Science/TechnologyEngr. Ukeme Okpob, Fnse: The Vision Behind The National Engineering Centre Annex by Mickiee(op): 5:38pm On May 29
As the countdown to the historic 2026 Engineering Week and the commissioning of the National Engineering Centre Annex, Sampson Udo Idiong Avenue, Atan Offot, Uyo, gathers momentum, it is fitting to reflect on the visionary leadership that transformed a long-held aspiration into a tangible institutional legacy. Among the defining moments in the history of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Uyo Branch, is the conception and commencement of the National Engineering Centre Annex under the leadership of Engr. Ukeme Okpob, FNSE, the 14th Chairman of the Branch, whose administration (2020–2022) laid the foundation for what is today emerging as one of the most significant infrastructural legacies in the history of the Branch.

History teaches us that every enduring institution is shaped by leaders who possess the courage to envision possibilities beyond their time and the determination to transform those visions into reality. For over thirty-seven years, the dream of a befitting engineering secretariat remained largely an aspiration within the NSE Uyo Branch. That narrative changed when the administration of Engr. Ukeme Okpob took the bold step of securing the current site, obtaining the necessary statutory approvals and documentation, and commencing the construction of what has today become the National Engineering Centre Annex.

Under his administration, the project recorded remarkable progress within a relatively short period. Beyond securing the land and processing critical approvals, construction commenced in earnest, leading to the completion of the substructure, decking, substantial structural works, perimeter fencing, roofing, and the completion of the conference hall, which subsequently hosted branch activities. The foundation laying ceremony held on August 27, 2021, represented more than the commencement of a building project; it marked the beginning of a new chapter in the institutional history of the NSE Uyo Branch.

Beyond the physical structure, Engr. Ukeme Okpob's administration also pursued initiatives aimed at strengthening the visibility and relevance of engineers within governance and public service in Akwa Ibom State. His commitment to service delivery, strategic engagement, and institutional advancement earned him the affectionate nickname "The Capacity Chairman" among members of the branch. His administration equally championed improved recognition for engineers in the State Civil Service and facilitated greater engineering representation in public governance, reinforcing the voice and relevance of the profession in Akwa Ibom State.

While the realisation of the National Engineering Centre Annex has continued through the collective commitment of members and the continuity provided by subsequent administrations, particularly those of Engr. Uwem E. Akpan, FNSE, PhD, and the current chairman, Engr. Emem S. Ezekiel, MNSE, history will always remember the administration that conceived the vision, secured the site, navigated the early challenges, and laid the foundation for what is now becoming a lasting symbol of engineering progress and professional excellence in Akwa Ibom State.

As the engineering community prepares to celebrate the commissioning of this landmark facility, it is appropriate to acknowledge that great institutions do not merely celebrate completed structures; they preserve the stories, sacrifices, courage, and visionary leadership that made such achievements possible. The National Engineering Centre Annex stands today as a testament to what vision, determination, and collective effort can accomplish when leaders dare to move aspirations from imagination to reality.
