Johnwills: The cells are connected in series so as to achieve 12v. So the combined resistance is just the sum not reciprocal. I know that voltage is constant.

Johnwills: Eight dry Leclanché cell of 1.5v each amounts to 12v. A normal car battery is 12v. My question is: why can't we use the eight dry leclanché cells to start the engine of a car since it is equivalent to 12v?

ythe internal resistance produced in d dry cells is more dan dat which is produced in the car battery(accumulator),the accumulator thus gives a larger current which is needed to start the car
