Progeria Progeria is a very rare genetic disease that causes children to age rapidly. Children with progeria appear to be healthy at birth but usually start to show signs of rapid aging in the first two years of their life. Symptoms, diagnosis and management are discussed. How common is progeria? Progeria affects about 1 in 20 million people around the world. According to the Progeria Research Foundation, there are about 350 to 400 children living with progeria worldwide at any time. Progeria seems to affect boys and girls equally, and is not more common in one race than another. What causes progeria? Progeria is caused by a mutation (change) in the lamin A (LMNA) gene. This gene makes a protein that holds the nucleus of a cell together. Because of the change in the gene, the protein becomes defective. This makes the nucleus unstable, which is believed to cause the premature aging process. The mutation of the LMNA gene does not run in families. In fact, parents and siblings of children with progeria are rarely affected. |

4 ways to detect a lie 1. Watch body language. Liars often pull their body inward when lying to make themselves feel smaller and less noticeable. Many people will become squirmy and sometimes conceal their hands to subconsciously hide fidgety fingers. You might also observe shoulder shrugging. 2. Observe micro-facial expressions. article continues after advertisement People will often give away a lie in their facial expression, but some of these facial expressions are subtle and difficult to spot. Some people will change their facial coloration to a slighter shade of pink, others will flare their nostrils slightly, bite their lip, perspire slightly, or blink rapidly. Each of these changes in facial expression signifies an increase in brain activity as lying begins. 3. Listen to tone, cadence, and sentence structures. Often when a person is lying they will slightly change the tone and cadence of their speech. They might start speaking more quickly or slowly, and with either a higher or lower tone. Often, the sentences they use become more complex as their brain works on overdrive to keep up with their tale. 4. Watch for when they stop talking about themselves... People who are lying will also sometimes start removing themselves from their story, and start directing the focus on other people. You will hear fewer me’s and I’s as liars try to psychologically distance themselves from the lie that they’re weaving. |
