The newly appointed commander of Iran's elite Quds Force said the United States killed his predecessor, Qassem Soleimani, "in a cowardly way" and promised to "hit his enemy in a manly fashion".
Esmail Qaani made the remarks on Monday at an introduction ceremony held for him by top Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) commanders to mark the formal beginning of his tenure.
"They [US] hit him [Soleimani] in a cowardly way, but with God's grace and through endeavours of freedom-seekers around the world who want vengeance over his blood, we will hit his enemy in a manly fashion," he said.
Soleimani's assassination in a US air strike in Baghdad on January 3 pushed the US and Iran to the brink of war, but fears of an all-out conflict eased when retaliatory Iranian strikes against US targets in Iraq on January 8 concluded without any fatalities.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei has since called for the expulsion of all American troops from the Middle East.
IRGC
The Quds Force is part of the 125,000-strong IRGC, a paramilitary organisation that answers only to Khamenei.
IRGC oversees Iran's ballistic missile programme, has its naval forces shadow the US Navy in the Gulf, and includes an all-volunteer Basij force.
Under Soleimani, the Quds Force helped boost Iranian influence across the Middle East by building up a vast network of proxies.

In Syria, the unit played a key role in shoring up support for embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad after the country descended into war in 2011.
It also armed and trained militias that helped defeat the armed group ISIL (ISIS) in both Syria and Iraq.
Khamenei, while announcing Qaani's appointment, said the Quds Force's new chief was "among the most prominent IRGC commanders" during the 1980-1988 war between Iran and Iraq, adding the unit under the veteran soldier will follow an "identical" strategy to that pursued by Soleimani.
At the slain commander's funeral days later, Qaani, 62, pledged to continue on his predecessor's path "with the same force" saying his assassination "will be reciprocated in several steps by removing the US from the region".

Qaani's tenure
Born in the late 1950s in the city of Mashhad in northeast Iran, Qaani joined the IRGC in 1980, a few months before Iraqi forces invaded western Iran, triggering a bloody eight-year war that killed about one million people.
Soon after the war, Qaani was appointed as deputy chief of the IRGC's ground forces.
Although it is unclear when Qaani joined the Quds Force, Iran's state news agency IRNA said he was appointed as the unit's deputy in 1997, the same year that Soleimani was named its commander.
With a clear division of labour and maintaining geographically distinct spheres of influence, Soleimani and Qaani together played a strategic role in expanding Iran's influence in neighbouring nations.
In the few public statements Qaani has made, he slammed the United States and Israel and said in a 2017 article that US President Donald Trump's "threats against Iran will damage America".
In 2012, the US sanctioned Qaani citing his role in financial disbursements to the Quds Force's "elements in Africa" and other "terrorist groups".

Donald Trump could order airstrikes on Iran from the British overseas territory of Diego Garcia without asking for permission from the UK government, Downing Street acknowledged on Tuesday.
The US deployed six long-range B-52 bombers to the Indian Ocean base as part of its preparations for possible conflict with Iran in the aftermath of the killing of Qassim Soleimani.
No orders have been given yet to strike but Mr Trump has threatened to hit 52 Iranian targets, including cultural heritage sites, if Iran attacks US forces in retaliation for Soleimani’s death.
The US runs a secretive air base from Diego Garcia and the British government has little to no control on what operations the American military runs from the island.
Downing Street admitted that Mr Trump could order strikes on Iran from the island without seeking permission from Britain. “It is provided for under existing agreements,” a spokesman said.

The base on Diego Garcia is 2,400 miles from southern Iran, meaning it is within flying range for the strategic American bombers but beyond the reach of most Iranian missiles.
Diego Garcia is the largest of a string of small islands that Britain retained control of in the 1960s even as it granted independence to other islands that would become the nation of Mauritius.
Britain said it was necessary to retain control of the islands for security reasons. Diego Garcia was leased to the US soon after and the American military has since built a sprawling military facility on the island.
The CIA used the territory at least twice in 2002 to transport detainees between “black site” interrogation centres in the aftermath of September 11.
The UK government at first denied any involvement in the US “extraordinary rendition” programme before eventually acknowledging that Diego Garcia was used as a transport hub.
The Pentagon has sent around 3,500 additional soldiers to the Middle East since Iranian-backed militias briefly laid siege to the US embassy in Baghdad last week.
A total of around 14,000 additional US troops have been sent to the region since tensions with Iran spiked in May and the US said it had evidence of Iranian plans to attack American ships in the Gulf.

This verse is a great reminder for the New Year that God gifted His children with courage, power, love, and self-control. Often, people struggle to possess and embody these character traits. It need not be as difficult. Strive to rely on the Lord more this year for betterment.

This verse reminds us of what Christians are called to, which is to love the Lord and to love others.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Another good verse that can substitute as a New Year’s resolution. Often, getting stronger requires humility. This year, trust in God’s strength rather than your own. Follow the Lord’s path. Acknowledge God’s sovereignty this year and find spiritual renewal and purpose.

6. 1 Corinthians 15:56-57
“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the laws. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
While every person will die once, sin and death have no power over the people who have new life in Christ. When facing the New Year, walk into it with confidence knowing the battle is won!

7. 2 Corinthians 12:10
“For the sake of Christ, then I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
This year, some Christians will face persecution for their faith. It may be mockery or losing a job opportunity, or it may be loss of family and jail. No matter what may come, use everything and anything, including the hardships, to draw closer to and glorify the Lord Jesus. When we are little, God’s greatness shines brighter, and He cares for His own.

3. Philippians 4:4-7
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

What a wonderful reminder that Christians should always go to God praising Him, and can always go to Him with needs and requests. Especially after the rush of the holidays, resetting our minds to thank God and go to Him in thankfulness for another year is a great reminder, and seeking peace of God is a great New Year’s resolution.

While there may not be many professional shepherds these days, the sentiment is nonetheless important today. In essence, it is a reminder to be responsible with that which God has blessed the individual. In the New Year, find the resolve to be more responsible with money, take better care of clothing, and value God’s blessings more.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’”

At the beginning of the year, it is good to be reminded that God is eternally merciful, and renews His love for us over and over again. He is our portion for our daily needs, and carrying that hope into the new year will provide strength and courage to face trials.

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
The Lord is making a new creation in the believer.
Whether or not that is immediately apparent, God is turning each one of His children into a more righteous individual. He will change circumstances as well. If things are bad right now, it will get better. If God can part the Red Sea, resurrect the dead, and put rivers in the desert, He can and will work all things for His children’s good and His glory.

Some people pick a reading plan. Others find themes they want to explore.
