PoliticsPresident Buhari: CAMA Law Would Enhance Transparency by Mazigabriel(op): 7:14pm On Sep 24, 2020
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd.) , on Thursday, said the Companies and Allied Matters Act , 2020 which he recently signed into law would enhance transparency and corporate accountability and help the fight against corruption.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity , Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement titled “ CAMA Act will help us fight corruption, President Buhari explains at UNGA high -level summit .”
The presidential spokesman said Buhari spoke in a video message presented at the Open Government Partnership 2020 Virtual Leaders’ Summit on the sidelines of the 75 th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
The President spoke at a time stakeholders , including the Christian Association of Nigeria , are faulting some provisions of the law .
Adesina quoted the President as saying that “ Since the inception of our administration in 2015 , the government has been committed to changing international and domestic perceptions regarding Nigeria ’s commitment to fight corruption and foster good governance .
“ We focused on the task of dealing head -on with this destructive monster , which led to us joining the Open Government Partnership and making reform commitments such as to establish a public central register of beneficial owners of corporate entities .
“ Since then, we have made significant progress in implementing tougher anti-corruption measures, including my recent assent to the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 .
“ The Act provides a legal framework for the implementation of Beneficial Ownership Information Disclosure in Nigeria .
” Being an OGP member -country has helped Nigeria learn from other countries tackling similar challenges, and to build a coalition to support these reforms across the private sector and civil society. It has also aided our journey towards building citizens’ trust in government. ”
On the COVID- 19 pandemic, Buhari said it had become clear that governments cannot solve all the challenges of the pandemic alone. He argued that it is only through open governance and working with citizens that nations can succeed.
” We face a significant contraction in the global economy in 2020 ; the world is facing the unprecedented twin challenges of managing the health and economic impacts of the pandemic . ”
In these times, citizens worldwide are seeking more information, engagement , and support from their governments ,” he added .

PoliticsWhy I Have Decided To Support Ize Iyamu Against Obaseki - Okunbo by Mazigabriel(op): 2:58pm On Sep 07, 2020
The Chairman, Ocean Marine Solution, Capt . Hosa Okunbo, has said he decided to support the All Progressives Congress candidate in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State , Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu, because the party will work to develop the state.
Okunbo, who said this in an interview in Abuja, described himself as a very close person to Governor Gowdin Obaseki , but said the governor should not be allowed to get a second term.
“ I still consider Godwin my brother , but I don’t consider him a leader because he doesn’ t have the attributes of a good leader,” he said.
Okunbo in the interview berated Obaseki, saying, “ A governor that could not manage 24 House of Assembly members from his own party – they were not in opposition, all APC. Some of us worked to make that possible for him so he could have a smooth ride but he squandered the chance .
“ It’ s only unfortunate that Osagie Ize- Iyamu, who also contested against him in 2016, is out there and I am supporting him by default and of course, I want a better Edo State and that’s all I can say . ”
Okunbo accused Obaseki of non- performance, saying most of the lofty ideas he floated before his election in 2016 had remained on paper without being fulfilled , while he had sustained himself in office through propaganda.
He stated, “If Godwin presents to you his plans for Edo State on PowerPoint, you will kiss his feet. It is like in the Bible when the devil said take all these and bow before me and Jesus said, ‘Get thee behind me Satan ’. And as we progressed , all those packages that he presented , none was done.
“ I learnt most of them are all on paper and they continue to be on paper and consultancy services attached to most of them. Of course, as we speak, most of those projects are not on the ground and as for me, I can’ t be deceived. Some can be deceived, but I cannot .
“ A situation , where you have 600 children packed in a room and selling propaganda on social media of projects that are not there ? It is appalling .
“ It is the future of our children that is at stake; the liberation of our state from someone who thinks he is an emperor in this modern day is at stake. ”
Okunbo alleged that Obaseki started a fierce battle against his business interests because of a rumour that was going round in the state that he ( Okunbo) was planning to contest against him in the coming election.
He said, “ A lot of people approached me to run as the governor of Edo State and most of the people who did will tell you that I said I wasn’ t interested because I have set a trajectory for my life and over the past 32 years, I have been involved in business and before that, I was a very good professional pilot .
“ At 63, my mates that ran for governorship did that in 1999 and I was not ready to start learning new things . That is one of the reasons I tried to help Godwin, because in his old age, he could not learn new things ; that is why he fell a victim . ”
Okunbo explained that he warned Obaseki to settle the rift between him and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, who was then the Chairman of the APC.
He said Obaseki refused to listen to him and follow the line of peace , adding that the governor rather warned him to steer clear of the raging battle or suffer “ a collateral damage .

He said, “ Edo State is peaceful , the Peoples Democratic Party is committed to enduring peace before, during and after the poll.
“ The APC leaders and the governorship candidate , Osagie Ize -Iyamu, are agitated because they are not ready for the election. They are convinced that they do not stand any chance in the forthcoming election.
“ They are behaving like some unserious and misguided university students , who do not read, and when faced with examinations, they engage in cult fights few weeks to the examination , so that the school authority will shift the examination . ”
He emphasized that the state was peaceful as people were going about their business peacefully, and urged the APC candidate and his handlers to concentrate on their campaign.
When Osagie was told later that his response did not address Okunbor ’s allegations , he sent the same statement again.
CrimePolicemen Detained A Doctor In Lagos Which Led To The Death Of A Pregnant Woman by Mazigabriel(op): 2:50pm On Sep 07, 2020
The life of a pregnant woman may have been saved if the doctor that was to operate on her was not allegedly held by policemen enforcing the curfew in place to restrict movement amid the COVID- 19 pandemic .
PUNCH Metro gathered that the surgeon was held for about one hour on Airport Road , Ikeja , Lagos State , as entreaties that she was on an emergency call , fell on deaf ears.
After she was released, the doctor reportedly got to the hospital and discovered that both the pregnant woman and her to- be child were dead.
Our correspondent was told that the incident happened on Monday , August 31 , 2020 , at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba , Surulere .
The deceased was identified only as Mistura.
Prior to last Thursday , the police enforced a nationwide curfew from 10 pm till 4 am.
However, medical workers, journalists , and other essential service providers were exempted from the curfew .
A witness, who did not want to be identified, said the female doctor broke down in tears upon seeing that she could not save Mistura and her baby .
The witness said, “ The doctor is a woman . In fact , she was also ill and was placed on a drip at home when she was called for the emergency .
“ Because her car was bad , she got a cabman to take her to the hospital. She left her house around past 9 pm.
“ Around 10 . 15 pm, they got to the under bridge around Airport Road , where they met the policemen. They had been stopped by other policemen before they got to that spot. But when she showed them her ID card , they allowed her to pass.
“ But these ones refused . After she showed one of them her ID card and said she was on an emergency to see a patient who was between life and death, the policeman ordered the driver to park . He took her ID card and asked her to prove she was on an emergency .
“ She went to meet another member of the team and begged him that she needed to leave immediately and that the life of her patient was at risk. She was in a nightgown ; she could not even change when she got the call . But the second policeman shunned her .
“ The policeman said she was foolish and she was a prostitute because a doctor would never dress the way she was dressed. She begged them and explained the circumstances but they refused to listen and demanded the emergency letter.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that after keeping the doctor for about one hour , she was released.
However, our correspondent was told that it was already late , as the patient had died .
When the case got complicated , she was referred to LUTH , where she died after suffering internal bleeding .
“ There were four policemen on duty that night. Only one was on mufti. Their tags were not visible because they wore overalls. They saw the drip in the doctor ’ s hand; she was risking her life to save another person but they never allowed her , ” the source added .
Our source said efforts by the doctor to call a phone number on the policemen ’s van were abortive .
The number, 09051614394, which a phone application , True Caller, identified as OPS Office Air, was not reachable for about three days that our correspondent tried it.
A spokesman for LUTH , Kelechi Otuneme, promised to react after speaking to a consultant at the hospital.
He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report .
The Public Relations Officer of the Airport Police Command, Alabi Joseph, expressed shock at the incident and promised to investigate it.
A senior police officer , who did not speak on record, however , said the doctor could have raised the suspicion of the cops as she was not properly dressed.
