Mankind2024: From Lockdown Despair to US Stock Success: How the COVID-19 Crisis Sparked My Journey to a $200K+ Portfolio
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria's nationwide lockdown marked one of the most turbulent periods in the country's history. The future felt uncertain, and tomorrow seemed bleak.
This challenging time coincided with a severe market meltdown. The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) was deep in the red, portfolios were bleeding value, and the federal government introduced "Ways and Means" financing—essentially printing money and borrowing without asset backing.
These events pushed me to diversify beyond local markets and explore opportunities abroad.
One fateful day in 2020, while browsing the "US Stocks Pick Alert" thread on Nairaland, I discovered a foreign broker that allowed qualified Nigerians to register. I signed up successfully, though at the time, I had little idea which stocks suited me best. Day trading and chasing "hot stocks" dominated the scene.
In the beginning, it was mistake after mistake: dabbling in penny stocks, battling emotional volatility, and falling prey to greed.
Then, in 2023, I paused for reflection and committed to staying within my circle of competence. I began studying the "Magnificent 7" stocks and their profound impact on the global economy. I started carefully selecting investments in the dynamic US market.
Today, those efforts are paying off handsomely in US dollar terms. As of the close of business yesterday, my portfolio—started as a seed for my three beautiful children—stands at $203,424, with unrealized gains of $61,463.
May God continue to bless us all in the new year and beyond. |

But you need a base load which can only be sourced from Nuclear, gas, coal or hydro And fussion for when it becomes available Every country or region will be different I don’t see a lot of nuclear plant in Africa. Our main source of electricity will mostly be from fossil fuels or hydro in the foreseeable future ositadima1: I think it’s more about making the most of the years we have left. I’ve said it before, petrol as the sole fuel for cars, trucks, and buses is gradually being phased out. Many countries have already set dates to ban fossil fuel–powered vehicles, some within the next 20 to 30 years, and even earlier in a few cases. Do you know that Ethiopia has already banned the importation of fuel-powered buses because of its new large-capacity hydro power plant?
Refining profit margins will take a hit in the coming years; plastics and other by-products will likely become the main revenue drivers. Just my opinion, though. I’ll remind you in the next 10 to 20 years, maybe in this thread, maybe somewhere else. Just take care of yourself till then. |

That is correct! ✅ mikeapollo: Let's remember that lower inflation figures does not mean that prices are reducing or dropping in the market. It only means that even though prices are increasing, the rate of increment is lower compared to prior year i.e. prices are increasing at a decreasing rate. |

Interesting information - I am surprise to see Real estate as a top contributor
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in nominal terms rose to N94.05 trillion in Q1 2025, representing an 18.30% year-on-year growth from N79.51 trillion in Q1 2024. However, on a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP declined by 9.97% from N104.47 trillion recorded in Q4 2024, tracking seasonal economic moderation and tighter monetary conditions. In nominal terms, Real Estate emerged as the largest contributor in Q1 2025, followed by Trade, Crop Production, and Telecommunications. Despite nominal inflation pressures and currency depreciation, key sectors such as Real Estate, Trade, Crop Production, and Telecommunications emerged as the largest contributors to GDP. Combined, the top ten sectors accounted for 75.17% of the economy. |

Kind of make sense😀 chimex38: There is an improvement anyway. The idea is that the market will react to the % improvement which I believe he just translated to an equivalent "apparent EPS"; Not necessarily the face value of Eps.
The formula isnt complex. Its still simplified. Afterall, the stock price wasn't Zero or -ve when the face value of EPS was -ve; was it? |

Nice yMcy56: Just seeing this. It's obvious you've not been following some of my posts on FBNH. - Since the days of N3, I've been on FBNH's case here..... - When Otedola stepped in at around N6/N6+, I was here encouraging interested persons to buy.......he was the one that moved it to 2 digits..... - Immediately he showed renewed interest to increase his stakes recently, some of the few people I told to buy are here......, when it pulled back to 16, and recently @25/26... - And so on and so forth...... - I couldn't have made posts against FBNH when recent developments are progresses on top the above points..... * I'm Pro FBNH, I'm pro Otedola.....seems my earlier post was wrongly interpreted.😊

I get it, i understand what you are saying but we have discussed this many times on this forum, buying and selling stocks transcends FA and TA especially on NGX. Sometimes its just about momentum. A wise investor will take advantage of market conditions. Get in, get out, put your money in long term solid stocks. Its a skill everyone in the market must cultivate. Now to answer your question, if tomorrow happens we will sell (because we already take profit or in profit) and move on. I guess when we get to the bridge.............. I must we need people like you on this forum. The voice of caution! Thanks HesInMe: First Bank is now one man's personal owanbe. Do you have a paid subscription for tradingview? emmaodet: Likely to see a pull back for ellahlakes at this 4.8 price. Possible to take some profits. It is an area of constant resistance. It faced a resistance at this price in sept-24 and Oct-24 This is the third time testing this area but with the volume been observed, we will see if this line of resistance obey the law of polarity where price breaks above and it becomes a support. |

Can you explain how you came about this figure? Teach me ositadima1: Let me explain why stocks like Oando, Dangote Sugar, and others that are structurally underwater (price & technicals) will find it difficult to move upward.
First, the concept of being "underwater" refers to the structural position of the current price relative to where significant trading activity occurred within a given time period. Simply put, many traders who bought at higher prices are now waiting to break even—and they create resistance. When the price reaches their breakeven point, they tend to offload their positions, creating selling pressure.
The only logical way for such stocks to move higher is through a strong catalyst—exceptionally good news that can propel the price beyond this overhead resistance. Some of these stocks have over 80 billion naira worth of volume sitting silently above current levels (more money sitting above than below price over a given period). Breaking through that kind of supply will be tough and take considerable time.
That said, this is my latest interpretation, which contradicts one of my earlier views where I said, "Never buy above the big money." In light of this new understanding, that statement was wrong.
Now, my updated stance is this: buy below the big money only if you see a Level 8 catalyst—something strong enough to drive the price up. Otherwise, it’s best to stay on the sidelines for now. |
