CrimeBritish Police To Recruit Yoruba-speaking Officers by MixedMan(op): 10:32am On Jul 22, 2015
British Metropolitan Police Service has launched a recruitment programme to employ new officers who can speak Yoruba and other languages.

A total of 14 languages which have a high prevalence in London’s communities have been chosen for what the Met called a month-long pilot recruitment which started on Monday.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the MPS, the move was designed to bring officers into the Met with skills necessary to help the police and engage with London’s diverse communities as effectively as possible.

The statement said in part, “It follows the introduction last year of a London Residency criteria to ensure candidates have a strong link to the capital and an understanding of its diversity and cultures. Candidates who apply to be police constables will be tested in the second language as part of our rigorous selection process.

“The chosen languages are Yoruba (Nigeria), Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Italian, German, Turkish, Greek, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and Bengali.”

The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Bernard Howe, noted that more than 300 languages were spoken in London, the capital of Britain.

“I am committed to providing a police service which looks and feels more like London. We need to recruit and deploy officers with second languages in areas where those languages are spoken. I believe it will help boost confidence, help to solve crime more effectively and support victims and witnesses,” Howe said.

The MPS stated further that it employed around 31,000 officers together with about 13,000 police staff and 2,600 Police Community Support Officers.

“The MPS is also being supported by more than 5,100 volunteer police officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary and its Employer Supported Policing programme. The Metropolitan Police Services covers an area of 620 square miles and a population of 7.2 million.

“For this reason, we are introducing additional language eligibility criteria as a key skill to become a police constable. While our police officers are able to effectively carry out their duties without the ability to speak a second language, a police constable with this skill is an asset in helping both themselves and their colleagues to more effectively engage with the community and deal with everyday policing situations. To apply, you must be able to speak one of the 14 languages below: Yoruba (Nigeria), Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Italian, German, Turkish, Greek, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Sinhali (Sri Lanka), Bengali,” it said.

PoliticsCourt Rules On Suit Challenging Akpabio’s Eligibility Today by MixedMan(op): 10:25am On Jul 22, 2015
The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court will, today, determine whether or not the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio is qualified to be appointed as the Minority Leader of the 8th Senate.

The suit, which was lodged before the court by two members of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from Rivers and Imo states, Alaye Pedro and Dr. Okechukwu Ibeh, respectively, has 18 Senators from the South-South geo-political zone as defendants.

The plaintiffs are praying the court to restrain the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and members of PDP caucus from the South-South in the Senate from appointing the Senate Minority Leader outside the provision of Order 3(2) of Senate Standing Orders 2015 (as amended).
The aforementioned rule of the Senate prohibits the appointment of a first time Senator as a principal officer.

The plaintiffs maintained that whereas PDP is the leading minority party in the Senate and is entitled to produce the Minority Leader, they contended that in line with Order 3(2) of Senate Standing Orders 2015, ranking must be the basis for appointment of such principal officer.
They averred before the court that “ranking ensures that principal officers posses adequate experience and avoids promoting junior over senior,” adding that in zoning the position of the Minority Leader to South-South, PDP take into consideration the ranking of PDP senators from the zone.

The plaintiffs, however, decried that “a clique within the larger PDP caucus in the 8th National Assembly has concluded plans to subvert the mandatory provision of Order 3(20) of the Senate Standing Orders by selecting or appointing the Minority Leader by a procedure in breach of Order 3(2) of the Senate Standing Orders 2015.”

Consequently, they urged the court to intervene by ensuring that the proper procedure was adhered to by the leadership of the Senate with regards to the appointment of Minority Leader.

RomanceWHAT Are The Rewards For Ops by MixedMan(op): 5:01pm On Jul 16, 2015
For so long i have been wondering on this.. and then i decided to let it out because i guess i might not be the only one with this thoughts..

I really think the OPS on this thread Especially the Politics section, romance, crime and family sections do try a whole lot..
these people to me work more than the so called Moderators and supermods if you ask me..
These humble Ops source for News not just news..TRENDING news, organise and post it here to update our fellow nairalanders and they will even be begging the Almighty mods to move it to the front page..

that is what i call SELFLESS SERVICE..because they aint getting paid nor any form of reward in anyway or kind. to my greatest view..these OPS are the one making Nairaland great and there should be like a compensation or kind given to them..

seun i believe pays the MODS and Supermods..he should otherwise find something to give and encourage these OPS. i mean they spend and burn their Megabytes and batteries just to update us..
Thats my opinion..Hope this post wont be REMOVED..

PoliticsTribunals: PDP Lying To Cover Rigging, Says APC by MixedMan(op): 3:48pm On Jul 16, 2015
The All Progressives Congress has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of engaging in “brazen lies” by alleging interference by the security agencies in cases before election petition tribunals.

It says the “lies” are to cover the rigging perpetrated by the former ruling party during the last general elections.

APC described the allegation as “a futile attempt by the PDP to pull the wool over the eyes of Nigerians”.

In a statement in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said not only did the PDP “lied shamelessly” in making the allegation, but also “trying to muddle the waters on the true situation concerning the case before the Rivers State Election Petitions Tribunal – which precipitated the PDP’s
frivolous accusation in the first instance.”

APC explained that the invitation of some officials from the Rivers State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission was prompted by a petition to the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General, DSS, by the
APC that the officials were colluding with the PDP to deny the APC access to key documents used for the last Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

Also contained in the petition, APC said, was the allegation that some directors at the INEC head office in Abuja had been trying to deny the APC access to some documents used for the said elections but domiciled at the Commission’s head office.

This, the party added, was despite that the INEC Chairman had promptly attended to the issue and directed the said
officials to furnish the needed documents.

APC stated that the IG had directed, upon the receipt of the APC petition, that the matter be investigated and that
the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State should be invited.

Those who were named in the APC petition to the security agencies, the statement said, included the Rivers REC, Mrs Gesila Khan; the Administrative Secretary, Mr. Obijuru Royson; Head of Operations Department, Bocco Ekong; and Legal Officer, Fumi Gaffar.

The party said, ”Therefore, the PDP’s wolf crying over a conspiracy it orchestrated with the Rivers INEC to deny the APC access to documents used for the said elections amounts to barefaced lies and a clear attempt at distorting facts.

”These persistent refusal to release the documents is happening despite a valid order from the tribunal and in a clear violation of Section 77 (1) and (2) and other provisions of the Electoral Act.

”In addition, there is also a deliberate effort by the conspirators (Rivers INEC and the PDP) to destroy the documents so as not to allow the APC to have access to them, and then report their loss to the police. One of such cases was filed on June 29 at the Akinima Police Station in the Ahoada West Local Government Area.”

APC believed it had become clear that the PDP, “knowing full well that it had something to hide in the Rivers election, is doing everything possible to sabotage the search for the truth, while at the same time engaging in impudent finger pointing as a strategy to deceive the unsuspecting public”.

PoliticsCameroon Bans Women Face Veil Over Bombings by MixedMan(op): 3:10pm On Jul 16, 2015
Cameroon has banned burqas (women face veil) in the northern part of the country after two women, dressed in the religious garments, blew themselves up last week in a suspected Boko Haram attack, a local governor said on Wednesday.

The twin attacks in Cameroon’s northern town of Fotokol killed at least 13 people, the government said.

Governor of the Far North, Midjiyawa Bakari, said, “I took this measure because of the security situation prevailing in the region.”
