The Lagos state police command has released a statement warning the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to desist from conducting their planned protest. Read the statement below... The Lagos State Police Command hereby advises the Ikeja branch of the Nigeria Bar Association led by Mr. Adesina Ogunlana to shelve their planned protest slated for tomorrow 20th February 2018 as all avenues to resolving their grievances have not been exploited. The CP is deeply worried about the security implication of such protest at this time when the resources of the Police command is overstretched. Thus, it is expected that the NBA chairman whose office is a shouting distance away from the CP's office, should have at least briefed him on the matter and indeed any issue of interest to his association instead of planning a street protest for a matter that could be resolved in the CP's office without much ado. Moreso the unit of the Police which the NBA has issues with and indeed all operational Police units in the state are under the command of the Commissioner of Police. The Lagos State Police Command, views this planned protest and the call by the NBA Chairman that all manner of people should join the protest as a call to breach of public peace and safety and an unnecessary dissipation of valuable energy. Besides these, the Command wishes to draw the attention of the organizers of the protest that intelligence report at its disposal indicates that certain elements are hell bent on truncating the peace in Lagos State and are merely waiting for triggers such as the planned protest by the NBA to execute their intentions. The Command would like to inform the NBA Chairman that as a stakeholder in peace affairs , security and public orderliness in the state, he ought to partner the police in ensuring public safety and not resort to acts capable of breaching the peace enjoyed by all in the state. The CP wishes to assure the NBA Chairman that his complaint as seen in the newspapers is noted and that investigation into it is in progress and at the end, a joint press conference in which the NBA Chairman would be invited would be held. National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, yesterday said that former president Olusegun Obasanjo was playing politics with the concerns he raised about the state of the nation in his letter sent to presidnet Buhari last week. Tinubu said this when he spoke to newsmen after a meeting with Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha. “Obasanjo wrote it about the government. It is a very good awareness on his part and they are both from the same background. I believe that is the doctrine of Military Officers (retired) because he has unrestricted access to the President, either through the Council of State or by any other means that he need to see the current President privately and he was his junior in the Army. So I think Obasanjo was playing politics with his public letter that’s all I see. He could have used other means, he met him in the AU too he has a way of discussing privately but the letter is being responded to by the government”he said On the launch of Obasanjo’s Coalition Movement, Tinubu said that it is too early for him to comment on the development. ''The appropriate time is not now for response on the Coalition Movement but we are in a democracy, we are in a country that is a signatory to the Charter of the United Nation which guarantees free movement, free association and free speech”he said http://www.metronaija.ng/obasanjo-playing-politics-letter-president-buhari-bola-tinubu/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday said it would not participate in the State Local Government Council election scheduled to hold on March 3. The party cited a case it instituted to challenge the amendment made to the Electoral law by the Edo State House of Assembly. State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, made the position of the party known at Igarra and Auchi, headquarters of Akoko Edo and Etsako West Government Areas respectively, during the Flag off the PDP’s Meet-the-people Tour, to the 18 local government areas. He said the party has approached the court to challenge the process on the electoral law as amended by the EDHA, adding that the PDP was compelled to approach the court as EDSIEC did not comply with the relevant Section of the Constitution on electoral matters. While also condemning the membership composition of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Orbih alleged that a team of registered members of certain political parties made up the electoral body. He also alleged that the Prof Stanley Orobator-led EDSIEC has concluded plans to announce the local government election results even before the March 3 date of its conduct. Orbih noted that until the Edo State government decides to comply with the relevant provision of the Nigerian Constitution, the PDP will not participate in what he described as “illegal process” to conduct Council election. He said, “What we have in place in Edo State is that the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission is not dependable, reliable and not competent to conduct any election in Edo State.” Orbih while lamenting the incessant attacks and killings of Akoko Edo indigenes by rampaging herdsmen, urged the people to keep faith with the PDP, by encouraging and mobilizing its members and supporters to get registered in the INEC’s ongoing continuous voter registration exercise, to enable them vote and bring about positive change. He sympathised with families and victims of herdsmen attacks in Akoko Edo, saying that the State government has failed the people in the area of security. Also speaking, a former governorship candidate in the State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, called on all members of the party who are interested in contesting positions in the local government election to be patient and wait for the outcome of the court process instituted by the PDP to challenge the conduct of the council polls. Ize-Iyamu who sued for peace and reconciliation among members to form a stronger and united front, said the call for patience by aspirants became imperative as the party will be better for it in future election. He also expressed optimism for a positive outcome of the court case instituted to challenge the conduct of the State local government election. “In 2019, everything will change for the better. As you reconcile, please reorganise and rededicate yourselves. We see there is hunger in the land. In our time as the ruling party, we were not hearing of herdsmen killing, raping of your daughters and women as well as destroying your crops and farmlands. We will be victorious and by the grace of God, stop the killings,” Ize-Iyamu said. http://www.metronaija.ng/pdp-pulls-edo-lg-elections/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
