• Financial Loss: Nigeria incurred massive daily demurrage fees (compensation paid to ship owners for delays), reportedly costing around $1 million per day and totaling hundreds of millions of dollars. Much of the cement hardened and spoiled on the ships or at the docks.
• Political Impact: The severe economic mismanagement, inflation, and chaos surrounding the scandal contributed to the weakening of Gowon's government, leading to his overthrow in a bloodless coup on July 29, 1975, led by General Murtala Mohammed.
