Politics / Oshiomhole’s Former Aide Defects To PDP With Supporters by metronaija4: 7:37am On Sep 24, 2018
Mr Kassim Afegbua, former Special Adviser on Media to the immediate past Governor of Edo and APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has defected with thousands of his supporters to the PDP.

Afegbua, who was also Commissioner for Information in Edo, was received by the party’s Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, at Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

The former aide to Oshiomhole said he took the “bold step” in rejoining his former party, because of infrastructural deficit in his community.

He said that though he served under the APC- led administration in the state for 8 years, he felt dissatisfied, because of the state of roads and lack of development in Okpella community..

Afegbua also lamented the absence of electricity in the community and complained of high inflation and rising costs of commodities across the local markets.

He said the APC members were defecting to the PDP on account of poor roads and neglect of the community by the state government.

He said that the PDP was sympathetic with flood victims in the locality and blamed the state government for what he termed “slow response” to the problem.

Afegbua said the PDP was aware of donation of relief materials by some Federal Government agencies and appealed against diversion of the items.

The spokesman of other defectors, Chief Ekpen Abu, pledged their readiness to work with the party to win the next election in the area and the state in general.

Politics / APC Inaugurates Screening And Appeals Committee by metronaija4: 7:32am On Sep 21, 2018
Mr Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), has inaugurated a high-level legislative screening and appeals committee for the party’s 386 Senate, and 1,587 House of representatives aspirants.

Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, former Edo governor, Mr Timipre Sylva, Ahmad Sani Yerima, Ken Nnamani, Sharon Ikeazor, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, and Sen. Olorunnimbe Mamora are among heads of the committees which were inaugurated on Thursday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 15 APC State Governors seeking re-election in 2019 were drilled by the APC Screening committee ahead of its party primaries.

The governors, who were screened at the campaign office of the APC national chairman included governors of Imo, Zamfara, Oyo, Borno and Nasarawa states.
The above governors were screened for senate position, while second term governors seeking re-election were also screened
Governors seeking re-election included: Kaduna state, Nasir EL-Rufai, governors of Niger, Kebbi, Jigawa, Kano, Adamawa, Plateau, Lagos and , Bauchi states.
Speaking to newsmen separately after appearing before the screening committee, all the governors noted that the screening was more or less a formality.
They expressed confidence that they had no reason to entertain fear over their re-election.
Bauchi State Governor, Muhammed Abubakar, told newsmen that the defection of the Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, would not affect the fortune of the party in the state or his re-election bid.
He added that the Speaker represented a constituency that had a total of 70, 000 registered voters, saying that he won election with a margin of 393,000 in 2015.
The governor, however, said that Bauchi state had adopted the indirect primaries to choose the party’s candidates for all elective offices in 2019 general elections.
“The position of the State Executive in Bauchi which they took while I was away in China with President Muhamnadu Buhari was for indirect primary.
“The Constitution of the party provides for indirect. The last NEC meeting allows for the State Executive Committee to take charge and determine for themselves what type of primary they want to adopt and Bauchi chose indirect,” he said.
Speaking on the recent gale of defection after going through the screening, Gov. Umar Ganduje of Kano said the state chapter of the party gained more members than those that left.
He described those that left the party as nomadic politicians.
He added that the exit of former Kano State Governor and Senator representing Kano central, Rabiu Kwankwaso from the party had been naturalised with the entry of another former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shakarau to the party.
He added that his experience with the screening committee was the easiest because he had no challenger.
“The screening went on successfully. My own took less than three minutes then I bowed and left because I have no challenger in APC governorship primary in Kano state,” he said.
The governor of Oyo, Abiola Ajimobi, however, said that he had no anointed aspirant as all the contestants weree qualified and capable of governing the state.
“The screening is a normal process and it is just to access your eligibility as well as ability to win, and I think that has been done.
He said that Oyo state had also adopted the indirect primary to choose the party’s candidates for all elective offices for 2019 general elections.
“We have so many people who are eminently qualified aspirants and for me, I have given them free hands, let them talk to all party members. And whoever they want among them, I am okay,” he said.
In his own reaction, Niger State Governor, Sani Bello, said that the party’s stakeholders had met and decided to settle for the direct primary in the state.
Bello, who was also seeking re-election, told newsmen after his screening that all APC stakeholders in his state were on the same page as regard the mode of primary election.
Asked on the strategies he is putting in place to ensure APC’ victory at the general elections in Niger, the governor said: “With the adoption of the direct primary the party is becoming more popular.
“We will try as much as possible to uphold fairness and justice in the party, and give everyone equal opportunity to vie for any position they want.
“We will ensure that by God’s grace we have outstanding victory in 2019,” he said.
Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara while supporting the use of indirect method of primary in states, said his colleagues, who had opted for the mode, were mostly on ground and would easily adapt to any of the options for primary election.

Politics / Birth, Death Certificates Free Says NPC Chairman by metronaija4: 4:31pm On Sep 19, 2018
The National Population Commission (NPopC) says registration for birth and death certificates are offered free by the commission.

The Chairman of NPopC, Chief Eze Duruiheoma, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.
Duruiheoma was reacting to allegations by some Nigerians that they were being charged various sums from N2,000 upwards at the different registration points established by the commission across the country.
“The commission does not charge for issuance of birth or death certificates, but rather the private organisations engaged for the job,’’ he explained.
According to him, the certificate is free for children from 0-days to 17 years of birth, after which a N2,000 penalty is imposed on defaulters who must also produce an affidavit from a law court.
Duruiheoma however explained that the commission had engaged the technical services of the private sector under a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement in order to remedy the challenge faced by NPopC in the vital registration process.
According to him, it is the responsibility of the commission to register births and deaths, but there is difficulty analysing the register due to analogue way of processing information.
He explained that NPopC got approval to engage Socket Works Ltd under the PPP after consultation with necessary authorities including the SGF.
Duruiheoma underscored the need for the partnership, saying that the commission has been struggling over the years to switch from analogue to automated ways of registering births and deaths.
“The commission has been struggling over the years to switch from analogue to automated, but couldn’t do that due to lack of funds.
READ ALSO LRU clears Surulere Accident scene after Tanker collides with SUV

“Births and deaths are being registered by hand and the states struggle to put the data together and even when they do, it is difficult for us in the headquarters to analyse it,” he explained.
He confirmed that the private firm “charge a token’’ for secured facilities featured into the certificates and maintenance of other facilities such as computers and networks used in processing the documents, and not for the certificates per se.
He added that the fee charged by the company was also for the improved quality of the birth certificate to secure it against replication and forgery.
“However, I have not been briefed on how much the company is charging for the birth registration,’’ Duruiheoma said.
Besides, he explained that NPopC had introduced a pilot scheme after engaging the firm in the FCT, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Edo and Rivers States.
“So far, the pilot scheme had just kicked off in Lagos and FCT,’’ the chairman said.
Duruiheoma assured that if the scheme succeeded in Lagos and Abuja, it would become a model, but if it failed it would be called off.
He therefore expressed gratitude to UNICEF for its support to the commission in the birth registration process.

Politics / Ambode Debunks Alleged Viral Reports Of Endorsing Sanwo-olu by metronaija4: 1:05pm On Sep 19, 2018
Following the viral report alleging that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has personally dumped his ambition to seek a second term in office, the Governor has distanced himself from the report saying it is falsehood.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, he noted that there is no iota of truth in the report adding that the message did not emanate from the Governor.

According to Aruna; “My attention has been drawn to a falsehood spreading across social media platforms on the endorsement of a candidate for the Lagos State Governorship position by His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

“There is no iota of truth in the said statement and it did not emanate from the Governor or his office. We are not oblivious of the desperation from certain quarters that is hell bent on fanning the embers of discord within the Lagos APC.”

He concluded saying; “The tremendous strides and infrastructural development embarked upon by Governor Ambode in almost three and half years will be completed by him within the constitutional stipulated time.

“This is why he has sought the support of party leadership and every Lagosian for re-election in order to complete the good works he has started. He is very much committed to that bid.”

However, in the viral statement alleging that Governor Ambode has dumped his second term ambition, the Governor was quoted as saying “I, Akinwunmi Ambode the Executive Governor of Lagos State after due considerations and consultations, I have decided to suspend my campaign for second term as the executive governor of our great state.”

The message continues that; “This is done in good faith to put the interests of our great state ahead of our personal ambition and to honour the clarion call for a change of leadership by our great party.

“I am committed to the program and manifestos of our great party APC to improve the lives of the people of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.”

In the same statement, Governor Ambode was alleged to have endorsed another candidate, Mr. Jide Sanwo-Olu. “In view of this, I hereby endorse Hon Jide Sanwolu to represent our party for the office of the executive governor of Lagos state.

I thank the leadership of our party at all levels for their supportive role during my term as the executive governor of Lagos state,” the statement read.

Business / 3 Customers Drag Bet9ja To Lottery Commission Over N3m Claim by metronaija4: 8:26pm On Sep 06, 2018
Three customers of Bet9ja have petitioned the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, claiming the betting company had not paid the over N3m stake owed them.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who obtained a copy of the petition, reports that it was received at the zonal office of the commission on Tuesday in Ilorin.

NAN also reports that the petition was signed by the contact persons for the affected customers, Emmanuel Ajiboye.

The petition stated that the trio had entered into a bet with the company under the category of “Transfer Market”, with bets placed on whether a player would go on transfer to another club or not.

The petitioners said a “ Loan Deals Do Not Count’’ transaction was confirmed in an email by Bet9ja on Aug. 28.

They, however, expressed dismay that on Aug. 31, Bet9ja “suddenly’’ turned around and reversed the rule of the transfer market by stating that “ Loan Deals Now Count’’ as contained in a mail the same day.

The petitioners expressed the belief that this was done in order to renege on payment to customers who had played and were going to win.

They described the company’s “contradictory” statements as unprofessional by a leading bookmaker.

The aggrieved petitioners said it was in their knowledge that players on loans still belong to their parent clubs and could still be recalled before the end of their loan deal.

They said that the sudden change was not acceptable as it was against the terms and conditions given to customers.

The petitioners also threatened to explore legal action should Bet9ja refuse to respond favourably to their complaint.

They urged the commission to look into the development and ensure justice was done.

Salau explained that the management of Bet9ja would be invited to state their own side of the case.

Health / Kwara: 432 Children Infected With HIV/AIDS In 6 Months by metronaija4: 6:22pm On Sep 05, 2018
The Kwara State Action Committee on HIV and AIDS (KWASACA) has recorded no fewer than 432 children infected with HIV and AIDS between January and June in Kwara.

The Coordinator of KWASACA, Dr Seleem Alabi, disclosed this at the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Kwara Chapter Week in Ilorin on Wednesday.

The programme was organised to sensitise women journalists on the importance of regular screening on HIV and AIDS.

Alabi in his presentation entitled: “HIV/AIDS an Opportunistic Infection”, said that the cases recorded were from mother-to-child transmission either at birth or through breastfeeding.

He explained that when babies were exposed to infected blood or breast milk, they would be vulnerable to the condition.

The KWASACA coordinator said that HIV was a virus that lives in human blood, sexual fluids, and breast milk.

According to him, it weakens the immune system, so that the body will have a hard time fighting off common germs, viruses, fungi, and other invaders.

Alabi said that the infection would spread from person to person when certain body fluids were shared, usually during vaginal or anal sex, or when sharing drugs through injection.

He said that it could also be passed to the human body from infected needles, tattoos and body piercing.

Alabi said it could also be spread through MouthAction, but added that the chances were slim.

The coordinator said statistics had shown that about 35 million people were victims of HIV and AIDS worldwide while 3.3 million of them were Nigerians.

He pointed out that advances in anti-retroviral therapy had made it possible for people with HIV to live longer and healthier lives.

Alabi said with HIV, a weakened immune system would increase vulnerability to a number of opportunistic infections, cancers, and other conditions.

He said that the public could prevent HIV and AIDS transmission by avoiding the sharing of sharp objects such as razor blades, used needles and syringes.

He said the state government had put in place laws that imposed between N50,000 and 100,000 fine on anybody stigmatising people living with HIV and AIDS.

Alabi also explained the 90/90/90 target to end HIV and AIDS by 2030.

He said that it meant: “90 per cent will be on anti-retroviral therapy, 90 per cent will get tested, and 90 per cent are zero HIV and AIDS infection in the society.’’

Politics / Boko Haram Highly Degraded, Buratai Insists by metronaija4: 6:22pm On Sep 04, 2018
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Tuesday restated that the Boko Haram terrorists had been “highly degraded” and that there was no resurgence of insurgency in the North-East as being insinuated in some quarters.

Buratai, who spoke in Jaji at the graduation of 55 Special Forces from “Advance Water Markship Training”, however, said: “in warfare, one must suffer some setbacks”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the last few days, there have been media reports of terrorists’ attacks on troops in the North-East in which they claimed a number of soldiers had been killed.

The army, however, denied the attack and loss of personnel.

Buratai was in Jaji in company of the visiting South African Army Chief, Lt.-Gen. Lindile Yam.

“You are all aware of the events in the country, especially the security landscape between 2013 and mid-2015.

“I am referring to the situation in the North-East where a band of insurgents, employing terror held sway over nearly the entire region, including large part of the North-Central and Northwestern parts of the country.

“However, from middle of 2015 to date, the insurgents have suffered high degradation. They no longer hold any territory within our sovereign state,” Buratai said.

He said that this was made possible by the adoption of correct strategies, support by President Muhammadu Buhari and the goodwill of the people.

According to him, a professional army should be capable of operating under all conditions across all terrains and by day or night.

He said : “The nature of modern warfare requires that an army must develop multi capability to address all changes.’’

Buratai commended the graduating Special Forces drawn from various corps of the army for the completion of the training.

The army chief promoted all the 55 personnel that participated in the training, saying it was his reward for them, having endured the rigours of the exercise.

He said the focus on effective training in the last years also largely accounted for the successes so far recorded by the army.

“It is pertinent to state that lessons learned from our counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations have to a large extent, guided our training and operation plans,” he said.

The South African army chief, having watched a simulation attack on supposed enemy camp by the graduands, commended the Nigerian military for the relations among the three services.

Yam noted that the strategies adopted by the Nigerian military in addressing the country’s security challenges were yielding positive results.

He also praised Nigerians for their resilience and being able to adapt to situations wherever they found themselves.
