Nairaland / General / Wife Of Policeman Killed In Balogun Market Fire by mfonelishasblog(m): 7:09am On Nov 09, 2019
Rose Dominic, the wife of the late policeman who died in the Balogun Market fire, says she is at a crossroads following the death of the family’s breadwinner.

The mother of four was awaiting the arrival of her husband, Sergeant Michael Dominic, from work on Wednesday when she was jolted by a phone call announcing the death of the 44-year-old cop

Michael, attached to the Ebute-Ero Police Station, was on duty at the scene of the fire which gutted Brasas Fabrics in Balogun Market, Lagos Island.
It was learnt that the native of Ekwureku in the Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State was chasing people away from the disaster spot when a concrete which suddenly fell from the fire-ridden building crushed him to death.

He is survived by four children – Mary, 10; Emmanuel, eight; Samuel, five and two-year-old Nathaniel – and aged parents.

Our correspondent gathered that Dominic had returned to the station around 8pm on Tuesday from a duty when he was told that the market was on fire.
He reportedly rushed to join a team of policemen deployed in the scene and tragedy struck 30 minutes into his arrival. Goods, largely fabrics, worth millions of naira were trapped in the fire which raged for two days.

Amidst tears, the deceased’s wife, Rose, told City Round that the family and her in-laws lived on Michael’s salary, lamenting that his death spelled doom for the entire family.
She stated, “We have been married for 11 years and we have four children together. The first child is about to start secondary school; the second is in primary three, the third one is in Nursery 2 while the last child is in crèche. What will I tell Samuel who really loves his father? He was the breadwinner of the family and he was the one taking care of his parents being the first child. Everybody depended on him. I don’t know where to start from; I am confused.
“He left for work on Tuesday morning and was supposed to come back on Wednesday evening. It was this afternoon (Wednesday afternoon) that someone called me and told me he was dead.”
Recalling their last words, Rose said her husband while leaving for work on Tuesday morning appealed to her to endure the trying time the family was going through and promised her a surprise next year if he was promoted.

“I want the government to help me with my children’s education. I don’t have any means; I depended on my husband alone. I don’t know how their future will look like without their father. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if I can survive without my husband; even the children’s school fees, we have not paid it,” she remarked tearfully.”
“He had a plot of land that he wanted to develop. He told me he would soon start building it. My husband was a good man. He was a man of God and he lived a true Christian life. He promised to get a shop for me,” she added before emotions betrayed her again.

The deceased’s uncle, Sunday Ideba, said he was in his shop in Lekki when someone broke the death of his nephew to him on the phone. “I was confused. I just rushed down,” he said.
Recounting the career of the late officer and their last moment, Ideba said it was unfortunate that Michael did not live to bury his aged parents.

He stated, “He joined the police in 2003/2004 and served at the Maroko Police Station for years. He was posted to the North sometime ago in the heat of the Boko Haram attacks. He would call and ask me to pray for him. He spent about three years there before he was posted to Port Harcourt (Rivers State). It was from there he was redeployed in Lagos two months ago.
“The person we expected would die is his grandfather, who is over 90 years old and could not walk again. He was the first son of the family and they depended on him. His mother is also old.

“Last Thursday, we still discussed about the health of his father. He told me that it was only me and a relation, Austin, he relied on to support him in burying his father. I told him to pray that whenever the father died, we should have means to give him a befitting burial. Who will bury the father now? His death is still like a dream to me.”
The uncle appealed to the police authorities and the Lagos State Goivernor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to assist in the upkeep of the wife and the four children.

“This man died in the line of duty. He died while trying to save people from the danger zone. The children are in school; there is no one to sponsor them again,” he added before bursting into tears.

Meanwhile, traders whose goods were destroyed in the razed complex, are still counting their losses.
Some of them approached by our correspondent declined comment, saying they had yet to recover from the shock of the loss.

One of them, Abdulraheem Raji, whose boutique got burnt in the inferno, said he was too devastated to talk. He looked on as remnant of the fire smouldered from the rubble.

His brother, Abdulrahman, who lamented that goods worth about N10m were lost in the fire, blamed the incident on lack of safety measures at the market.
He said, “We were only able to remove few of his goods. We had to run away for our lives. The owner of the building was using all the floors except the ground floor which she rented out. About 20 shops and a church were on the ground floor. This was not the first time the complex would be on fire. It happened in 2017.

“The government should be checking buildings like this in the market regularly to see if first aid safety equipment is put in place. They should check if they have a fire extinguisher and if it’s not expired. There was a fire extinguisher in the building but was it functioning? If there was a good fire extinguisher, it would have helped in putting out the fire before it escalated.”
The security man in charge of the five-storey building, Idris Ibrahim, said he got a call two hours after he got home that day from his duty post.

“I didn’t know when the fire started. I left the market around 8am. I was surprised when they called me that the complex was on fire. By the time I got here, the fire was much. It was unfortunate. I don’t know how to cope for now. The little amount I collect every month is what I use to cater for myself and family,” he bemoaned.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business District, Mr Olanrewaju Elegushi, said it was rather pathetic that Dominic paid the supreme price.

“The building collapsed after long hours of burning and part of the debris hit the policeman, Sergeant Michael Dominic, who was trying to send people away from the scene. He died in the process.

“The cause of the fire is not yet confirmed; we are just getting different stories from different quarters. Some people said it was a generator explosion; some said it was as a result of exposed wire. We will get in touch with the owner of the property. I believe the owner would be able to tell us what caused the fire.”

The Area A Commander, who oversees the police stations on Lagos Island, ACP Bode Ojajuni, said 12 hoodlums who took advantage of the incident to steal, had been arrested.

Crime / 40-year-old Widow Electrocuted In Ebonyi by mfonelishasblog(m): 1:10am On Oct 28, 2017
A 40-year-old dowager with three children, Mrs Joy Oluchi Osuchukwu, has been shocked to death by stripped streetlight links purportedly relinquished indiscreetly by a few authorities of Ebonyi State's Ministry of Power.

The catastrophe occurred before Udoka Hall! along Water Works Road in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state.

The Late Oluchi hailed from Umunze people group in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, yet was hitched to Late Mr Kingsley Osuchukwu from Nneato people group in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State who kicked the bucket four years prior.

The late dowager, until the point when her demise worked at Ezza South Local Government Headquarters of Ebonyi state.

As per onlookers, the late Oluchi was returning home from the area where she had gone to bring water for residential purposes, and unconsciously ventured on the exposed links.

Some shop proprietors who were at the scene of the episode disclosed to DAILY POST that the authorities of the state's Ministry of Power had dealt with that specific streetlight link prior in the day and relinquished the exposed links.

They affirmed that they had begged them to cover it before leaving yet they gave them feeble reason that they would return later and left.

"That same day, at around 8:30pm, the lady went through that zone not realizing that there were stripped links there and she was shocked in a split second", described one of them.

At the point when DAILY POST went to her family habitation situated on No 27 Ukwansi Street behind the Udoka Hall, the Chairman of Umunze Town Union, Ebonyi State section, Mr Uchenna Joseph Obi, portrayed that her kinswoman, Oluchi, had come back from the congregation before the disaster struck.

This was even as he faulted the authorities of the state's Ministry of Power for being in charge of her unfavorable passing.

"The inhabitants of that territory revealed to us that authorities of the Ministry of Power accountable for the streetlights came toward the evening that same day and chipped away at their streetlights. They surrendered those stripped wires and left.

"In the event that you go there now, you will in any case observe those stripped wires there. They simply left them on the pathway where individuals pass frequently. We are exceptionally furious. This is lack of regard on the way of the administration authorities.

"We have reached the state representative, Chief David Umahi. We sent him an instant message. We initially reached his representative, Dr Kelechi Igwe and subsequently, reached the senator himself", he described.

In the mean time, all endeavors to achieve the state's Commissioner for Power, Chief Emmanuel Uguru, on the phone demonstrated failed as his telephone was turned off.

Crime / Man Arrested After Stabbing Prostitute To Death In Enugu by mfonelishasblog(m): 4:18pm On Oct 23, 2017
A man who allegedly stabbed a commercial sex worker to death on Sunday, following a disagreement has been arrested by the police in Enugu State. In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said that the incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. at Onuato Street, Enugu. Amaraizu revealed that the victim accompanied the suspect to his apartment where they had a disagreement which resulted in a scuffle that led to her death. According to him, the suspect, who picked up the sex worker at Rangers Avenue on Oct. 22, had agreed with her that he would pay her N4,000 after passing the night with him. The police spokesman quoted the suspect as disclosing that he had drunk to his fill and that on arrival, because it was already getting late, he demanded that they had sex immediately. “The deceased allegedly requested to finish what she was inhaling in order to be in the mood for the business of the day. “The accused maintained that after several hours of pressuring her and without any answer, he slept off and woke up before 3 a.m,” Amarizu said. The PPRO said that the accused immediately ordered the sex worker to leave the apartment since the aim of bringing her appeared to have been defeated. “The accused said that the deceased resisted the order and allegedly warned him to beware as she would not succumb to any person’s threat whatsoever. “She later headed for a kitchen knife that was seen in the kitchen spot of the suspect’s room after allegedly biting him. “The accused further revealed that a fight suddenly broke out between them and as the deceased tried to stab him to death with the kitchen knife, he overpowered her,” said the PPRO. Amarizu quoted the suspect as saying that the kitchen knife went straight to the stomach of the deceased and he finally stabbed her on the neck region and she died. He said that the accused later wrapped her body and hurriedly arranged to travel to Lagos. According to him, the suspect was nabbed, following a tip-off from members of a local vigilante. The spokesman said that the body was recovered from the apartment and deposited at the mortuary of the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu, as investigations into the incident had commenced.

Politics / FG Explains How Director Accused Of N2b Pension Fraud Was Reinstated by mfonelishasblog(m): 12:55pm On Oct 23, 2017
The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, on Sunday offered explanations on how the former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force Team on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, was reinstated into the civil service.

The Minister’s position was contained in a statement by his spokesman, Ehisienmen Osaigbovo.
The statement said, “The ex-Chairman of the Presidential Task Force Team on Pension Reforms Abdulrasheed Maina was posted few days ago to the Ministry of Interior by the Office of the Head of Service in an Acting capacity to fill a vacancy created following the retirement of the Director heading the Human Resources Department in the Ministry.

“For the avoidance of doubt, issues relating to discipline, employment, re-engagement, posting, promotion and retirements of Federal Civil Servants are the responsibility of the Federal Civil Service Commission and Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, of which no Minister exercises such powers as erroneously expressed in this publication. It is understood that Maina’s last posting was with the Ministry of Interior, and that is probably why he was re-posted back to the Ministry.

“It is, therefore, improper for anybody to think that a Minister could exercise such powers or influence the process of Discipline, Re-engagement, and Deployment of any civil servant to his Ministry or any other Ministry for that matter. Again such responsibility is that of the Federal Civil Service Commission and/or the Head of Civil Service,” Dambazau said.

Maina was declared wanted after he fled the country based on the accusation that he mismanaged N2 billion pension fund.
His declaration as a wanted person by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is still on the anti-graft agency’s website as reported by The Eagle Online on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs / Reality Check: Is Trump Right That US Has Highest Taxes? by mfonelishasblog(m): 8:31am On Jul 27, 2017
The claim: The US has the highest taxes in the world.
Reality Check verdict: The total amount of tax raised by the United States as a proportion of the size of its economy is not the highest in the world. It also does not have the highest rates of taxes on households. By one measure, it does have the highest rate of corporation tax.
At a rally in Ohio on Tuesday, President Trump claimed that the US had the highest taxes in the world.
A broad measure of the level of taxes is to look at the total amount of tax taken by the government as a percentage of the amount produced by the economy (GDP).
The US is clearly not at the top of this list based on figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Foreign Affairs / President Donald Trump Says Transgender People 'can't Serve' In US Military by mfonelishasblog(m): 1:54am On Jul 27, 2017
US President Donald Trump says transgender people cannot serve in "any capacity" in the military.
He tweeted that he had consulted with military experts and cited "tremendous medical costs and disruption".
The Obama administration decided last year to allow transgender people to serve openly in the military.
But in June, Defence Secretary James Mattis agreed to a six-month delay in the recruitment of transgender people.
How has Mr Trump justified his decision?
As is often the case, the announcement came in a series of tweets.
Mr Trump said: "After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.
"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

Sports / Diego Costa Banned From Training, Management Promises That He Will Never Play Fo by mfonelishasblog(m): 1:10am On Jul 27, 2017
Chelsea’s star player – Diego Costa – has been banned from the training grounds by manager Antonio Conte and has been told by the club’s management that he won’t play for Chelsea again.
Recall that Costa told the club he wanted to leave three times in the last ten months; the first time was during last year’s pre-season tour when he asked to return to Atletico Madrid, his former club. Chelsea’s manager – Conte, responded by benching him for two friendlies. The second time was in January when Costa made it clear he wanted the mega-money move to Chinese club, Tianjin Quanjian in January while third time was at the end of the season.
Now with the 70 million Pounds capture of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, Conte has banished Costa from first team training and its now clear the Spanish striker will leave the club as soon as possible. Costa is not on the club’s pre-season tour squad and has been granted extended leave so he can conclude a deal with former club, Atletco Madrid.

Barcelona forward Neymar will stay at the club - or at least that is the "intuition" of his team-mate Gerard Pique.

Paris St-Germain have reportedly met the Brazilian's 222m euro (£199m) release clause.

"From the conversations that I had with him, it's just my intuition that he'll stay - other than that obviously I hope that he stays," said Pique.

Neymar scored twice in Barcelona's 2-1 friendly win over Juventus on Saturday.

After the win, Barca coach Ernesto Valverde reiterated his desire to keep Neymar at the club.
Pique then posted a picture of him and Neymar on Twitter, with the caption 'Se queda' ('He stays'), but has since downplayed the post.
