Video assistant referees are set to be used at this year's World Cup in Russia after football's lawmakers voted to approve the technology.


VAR has been trialled in some domestic English cup games this season, and has been used in Germany and Italy.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) "unanimously approved" its introduction on a permanent basis after a meeting in Zurich on Saturday.

Leagues and competitions must now apply to Ifab to implement the technology.

'Minimum interference - maximum benefit'

Ifab said "the philosophy of VARs is 'minimum interference - maximum benefit' which aims to reduce unfairness caused by 'clear and obvious errors' or 'serious missed incidents'".

It added the incidents that would refer to would be in relation to:

1. Goal/no goal

2. Penalty/no penalty

3. Direct red card (not second yellow card/caution)

4. Mistaken identity (when the referee cautions or sends off the wrong player)

Real Madrid launch stunning, limited edition retro jersey

Real Madrid have released a limited edition retro jersey, but it is only available to buy from the Bernabeu club shop.


Los Blancos are just the latest club to reveal a retro range, following the trend set by clubs such as Juventus, who wore their own nostalgia-inducing kit for their 120th anniversary next season.

The La Liga giants unveiled the 'icon jersey', which will reportedly cost £100 – more expensive than the current playing shirt – on Instagram on Thursday.


The strip is a hark back to the earliest Madrid kits, which featured a prominent blue, diagonal stripe from the shoulder to the opposite hip.

This new edition is also, as is custom, a brilliant white, but the royal blue stripe does not run diagonally across the front.

The blue accent comes in the form of a horizontal band, but it certainly still evokes a feeling of sartorial pleasure in reminding us of those early days.

France international striker Karim Benzema modelled the shirt and wrote on Twitter: 'New Real Madrid icon jersey #Heretocreate #KBNueve.'

Neymar pictured in wheelchair after touching down in Brazil

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar arrived in Brazil in a wheelchair ahead of surgery on his broken foot.


The Brazilian required assistance after touching down in his homeland, where he will have surgery on the injury, which he sustained last weekend, this Saturday.

He fractured a metatarsal and sprained his ankle during Sunday's 3-0 win over Marseille, and is expected to be out of action for up to three months which means he faces a race to be fit for this summer's World Cup in Russia.

I just hope modric, kroos and Marcelo get fit soon.

After an initial treatment period of three days inline with a strict medical protocol, a joint decision has been taken between the medical staffs of both Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazil national team.


OFFICIAL STATEMENT:

In accordance with the player, it has been decided that Neymar Jr will undergo surgery in Brazil at the end of this week.

He will be operated on by Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar, accompanied by Professor Saillant, representing PSG.

one thing I admire about the lad is that his a fearless defender,. That's what varane lacks, his too soft in marking out the opponent. Hope to see him back in form.

Vinicius Junior to join Real Madrid ahead of the 2017/18 season


Real Madrid directors and coaches are planning for Vinicius Junior to make the move to the Spanish club this summer.


The signing of the Brazilian has already been agreed, for a fee of 45 million euros, but he is unable to move to Europe until he reaches 18 years of age, which he will do on July 12, 2018.

Although some believe he might be better off staying with Flamengo to develop further, Real Madrid are convinced that they have signed a world-class talent and already have maximum faith in him.

Already the teenager has spent a year with the Flamengo first team and he is now showcasing his talent, after a few months of physical adaptation.

Even though some of his skills have provoked anger from opponents and some members of the public, Real Madrid are not worried about this.

What they are worried about is the risk of Vinicius Junior getting injured in Brazilian football.

The plan, then, is for the youngster to move to Madrid in the summer and to work with the first-team squad in preseason, after which a decision will be made on whether he forms part of the senior squad for the 2017/18 season or if he goes out on loan.

If he is loaned out, the intention is for him to go to a European club, not a Brazilian one.
