The Central Bank of Nigeria [CBN] has imposed a total fine of N3.2bn on United Bank for Africa Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, and Sterling Bank Plc for committing various kinds of regulatory infractions.

UBA had the highest fine among the four banks, paying the sum of N2.969bn as penalty to the CBN for committing eight offences.

The offences are: failing to meet the Treasury Single Account reporting and remittance deadline, N2.946bn; failure to update customers’ records and conducting continuous due diligence on some accounts, N2m; and failing to review credit policy at least every three years in line with section 3.1 of the prudential guidelines 2010, N4m.

Others are bidding for export proceeds in excess of the Bankers’ Committee guidance rates, N4.8m; violating the CBN circular in respect of the 2015 Risk-based Examination, N2m; and inadvertent omission of two customers from the PEP returns, N2m.

Zenith Bank, which had the second largest fine, paid the sum of N60.1m to the central bank for committing nine offences.

The CBN fined GTBank the sum of N60.05m for committing three offences in the 2015 financial year. The offences involved delay in transmitting the list of the TSA names to the CBN, N2m; late rendition of returns, N50,000; and contravention of the CBN circular on prior clearance of prospective employees of banks, N4m.

Sterling Bank, which had the least fine among the four banks, was fined N13m for committing five offences.

In a move to develop a modern marine transport sector, the Rivers State Government has commenced the reconstruction of the ATC Jetty in Okrika. The government is also reconstructing the Bille and Bonny Jetties in Port Harcourt.
This is in line with the New Rivers Vision Development Blueprint of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike which seeks to create a safe and secure Marine Transportation System across the Riverine Communities of the state. Governor Wike during an inspection visit to the Bille Jetty in Borikiri, Port Harcourt directed the Ministry of Transport to work with relevant technocrats to revive dilapidated jetties across the state.
The Governor noted that his administration remains committed to ensuring that Rivers people travel in safety to their respective communities as they engage in their socio-economic activities. In line with the vision of the governor, the Rivers State Commissioner for Transport, Deacon Akie Fubara recently inspected the ATC jetty reconstruction project at Okrika.
He expressed satisfaction that the contract has commenced the reconstruction of the strategic Jetty with the deployment of necessary equipment and materials. The Commissioner implored the contractor to reconstruct the Jetty in line with approved specifications and scheduled time for the delivery of the project.
He maintained that the Wike administration will not tolerate laxity in the handling of any project funded by the state government.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has advised former Governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, to accept the reality that his political party lost the rerun elections and allow the state government focus on the rebuilding of the state.

Governor Wike said that the administration has deployed resources and expertise to correct the failures of the Amaechi administration.

He said: "I call on the former Governor and leader of the APC in the State to accept the reality that the re-run elections has woefully been lost by his party and that Rivers people have, again, overwhelmingly re-affirm their confidence, trust and preference for the PDP.

"Therefore, spare us the agony of unnecessary hostility and allow Rivers State to move forward in peace and security. We expect you to use your high office and connections to attract meaningful development projects to the State as I did during my time; not senseless and unpatriotic distractions. Enough is enough.

" All of us are aware of the sorry state of things in Rivers State before May 29 2015. Between October 25 2007 and May 28 2015 over three trillion naira accrued from all revenue sources to the State. Nollywood actress and ex president Ibinabo Febrisima has been granted bail on the 7th of April 2016 according to Daily Post.

The actress was taken to prison to begin serving a 5-year jail term after the Court of Appeal in Lagos tossed out her over the manslaughter charge on death of a medical doctor, Giwa Suraj who died in a motor accident in an auto accident along Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos in 2006.

Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur of the appeal court said on Thursday, April 7, 2016 he was granting the actress bail pending the determination of a suit filed by her at the Supreme court.

JULIUS BERGER NOW CHARGED WITH ENDING PERSISTENT FLOODING ON ABA ROAD, PORT HARCOURT

Mr. Cyril Wite, the Special Adviser to Governor Wike on Special Projects, earlier today embarked on an on-the-spot assessment of flooded parts of Port Harcourt/ Aba Express road. Areas visited were St. John's Bus Stop, Market Bus Stop and First Bank Bus Stop all along the busy Port Harcourt/ Aba express road.

During the visit Mr. Cyril Dum Wite, who was in the company of representatives of Construction giant, Julius Berger, met and had discussions with the authorities at the Airforce Base towards ameliorating the difficulties being experienced by commuters along the road.

Mr. Wite appealed to motorists and road users plying the road for patience and assured that Governor Wike had mandated Julius Berger to bring a permanent end to the flooding problem.
Aba road is a Federal road and has for some years been dogged by persistent flooding during raining seasons.
