I do not often jump on social media train for stories like this until investigations are concluded but those blaming NMA, or dragging hard working genuine doctors in the Mud, this piece might educate you on the various regulatory bodies.

It is fairly long read but it might save your life or save you an organ.

*This is my first ever post on nairaland I think.

I am licensed as doctor in Canada, the UK and Nigeria.

The Medical and dental council of Nigeria(MDCN) is responsible for registration of doctors in Nigeria -not the NMA. You can find out if a doctor is registered on the MDCN . The MDCN has the legal power to sanction and license doctors.

The NMA is just an association of doctors much like your old student association. it is a voluntary body. It has no legal power to license or sanction a doctor. It has no legal powers to monitor and inspect healthcare facilities

The Ministry of Health(MOH) is the government body saddled with the responsibility of maintaining the healthcare of the citizenry. They are the body empowered to conduct registration, inspection, and licensing of healthcare facilities, they are thebody to fish out quacks and prosecute them accordingly.

This gentleman is not a "DOCTOR", not everyone that owns a hospital is a doctor. He is an average Joe on the street that has opened a clinic in a remote area. He could as well be a smuggler, an armed robber, or a kidnapper- He is just a criminal. it is not the job of the mdcn or the NMA to catch him. There are thousands of them in the country. This is the responsibility of federal and states branches of the ministry of health. the NMA and MDCN should not even be involved as he is not a doctor.

It is important for the citizenry to gather information about their "doctor". The information is there on the internet. You can also alert the MOH if you feel someone parading himself is not a real doctor.
Ask your doctors full names , go online and research the name. For the internet savvy, checked linkedin or facebook.

Good healthcare is not cheap and that very cheap healthcare you are getting might be killing you- if it is too good to be true, it is not true.

Know this and know peace

[quote author=Mindlog post=125825605]I belong to a professional body, the British Psychological Society and I work here in the UK with that membership. As long you are visible, the BPS makes sure you are what you claim to be because they easily track you, employers easily verify from them and if you are not, you have a criminal case to answer in court even if you are a member and have unprofessional conducts against you and if found guilty after investigation, you get deregistered and your name will be publicized on their website.

Because of the high level of quackery in the Nigerian medical sector, the NMA should be smart enough to create an app where Nigerians request the license number of the doctor who is involved in their health issues, once they key the number in, the name, the current picture and the specialty of the doctor etc should pop up as that would go a long way.[/quote

This up here is not accurate and it is misleading. I am licensed as doctor in Canada, the UK and Nigeria.
