Breaking News : MASSOB Leader’s Supporters Clash With SSS Posted by admin on 2007/7/5 16:47:36 (187 reads) By Nnamdi Felix /Abuja Hell was let loose this morning at the Federal High Court, Abuja as the members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) clashed with gun-wielding operatives of the State Security Service (SSS). The MASSOB members who beat the security operatives’ blockades at the gate of the court premises chanted war songs and praised their leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, who was in court for the continuation of his trial. As soon as Uwazuruike emerged from the court room, the MASSOB members raised the tempo of their praise singing and as Uwazuruike made to acknowledge the cheers of his supporters, the security operatives who were still angry with the number of the MASSOB elements who found their way into the court premises, would not have any of it. They forcefully tried to bundle the MASSOB leader into the waiting Nassarawa State prison vehicle. This provoked his supporters and prompted them into action to defend their leader. Not a few of the security operatives and the MASSOB elements as well, left with swollen and bruised faces. At this point, efforts of the leader of the SSS team to shield cameramen from taking shots collapsed as the supporters urged the pressmen to capture the event and relay it to Nigerians. A security official with the Prisons Armed Unit threatened to shoot Uwazuruike if his people will not let go of one of their members who was being held by the supporters. Festus Keyamo, who entered appearance for Uwazuruike during the court proceedings, had informed the court about the death of Mrs. Monica Uwazuruike, the MASSOB leader’s mother, who is yet to be buried as her only surviving son, Ralph, is still in detention. He sought for a short adjournment to enable him file a new application for bail for the MASSOB leader in the light of the latest development. Justice Murtala-Nyako, the presiding judge, adjourned hearing till 17 July 2007 after condoling the MASSOB leader over the death of his mother. Meanwhile, operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) this morning invaded the venue of a press conference organised by Igbo National Council. The press briefing was taking place in Enugu when the security agents stormed the venue and disrupted it. Sources at the venue of the briefing said the SSS operatives insisted on taking officials of the council away to their office in Enugu. The operatives were still laying siege to the venue of the briefing at the time of filing this report. The briefing was organised to address the plight of the Igbo people, particularly their marginalisation and the continued detention of Ralph Uwazuruike, the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). |

Former Security Boss Raises Alarm Over Unauthorised Arms In Imo By Ben Duru Correspondent, Owerri Former Special Adviser to the Imo State Government on Security Matters, Chief Zeek-Martins Nnadozie has decried the amount of arms and ammunition in the hands of thugs hired by politicians during the last general election. He insisted that some of the hoodlums armed with the weapons during the period, were using them for different purposes, because their original use had been overtaken by events. Speaking with newsmen in Owerri, Imo State, he maintained that the number of arms and ammunition imported into the state for the prosecution of the various elections was unimaginable. "I have always said that election is not a do-or-die affair and people must not embark on such things that would later boomerang on them because they want to win an election at all costs," he said. The former security boss maintained that since the elections had come and gone, those who had the weapons handed over to them were now beginning to terrorise the state with the same weapon and making life uneasy for the populace. He advised that since the politicians that bought and armed the thugs were still around, they should go back to the thugs and reclaim the weapons before they are used to wreck more havoc. According to him the issue of security while he was at the helm of affairs in the state, was always treated with the rapt attention adding that it was for this reason that the incidence of armed robbery and other nefarious crimes were reduced to a manageable level at the period. He stressed that not less than 400 armed robbery suspects were apprehended and handed over to the police during the period, which was to ensure that the people slept with their two eyes closed. "What we did during the period under review is that I expect that the present administration would do. We made sure that we gave the issue of security the attention it deserved. The governor was willing and gave us attention and that was why we succeeded," he said adding that it was as a result of the determination to stamp out criminalities in the state that saw the purchase of large scale equipment, ranging from vehicles to communication gadgets for the police and other security agencies. Nnadozie, who is gunning for chairmanship of Ehime Mbano Local Government Area in the coming council election, debunked allegation that the current government in the state was slow, arguing that it was only to put processes in place for developments that would shock the people. |
By Chukwujekwu Ilozue Reporter, Onitsha Anambra State Commander of Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Ibrahim Abdul, on Monday paraded seven persons arrested for possession of over 200 kilograms of Indian Hemp in Onitsha. He vowed that his agency would work with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to rid the state and Onitsha in particular of drug peddlers. Abdul, who said that the two sister agencies have been collaborating to reduce the incidence of drug peddling and abuse in the state, expressed worry that Indian Hemp business was going on unchallenged at the Onitsha Bridge Head Drug Market, closed down recently by NAFDAC. He said that three of the seven suspects were arrested within one month he took over the mantle of leadership of the agency. He named the suspects as Emmanuel Ogwuche, found with 83.9kg of Indian hemp, Chigozie Okeke, 12.7kg and Vincent Nwosu 4kg, adding that his team, which replaced the one flushed out in the city by its headquarters would give Onitsha a face-lift. Abdul assured that he would not only apprehend the couriers, but the barons who were the real offenders in the illicit trade, arguing that it was abnormality to arrest the couriers without their suppliers. Stating that the state, especially Onitsha was considered as a volatile place in drug trafficking business, which accounted for the current initiative, he lamented a situation where Nigeria’s productive population were involved in drug trafficking, stressing that drug trafficking and abuse were the most dangerous trends militating the world after financial crime and terrorism. Challenging Nigerians to get involved in the campaign against drug trafficking and abuse, he said that the fight is a collective one, which should involve everybody. |
Robber Shoots Man,Snatches N15, 000 By Chukwujekwu Ilozue,Reporter, Onitsha A middle aged man, whose name could not be ascertained, narrowly escaped death in Onitsha on Wednesday afternoon after he was shot twice by a suspected armed robber operating on a motorcycle along the old market road. The incident occurred opposite No. 65 Old Market Road, near the Onitsha General Post Office. Eye witnesses said that the man was on a motorcycle when suddenly two men also on another motorcycle rode behind him and all of a sudden one of them shot the passenger of the motorcycle in front of him on the legs. The victim’s motorcycle then fell into a gutter. The suspected robber was said to have disembarked from his own motorcycle and shot his victim a second time, before stretching out his hand and took away a black cellophane bag which fell off the victim’s hands. Immediately after the shooting, the robber, in a commando-like fashion, mounted the motorcycle that brought him in font of the usually crowded Onitsha General Post Office and sped away. The victim of the attack later disclosed to those who came to sympathise with him that he had about N15, 000 in the cellophane bag that was snatched by the robber. Incidentally, the Anambra State House of Assembly two days ago passed a resolution urging the state governor, Peter Obi, to do something about the security situation in the state. The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Onitsha North I Constituency, Ejiofor F.A. Egwuatu, decrying the security situation in Onitsha in particular and the state in general. The House in the resolution asked Obi to convene a meeting of all security agencies in the state with a view to checking the deteriorating security situation in the state. |

Senegal Seizes Two Tons of Cocaine in Record Drug Bust By Naomi Schwarz Dakar 02 July 2007 http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-07-02-voa44.cfm Police in Senegal are investigating the largest ever drug bust in the West African nation. Several tons of cocaine have been seized and four South Americans and three Senegalese arrested in the seaside region of Mbour. Naomi Schwarz has more from Dakar. More than two tons of cocaine have been seized by Senegalese police since last Wednesday, in the biggest drug bust in the county's history. The police have also arrested seven men, including four foreigners, in connection with the drugs. Para-military police commander Moussa Fall says these seizures and arrests are the product of ongoing investigations in the fight against drug trafficking. He says the men arrested had long been under surveillance, but the discovery of more than a ton of cocaine on a boat near the seaside city of Mbour gave police the hard proof they needed to make the arrests. The boat was deserted when police boarded, and had apparently suffered from mechanical difficulties. The arrested men were found in possession of Kalashnikov and Beretta rifles, a satellite navigation device, and foreign and local currency. Information from the first three men arrested led to the discovery of a second trove of more than a ton of cocaine, stashed in a private home. Fall says the arrests and seizures strike a strong blow to drug traffickers in West Africa. He says he thinks this will discourage others involved in the drug trade. But he says investigations are ongoing and he expects a long road before Senegal can consider the fight against drug trafficking over. Anti-drug organizations, such as the United States Drug Enforcement Agency have said that West Africa has more and more become a transit point for drugs from South America, en route to Europe. Governments struggling in underdeveloped countries do not have the capacity to effectively patrol their coastlines and drug traffickers are increasingly taking advantage. |
