Israel fought to defend themselves and had to consult God because the nation was a theocracy. Has God ever told them to dismantle their armies and never go to war. There were several kings in Israel who fought wars without consulting God, and yet they returned victorious. It's all in the Bible.

Jesus has Peter to put down his sword because it was not appropriate to use it at the time:
