Nairaland GeneralOn The Boxing Day; What Do You Do? by Mrsulay(op): 11:28am On Dec 26, 2017
Why Is Boxing Day Called Boxing Day?
Boxing Day is so called because it was the custom on that day for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes or gifts in return for good and reliable service throughout the year. Boxing Day is also St. Stephen's Day. St Stephen was a little known saint who achieved eternal fame by being the first Christian to be martyred for his faith by being stoned to death shortly after Christ's crucifixion. He's also named in the Christmas song Good King Wenceslas

Nairaland GeneralPresident Assures Better 2018 by Mrsulay(op): 11:09am On Dec 26, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has said 2017 had
been a very tough year for Nigeria, but
expressed optimism that 2018 will be a more
prosperous one.
The President stated this when he received a
delegation of Federal Capital Territory residents
who paid him Christmas homage in the
Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Buhari, however, noted with delight that God had
answered the prayers of Nigerians as the rainy
season was good and farmers recorded bumper
harvest across the country.
He said: “It has been a tough year for Nigeria
and I hope next year will be a much more
prosperous one.
“But God listened to the majority of us.
“The raining season was very good and some
states have got very good information.
“I never knew that the people from Kano who are

Nairaland GeneralCelebrating Christmas; The Better Part Of It by Mrsulay(op): 7:48am On Dec 25, 2017
Christmas is celebrated to remember the
birth of of Jesus Christ , who Christians believe is the Son of God.
The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The 'Christ-Mass' service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had it at Midnight! So we get the name Christ-Mass, shortened to Christmas.
Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world , whether they are Christians or not. It's a time when family and friends come together and remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also like Christmas as it's a time when you give and receive presents !
The Date of Christmas
No one knows the real birthday of Jesus! No date is given in the Bible, so why do we celebrate it on the 25th December? The early Christians certainly had many arguments as to when it should be celebrated! Also, the birth of Jesus probably didn't happen in the year 1 but slightly earlier, somewhere between 2 BCE/BC and 7 BCE/BC, possibly in 4 BCE/BC (there isn't a 0 - the years go from 1 BC/BCE to 1!).
The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the 25th December.
However, there are many different traditions and theories as to why Christmas is celebrated on December 25th.
A very early Christian tradition said that the day when Mary was told that she would have a very special baby,

PoliticsPdp Rebranding Itself With Stolen Arms Money – Lai Mohammed by Mrsulay(op): 11:06am On Dec 16, 2017
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the Peoples Democratic Party is now rebranding itself with the stolen money that was originally meant to fight Boko Haram.
Mohammed, in an interview with Vanguard newspaper, was reacting to the criticism of the approval of State Governors that $1 billion should be released to the Federal Government to fight the Boko Haram insurgency.
The governors gave the approval on Thursday during the National Economic Council meeting.
It was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on Friday distanced himself from the approval.
Fayose said the money was meant to fund the re-election campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
Reacting to the position of the PDP on Friday in the interview with Vanguard, Mohammed said the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan “in one day distributed $269 million cash and N100 billion which was supposed to b money meant to fight Boko Haram”.
He said: “The sad thing about PDP is that they do not know when not to talk.
“If they were smart, they would know when not to talk.
“If not for their rapacious corruption, Boko Haram would not have metamorphosed into the monste that it became before we came in.
“If only they had approached governance with honesty, transparency and sense of purpose, Boko Haram would not have raged between 2009 and 2015.
“It was their inept handling of Boko Haram and their corruption that put us in this mess.
“They seem not to understand that the biggest challenge to any government and the primary responsibility of any government is law and orde and security.
“It is because of the fact that we have been able to contain Boko Haram that they were able to hold their National Convention in Abuja.
“During their time, they were not able to celebrat the National Day openly.
“Under their watch, Boko Haram not only occupied 27 local governments in Borno State, but was also active in almost 10 states.
“Not that alone, they used to stroll to the federal capital, and three times they went to bomb the United Nations, the Police headquarters and under their watch, the Thisday newspaper was bombed and under their watch, about 200 Chibok girls were abducted.”

PoliticsFayose: I Didn’t Approve $1b To Fight Boko Haram ; It To Fund Buhari’s Election by Mrsulay(op): 10:46am On Dec 16, 2017
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has
described the decision to withdraw $1 billion
from the Excess Crude Account to fight the Boko
Haram insurgency in the North East as a means
by which the All Progressives Congress-led
Federal Government will fund President
Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election in 2019.
“For posterity sake, I wish to place it on record
that I was not among the governors, who
approved the withdrawal of almost half of our
savings in the Excess Crude Account, which
belongs to the three tiers of government to fight
an already defeated insurgency,” Fayose
declared.
This was contained in a statement issued in Ado
Ekiti on Friday and signed by his Special
Assistant on Public Communications and New
Media, Lere Olayinka.

officials of DPR appeared before it to defend the
Department’s 2018 budget.
The Chairman of the committee, Senator Tayo
Alasoadura, vowed that the committee would
reduce the estimates when sending it to plenary

Alasoadura said: “Your proposed figure for
foreign trips in the 2018 fiscal year is too high
and must be drastically reduced before it is
presented to the Senate for approval.
“Even the N60.2 million proposed for local trips
in terms of monitoring is also on the high side
