CareerLife As An Employee In Nigeria: A Never-ending Struggle by meanson(op): 3:44pm On Feb 11, 2025
Life as an Employee in Nigeria: A Never-Ending Struggle

Life as an employee in Nigeria often feels like a relentless battle. You’re overworked, underpaid, and expected to do the job of three people. Employers demand loyalty, yet how can you stay loyal when you’re sacrificing your time, health, and well-being to meet unrealistic expectations?
And what about the programmers and product designers working tirelessly to create solutions, only to be ignored?
Picture this: You’re manually sending emails to 90 people—one by one—because your company refuses to invest in a simple CRM tool. You’re waking up at 2 a.m. to meet deadlines because “deliverables” must be completed at all costs. Meanwhile, Nigerian programmers and product designers are developing tools—like Fastrasuite https://www.fastrasuite.com/—that automate tasks, reduce errors, and improve efficiency. But these innovations are dismissed. Employers claim they’re “too expensive” or fear change, preferring outdated methods that only increase inefficiency.
These developers are solving real problems, creating software to handle accounting, inventory, and tedious administrative tasks. Yet, instead of being embraced, their efforts are overlooked. Why do we continue to ignore the solutions we desperately need?
HR departments should bridge the gap between employees and employers, yet many prioritize their own job security over workplace improvements. They ignore burnout, excessive workloads, and toxic work environments. Why? Because they know there’s always someone unemployed, willing to take on the job of five people for half the salary. This fuels a vicious cycle where employees are treated as disposable, and innovation is continually stifled.
For many unemployed Nigerians, landing a job feels like a stroke of luck. But the reality? They are forced into multiple roles with long hours and minimal pay. They accept unreasonable workloads because they have no other option. Employers take advantage of this desperation, exploiting workers under the pretense that jobs are scarce. This doesn’t just harm employees—it also hurts businesses. Overworked employees make more mistakes, burn out quickly, and leave, perpetuating a never-ending cycle of inefficiency.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Imagine a workplace where technology is used to lighten the load—not add to it. Where employers invest in Nigerian-made tools that are affordable, efficient, and tailored to local needs. Where programmers and designers receive the recognition and support they deserve. Where HR focuses on improving employee well-being, rather than protecting outdated systems. Where employees are valued for their contributions—not treated as disposable labor.
This isn’t an impossible dream—it’s a necessary shift in mindset. Employers must move away from outdated methods and start investing in solutions that benefit everyone.
Nigeria has the talent and resources to do better. It’s time to stop settling for less and start demanding more—for the well-being of every worker and the future of every business.
