Nigerian singer, songwriter, producer and actor Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon, speaks about his lifelong passion for sports, his admiration for Efe Ajagba, the similarities between music and sports, and the need for greater investment in young Nigerian talent in this exclusive interview with Temitayo Oshikoya.

How would you describe your relationship with sports?

Sports was actually my first love, even before music. Growing up, I was very passionate about football, and that passion has never left me. I played football, table tennis and snooker, and I still enjoy playing them today. I have always loved moving, acting, entertaining and challenging myself physically. I honestly do not see myself ever giving that up. If you have followed my journey from the beginning, you will remember my very first music video, Filebe, where I was playing football. That should tell you how deeply sports have always been a part of my life. Music may have become my profession, but sports will always remain one of my greatest passions.

From your perspective, what similarities do you see between the lives of professional footballers and those of musicians in Nigeria?

For me, it is all about love, mutual respect and appreciating greatness. I have always been passionate about sports, so naturally, I connect with athletes who are doing fantastic things in their respective fields. I have great relationships with people like Robert Martinez, Obatala, Ighalo, Lota and several others. Whenever we meet, it is always genuine love and respect. Beyond fame, I believe entertainers and footballers share a lot in common. We both represent our country, entertain millions of people, face enormous expectations and work extremely hard to remain relevant. Whether you are making music or playing football, excellence deserves recognition and respect.

Nigerian footballers like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi have enjoyed success internationally. What does this say about Nigerian talent?

Their success proves that Nigerian talent is limitless. If Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi can compete and excel at the highest international level, it means countless other young Nigerians can achieve the same with the right opportunities, encouragement and support. That is why I strongly believe we should invest in discovering and developing younger talents. A similar story is unfolding in music. Afrobeats has grown into one of the most influential sounds in the world today. When you see international artists, including American rappers, embracing Afrobeats and creating projects influenced by our sound, it tells you how far African music has travelled.

Do you think there should be more collaborations between musicians and the sports industry in Nigeria?

Absolutely! I have always believed there is tremendous power in collaboration. Music and sports are two industries with the ability to connect millions of people, especially young people. Bringing them together creates opportunities for greater visibility, talent discovery, brand partnerships and economic growth. Imagine more collaborations between musicians, football clubs, athletes and sporting organizations. Beyond entertainment, these partnerships could inspire young people, create employment and open emerging talents to bigger audiences. When the music industry and sports work together, everybody benefits. I believe there is enormous potential for music and sports to complement each other, and we should explore those opportunities more actively.

Who is your favourite sports personality, and what do you admire most about them?

I appreciate so many incredible athletes, but right now I would have to say Nigerian heavyweight boxer Efe Ajagba, popularly known as The Silent Roller. I admire his strength, discipline, confidence and determination. He is the kind of fighter who is not afraid. His boxing ability, power and composure make him a serious challenge for anyone in the heavyweight division. What I respect most is his mentality. He keeps working, keeps improving and continues to represent Nigeria proudly on the international stage. I am genuinely rooting for him to reach the very top of heavyweight boxing.

If you were asked to create a song to inspire a Nigerian national team, what message would you want the song to pass across?

My message would be simple: believe in yourself, never give up and remember where you come from. But beyond inspiring the national team, I would also want the song to draw attention to the importance of supporting grassroots talent. Nigeria has so much to offer the world. When it comes to talent, I genuinely believe we have barely scratched the surface. There are extraordinary young athletes in communities across the country who simply need someone to believe in them and give them an opportunity because greatness can come from anywhere.

What advice would you give young people hoping to build successful careers in sports, based on your own journey in the music industry?

My advice is simple: If you are willing to put in the work, you give yourself a real chance to succeed. There are no shortcuts to lasting greatness. Every champion you admire today has made sacrifices that most people will never see. I have learned from my journey in music that talent alone is never enough. You need discipline, consistency, patience and the courage to keep going when things are not working out. Do not allow temporary setbacks to discourage you. Do not compare your journey to someone else's because everybody has a different path.

Nigerian football supporters are famously passionate about their clubs and the Super Eagles. Do you think music and sports have a similar power to unite Nigerians across ethnic, religious and social differences?

Absolutely! In fact, I believe music and sports are two of the most powerful forces bringing Nigerians and Africans together today. When the Super Eagles are playing, nobody is asking whether a player is Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa, or whether they are Christian or Muslim. Everybody just wants Nigeria to win. The same thing happens with music. A good song unites people regardless of their background, language, religion or social status. That is the beauty of music and sports: they bring people together through shared experiences and passions. That is exactly why I believe our government should invest more seriously in both sectors. If national unity is genuinely a priority, these are platforms that naturally bring people together without forcing it. Music and sports have achieved a level of unity that politics continues to struggle to deliver. That alone should tell us how important they are to our society.

If you had the opportunity to work with a Nigerian athlete on a project combining music and sports, who would you be interested in collaborating with, and what would you hope to achieve through the partnership?

Two names immediately come to mind: Victor Osimhen and Efe Ajagba. I have tremendous respect for both athletes because of their work ethic, determination and the sacrifices they have made to reach their respective levels. What I admire most about them is their ability to keep pushing despite adversity. They do not allow challenges to define them. They remain focused, continue working and keep striving for greatness. Those are values I strongly identify with because my journey in music has also been built on persistence, sacrifice and believing in myself even when the odds were against me.

The Rhythm 93.7 FM Lagos resident DJ took to his social media page earlier today, October 26, 2026, to share a heartfelt birthday tribute to his mother, marking a swift turn from mourning to celebration within the same family.

The celebration comes barely 72 hours after the funeral rites of his beloved grandmother, Late Ezinne Maria Eruru Nwachi Afagwu (Nee Okwudei), who was laid to rest at the remarkable age of 108 years.

It was a celebration of a fulfilled life as popular Nigerian disc jockey, Benedict Afagwu, famously known as DJ Humility, laid his beloved grandmother, Late Ezinne Maria Eruru Nwachi Afagwu (Nee Okwudei), to rest at the remarkable age of 108 years.

The funeral rites, according to the Order of Funeral Mass booklet, were held on Friday, 23rd October, 2026, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Akumazi-Umuocha, by 10:00am prompt, preceded by a Requiem Mass in her honour in her Lagos parish.

But behind the celebration is a story of pain, resilience and a family tragedy that shaped the last 20 years of Mama's life.

Late Ezinne Maria was the mother of Late ASP Samuel Afagwu, who served as the O.C. Transport Officer of Area C Police Command, Surulere.

According to the family, the tragic incident occurred on October 5th, 2005, following a clash between officers of the Nigerian Police and Nigerian soldiers. The family recounted that ASP Afagwu was pushed from upstairs during the altercation and was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, where he later died on October 29th, 2005.

DJ Humility and his family lived in the same Surulere Police Barracks, Area C Command, before Ojuelegba, where he was born and brought up.

Following his death, the family disclosed that Barr. Festus Keyamo, now a Minister in the Tinubu administration, was DJ Humility's lawyer in the matter. They were however advised by his then-boss, Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce, CEO of Silverbird TV, to let go of the case. At the time, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was Governor of Lagos State while Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was President.

The family stated that no compensation has been paid till date after the tragedy — an incident that nearly claimed the life of Late Ezinne Maria herself.
"This tragedy nearly killed her mother then, and ever since then she has been managing her health till she gave up the ghost," the family source said.
Despite the trauma, Late Ezinne Maria lived on to become a symbol of strength and faith, reaching 108 years.

Her grandson, DJ Humility, has risen from humble beginnings to become one of Nigeria's most respected veteran DJs — resident DJ at Rhythm 93.7 FM Lagos, pioneer of hyping in Nigerian nightlife, and founder of Classic DJs and H. Records.

Nigerian singer Jaywon has released a new single, Jungle Boy ‘, under the Bantu Muntu campaign of independent African music and entertainment company Shake It, Africa.

The Afro-pop record, released on Thursday, October 15, explores resilience, ambition, and the challenges of pursuing success despite adversity.

According to the label, the song blends soulful melodies with contemporary Afro-pop production to tell the story of striving for a better life.


The release is part of the second phase of the Bantu Muntu campaign, a cross-continental music initiative designed to connect artistes and sounds from across Africa.

Founded by musician Jon Muq and music executive Kevin Wommack, Shake It Africa aims to promote African music, visual arts, and live entertainment to audiences across Africa, the United States, and Europe.


Speaking on the project, Muq, the company’s co-founder, lead A&R and creative director, said the campaign was designed to showcase the diversity of African music while allowing artistes to retain their individual identities.


He described Jaywon’s contribution as reflecting experience, melody and a story of resilience from Nigeria.

Jungle Boy is one of the songs leading to the release of the 10-track Bantu Muntu compilation, scheduled for February 12, 2027. The project will feature artistes from across the continent, focusing on regional sounds, collaboration, and international exposure.

The campaign is expected to continue with a Shake It Africa European showcase in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on March 27, 2027.

Shake It Africa said the initiative is part of its broader effort to build connections between African artistes and audiences in their home countries, the diaspora and international markets.

Anigbogu Stephnora Nkechi was born into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Anigbogu. She is of Igbo origin and of the Christian faith.

She had her primary and secondary education at Salama Primary School and Salama High School, Jos, graduating in 2001 and 2007 respectively. From an early age, she developed a keen interest in fashion, craftsmanship and entrepreneurship - interests that would later define her career path.

Emmanuel Chinedum Okonkwo, popularly known as Mr Aloy, is a Nigerian comedian, Nollywood actor, content creator, filmmaker, brand influencer and entrepreneur. He is widely recognized for his signature gateman role as "Aloy" (Aloysius) in the web series "My Kids and I" . He is the CEO of Mr. Aloy Studio and Memshack Medics.

Early Life & Background
Mr Aloy hails from Uli in Ihiala LGA, Anambra State, Nigeria, and is Igbo by tribe. He was born on May 15 into a Christian family of three. He lost his mother at a tender age and was raised by his mother's sister / relatives.

His stage name "Mr Aloy" was inspired by his grandmother's husband.

Education
He had his primary school education in Ihiala, Anambra State. In 2007, he applied to study Medical Laboratory Technology at Anambra State College of Health Technology, where he graduated as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician.

Career Journey

1. Medical Career to Business:
Before entertainment, he worked briefly in the medical field. In 2008, he relocated to Lagos. He started a business importing medical laboratory equipment with N300,000 initially meant for a visa to Europe. The business, Memshack Medics, started with selling lab equipment and expanded into importation of all medical equipment.

2. Nollywood Career:
His passion for entertainment started in church, where he was head of the drama department at Christ Embassy, and his pastor encouraged him to commercialize his talent. He moved to Lagos and began attending auditions in Surulere.

His first Nollywood movie was in 2011 titled "Destruction Instinct" where he played a corrupt policeman. He revealed he worked in the industry for more than two years before earning his first N2,000 and paid N3,000 just to be auditioned.

His breakthrough came with the web series "My Kids and I" where he played the gateman, Mr. Aloy. He has produced movies like Tinta (his first self-produced series in 2012 which aired on Galaxy TV), Amazing Sisters, Dr General Clinic, Once Upon A Time In Obudu, Calabar Carnival, Wisdom Of The Kids, and many others. He has acted alongside stars like Bolanle Ninalowo, Funke Akindele, Nkem Owoh (who he cites as inspiration) and Bishop Umeh.

3. Content Creation / Comedy Empire:
With skit-making taking over, he transitioned into digital comedy. He initially started with "bumbum and bosom" content but his Facebook page was flagged and monetization removed. He then pivoted to family-value, impactful and moral lessons — reminding people to care for parents, etc. — which went viral.

Today, his page "Emma Chinedum Comedy" has over 9 million followers on Facebook, with strong presence on YouTube 1m + subscribers), Instagram @mraloy1 and TikTok. He runs a full production team with writers and cast. He has played the gateman role over 20 times.
