Forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang The club captain has been exemplary since Arteta arrived and was once again crucial in the win over United. However, with 18 months left on his deal, Arsenal are unlikely to want to wed themselves to an ageing striker that has given off the impression he might want to leave. Given the nature of January it is best to keep him for now, but sadly the summer might be the best time to say goodbye for him and the club. Verdict – Sell in the summer Nicolas Pepe He is just getting started at Arsenal and with five goals and five assists in all competitions, it shows just how harsh some of the criticism of him has been. For sure he needs to get fitter, but so do most of the squad. When Pepe really hits his stride, Arsenal will be the beneficiaries and it will make the lazy analysis of his early form look even worse than it already does. Verdict – Keep Alexandre Lacazette Perhaps the hardest player in the squad to assess, Lacazette needs to prove between now and the end of the season that he can be the main man. With Aubameyang likely to leave, Lacazette has the opportunity to be the Arsenal number nine, but he needs to start scoring with more regularity if he is to do so. If he cannot achieve this, I can see him moving on and Arsenal starting again. Verdict – Assess in the summer Gabriel Martinelli A sensation, he is the main reason fans aren’t too worried about the situation with Lacazette and Aubameyang. In Martinelli, Arsenal have a natural goalscorer with an incredible work ethic and the nous of a seasoned veteran. It is a real shame that he missed out of Arteta’s first few matches, but he will surely be a crucial cog in the Spaniard’s Arsenal machine. Verdict – Keep Eddie Nketiah Just returned from a loan spell at Leeds United where he impressed every time he got on the pitch but wasn’t afforded too much playing time. Whether he goes out on loan again remains to be seen, but Arteta may want a little look at what he can offer the squad now. With no shortage of Championship clubs interested, Arsenal can take their time and make sure they get Nketiah the best possible move for his development. Verdict – Loan |
Midfielders Lucas Torreira A man transformed under Arteta and finally playing in the position that suits him best. I would still like him to get slightly fitter but he has all the tools to excel in that deep-lying role. There were rumours floating about suggesting he might leave, but given how much he looks to be enjoying his football under Arteta, I don’t think that is likely anymore. Verdict – Keep Granit Xhaka This is a tough one. He has been really good under Arteta and is someone I always felt was treated harshly. His behaviour with the fans was unwise, but also you can see how he got to that point. It now looks as though Arteta has convinced him to stay until the summer, which is good news, at which point the club and the player should assess their options. He can have a future at the club is he keeps playing like his, but it will be up to him. Verdict – Assess in the summer Matteo Guendouzi A star in the making that has rightfully been sat down in recent weeks. Was getting through so much work under Emery he needed a rest, but will still be a crucial player under Arteta. The club know how important he is and will be and they should be doing all they can to get him tied down to a new contract. Verdict – Keep Dani Ceballos Dubbed the second coming of Santi Cazorla after his first start in an Arsenal shirt, Ceballos has hardly been mentioned since. An injury took him out of the spotlight during the final weeks of Emery’s reign and he will now have half a season under Arteta to show what he is all about. A player that certainly has quality, but also frustrates. Unless he can really impress, I find it hard to see him staying at Arsenal beyond this season, although this is mostly because of the price tag Real Madrid are likely to place on him. Verdict – Return to Real Madrid Joe Willock There was a lot of hype around Willock at the start of the season and rightly so, but it is no secret that his form has tailed off. Played too much in an unnatural number 10 role, Emery couldn’t get the most out of him and he has faded from the picture. Certainly one to keep going forward, but he needs a run of games deeper in a midfield three if we are to see his best stuff. Verdict – Keep Bukayo Saka One of the most talented young players at the club, Saka has impressed on the wing and at full-back this season. This player can be a real gem if nurtured in the right way and I think Arteta is the man to do that. In a front line with a player like Nicolas Pepe, Saka can be the perfect ball retention option, while he also shown his crossing and shooting ability. Perhaps ahead of Reiss Nelson in the pecking order, although it is hard to tell. Verdict – Keep Reiss Nelson A player clearly favoured by Arteta, he has quietly impressed with his work rate and ability to retain the ball and connect play. I cannot see him ever scoring lots of goals which may disappoint some fans, but a really valuable player that can be a really important option for Arsenal. Furthermore, with work on the training ground there is no reason he cannot add goals to his already impressive skill-set. Verdict – Keep Emile Smith Rowe Another one of the string of talented young players to make the step up this season, Smith Rowe gives off the impression that injuries mean he is slightly further behind in his development. A loan move where is guaranteed minutes would do him well, especially if it is in an environment where he is able to finesse his raw talent. Verdict – Loan Mesut Ozil The constant debilitation and rehabilitation of Mesut Ozil has been exhausting to watch, but with the way he is playing under Arteta you can only say that it was all worth it. With just 18 months left on his deal you cannot see him getting another, but Arteta will likely want to wring out every last drop of Ozil magic until he leaves. Verdict – Keep |
Defenders David Luiz The disaster, panic buy that could turn out a masterstroke, Luiz has looked very accomplished under Arteta and is emerging as the new ‘leader’ within the group. Not only is his arm waving and fist-pumping great to see, but his defending and passing has also been excellent in recent week. Central defence is perhaps Arsenal’s weakest area and with a number of players injured Luiz will likely be a central cog for the rest of the season. Come the summer, he should be retained although with William Saliba returning from his loan, he might not be first choice. Verdict – Keep Sokratis Has had a bit of a shocker up until now, but put in his best performance by some way against Manchester United to repair some bridges with fans. Still a player on the wrong side of 30 whose contract expires next summer, Arsenal should be in a position come the summer to get rid. Verdict – Sell in the summer Calum Chambers Very impressive at centre-back, less so at right-back, but given the rejuvenation of Ainsley Maitland-Niles he should now be used solely as a central man. Doubt he will ever be the main man at Arsenal, but a useful squad man that can always step in and play a role, it is a real shame to see him out for the season. Provided he can get back fit, Arsenal should probably give him a new deal. Verdict – Keep Rob Holding Another man desperately unlucky with injuries, he is a player I still have high hopes for under the tutelage of Arteta. A good passer of the ball, it would be nice to see him get a run in the side alongside Luiz for the rest of the season so we can assess how good he could be. Certainly one to keep, but also it is up to him to prove he can be a starter. Verdict – Keep Shkodran Mustafi Poor guy, he came back from the brink with some decent performances because of injuries to other players only to mess it all up in the final minutes against Chelsea. Truthfully, not of the required level and someone that should be jettisoned immediately. Verdict – Sell Dinos Mavropanos We have barely seen him for two years and he hasn’t been overly impressive when we have. Nonetheless, deserves the opportunity to go out on loan and try and prove himself before we completely write him off as an Arsenal player. So many other players looked cooked under Emery, so we can’t fully blame him for falling under a similar malaise. Verdict – Loan Hector Bellerin Another player so unlucky with injury, but one that can be so good on his day. Given the fact that he did struggle slightly on his return, it is worth allowing him come back slowly, especially with Maitland-Niles in such good form. For his loyalty and human quality, deserves all the time he needs to return to his best. Verdict – Keep Ainsley Maitland-Niles My hero, a player I have always rated and someone I am so happy to see receiving praise. Under Arteta, he looks like someone that could really become a top player and one that can play a variety of positions. I would still be fascinated to see him move into midfield full-time, but given the influence he is having from right-back, there is no need to rush. Verdict – Keep Sead Kolasinac A good if limited players, Kolasinac has certainly got better as his Arsenal career has worn on. He put in a brilliant effort against United on New Years Day and clearly impressed Arteta with his desire. With Bukayo Saka impressing at left-back and Kieran Tierney out injured, it is an interesting time for him and perhaps a crucial time if he wants to stay an Arsenal player in the long-run. Verdict – Assess in the summer Kieran Tierney A really talented player that has had his first season at Arsenal ruined through injury. Probably someone that will have to wait until next season to show his best form, but also is young enough for that not to be a huge issue. Verdict – Keep |
Goalkeepers Bernd Leno Outstanding all season barring one moment of madness against Chelsea. Has turned out to be a really shrewd piece of business and didn’t cost the earth and with a contract that doesn’t expire until 2023, should be an Arsenal player for years to come. The one concern the club might have is him having his head turned, but with Arteta on board and the new project in full swing, expect Leno to be between the sticks for the foreseeable future. Verdict – Keep Emiliano Martinez A player that has been at Arsenal for a number of years, it seems as though Martinez has only just started to show his quality. An able deputy for Leno so far this year barring a few shaky moments in the EFL Cup 5-5 draw at Anfield, Martinez has proven himself as a worthy cup keeper. The only issue with him is that he may want to move on to find regular football. At 27, he has only made 86 professional appearances at club level and would surely be able to find a number one job at a top flight club in the summer. The ball is well as truly in his court on this one. Verdict – Keep (if they can) Dejan Iliev ust returned from his loan spell in Slovakia, the 24-year-old would appear to not have much of a future at the Emirates Stadium. With Leno and Martinez not that much older that him and Arthur Okonkwo emerging behind, it would be best for him to move on. Verdict – Sell Matt Macey Pretty much ditto with what I said about Iliev, although the club may want to keep one of them around depending on Okonkwo’s development. Because of the fact he has been around the squad so far this season as the number three, he is worth retaining until the summer when Arsenal are in a better position to assess the long-term prospects of the goalkeeper position Verdict – Sell in the summer |
In one short week since his first game as head coach Mikel Arteta has cast away the feeling of gloom that had been enveloping the Emirates Stadium for a number of months under Unai Emery. From behind the clouds a new of light has emerged and suddenly the fans remember the unique qualities that Sokratis and Sead Kolasinac bring to any side. Given the struggles the club has faced this season and in truth since Emery arrived in north London, it is hard not to feel intoxicated by the sense of positivity around the squad, however, with January upon us we must also remember the issues that still need solving. Although Raul Sanllehi is famously opposed to doing business in January, the number of injuries blighting Arsenal’s squad mean a few additions would perhaps not go amiss. Furthermore, Arsenal have a series of players that have under-performed and could perhaps be suited to a new challenge. In order to sort the wheat from the chaff, I have individually assessed each player and will determine how Arsenal should approach them. Eventually, I will decide if Arsenal should keep, sell or loan them, with an eye on the January transfer window and the summer. |
