Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday alighted from his vehicle to assist in the rescue of an accident victim.

The victim, Miss Anukam Angela, who was driving alone in a wine Toyota Corolla with number plate EKY 415 CG, at about 8.15am, lost control and rammed into the median of the road along Osborne Road, Ikoyi, before the vehicle somersaulted.

Ambode, who was heading to the office through the direction before the incident occurred, ordered his convoy to stop at the scene so as to enable him to assess the situation as well as help rescue the passengers.

The governor instructed the ambulance attached to his convoy to convey the victim, who was in a state of shock, and could barely move or talk, to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment.

Angela’s sister, Amaka, who was contacted shortly after the crash, said she was treated for minor injuries free and discharged on the order of the governor.

She said the ambulance also conveyed her sister back to her residence at 3, Efosa Ehiedu Close, off Modupe Thomas Estate, Ajah, while the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority assisted in towing the vehicle away from the roadside to prevent traffic gridlock.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, said, “What the governor has done is typical of him. It is indeed a demonstration of his concern to the well-being of every resident and Miss Angela is not an exception.

“He has also, with this act, shown his commitment to an all inclusive approach in protecting the lives and property of citizens in the state.”

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State says he has approved the immediate payment of July salaries to workers ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr.

This is contained in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mallam Imam Imam, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto on Monday.

According to the statement, payment of salaries has commenced for all categories of workers in the state civil service.

It ‎urged workers in the public service to reciprocate the government’s gesture by continuing to render invaluable services to the state.

The statement also appealed to them to use the remaining days of Ramadan to pray for the peace, unity, stability and progress of the state and the country.

“Governor Tambuwal is wishing all the citizens of the state a happy Eid-el-Fitr celebration,’’ it added.

Update:

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted a former Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Stephen Oronsaye, and his co-accused, release from custody pending the hearing of their bail application.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole made the order shortly after the accused persons were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 24 counts of ‎money laundering and fraud charges.

Justice Kolawole, who adjourned the hearing of the bail applications till July 21, ruled that the release granted to the accused persons would only take effect upon filing of written undertakings by defence lawyers assuring that they would produce their clients in court at the next hearing date.

The judge hinged his decision to release the accused persons in the interim on the grounds that the EFCC had not indicated that the accused persons, particularly Oronsaye, had the tendency of absconding from trial.

He had also overruled the request by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Aliyu Yussuf, for the remand of the accused persons in prison.

The judge held that he could not force the accused persons on the EFCC whose counsel contended that there was no space to accommodate them in its custody, ‎but under the principle of “interim judicial reprieve,” the court lacked the power to release the accused persons pending the hearing of the bail applications.

The court has fixed October 28, 29; November 3, 5 as well as December 5 for trial.
