Idjerhe Kingdom Egweya Protest herdsmen killings and Kingship fracas

The women and some indigenes of Idjerhe Kingdom have protested the incessant herdsmen attack on farmers and women in the kingdom. Three Clans, Oyunoburu, Jesse Town and Boboruku staged a protest today to call on the State government to intervene as killer herdsmen ransack the locals.

Muhammad Sanusi II, the deposed emir of Kano, has stepped out for the first time since arriving Awe town, Nasarawa state, on Tuesday.

Sanusi stepped out in the company of Nasir el-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna state, and the Emir of Awe.

He was driven to the palace of the emir of Awe, where he preached and led Jumaat prayers.

The deposed emir reiterated that nothing happens without the approval of God Almighty.

Pandemonium broke out on Thursday in the Olomore axis of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force allegedly shot two traders.

The SARS operatives were reported to have stormed Olomore Pepper Market while chasing an internet fraudster also known as Yahoo boy, who ran into the market.

Findings showed that stray bullets from the SARS officers’ gunshots hit two pepper sellers in the market during the chase.



An eye witness identified simply as Adamu told The PUNCH that one of the victims was shot in the head and the other was shot in the leg.

Adamu said the victims had been rushed to a nearby hospital.

There has been no confirmation that the victim shot in the head died as of the time of filing this report but the other victim it was gathered is being treated at the undisclosed hospital.


The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, had yet to reply a text message sent to his phone and several calls made to his phone were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal high Court, Abuja, has adjourned the application seeking the enforcement of fundamental rights filed by human rights activists, Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare, to March 25, 2020 for hearing.

The judge adjourned the matter after the regularisation of the processes by all parties involved in the case.

The activists had on November 15 and 20, 2019 filed separate suits marked

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, says he strongly believes coronavirus is caused by corruption.


Mr Magu said this at the passing out parade of 281 cadets of the EFCC Detective Inspector Course-5, at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, on Tuesday.

He said “Corruption is the biggest strategy to human kind. Your excellency, corruption is worse than all the diseases now running about.

“And I strongly believe, Your Excellency, that even the coronavirus is caused by corruption,” Mr Magu said.

Coronavirus, officially named COVID-19, broke out in Wuhan in Hubei province of China in December last year.

The disease has infected over 1716 medical workers in China alone and over 73,000 infected persons in 25 countries, causing not less than 1,875 deaths. Majority of the deaths are in Wuhan.

The exact cause of the disease has not been determined, neither has a cure been found.

Corruption deeply rooted

Mr Magu described the fight against corruption as a crusade against the evils in the society.


“Fighting corruption is thus a crusade against the evils of our society that are deeply rooted and threatening to consume us.

“We are aware of the task is not easy and the path can be very thorny and lonely, but with determination and a high sense of mission, we are making a progress towards rooting out this evil from our society

“As part of vigorous pursuit, the commission has created new specialised directorate and section taking into cognisance the changing phase of criminality,” he said.

“This directorate includes asset forfeiture and recovery management directorate, forensic and science laboratory directorate, anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism section.

“As at 2015, we had 103 convictions, in 2016,195 convictions, 314 in 2018, over 1218 convictions were secured in 2019,” he said.
