LAGOS—Miss Nadel Hunpoyanwha, daughter of the slain Chief Timothy Hunpoyanwha, who was shot dead by one of the security officials attached to the demolition team in the on-going removal of shanties on the Iwaya/Makoko waterfront, Yaba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, yesterday, cried out for justice, saying the killer should be brought to book. She also appealed for help so she can continue her education. Ten-year-old Nadel is in primary five.

She said: “There is no way I can continue because my father, who sponsors my education, was shot by a security official, yesterday (Saturday).

Nadel, however, pleaded for assistance from the state government saying: “The state government should come to our aid by assisting me and my siblings to complete our education.

“It cannot be possible for my mother, uncles and aunts to take the full responsibility of our education because they also relied on my late father for financial assistance.”

The deceased, Hunpoyanwha, was last Saturday shot dead by a Marine Police from Oworonsoki, while he was pleading with the demolition team not to demolish more than the stipulated area away from the electrical cable on the water. He was 51.

The deceased, with four wives and many children, became the deputy Baale in 2007, and lived on the upland area of the community. His residence was not marked for demolition.

Speaking to Vanguard in a telephone chat, Mr. Ade Aguntor, who witnessed the scene, identified the man as the assistant Baale of Makoko, Mr. Timothy Hunpoyanwha. The security officer, who shot Hunpoyanwha dead, was identified as Corporal Boma Peddle, a Marine Police Officer.

How it happened

Aguntor explained that the incident happened at 10:30am, when the representatives of the community, who were sent to Alausa secretariat to hold a meeting with the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Adesegun Oniru, were still briefing the elders on the outcome of the meeting held on Friday.

He said: “At the meeting, the Baale of Makoko Community, Chief Aji Steven, was informed that the officials of the state government had arrived to continue with the demolition exercise in his territory. He then left the meeting to order his subjects to ensure that they remove all their property from the house before the demolition commences.

“Steven, who was accompanied by Hunpoyanwha, sat down to watch how the exercise was progressing. As the demolition commenced, Steven further ordered those whose houses were being demolished to park their woods, because they will be useful.

Trigger-happy

“While the Baale was still giving the order, Peddle began to shoot sporadically, with one of the bullets hitting Hunpoyanwha in the stomach.

“Immediately he (Hunpoyanwha) was hit by the shot, he alerted the Baale who quickly rushed him into a boat towards Oworonshoki jetty. While on their way to Gbagada General Hospital, Hunpoyanwha died.”

When Vanguard visited the residence of the deceased, relatives and sympathisers were in mournful mood, with some weeping uncontrollably.

It was also learnt that over 10 relations, yesterday, came from Benin Republic to Makoko, after they received the news late Saturday night.

Also speaking, Joseph, younger brother to the late chief, said: “We have lost the bread winner of the family. That was the man that attends to the needs of the family members, especially on financial issues. We want the law to take its course.”

‘He foresaw his death’

Secretary to the Baale of Makoko, Mr. Asuka Remi, said the Chief foresaw his death, saying “he was reluctant to accompany the Baale to the scene of the demolition exercise when he was called upon.

“After we persuaded him to accompany the Baale, immediately he got to the scene of the demolition, he stood aside.

“The Chief was a peace-loving person, who does not involve himself in any violent case. Due to his peace-loving nature, he was made the head of Resolution Committee of the community.”

Residents take protest to Alausa

Following the killing of Hunpoyanwha, a community leader, and the ongoing demolition exercise at Makoko water front, residents of the area have vowed to take their protest to the seat of power in Alausa, today. They have also asked the authorities concerned to stop the exercise as it has affected their lives adversely.

Do not let that stop you from trying this amazing blueberry pancake recipe. Trader Joe's has a really great multigrain pancake and waffle mix, or you can use oat flour; you will need two cups. The other ingredients are: 2 scoops of vanilla whey protein, 2 tablespoons of grapeseed oil, 1 cup of almond milk, 3 egg whites and 1 cup of blueberries. Grapeseed oil was the new ingredient I substituted for the Smart-Balance cooking oil and it made a world of a difference. The grapeseed oil has a nuttier taste and pairs well with the almond milk. This batter is a little thicker than normal pancake batter but makes four medium-sized fluffy and moist pancakes. This replaces the white flour or Bisquick with a complex carb, adds protein, reduces fat with the egg whites and almond milk, and there are lots of nutrients and antioxidants from the blueberries. Add some flax seeds or flax seed meal for some omega-3.
Pizza is a food that I am super picky about. Usually it would be something of a cheat meal for me, so it better be a tasty piece of pizza. I love making a health version of this Italian favorite so that I can have pizza a lot more often and not feel too guilty about it. My favorite pizza to make is vegetable pizza on whole wheat crust. Pick any whole wheat crust, dough or even a whole wheat tortilla as the base. Use a half and half mixture of tomato sauce and olive oil with fresh ground pepper, red hot pepper flakes and minced garlic for the sauce. Top with broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, more fresh garlic, fresh basil, and light, shredded mozzarella cheese. Then bake it in the oven for 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees or until the cheese is melted and the crust is done to the desired crispiness. This is a quick and easy lunch or dinner option. You can also add chicken on top or add non-fat plain Greek yogurt to the sauce mixture for some added protein. Don't hesitate to experiment with different healthy toppings and share them with your friends.Eating healthy really is not boring. It actually becomes a game to see how I can transform a recipe to make it more healthy without sacrificing flavor. Fresh herbs and spices are the best way to add flavor to healthy dishes. Some of my favorites are red hot pepper flakes, garlic, cumin, cilantro, basil, lemon pepper and anything Mrs. Dash because it is sodium-free. It might even be a good idea to visit a local farmers market, a local grower, or even grow your own herbs and spices so you always have them fresh and available.
This week I have a challenge for you. Find one of your favorite recipes, go through the list of ingredients and try to substitute healthier ingredients. If you are working with eggs to egg whites, add an extra one because the white is obviously less egg than the whole. Sometimes it won't taste perfect, and it might take a couple of times to get it the way you like it, but do not be impatient or get discouraged. You might be a much better cook than you thought.

LAGOS — The immediate past Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, Capt. Adebayo Araba has explained why the Flight Data Recorder,FDR, of the ill-fated Dana plane that crashed last June in Iju-Ishaga, Lagos was burnt, according to the preliminary report released last week by Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB.

Captain Araba said that the Flight Data Recorder may have been burnt due to the inability of the Dana Air management to modify the component, just as he described the United States National Transportation Safety Board where the analysis of FDR took place as a credible agency in case of air accident. He however asked Dana Air to produce the Airline Directives ,AD,of its crashed MD83 aircraft.

He expressed doubts during a telephone conversation with aviation correspondents that Dana air management had been complying with the AD from the manufacturer on the maintenance of its fleet and dared it to make public the evidences of such compliance since it acquired the aircraft.

He noted that over the years, all aircraft manufacturers had modified the FDR to withstand any severe condition including fire, insisting that if the FDR had been modified, it would have withstood the intense fire.

He said: “No one knows the quality of the FDR of the crashed plane because all aircraft manufacturers have modified FDR of all planes and I doubt it if this went through any form of modification. The taking of the report to the NTSB, however I want to authenticate the report because it is the highest investigative body when it comes to aircraft accident.

“It is possible for the FDR to crash if the aircraft is an old model. It is possible Dana did not go through all those modifications being an old aircraft. We are talking about an aircraft that is over 20 years old here. It is unfortunate that anybody that died through air crashes in this country is culpable because no report is ever made to the public.”he concluded.

Nigeria: FG Plans Stiffer Sanctions for Unlicensed Patent Medicine Vendors

Ibadan — The Federal Government has concluded arrangements to impose stiffer sanctions on unlicensed vendors of patent medicines in the country with a view to sanitizing the drug industry, the Registrar of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Mrs. Gloria Abumere has said.

To this end, the Registrar has cautioned all patent medicine vendors in the federation to henceforth restrict themselves only to "over the counter drugs" for which they are licensed.

Any vendor who fails to comply with the directive, the Registrar said, risks a sanction of two years imprisonment.

Addressing journalists in Ibadan, the PCN Registrar urged the entire stakeholders in the drug industry notably the manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers to abide by their various areas of practice and the laws guiding the practice areas.

She warned that "non compliance would imply a deliberate attempt to jeorpadize the health of the people which would be resisted fully by the laws of the federation.

The Registrar who is currently on a working tour of states in the South West zone of the country on an enlightenment campaign emphasized that the PCN is the only regulatory body recognized by law on things pertaining to pharmacy, medicines and pharmaceuticals.

According to her, the PCN is the Federal Government parastatal established by Act 91 of 1992 (now cap 17 LFN 2004) and charged with the regulating and controlling pharmacy education and practice in all aspects and ramifications.

She expressed concern over the raging proliferation of patent medicine stores in unapproved locations across the country and concluded that "the enabling laws guiding the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria is being reviewed to further give the Council the teeth to make offenders suffer stiffer penalties."

To this end, the Registrar urged the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPMED) to call its teeming members to order so as not to run foul of the law guiding their operation.

According to the Registrar, the Council is currently working in collaboration with the operatives from the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to ensure that offenders do not escape from the big hammer of the PCN.

LASU Student Faces Trial For Terrorism

An alleged threat by a suspected terrorist to set the Police Force Headquarters Annex Lagos ablaze has been averted by operatives of the Force Intelligence Bureau Headquarters, Lagos Southwest Nigeria.
The suspected terrorist is called Usman Emmanuel, 31, from Kogi State, who claimed to be a final year student of Lagos State University, (Music Department) LASU, Ojo, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria. He was arrested and arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State on a 2-count charge to commit felony to wit, threat to kill and set ablaze the Force Headquarters building.
Police investigation revealed that in November 2011, the accused and others (now at large) phoned the Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, (names withheld) in charge of Intelligence Bureau, Force Headquarters, Lagos, allegedly demanding for N2 million ransom so that they will spare his life and those of other top police officers and shelve the plan to set ablaze the Force Headquarters.
The demand and threat was allegedly sent to the police boss in 16 text messages.
But when the victim could no longer bear the incessant threat messages, he reportedly informed his boss, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Force Intelligence Bureau, who directed him to fish out the caller.
Following the directive, a team led by DSP Austin Osebose down-loaded the phone number of the suspect from a telecommunication network.
They traced the suspect to a motor park in mainland area of Lagos, after a female undercover police officer sold a dummy to him that she had a business deal for him to execute.
Immediately he came to honour the appointment, he was arrested and taken to the station.
During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime and led the police team to his residence at Okokomaiko area of Ojo, Lagos, where about six sim cards of different networks were recovered from him.
At the conclusion of investigation, he was charged to court for threatening to kill police officers and set ablaze the Police Force Headquarters.
The offences, DSP Raymond Odion Akhaine, the prosecutor said, are contrary to Sections 1 (2) C(ii) of the Terrorism (Prevention Act) and punishable under Sections 2(2, ii) of the Terrorism Act, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2011.
The prosecutor objected to the bail of the accused on the ground of lack of jurisdiction to try the case.
Akhaine presented before the court an application for the remand of the accused in prison, pending the receipt of legal advice from the office of the Federal Director of Public Prosecution to try the matter at the high court.
The magistrate, Mrs. A. F. O. Botoku, ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison pending FDPP’s advice, but urged the police prosecutor to speed up the process and produce the FDPP’s advice within 30 days.
She adjourned the matter till 15 June 2012 for mention.
