EducationRe: OAU Graduate Accused Of Charging Student N370,000 Interest On N300,000 Loan, Spa by Monzabets(op): 7:32am
To be honest, the lender was just trying to take advantage of the borrower's predicament. That is the truth. Why must the interest be that outrageous?
EducationOAU Graduate Accused Of Charging Student N370,000 Interest On N300,000 Loan, Spa by Monzabets(op): 6:41pm On Jun 05
A fresh controversy has erupted on social media after an Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) graduate, identified as Abdulmalik Ogundiran, was accused of imposing what many have described as an outrageous interest charge on a student loan.

According to reports, the student reportedly borrowed N300,000 from Ogundiran with an agreement to repay N670,000, effectively attracting an interest charge of N370,000.

The matter gained public attention after the borrower allegedly complained about the loan terms and the pressure surrounding repayment. Rather than showing sympathy, the lender was accused of dismissing the student's concerns and allegedly attempting to justify the controversial arrangement.

The development has generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the ethics of charging interest that exceeds the principal amount borrowed. Critics argue that such loan arrangements take advantage of financially vulnerable students who may already be struggling with tuition fees, accommodation costs, and other academic expenses.

Others, however, insist that adults are responsible for agreements they willingly enter into and that borrowers should carefully read and understand loan terms before accepting financial assistance.

The controversy comes at a time when concerns about student financing and access to affordable credit are growing across Nigeria. Many students continue to rely on private lenders, cooperative societies, and digital loan platforms to survive rising educational and living expenses.

While some social media users have called for regulatory scrutiny of informal lending practices, others believe the case serves as a lesson on the importance of financial literacy and responsible borrowing.

As discussions continue online, the incident has once again raised important questions about the balance between profit-making and ethical lending practices, especially when students are involved.

What's your take?

Should a lender be allowed to charge N370,000 interest on a N300,000 loan if both parties agreed to the terms, or do you think such agreements amount to exploitation of financially vulnerable students?
CrimePolice Foil Kidnap Attempt On Couple, Recover AK-47 Rifle In Abuja Community by Monzabets(op): 6:25pm On Jun 05
Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have successfully foiled an attempted abduction of a couple in Abuja and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a swift security operation in the Byazhin area of the nation's capital.

According to reports, the incident occurred around the Redeemed Church area of Byazhin near Paze Hills when armed criminals attempted to abduct the victims.

Upon receiving a distress call, police operatives immediately mobilized to the scene and engaged the suspects in a gun battle that lasted for about 30 minutes. The swift response by security personnel forced the kidnappers to abandon their mission and flee.

During the operation, officers recovered one AK-47 rifle along with other incriminating items believed to have been used by the criminal gang. Efforts are currently underway to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The FCT Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities within their communities.

The successful operation is being seen as another significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes in the Federal Capital Territory.

What do you think about the increasing cases of kidnapping in Abuja despite the presence of security agencies?

Major Shamsudeen Sani, who has been serving with the army in the Northeast for several months, has been detained and denied the right to see his two wives and his children.

The only “crime” he committed was withdrawing his soldiers from the battlefield at a time when he had urgently requested reinforcement troops and emergency equipment but received none while they were locked in combat with ISWAP fighters.

He ordered his men to pull back after realizing the enemy was about to overpower them.

Please house, my sister has just been offered admission to study sociology. She's currently confused on whether to accept the admission or forfeit it and seat for JAMB again considering the Nigerian job market after graduation.

‎I have already adviced her to accept the admission, try to graduate with at least 2nd class upper division and probably go for her master's degree after graduation.

‎Sociology graduates in the house, how has your experience been since graduation? Is it advisable to study this course for BSc. in Naija and further in a related field for postgraduate studies?

‎Please, kindly give your advice on this. Your candid advice will be highly appreciated.

Nairaland GeneralLagos Has New Speed Cameras. Here’s What Motorists Should Know by Monzabets(op): 4:34pm On Jan 16
If you drive in Lagos, this one is for you.
The state has started rolling out new speed cameras, and yes they’re very much active.

Before you panic or start slamming brakes every five seconds, let’s break it down in simple terms

What’s the deal?
These speed cameras are designed to catch over-speeding, not to “set traps” for drivers. The goal is safer roads, fewer accidents, and less of that reckless speeding we all complain about… until it’s time to slow down.

Where are they?
They’re being installed on major highways and busy roads across Lagos places where speeding has caused serious accidents in the past. So if you’re flying on those long stretches, it’s time to ease off.

How do they work?
The cameras automatically detect your speed.
Go beyond the limit ➝ camera snaps ➝ plate number captured ➝ fine issued.
No argument, no begging, no “Oga abeg”.

Will you be notified?
Yes. Offenders will be contacted through official channels, not random WhatsApp messages. If it didn’t come from the right authority, be careful.

What should drivers do now?
✅Know the speed limits
✅Drive calmly (this is Lagos, you’ll still get there later anyway)
✅Make sure your plate number is clear and correct
✅Stop relying on luck, technology has entered the chat

At the end of the day, this isn’t about punishment, it’s about keeping lives safe. Fewer crashes, fewer hospital visits, fewer “sad news” posts.

What do you think about the new speed cameras? Good move or too harsh? Let’s talk in the comments 👇
EducationHenna Tattoos = No Exam: Jamb’s Finger Fail Alert! by Monzabets(op): 12:29pm On Jan 16
Abeg, let’s talk because this one is silently ruining exam days.

If you’re planning to write JAMB and you love henna, brown tattoos, black dye, or finger designs, please pause first.
That fine design might be the exact reason you won’t enter the exam hall.

Yes. You read that right.

Henna on your fingers = biometric failure = NO EXAM.
No story. No appeal. No “please sir”.

JAMB uses fingerprint biometrics, not vibes, not fine girl privilege.
Once the machine can’t read your fingerprint clearly, that’s the end of the road for that day.

And before someone says “But it’s just small”
That “small” is enough to confuse the scanner.

People have already been sent home because of:

- Henna designs on fingers

- Black dye on nails

- Tattoo ink around the fingerprint area

- Even cracked or covered fingertips

Imagine preparing for months, paying money, reading overnight… then henna disqualifies you at the gate.
Painful? Very.

What’s worse is that invigilators can’t help you, even if they want to.
If your finger no read, your exam no happen. Simple.

So if you’re writing JAMB soon:

- Avoid henna weeks before the exam

- Keep your fingers clean and natural

- No nail polish, no dye, no tattoo around fingertips

- Moisturize, but don’t cover your fingers with anything strange

Your exam is more important than any temporary design.
That henna can wait. JAMB will not wait for you.

Please tell your sisters, cousins, friends, neighbours, everybody.
This thing has caused unnecessary tears before.

I just say make i give this update to avoid "hard I know".

Over to the house. Have you seen anyone sent back because of henna before?
Or are you just finding out now?

I repeat, do wait for the registration to start before correcting the discrepancies or mismatch in your name.
EducationNo Name Changes Allowed: JAMB Crushes 2026 Dreams! by Monzabets(op): 12:04pm On Jan 16
Guys, gather here first.

If you’re planning to write JAMB 2026 and you’ve been telling yourself “I’ll just fix the name later”, please sit down and read this with both eyes open.

JAMB has said NO MORE NAME CHANGES.
Not today. Not tomorrow. Not after admission.
Once you register, that name is final.

And honestly? A lot of 2026 dreams are shaking already.

Imagine writing JAMB, scoring high, getting admission… only to be told “Sorry, your name doesn’t match.”
Painful doesn’t even start to describe it.

This one is serious because:

- If your NIN name is wrong

- If your WAEC/NECO name is different

- If you used a nickname or missing surname

- If your birth certificate carries another spelling

You’re already on thin ice.

Before, people would just go to CBT centre and say “Oga help me change am later.”
That era has officially ended.

JAMB now pulls your data directly from NIN, and whatever name appears there is what you’ll use from registration till graduation. No edits. No mercy.

What makes it worse? Some schools are already rejecting candidates over one missing letter.
Imagine “Chinedu” vs “Chinedum”. That’s how careers get delayed for one full year.

So if you’re eyeing 2026:

Go and check your NIN slip now

Compare it with your WAEC/NECO result

Make sure your surname, middle name, spelling and order all match perfectly

Don’t wait until registration week when everywhere is crowded and panic is flying around like mosquito.

This thing is not a joke.
People are already crying for 2025.
2026 candidates, please learn from it.

Better to fix your name now than to fix heartbreak later.

Over to you guys. Have you checked your name already?
Or are you just hearing this today?
EducationRe: Please I Need Advice On Changing Course In University by Monzabets(m): 8:10am On Jan 14
Xoft16:
Good day everyone.

Please I was offered admission to study Biology but I want to change to Nursing.

Is it possible after 100 level?

I’ll appreciate advice from anyone with experience.

Thank you.
Yes, it’s possible, but it’s not guaranteed, and it depends on the school’s policy.
In most Nigerian universities, Nursing is a highly competitive and professional course, so internal change of course is usually allowed only if there’s available quota and you meet very strong requirements.
Typically, you must:
– Finish 100 level with a very high CGPA (often 4.0+ or close)
– Have the correct O’Level subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English)
– Sometimes write an internal screening or interview
Some schools do not allow transfer into Nursing at all, even from related courses like Biology, while a few allow it under strict conditions.
My honest advice: Resume Biology, do extremely well in 100 level, and confirm directly from your school’s academic affairs or Nursing department as early as possible. Also consider applying for change of course through JAMB if the opportunity comes.
If Nursing is your ultimate goal, keep a Plan B, because many students try and only a few succeed.
EducationRe: Education In Russia For Nigerian Students: Opportunities, Support & Partnership by Monzabets(m): 5:27pm On Jan 13

‎Russian education looks good for many Nigerians now.
‎It’s cheaper than UK or US. Tuition around $1,500–$7,000 per year, living cost low, and Russia gives more scholarships to Africans (over 220 for Nigerians in 2025).

‎Good side of it that I like:
‎- Strong courses in IT, medicine, and engineering
‎- Many scholarships pay tuition + small money
‎- Good quality education in these fields

‎Problems people talk about:
‎- Must learn Russian first (most classes in Russian)
‎- Very cold weather
‎- Hard to adjust to culture and food
‎- Some worry about safety because of Ukraine war
‎- Degree may not be easy to use back in Nigeria

‎Still, many Nigerians are studying there and like it, especially for IT and medicine.

‎I’d like to hear your real experience on:
‎- How easy is admission in smaller cities?
‎- Are there IT jobs for foreigners in Russia?

‎Any tips for surviving the cold?

‎Thanks!
EducationRe: Extend NELFUND Loans To Private Unis Now! Vc's Urgent Call; Agree Or Disagree? by Monzabets(op): 4:49pm On Jan 13

EducationExtend NELFUND Loans To Private Unis Now! Vc's Urgent Call; Agree Or Disagree? by Monzabets(op): 12:54pm On Jan 13
Hey folks, let's talk about something that's stirring up a lot of talk in Nigeria's education scene right now. You know how student loans can be a game-changer for folks chasing higher education? Well, there's this fresh call from a university boss to make those loans available to more students, specifically, those in private universities. The title says it all: "Extend NELFUND Loans to Private Unis Now! VC's Urgent Call; Agree or Disagree?" I'm gonna break it down for you in plain talk, based on what's actually happening out there.

First off, what's NELFUND anyway? It's short for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, a government setup that kicked off in 2024 under President Bola Tinubu. The idea is simple; give interest-free loans to Nigerian students so they can pay for tuition, books, and even living costs without stressing their families too much.

It's run by a team led by Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr, and it's all about opening doors to college or uni for people who might otherwise drop out due to money woes. Sounds great, right? But here's the catch; right now, these loans are only for students in public schools, like federal and state universities or polytechnics. Private unis? Not yet on the list.

That brings us to the urgent call. Just today, January 12, 2026, Prof. Samuel Bandele, the Vice-Chancellor of Anchor University in Lagos, put out a statement pushing the government to change that. He said something like, "Hey, students in private schools are Nigerians too, their parents pay taxes and help build the country. Excluding them is like doing the nation a disservice."

He pointed out that while private schools handle their own buildings and stuff, the government could step in with loans or scholarships to support students and research.

Bandele even praised the loan program for already helping tons of kids in public schools whose families couldn't afford fees, but he wants it fair for everyone. This isn't the first time someone's raised this issue. Back in October 2025, the VC of Bowen University, Prof. Jonathan Babalola, made a similar plea.

Now, why are private unis left out in the first place? From what Sawyerr has explained, it's all about priorities. Nigeria has a huge young population of over 70% under 35 and not enough cash to go around.

Public schools are cheaper, and that's where most low-income families send their kids. Private ones often cost more, so the thinking is that folks who choose them might not need the help as badly. Plus, there's limited data on who's really struggling financially in private setups, and the fund's starting small to make sure it works.

But Sawyerr has said this exclusion is temporary, they plan to expand to private schools once there's more funding and the laws get tweaked, maybe as soon as 2028.

Okay, let's weigh in on the agree or disagree part, because that's where it gets interesting. On the "agree" side, extending the loans makes sense for fairness. Private universities help take the pressure off public ones by admitting more students overall. Not every kid in a private school comes from a rich family, some get scholarships or their parents scrape by, and midway hardships happen. Plus, more educated Nigerians means better growth for the whole country, right? Bandele's point about taxpayers deserving equal perks hits home for a lot of people.

On the flip side, some folks disagree because resources are tight. Why spread the money thin when public schools are already underfunded and serve the neediest? Private fees can be sky-high, so loans there might end up bigger and harder to manage.

Critics like ASUU (the lecturers' union) even say the whole loan thing should be grants instead, not debts that could trap grads in tough spots later. And honestly, with unemployment high, repaying loans isn't always easy.

So, what do you think? Should NELFUND open up to private unis sooner rather than later, or stick to building up the public side first? It's a tough one, but chats like this could push for real changes. If you're a student or parent in Lagos or anywhere, drop your thoughts maybe share your own story. Education's for everyone, after all!
EducationScoring High In JAMB Is No Longer A Guarantee For Admission: Here’s The Hard Tr by Monzabets(op): 9:33am On Jan 13
Every year, thousands of candidates score high in JAMB and still don’t get admission.
And every year, the same question comes up: “How did this happen?”

The uncomfortable truth is this:

A high JAMB score alone is no longer enough.
Many candidates still think admission works like it did years ago. It doesn’t.

Today, admission is affected by things people often ignore, such as:
-Wrong subject combination
-O’level deficiencies
--Poor Post-UTME performance
-Choosing highly competitive courses without a backup
-Applying late or missing screening entirely

I’ve seen candidates with 270+ miss admission, while others with much lower scores got in, not because they were lucky, but because they understood the process better.
Cut-off marks are just the starting point, not the finish line.

Another issue is misinformation. Many students rely on assumptions, rumours, or outdated advice, then get shocked when things don’t work out.

If we’re being honest, a lot of admission problems today are not caused by JAMB itself, but by lack of proper guidance.
Until candidates start paying attention to the full admission process, not just JAMB score, this story will keep repeating every year.

EducationRe: Ogun SUBEB Champions Phonics Training For Teachers by Monzabets(m): 3:17am On Jan 13
This is a very welcome move.

Phonics really makes a difference at the primary level, especially for pupils who struggle with reading and pronunciation. Once children understand sounds early, it becomes easier for them to read, write, and even participate confidently in class.

I just hope it goes beyond a one-day training. Continuous support, follow-up, and simple teaching aids will matter a lot in how effective this becomes in real classrooms.

If properly sustained, programmes like this can greatly improve literacy outcomes in public schools.

EducationRe: My First-semester Review Of The MBA Program At Ahmadu Bello University (distance by Monzabets(m): 2:07am On Jan 13
This is a very real and honest review. Thanks for putting it out there.

The painful part is that most of these issues are avoidable, poor communication, last-minute exam center changes, and unnecessary stress for working professionals. For a distance MBA, that shouldn’t be happening at all.

That “5/5 is for God” mindset in 2025 is wild, especially at MBA level. Assessment should motivate, not discourage.

Your toxic relationship analogy nailed it. The flexibility is nice, but the stress seems to cancel it out. Hopefully the school actually listens to feedback like this and fixes these gaps.

Appreciate the transparency. This will definitely help people thinking of the program.
Education10 Best Fully Funded Canadian Scholarships For Nigerian Students by Monzabets(op): 2:10pm On Mar 06, 2024
Studying in Canada through scholarships can greatly benefit Nigerians in various ways.

Firstly, Canadian universities are renowned for their high quality of education, providing students with access to world-class facilities, faculty, and research opportunities.

By securing scholarships, Nigerian students can alleviate the financial burden associated with studying abroad, including tuition fees, living expenses, and other related costs. This financial relief enables students to focus on their academics and fully engage in the university experience, leading to enhanced learning outcomes.

Additionally, studying in Canada offers the opportunity for cultural exchange and exposure to diverse perspectives, which can broaden students' worldview and enhance their intercultural communication skills.

Furthermore, obtaining a degree from a Canadian institution through scholarships can significantly enhance a student's career prospects, as Canadian degrees are internationally recognized and respected by employers worldwide.

For this reason, I have compiled a list of the best Canadian scholarship programs that are open to Nigerians.

Some of these scholarships include:

1. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

2. Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program (OGS)

3. Lester B. Pearson International Scholarships

4. University of Winnipeg President’s Scholarship for World Leaders

5. University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarships

EducationWAEC Result Upgrade: Bitter Truth No One Has Told You About It by Monzabets(op): 2:14pm On Mar 05, 2024
Dear Nairalanders,

I would like to provide some valuable information regarding the legitimacy of WAEC result upgrades. It is important to understand that engaging in such activities is a scam and should be avoided.

While failing your WAEC exams may seem disheartening, resorting to result upgrades or seeking out dubious websites for assistance will only result in losing your hard-earned money to fraudsters.

It is unfortunate that some individuals falsely claim to be WAEC officials and exploit unsuspecting candidates by offering to upgrade their results. These fraudsters assert that they have access to the WAEC result database and can help candidates improve their grades.

However, I must emphasize that attempting a WAEC result upgrade will only worsen your situation. Even the official WAEC Nigeria website has issued warnings about this.

The fraudsters employ various formats to deceive individuals, such as testimonials thanking someone named Mr. Johnson for successfully upgrading their results. These tactics are designed to manipulate and extort money from vulnerable candidates.

Here are the reasons why you should not pursue a WAEC result upgrade:

1. It is a scam and does not work.
2. You will inevitably lose your money.
3. Engaging in such activities can lead to legal consequences, including possible imprisonment.
4. Discovering that the upgrade was unsuccessful can lead to depression and further distress.

In a nutshell, I strongly advise against pursuing a WAEC result upgrade as it can have devastating consequences. It is crucial to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.

Thank you for your attention.
