Tips for Our Critical Reasoning Tests

Why use tests as part of the recruitment process?
• To help ensure fairness in the selection process
• To reduce the costs associated with interviewing ‘everybody’
• To reduce turn around time and risk of hire error
• To help build a learning culture

Why use critical reasoning tests?
• High level verbal & critical reasoning have been consistently shown to be relevant to job performance
• Critical reasoning tests help tell how well a prospective candidate can reason through different scenarios and guide decision making

What the test measures
• Reasoning in the real business world
• Ability to interpret and reason with written information
• Ability to reason with & draw appropriate conclusions from numerical information

Why this type of test?
• Because it’s designed to assess reasoning in the real world work
• Because it utilizes and reflects real business (but non-specialist) topics
• Because it’s designed according to well established psychometric principles/procedures
• Because it is accredited and certified as appropriate for graduate level positions up to middle management, a good fit for MTNN levels 1 & 2 positions

Validity
• Test result shall be valid for 3 months for internal, and 6 months for external candidates
• Those who pass the tests need not write any for another 3 months and can keep applying
• The objective is to ensure candidates pursue continuous learning & improve reasoning skills

Test Procedure
• Practice questions & detailed description of the tests will be given to candidates on the test day
• 15 minutes would be allotted for candidates to read through and understand, as well as practice with the sample questions
• The main tests will only be administered after this is done

Numerical Reasoning Sample Questions

This test measures the ability to reason with, and draw appropriate conclusions from, numerical information. The data is presented in the form of a range of different tables, charts and graphs which summarise basic business information drawn from the workplace, in particular the leisure industry. The task for each question involves analyzing the information provided and then selecting the correct answer from the five options presented. Candidates are allowed to use calculators, as the emphasis of this test is on understanding and evaluation, rather than simple computation.

ANSWERS

1. Year 3 (option C). To get the cost per employee for each year, divide Total costs (₤m) by number of employees. This gives the following results: Year 1 = 0.0138; Year 2 = 0.0122; Year 3 = 0.0118; Year 4 = 0.0119; Year 5 = 0.0120. The lowest of these is Year 3.

2. Year 4 (option C). To obtain the proportional increase in sales from year to year, divide Total sales for each year by Total sales for the preceding year. This gives: Year 2 = 1.046 (So Year 2 sales are 1.046 times Year 1 sales); Year 3 = 1.073; Year 4 = 1.027; Year 5 = 1.053; Year 6 = 1.139. The lowest proportional increase is in Year 4 (option C).

ANSWERS

1. Although this seems a likely condition for the organization to attach to the benefit, no information is provided about restrictions on the availability of the cut-price holidays. Given that you are asked to answer on the basis of what the text actually says, the correct response to this question is “Cannot say”.

2. Since this passage states that staff have free off-duty access with their families it cannot be the case that the children of staff can never use the facilities for free. The correct answer is therefore “False”.
