Literature / Zero Alpha: My Journey In Search Of Peace (an Excerpt) by Memecasper(m): 8:14pm On May 22, 2015
It’s almost two weeks now, Yeah, two weeks since I ran away. Ran away, I said not desert. I ran for my dear life. I had left the warfront, the warzone, war state and probably the military as a whole. I am not a coward, I just grew wiser. Wise enough to realize I had to opt out before my blood was spilled in a cause I know nothing of. If I had to die today, my family would be less grieved; at least I had not died from a bullet wound or an explosion or being slaughtered by those animals. They would know I died by a natural cause and they would not have to receive any blood money for my departure. How on earth are they going to spend that anyway? I became wise to realize being a soldier in a country like ours was just like being a helpless lamb, sacrificed for no reason.

We had won the war or should I say completed the task given to us but the authority didn’t see any casualty so they weren’t satisfied. They wanted to go back. For the love of God, why are they being so callous! I dropped my kits and submitted my rifle with the excuse of going to solve some administrative problems and bowed out without anyone knowing my plan. I was in alone and just in case I got caught, I wanted face the judgment alone, their court martial as usual. It took me almost a week to finally arrive at my father’s house, where it felt like home and to be sane again. In the first seven days after the war, I couldn’t sleep. I had blood on my hands and each time I tried closing my eyes, I had nightmares about the people I had killed. I saw dead innocent children sprawled about like rats. And then the most terrifying image of all; the man I had killed, the man I had shot between his eyes. He had looked at me for a few seconds and the eyes were cold and scared. One thing I knew was, those eyes would haunt me forever. I tried to watch movies all day and night to exorcise my mind from the evil I was going through, it helped a little.

I had long chats with my girlfriend. That helped too, then I could at least get an hour of sleep dreaming about her before the break of dawn then I had to get up to observe my prayers. I became closer to God not that I wasn’t before but the whole military, hindered some things, and those things I was ready to pay back. Dad made sure I was fine and didn’t lack anything. He bought fruits and drug supplement to get me back hale and hearty. Mum never stopped calling every minute, to bury my sorrow with her stories about the weather, her job, and her experience in the United States. She was miles away and I missed that. I had spoken to little sister just once but she would be home by the end of the month, for her mid-term break, I can’t wait. And my bro? We chat like shit; we talk over the phone sometimes too. He is basically my new best friend.
Being a soldier in this country is so degrading and we are treated like crap or should I say they are treated like crap because I’m not sure I’m going back until everything changes for good. It pains me so much that my heart bleeds when I lose a colleague. People lose their lives because of the incompetency of the government on this issue. This is a terrorist-war o.k. insurgency not an inter-country war. These guys are inside your country for goodness sake. In a country of more than 190 million people, then few pieces of crap not up to half a million have been threatening your lives for more than 5 years. I am sorry to say we don’t deserve to have a military or even be called a country. Those bastards have killed more than five thousand soldiers and we can’t still wipe out their existence? There must be something wrong. If it isn’t the authority funding and supporting these terrorists, I don’t see why we can’t curb them.

I thought this book was going to have a happy ending but I doubt it because the last chapter before this was meant to be the last and I have decided not to open it again and let those lies they tell the world as stories on TV and in the papers about the warfront just filter through. I didn’t want to hear them talk again because this was becoming a puppet show and those guys up there are the string pullers, and the soldiers, the puppets.

At about about 1616 hours today, I got a call from a friend, a soldier who thinks he could go on fighting the war. He told me a soldier and an officer are dead and one other soldier severely injured. An officer, Flying officer Toryem of the Nigerian Air force and Seaman Amaseimogha Alexander of the Nigerian Navy were both dead. Both of them served diligently during their life time. Alexander especially had a close relationship with me. Apart from being roommates at the FOB, Abuja for almost 4 months, he was skating friend and teacher. He taught me how to skate back then in Belarus during our training as Special Forces. He helped me buy my first pair of skating shoes. He was an intelligent chap who showed lovely view about religion and politics. And the officer, Toryem, he was a young chap, a fine officer. We were both under the Nigerian Air force before his demise. The injured soldier, Private Khalid, I can’t believe it though. He use to be my close pal during those few weeks of advance. We were both on the engineering team and because of our age bracket; we did things together and talked about after war. I heard he got a 12.8mm bullet to his chest, damn that stuff is meant for felling trees not humans. I hope he gets better anyway.

For those who lost their lives, I hope it wouldn’t be in vain. We keep shouting ‘May 29th, Buhari would take over’ but I ask myself ‘how many more brothers would I lose?’ How many more have to die for the lost cause. I bade you adieu Alexander and Fg Offr Toryem. I hope you have found peace. May God grant you mercy. In heaven hold the gates firm during your sentry duties for we are coming to relieve you.

Humans have been tangling tongues for as long as they've walked the earth. Here are some amazing facts about kissing that you probably didn't know!

1. The Word Kiss Is Based on a Sound

The word kiss is said to be derived from the Germanic word kuss, which imitates the smacking sound of two lips meeting. In other circles, kiss is said to be derived from the old English word cyssan. In Japanese the word for kiss is also a sound (kisu), but the French refer to a kiss as "baiser."

2. Not Everybody Likes to Lock Lips

Some cultures simply don't kiss! In most cultures kissing does not have a practical purpose. Kissing in public is deemed taboo in many Asian cultures, and French kissing was originally a slur on the French -- people thought they thought about sex too much!

When you lock lips, the brain lights up like a city block, releasing a flood of chemicals throughout the body. This heavy duty hormone cocktail that triggers affection and cements attraction. In men, this encourages testosterone to build up to promote feelings of protectiveness. In women, the chemical compound encourages bonding.

4. Kissing is Addicting

That's because a compound in human saliva that serves to create a feeling of addiction. You basically get hooked on the taste of the other person's spit. It's an evolutionary tactic designed to help us check partners out before hooking up, because saliva hosts a ton of minute clues about immunity, genes and compatibility.

5. Your Brain Likes Kissing New People

That lovely hormone that gets you addicted floods your system whenever you kiss a new partner, making you love-drunk, miss sleep and generally fall in love. But the dopamine gradually wears off, which is why kissing the same person can quickly get old.

6. Kissing is Healthy

Kissing boosts the immune system because you share germs. In a healthy situation, your body reacts to the kissing by attacking the other's person's saliva, increasing your immunity. Not only that, all the other stuff that goes with kissing (pre-intimacy, groping, heavy petting) lowers your blood pressure and releases stress!

7. The Kiss of Death is Real!

Ever kissed someone and felt nothing? That's because your body is telling you that person isn't a suitable mate. A lot of us still operate on instinct when it comes to finding that significant other. Kissing is one way to rule unsuitable potential partners out. So the next time you lock lips and don't feel a thing, listen to your body and walk away.

8. Kissing Makes Relationships Last

45% of people in long term relationships report higher levels of satisfaction if they just keep making out. More kissing, researches fond, also tended to lead to more sex. This is because some researchers believe that open-mouth kissing functions as prep for sex. Psychologists believe it's because passionate kissing continually renews the bond between partners.

9. Bad Kissers Don't Get Laid

Women place more importance on kissing than any other romantic skill. If you kiss like a sloppy baboon, chances are she won't let you in her bed. Men, on the other hand, are ambivalent about kissing skills and prefer sloppy kissers, since this indicates a willingness to have sex.

10. Kissing Takes Effort

During a kiss, you move at least 34 facial muscles! It also involves at least 112 other muscles that include the neck, shoulders and arms. The kissing muscle moves the lips into a puckered shape, and it said to be the most important

Travel / 10 Facts About The Titanic That You Don't Know by Memecasper(m): 9:56am On Mar 20, 2015
You may already know that the Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on the night of April 14, 1912 and sunk just over two-and-a-half hours later, but do you know the following ten facts about the Titanic?

1. Cancelled Lifeboat Drill
Originally, a lifeboat drill was scheduled to take place on board the Titanic on April 14, 1912 - the day the Titanic hit the iceberg. However, for an unknown reason, Captain Smith canceled the drill. Many believe that had the drill taken place, more lives could have been saved.

2. Only Seconds
From the time the lookouts sounded the alert, the officers on the bridge had only 37 seconds to react before the Titanic hit the iceberg. In that time, First Officer Murdoch ordered "hard a-starboard" (which turned the ship to port -- left). He also ordered the engine room to put the engines in reverse. The Titanic did bank left, but it wasn't quite enough.

3. The Titanic's Newspaper
The Titanic seemed to have everything on board, including its own newspaper. The Atlantic Daily Bulletin was printed every day on board the Titanic. The newspaper included news, advertisements, stock prices, horse-racing results, society gossip, and the day's menu.

4. Lifeboats Not Full
Not only were there not enough lifeboats to save everyone on board, most of the lifeboats that were launched off the Titanic were not filled to capacity. For instance, the first lifeboat to launch, Lifeboat 7 from the starboard side, only carried 24 people, despite having a capacity of 65 (two additional people later transferred to Lifeboat 7 from Lifeboat 5). However, it was Lifeboat 1 that carried the fewest people - only seven crew and five passengers (a total of 12 people) despite having a capacity for 40.

5. Only Two Bathtubs
Although most passengers had to share bathrooms (only the two promenade suites in first class had private bathrooms), third class had it rough with only two bathtubs for more than 700 passengers.

6. Another Boat Was Closer for Rescue
When the Titanic began sending out distress signals, the Californian, rather than the Carpathia, was the closest ship; yet the Californian did not respond until it was much too late to help. At 12:45 a.m. on April 15, 1912, crew members on the Californian saw mysterious lights in the sky (the distress flares sent up from the Titanic) and woke up their captain to tell him about it. Unfortunately, the captain issued no orders. Since the ship's wireless operator had already gone to bed, the Californian was unaware of any distress signals from the Titanic until the morning, but by then the Carpathia had already picked up all the survivors. Many people believe that if the Californian had responded to the Titanic's pleas for help, many more lives could have been saved.

7. Two Dogs Rescued
With the order for women and children first into the lifeboats, plus the knowledge that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board the Titanic to be saved, it is a bit surprising that two dogs made it into the lifeboats. Of the nine dogs on board the Titanic, the two that were rescued were a Pomeranian and a Pekinese.

8. The Fourth Funnel
In what is now an iconic image, the side view of the Titanic clearly shows four cream and black funnels. While three of these released the steam from the boilers, the fourth was just for show. The designers thought the ship would look more impressive with four funnels rather than three.

9. A Royal Mail Ship
The R.M.S. Titanic was a Royal Mail Ship, a designation which meant the Titanic was officially responsible for delivering mail for the British postal service. On board the Titanic was a Sea Post Office with five mail clerks (two British and three American). These mail clerks were responsible for the 3,423 sacks of mail (seven million individual pieces of mail) on board the Titanic. Interestingly, although no mail has yet been recovered from the wreck of the Titanic, if it were, the U.S. Postal Service would still try to deliver it (the USPS because most of the mail was being sent to the U.S.).

10. Corpses Recovered
On April 17, 1912, the day before survivors of the Titanic disaster reached New York, the Mackay-Bennett was sent off from Halifax, Nova Scotia to search for bodies. On board the Mackay-Bennett were embalming supplies, 40 embalmers, tons of ice, and 100 coffins. Although the Mackay-Bennett found 306 bodies, 116 of these were too badly damaged to take all the way back to shore. Attempts were made to identify each body found. Additional ships were also sent out to look for bodies. In all, 328 bodies were found, but 119 of these were badly damaged and thus were buried at sea.
Health / 'ebola-proof' Tablet Device Developed by Memecasper(m): 9:25am On Mar 20, 2015
A tablet device that can withstand being doused in chlorine has been developed to help doctors caring for patients with Ebola.
Designed by technology volunteers and Google, it can be used even wearing gloves and in storms and high humidity.
Medecins Sans Frontieres put out a call for an Ebola-proof tablet to help teams record vital patient information.
At the height of the current outbreak, medics were shouting patient notes across fences to avoid contamination.
High-risk zones
Ebola is passed on through close contact with infected bodily fluids.
Even a single piece of paper leaving a high-risk zone poses a risk of passing on the infection, the charity says.
And medics caring for these patients have to be encased in full protective suits with goggles and multiple layers of gloves, despite the soaring temperatures.
But dictating notes across a fence at the end of exhausting shifts while wearing masks was a "recipe for error", MSF said.
To overcome these challenges the group of international tech volunteers came together, including Pim de Witte of Whitespell and Daniel Cunningham at Hack4Good. They were later joined by Google.

The tablet has waterproof casing at an "industrial level" according to Ivan Gayton, technology advisor at MSF.
It can be dunked in 0.5% chlorine solution which kills Ebola - if used on unprotected hands this strength of chlorine could cause chemical burns.
Sharp edges of the tablet were removed so that protective clothing would not be pierced.
And it is charged quickly and wirelessly by being placed on a table. The tablet connects wirelessly to a tiny local network server that is roughly the size of a postage stamp.
Health workers use it to track a patient's progress - comparing pulse, temperature and other results over time.
Mr Gayton said: "Although we have just treated the largest cohort of Ebola patients in human history, we still know distressingly little about the progression of the disease.
"In the longer term if we are able to collect more and better information about our patients, we will also learn more about the disease and how best to treat it."
Difficult scenarios
The device has been tested at MSF treatment centres in Sierra Leone.
The charity hopes the technology - which is open-source - will be adapted for use in other difficult scenarios such as outbreaks of cholera.
Dr Eric Perakslis, from Harvard Medical School, works on separate global health innovation projects. He said: "A handful of companies are trying to find a technological solutions for the Ebola crisis.
"But they face a lot of challenges such as unreliable electricity. This one addresses all the challenges at once.
"And it will not just be useful for single patient encounters but for research on the virus too."
Ganesh Shankar, product manager at Google, said: "I think this kind of partnership represents the future of how non-governmental organisations are going to integrate technology into the work they do."

50calibre:
This is not a contest, it's a clownfest, the largest collection of clowns on NL. Look at this clown

He this he's got swag, Hahaha look at his hat, are you guys sure he isn't a relative of GEJ?

Besides, What's up with niggas pulling feminine faces in pics like a sissy, is this a trend or what? Keep a straight face or pull something masculine.

I can't stand effeminate guys who try too hard, look at this nigga for example

https://www.nairaland.com/naijaboiy

Wtf is wrong with his face, did he recently suffer a stroke.. Hahaha bunch of sissies.

I can only identify two of the coolest & freshest niggas on that list, (see below) the rest are bunch of clowns
