The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode
has ordered the closure of the popular Mile 12
Market and imposed curfew on four streets in
the area.
The governor’s order was as a result the
mayhem that engulfed the Mile 12 area on
Thursday. The governor said the police and other security
officials were managing the situation, adding
that some hoodlums had exploited a minor
clash to cause a breakdown of law and order in
the area.
Members of the Hausa and Yoruba community
in the area had clashed, leading to the burning
of houses and churches on Thursday.
Ambode, who spoke at the State House, Ikeja,
said the closure of the Mile 12 Market and the
curfew would help security agents to restore
peace.
He added that the curfew would only affect
four streets — Oniyanrin, Maidan, Agiliti 1 and
Agiliti 2.
He said, “In order to further restore peace to
the community, I have ordered that the Mile 12
Market be temporarily shut. I advise traders
and other stakeholders to eschew violence and
be law abiding. Furthermore, I have ordered
temporary restriction of movement in four
streets, namely Oniyanrin, Maidan, Agiliti 1 and
2.” “After the intervention of security agencies, the dispute appeared to have subsided. This type of clash does occur from time to time in a multi-ethnic city like Lagos. And the government has always responded appropriately. “The public is thereby assured that we will not shy away from our responsibilities to protect life and property in the state. Ee will deal decisively with those criminal elements involve in the clash. I have been assured by the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies at the scene that the situation has been brought under control. “I want to assure residents of Lagos State that the state is home to every ethnic group. No one should give this clash any ethnic colouration. Every law abiding citizens should go about their businesses.” The CP, Fatai Owoseni, said policemen had already been deployed in the area to enforce the order of the governor, adding that nobody died in the clash. “I was there personally; there was no record of death. There was no fire in the market, and as I speak to you, over 50 persons have been arrested. “But within agility community, houses were burnt by miscreants,” he added. The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said the N25bn Employment Trust Fund create successful businesses, jobs for Lagosians and strengthen the economy of the state. A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Habib Haruna, quoted him as saying this today while inaugurating the Board of the ETF, which is chaired by a former chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui- Okauru. According to the governor, the ETF is an instrument designed to galvanise the creative and innovative energies of all Lagosians and residents of the state. He called on Lagosians to seize the opportunity the fund presented, assuring them that the process of accessing the fund would be transparent, and that beneficiaries would be chosen only on the strength and quality of their applications. “Fellow Lagosians, this initiative has been designed to succeed. Our government will commit N6.25bn every year within the four years of this administration to a total of N25bn,” Ambode said. “Realising that the first year of this administration is just three months away, precisely on May 29, 2016, the Commissioner for Finance is hereby directed to transfer the sum of N6.25bn to the Employment Trust Fund immediately, today.” The governor urged the Chairman and members of the ETF Board to hit the ground running and ensure that the fund is operated based on global best practices. He said, “Every senatorial zone of the state must feel the positive impact of the Fund. The Board must ensure that the distribution of the fund is evenly spread across the state.” He called on corporate organisations, multilateral agencies, and individuals to support his administration in the quest to improve the fortunes of the youth. Omoigui-Okauru assured the governor and residents of the state the board would ensure that the ETF achieved the goal for which it was established. Other members of the ETF are Engr. Dele Martins, Mrs. Bilikis Adebiyi- Abiola, Mr. Otto Orondam, Mrs. Olufunmi Daudu, Mr. Tunde Bank- Anthony, Mr. Michael Ajayi, Mr. Tunde Durosinmi-Etti and Dr. Mustapha Akinkunmi. Mr. Akintunde Oyebode is the Executive Secretary of the Fund. Also, the governor inaugurated the Civil Service Commission, chaired by Mrs. Taiwo Oyemade, today, urging them to work transparently and with integrity. Adebayo Shittu, on Wednesday said that the Federal Government had concluded plans to meet with the MTN Group to resolve the dispute over the N1.04tn fine imposed on the telecommunications firm, which was later reduced to N780bn. Although the minister said that the meeting would hold “very soon,” reliable sources in the ministry told one of our correspondents that “the meeting will hold next week with the South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma, in attendance.” Zuma is billed to visit Nigeria next week for talks with President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter and other issues, according to details of an itinerary at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Despite last week’s payment of N50bn as part of the fine by MTN Nigeria in “good faith,” and withdrawal of a lawsuit it instituted against the Nigerian Communications Commission, Shittu said he could not say if the company would get any further reprieve from the government. He said only Buhari would make the final decision on any settlement over the penalty, adding, “It is within his power and jurisdiction to do that if he feels that it will be in the interests of Nigeria to so do. “It is now for the government to meet with them and conclude negotiations. The final decision rests solely with President Muhammadu Buhari.” MTN Nigeria declined commenting on the development. But officials at the MTN Group office in South Africa said on condition of anonymity that the telecoms company could head back to court if the government fail to reduce the N780bn fine. “The MTN Group is looking in the way of Ahmed Joda, the ex-Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Nigerian Communications Commission, to get the government to significantly reduce the fine. We may resume the lawsuit if no deal with the Nigerian government sails through,” one of the officials said. Shittu also said Nigeria was in advanced talks with an Indian firm to lay fibre optic cables from Kogi State to the Federal Capital Territory, but declined to name the firm. He said he would also travel to China and South Korea within two weeks in a bid to encourage foreign firms to invest in broadband services in the country. The minister also denied an allegation that the government side-lined the Nigerian Communications Commission in negotiations with MTN on the fine. In a statement made available to one of our correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare, said the government could not have side-lined the NCC on the matter. Oluwadamilare said, “To all intents and purposes, there is no controversy whatsoever about the expected role of ministries over their agencies and parastatals, and the Ministry of Communications could not have been an exception. “Thus, it is a common knowledge that the Ministry of Communications statutorily has supervisory role over its agencies, including the Nigeria Communications Commission. It is against this backdrop that it is strange and curious that a section of the Nigerian media has decided to deliberately misinform the reading public about the correct position of things. “It is evidently untrue that Nigerian government side-lined its own regulator, the NCC, by striking a secret deal with MTN. In whose interest will this be?” SOURCE: http://stormng.ml/2016/03/03/zuma-to-meet-buhari-over-mtn-fine/
