AgricultureGroups Protest The Influx Of GMO Products Into Nigeria by Miki22(op): 4:09pm On Dec 21, 2018
A coalition of civil society organisations has condemned the continuous influx of Genetically Modified (GM) crops and products into the country.
The CSOs, comprising of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), GMO- Free Nigeria Alliance, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) and Bio-integrity and Natural Food Awareness Initiative, called for a ban on GMOs in the country.
Bearing placards with the inscriptions ‘Nigerians reject GMOs,’ ‘FoodNotPoison,’ Biotech industry hands off our food’, the protesters accused the National Bio-safety Management Agency (NBMA) of illegally granting approvals for the importation of some GM crops.
Speaking on behalf of the CSOs, Director, Health of Mother Earth Foundation, Nnimmo Bassey, said the government should ensure a close surveillance of the borders, markets and farms to stop the illegal entry of GMOs into the country.
He said: “Over the years, the gate has been open for the influx of GM foods and products into the country. We are very concerned about the negative impacts on consumers. It is something the government should pay attention to but it seems the agencies promoting this kind of technology are running without any form control.”
Bassey disclosed that in its recent survey conducted in 10 Nigerian cities, the group could confirm the presence of over 30 imported GMO crops, most of which were cereals and vegetables in our market shelves.
He said while other countries are taking measure in banning these crops, the Nigerian government was bent on introducing more GM crops to the market.

AgricultureHow To Cultivate Okro In Dry Season by Miki22(op): 1:59pm On Dec 19, 2018
The first thing you must always remember or know about okra production is that it grows best only in warm season.

Okra seeds germinate and grow faster on well-drained, fertile soil. The soil’s pH should be close to neutral between 6.5 and 7.6. If the soil is not rich enough, you can use compost or organic manure to make the ground more fertile.

Okra is then planted using the seeds and directly in your farm or garden. The seeds can be soaked in water overnight before planting, some does for 24hrs before the planting to reduce the dormancy and this process helps to speed up the germination time.

When you are planting okra seeds, make sure to leave a space of about 1 to 2 feet between each plant on the same row. And a space of about 3 to 4 feet in between two rows. Okra plants might be tall depending on the species of the okra you are planting, so they need enough room to grow well.

It is advisable that you make ridges before planting okra. It has been observed that okra grow better on ridges than on flat land.

You should remove weeds as often as possible. Also, you might have to water them if you are planting during the dry season.

Okra grows slowly at the early stage but as the temperature becomes warmer, it begins to grow faster. In the later stage, as the okra plant grow taller, the leaves become bigger and it starts to produce yellow flowers. The appearance of flowers is followed by the pods. They can reach full size in 2 or 3 days if the weather is warm enough.

The average length of a full-size pod is about 2 – 4 inches. As soon as they begin to reach full size, it is advisable to begin harvesting. If they stay longer than they should, the pods will become more fibrous and tough. Most species of okra plant takes an average of 45 to 60 days to grow to maturity.

Also, thinning is important once the plant begin to sprout. On the other hand, you need to look out for diseases and pests and control them to avoid ruining your plans for your farm.

About two months from the planting date and you can be harvesting every three days.

NOTE: After the first harvest, remove the lower leaves to help speed up production.

AgricultureECOWAS Parliament Advocates10% Budget For Agric by Miki22(op): 11:56am On Dec 18, 2018
The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) has urged member nations to invest at least 10 per cent of their annual budgets in the agricultural sector.
The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Moustapha Cisse Lo, while speaking during the planetary of the ECOWAS Parliament, acknowledged that agriculture is the backbone of every economy in Africa, but unfortunately, no West African Country had been able to meet up with the 2014 Malabo Deceleration where pledged members to invest at least 10 per cent of their budgets in the sector.
He lamented that the investment in the sector had not improved to achieve the expected six per cent growth rate, saying resources were not disbursed on time to the sector throughout the financial year.
The speaker, while interacting with the ECOWAS People’s Agriculture Budget Summit on the floor of the parliament, said the low investments in the sector had deprived it from contributing to the economic development and poverty reduction.
The speaker urged the parliamentarians to pressurise their government to invest 10 per cent of their budgets, saying Africa had vast land, water resources, manpower and donor agencies were willing to invest in the sector.
The Action Aid Country Director, Ene Obi, stressed the need to implement the Malabo declaration.

AgricultureCross River Govt Trains 1000 On Digital Farming by Miki22(op): 11:17pm On Dec 16, 2018
Cross River State governor, Senator Ben Ayade
In a bid to boost food production, the Cross River State Government has trained 1,000 farmers on how to improve farming with modern technology.
The beneficiaries who were given iPad phones were recently sent to the Nigerian–Israeli Training Centre, Abuja to acquire knowledge on modern farming.
Governor Ben Ayade, who disclosed this in Calabar during the Farmers’ Day Celebration and solidarity rally organised by the state farmers’ Club, noted that the development will be the first time “in the history of Nigeria that we are going to have digital farmers.”
While stressing the importance of the i-pads, he said one of the major tools that would eradicate poverty and provide food for all is agriculture, as state government intends to use farming to create jobs and improve the state economy.
The Governor explained that the state would be providing N500m grants through the newly established Calabar Microfinance bank to give out free-interest loans to farmer, adding that government is also offering free land to farmers through the State Ministry of Agriculture.
He urged people of the state to see farming as a better option. “The amount of money you make being a farmer is bigger than any appointment and so the market is there.
“Everyone is drifting into farming and I am asking you to be the early starter. So you need to take advantage of our vitaminzed rice plant, which is the first in the whole of Africa, where you produce rice that is not just starch, but contains high levels of vitamins.
“We need to go back to the farm and this is why I set up the Cross River State Microfinance Bank with a startup investment of N500, 000,000. As long as you are going into agriculture, you will get something from the state.” Ayade assured.
Speaking earlier, Coordinator of the Cross River Farmers Cooperatives Empowerment, Oliver Ntui thanked the governor for his support to farmers, particularly in the area of technology.According to Ntui: “Your agricultural revolution is unprecedented; your rice revolution is overwhelming as you have empowered over 12,000 farmers in Cross River State.
“Out of this number, you have graciously approved the training of 1000 farmers in modern and cutting-edge technologies in rice farming by a reputable agricultural research and technology transfer institute (CCS) in Abuja,” he said.

Celebrities5 Things To Learn From Linda Ikeji Baby Daddy Saga by Miki22(op): 5:21pm On Dec 14, 2018
5 Things To Learn in Linda Ikeji Saga With Her Estranged Husband

I decided to highlight 5 things I have noted and learnt from this Linda Ikeji Baby Daddy Saga.

Linda Ikeji is a well popularly known blogger in Nigeria. Incase you don’t know Linda ikeji use her blog to gossip about fail marriage of other celebrities like her. She even vowed not to sleep with married men, not to talk of becoming a baby mama for a man.

1. This her saga with shoremi has finally blown out secrets. Linda didn’t practice what she was preaching, and have possibly deceived many into the same beliefs. Especially those female who see her as there role model and mentor.
2. It also reveals the fake celebrity life on the social media space, I still remember vividly when I read it on Nairaland, when Linda Ikeji was flaunting her engagement ring on the social media space. Today the man she claims father her son, hasn’t even engaged her. And he is a married man.
3. It’s a bad act to come into conclusion with Linda and start to call Mr. Shoremi a cheater, even though you have only heard Linda part of the story. You might turn back to blame Linda, When you hear the man part of the story.
4. This also teaches us that no matter our wealth and fame, you still need a man your life as a female, Even though Kemi Olunloyo claimed that Linda stole the man sperm, that I don’t know. If you still follow those celebrities and didn’t sit tight for your life, to plan your life. You can still continue to shout feminism until you get to menopause stage.
5. I can also call it a marketing strategy by Linda ikeji to get her blog & platform booming again, by deciding to break the news herself and get Nigerians follow this her story for December saga.

KEY LESSON: When Jesus was alive as a human being, he nearly fell for the flesh, Look up to God the author and the finisher of our faith as No 1 Mentor. Live your life, without spilling stones in others life, because of circumstances that have happened to them. Be your original self, Don’t imitate others. Don’t mock others of there present circumstances, you never know what the future holds for you.
Enjoy your weekend

AgricultureHow To Start Lettuce Farming In Nigeria by Miki22(op): 2:53pm On Dec 08, 2018
Lettuce (Lactuva sativa) is an annual plant that belongs to the family Asteraceae. It is native to Southern Europe and Western Asia. This plant descended from wild lettuce latica scariola, a common weed of roadsides and wastelands in both ancient and modern times.
Lettuce is a very nutritious food source and generally the darker the leaf the more nutritional value it has. It is a very good source of vitamins A, K, C, folate, manganese and chromium.
Probably the leafiest and greenest of the leafy greens, lettuce is ‘The King’ when it comes to getting antioxidants and vitamins. A reason why it is gradually gaining much popularity in Nigeria and Africa.
Lettuce is easily cultivated, and it requires low temperatures to prevent the plant from flowering quickly.
Growing lettuce could be a very profitable agribusiness for agripreneurs when properly done. It is therefore imperative to note the following guidelines while embarking on lettuce farming.

KNOWING YOUR VARIETIES
There are four distinct types of lettuce – leaf (also known as looseleaf), Cos or romaine, crisphead, and butterhead.
SOIL REQUIREMENTS
The plant grows well on a wide variety of soils ranging from light sand to heavy clay, however, best results are obtained on fertile loams that are rich in organic matter.
A pH between 5,5 and 7 is optimum. Lettuce should be grown on soils with a high water-holding capacity and proper drainage for good root growth and plant performance.
Soil test your farm and lime the soil to raise the pH above.
PLANTING REQUIREMENTS
Before you plant your lettuce seeds, make sure the soil is prepared. It should be loose and drained well so it’s moist without staying soggy.
To keep the soil fertile, feed it with organic matter about one week before you seed or transplant. Since the seed is so small, a well-tilled seedbed is essential.
Lettuce is regularly sown directly in the field to a depth of 10 to 15 mm. The seedlings are later thinned out to the desired spacing and they are sometimes used for transplanting.
TRANSPLANTING SEEDLINGS
Seedlings should be transplanted between 4 – 6 weeks after sowing. Seedlings must be transplanted at the correct depth in a little planting hole that has been made in the ground prior to planting.
If the seedlings are forced into the ground, without a hole being prepared for them to be inserted into, the root system will be damaged and the plant will experience stress resulting in poor yield.
Once the seedling is placed inside the hole the area should be firmed so that sufficient contact is made between the seedling and the soil.
CLIMATIC REQUIREMENTS
Temperature
Lettuce is a cool season crop that grows best within a temperature range of 12 °C to 20 °C. It does not suffer from light frosts and winter cold except near maturity.
Severe frost before harvest can scorch leaves and heads. Temperatures above 27 °C affect head development and plant edible quality and also promote premature seed stalk development. High temperatures also inhibit germination and can cause a high incidence of tip burn.
Rainfall
The crop has high moisture requirements and not more than 50% of the available water in the root zone should be depleted before irrigation.
FERTILIZER APPLICATION
Apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers prior to planting. Nitrogen fertilization should be kept to a minimum prior to planting.
Apply nitrogen as a side-dress application once the crop is established. Frequent, light watering will cause the leaves to develop rapidly, resulting in high-quality lettuce.
Watering lettuce early in the morning will reduce the number of hours of leaf wetness and limit foliar diseases. Overwatering, especially in heavy, tight soils, can lead to diseases, soft growth and scalding or burning of the leaf margins.
Fertilize three weeks after transplanting. Lettuce prefers soil that is high in humus, with plenty of compost and a steady supply of nitrogen to keep if growing fast. Use organic alfalfa meal or a slow-release fertilizer.
WEED CONTROL
Weeds are controlled mechanically, manually or chemically. Mechanical weed control can only be practiced before planting because of close spacings.
Weeds are removed by hand hoeing or pulling between plants in the rows. Chemical control can be achieved through the application of propyzamide shortly after sowing, which can last 12 months and longer in the soil.
PEST CONTROL
Like most crops, lettuce is vulnerable to pests. These vary by region and time of year. Fortunately, growing plants off the ground is one of the best ways to avoid pests.
Aphids
Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that are most commonly green and black in colour, but may also be gray, brown, pink, red, yellow, or lavender. They tend to feed on tender, young growth causing it to appear puckered or deformed.
There are numerous methods of aphid control, including botanical sprays such as insecticidal soap, pyrethrum, rotenone, and horticultural oils. Beneficial insects such as ladybugs will also help to eradicate the pest.
Other major pests of lettuce are Cabbage LoopersCucumber Beetles.
HARVESTING AND STORAGE
Leaf lettuce may be cut whenever it is large enough to use. Cutting every other plant at ground level will give the remaining plants more space for growth.
Leaf lettuce reaches a maximum size (6 to 12 ounces) in 50 to 60 days.
Butterhead varieties form small, loose heads that weigh from 4 to 8 ounces at harvest (60 to 70 days). The innermost leaves, which tend to blanch themselves, are a delicacy.
Cos varieties have an upright growth habit and form a large head. To store lettuce, wash, drip dry and place it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Lettuce keeps best at 32 degrees F and at high (95 percent) humidity.

AgricultureKaduna Poultry Aggregators Laud School Feeding Programme by Miki22(op): 11:39am On Dec 03, 2018
Poultry aggregators in Kaduna have lauded the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) for helping to revitalise the livestock sector and generate more income.
Vice chairperson/egg aggregator, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kaduna State chapter, Hajiya Binta Adamu, explained that using PAN members to collect and supply eggs for the feeding programme in the state had helped in spreading wealth.
She disclosed that since the commencement of school feeding in Kaduna State in 2017, PAN had grown, and initial sceptics were now part of the scheme.
“The idea of using PAN members to collect and supply the eggs is a strategy that helps in spreading wealth. Since the advent of the NHGSFP, membership of PAN Kaduna State chapter has increased from 982 registered members to about 2000 members,” said Adamu.
She further disclosed that the initiative has led to increased production of eggs in Kaduna, with farmers and other players in the supply chain smiling to the banks.
Adamu explained that “Kaduna State joined the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) on 14 July 2017 and the aggregator supplies 35,000 crates of eggs weekly. This quantity of egg is being mopped from big registered and small unregistered poultry farmers as well as women co-operatives across the 23 local government areas in the state, as there is no way one person can supply such massive number of eggs every week.
“Most of our farmers who had difficulty in selling their eggs and some selling on credit in the open market suddenly regained their liberty when we started mopping their eggs and paying them instantly.
“The number of farmers who currently supply eggs to the NHGSFP in Kaduna State stand at over 500 persons; this includes small farmers that supply between five to 50 crates on a weekly basis. In Kaduna State, eggs are in high demand and are the key in poultry farming as farmers are increasing their production,” she said.
