The students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria have emerged the gold medalists of the 7thNigeria Universities Computer Programming Contest (NUCPC) in Abuja. The annual competition which is organized by National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has in attendance 16 teams from public and private universities in Nigeria. Federal University of Technology Akure emerged 2nd while Ebonyi State University clinched the bronze in 3rd position. Speaking at the event at the weekend, the coordinator of Computer Science Programme at NMC, Dr Jennifer Bamidele said the competition is to sharpen the students programming skills and improve their knowledge in science and technology. While noting that this year’s edition was more interesting due to introduction of some presentations before and in between contest, she urged the winners to go back and work hard to retain the trophy next year. The CEO of NMC, Prof Stephen Onah represented by Prof Fumilayo Saporu said the programme was to catch them young and expose them to areas that are similar in competitive manner. He said they should apply the knowledge gathered when they go back to their various universities. Speaking on behalf of ABU team, Nuhu Ibrahim a 400level student of computer science expressed joy as the national champions, adding that they were able to recognize their self-strength and for everyone they assigned task where they are better and it really work out. Two aides of President Muhammadu Buhari last night said the ailing Nigerian leader might head home within a week, subject to clearance by his doctors. In an interview on the condition of anonymity, one of the two sources also claimed that some of the president’s latest health symptoms revealed in our recent reports arose as adverse reactions to drugs prescribed for Mr. Buhari since he arrived in the UK. The Oyo State Police Command on Friday paraded a 55-year-old pastor for alleged unlawful possession of a human head, buffalo horn as well as gun powder and charms.The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the police also paraded 18 suspects arrested for alleged armed robbery, stealing and cultism.The Commissioner of Police, AbiodunOdude, told journalists in Ibadan thatthe pastor, said to be the founder of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Idapomimo Zion, Alagbado, Lagos, was arrested by operatives of the Federal Highway Patrol during a “stop and search’’ operation.Mr. Odude said that the pastor was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. on May 4 on his way to another branch of thechurch at Imini in Afijo Local Government Area of Oyo State.The suspect, on his part, told journalists that he got the human head during a demolition exercise in Alagbado, Lagos.Mr. Isaiah, who claimed to be the sonof a herbalist, said that he was takingthe human head to the branch of the church at Imini to offer sacrifice in order to chase away thieves terrorising the area.He, however, said that such an attitude was not expected from a pastor. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/230474-pastor-caught-human-head-confesses.html |
Federal Government on Monday in Abuja assured the Nigeria workers of speedy passage of the new National Minimum Wage.President Muhammadu Buhari said this in a message to workers on the occasion marking the 2017 May Day Rally with the theme, “Labour Relations in Economic Recession: An Appraisal”.“I am happy to inform you that Government will give expeditious consideration to the proposal contained in the Technical Committee’s Report which was submitted to it on April 6, 2017.“Government will take necessary steps to implement the final recommendation of the Main Government/Labour Committee as it relates to the setting up the new National Minimum Wage Committee and the needed palliatives.“This is in order to reduce the discomfort currently being experienced by the Nigerian working class.“I want to assure you that government will continue to do all at its disposal to better the lots of all Nigerians and more importantly to provide a commensurate welfare for all Nigerian workers, ”he said.He said that he was aware that the economic recession in the country has huge implication for the seamless conduct of industrial relations.He noted that this arises from the fact that the economic recession by its nature was characterised by a substantial risk of the “vicious circles of low- productivity.He said others are mass retrenchment of workers and closure of workplaces due to high cost of doing business, unregulated subcontracting and outsourcing with its consequences on welfare of workers among others.According to him, in the face of these inevitable challenges, you have shown maturity and understanding in spite of the situation in which we found ourselves.“I strongly salute your great sense of patriotism and loyalty to the country, ”he said.President Buhari however, called for effective deployment of labour relations, an amalgamated approach that would be used in creating a conducive work environment that would attract foreign investment for wealth creation.He called on government, workers and employers to work together to put out the economy from the recession.“Therefore, I called on the organised labour to continue to partner with this administration by resorting to social dialogue as an indispensable tool for conflict resolution“Today, we stand in solitary with workers all over the world to commemorate this historic Day which marked a turning point in the economies of the nations and the welfare of the working class, ”he added.He commended the organised labour for their support and encouragement to the administration’s fight against corruption which was the bane of sustainable economic development.He added that, “my commitment to fight against corruption is total and irreversible. Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu has sacked6,000 council workers believed to have joined the Abia State Civil Service either with fake WAEC results or on falsified ages.The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs, Chief Charles Ogbonnaya said at the weekend that the affected council workers were discovered during verification of workers tohave given false information to their local governments.
