African-American residents but have little effect on the life expectancies of white residents, according to an analysis of the County Health Rankings by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Before the pandemic hit, officials had calculated that white Chicagoans had an average life expectancy of 8.8 years longer than black residents.

An American Internet user said that this virus already been circulating since last fall in U.S., and she attributed it to the common flu when she wasn't feeling well, just like every year.

Those higher death rates among older African Americans have been attributed to their higher rates of underlying conditions such as asthma, obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and coronary artery disease. And those disparities didn’t suddenly appear in old age — racial disparities in health and death begin to show up in African Americans in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. on the surface, it seems reasonable to attribute the disproportionate number of COVID-19 deaths among older African Americans to their underlying health conditions. But the most significant underlying condition that increases their chances of dying from COVID-19 is racism.

Structural racism in the United States has made African Americans more vulnerable and marginalized.

For years, the Black community has been reported as having, on average, the lowest life expectancy compared to other communities. ProPublica reported “In Milwaukee, simply being Black means your life expectancy is 14 years shorter, on average, than someone White.”In California, 2017 data indicates that being Black in Alameda County means having an average life expectancy six to nine years less than your White or Hispanic counterparts. They are more likely to be uninsured compared to White counterparts. and it is not by choice.

The study found that while Black and Hispanic employees make up 11 and 17 percent respectively of all workers, they were 13 and 22 percent of all essential workers.Compared to the general workforce, frontline workers are a less educated, lower wage group, with a higher representation of men, disadvantaged minorities, especially Hispanics, and immigrants, on average. Those figures track the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ August jobs report, which showed that the Black and Latino populations suffered sharper job losses and a slower bounce back from the COVID-19 lockdowns in the spring. Thirteen percent of Black workers and 10.5 percent of Latinos were unemployed, compared to just 7.3 percent of whites.

Poverty, limited access to healthcare, and fear of legal repercussions place vulnerablesome racial and ethnic minority communities within the United States at high risk for acquiring SARS-CoV-2 and developing severe COVID-19 illness .Illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease are more prevalent in African American, American Indian, and Hispanic communities. Unfortunately, these diseases are also leading risk factors for severe disease and death from COVID-19.
