Business / Power Sector Fortunes Dwindle Amid High Expectations by Mediamerge: 9:52am On Sep 10, 2018
The operational and commercial performances of Nigeria’s power sector have continued to worry all stakeholders in the value chain. STANLEY OPARA examines the misfortunes of the industry and the need to address them for national good.

Inadequate gas supply, transmission bottlenecks and limited distribution networks are currently the major setbacks faced by the power sector, not leaving out the liquidity challenge in the electricity industry, with particular emphasis on the poor remittance by the power distribution companies (DisCos). The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, last week, in a multi-paged report, expressed worry over the bad state of the industry, and thus called on all stakeholders to salvage the situation given the strategic role the industry plays in the entire economy.

Business / To Distribute 20,000MW, Discos Need To Invest $4bn By 2021, — TCN by Mediamerge: 4:25pm On Sep 01, 2018
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that electricity distribution companies (Discos) would have to invest about $4 billion over the next three years to be able to match its ongoing expansion of the national grid to take up to 20,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated in the country, and also distribute same by 2021.

The TCN equally stated that it was appointed by the federal government to part-manage the N72 billion the government plans to invest in the upgrade of the distribution networks not just because of the need to get excess generated electricity to the distribution networks but also to protect its transmission facilities which it claimed were frequently burnt by alleged inefficiencies of the Discos.

Business / OIL & GAS Reasons Saudi Arabia Dominates Oil Market by Mediamerge: 5:25am On Aug 24, 2018
By Nick Cunningham

Saudi Arabia is still clearly in control of the oil market.

The narrative that decisively took hold over the oil market in August was one of cracks in emerging market demand, concerns over the health of the global economy and fears over the fallout from the U.S.-China trade war. Turkey’s currency crisis set off a slide in emerging market currencies, which will likely undercut demand this year. The IMF warned earlier this summer that the downside risks to the economy were growing, a rather prescient prediction. On the supply side of the equation, outages from Iran loom large.

Business / Give Us Schedule For PIGB Implementation, Stakeholders Tell FG by Mediamerge: 7:26am On Aug 22, 2018
Concerned stakeholders in the country’s petroleum industry have appealed to the Federal Government to spell out the timetable for the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) if it eventually becomes a law.
The bill is current with the Presidency, awaiting the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari.

A panel of energy experts who spoke at the Annual Conference organised by the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria, expressed the fear that unless the PIGB is insulated with a timeline stating its implementation deadline, its passage into law in an election year (2018) might suffer unnecessary delays if the incumbent Federal Government fails to get re-elected in 2019 to execute the law.

By Tsvetana Paraskova

Despite an expected slowdown in Permian growth rates, the U.S. shale patch is increasing production and will continue to do so this year and next.

Oil market investors and analysts are currently very much focused on the demand side, with concerns over the potential of trade wars to curb oil demand growth. On the supply side, analysts have shifted their focus onto losses from Iran, crumbling Venezuelan production, and whether OPEC and its allies will be able—and willing—to offset supply disruptions.

Business / LNG: China’s Biggest Weapon In The Trade War by Mediamerge: 10:43am On Aug 16, 2018
By Vanand Meliksetian

President Donald Trump’s first year in office must have been a pleasant surprise for Chinese President Xi Jinping. A successful state visit in Beijing and an apparent personal chemistry between the two leaders suggested a close relationship between the countries was brewing. But President Trump’s second year has turned that narrative on its head. The trade war between the two largest economies in the world has been intensifying of late, with both countries implementing a second round of tariffs on $16 billion worth of goods.
