Of all the partner universities outside Africa. I will advise you guys lay more emphasis on UBC, McGill and U of T as none of them require English proficiency test like TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson test etc. Virtually all participating universities in United States of America requires one or more foreign/English test. Eg Stanford University, Michigan State University, Duke, UC BERKLEY, Arizona. State University, Wellesley College(for female applicant). |
By George Onmonya Daniel I want to appeal to the Kaduna State Governor, in a matter of urgency, to see that this boy is taken to the hospital the United States for free treatment. The hospital in the US has already agreed to that. Please Samuel Aruwan inform the honourable governor. I know of your busy schedules but this is a matter of life and death and great trauma to the family of this little boy. The mother told me that the governor is aware of this case. Yesterday night I shared Nuhu Fulani Kwajafa story about this little boy with cancer. People like Abdullahi Dahiru were talking about confirmation. This morning, 2am, Nuhu called me and told me to prepare for this trip. I just got to Abuja from Kaduna and decided to share this story. The poor desperate mother, went as far as Kano with this child to see the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the emir told her she should seek help with the Kaduna State government as the boy is not the indigene of Kano State. He promised to speak to the governor but we don't know if he has done that. The fact is that this boy should be in the hospital not at home. In fact as we got there, flies were all over his face. It was a horrible sight. PLEASE SHARE UNTIL THIS GETS TO GOVERNOR NASIR EL-RUFAI. Thanks for sharing, |

Ever wondered why no local or Nigerian athlete have ever made the top ten position at the Okpekpe 10 km marathon race? I guess what will come to everyone's mind is "nigerians are lazy or don't see this sport as also rewarding". But that's not the case here. It is due to poor grassroots plan and involvement, poor training resources and attitude towards the game of marathon. The talent is there for sure, government and corporate bodies are beginning to organise the game. But some flaws in the structure and organising of the game locally which results to grave injustice towards the locals will just always thwart that dream of any local athlete emerging as winner. I referred to races organised locally as participating in marathon races abroad is not feasible for a local athlete with no sponsor. I also decided to use Okpekpe race as point of reference as I witnessed it live as a participant. Attached are screenshots of my conversations with Yusuf Ali(sec. of the race) which contained the flaws in the Okpekpe race.

Praise be to Allah.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds,
and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet
Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and
Leader of the Messengers, and upon all his
family and companions. To proceed:
The month of Allah Muharram is a great and
blessed month. It is the first month of the
Hijri year and is one of the sacred months
concerning which Allah says (interpretation of
the meaning):
“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve
months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on
the Day when He created the heavens and the
earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the
7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic
calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not
yourselves therein”
[Soorat at-Tawbah 9:36] .
It was narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allah
be pleased with him) from the Prophet
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him):
“… The year is twelve months, of which four
are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhu al-
Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram, and
Rajab of Mudar which comes between
Jumaada and Sha‘baan.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2958).
Muharram is so called because it is a sacred
( muharram ) month; this further emphasizes
its sanctity.
The words of Allah (interpretation of the
meaning): “so wrong not yourselves
therein” [Soorat at-Tawbah 9:36] mean: (do not
wrong yourselves) in these sacred months,
because doing so is a greater sin than at
other times.
It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said,
concerning the words of Allah “so wrong not
yourselves therein” [Soorat at-Tawbah 9:36] :
(The command not to wrong yourself) applies
in all months, then Allah singled out four
months and made them sacred, and
emphasised their sanctity, and He made sin
during these months more grave, and He
made righteous deeds and the reward thereof
greater. Qataadah said, concerning the words
“so wrong not yourselves therein” : Wrongdoing
during the sacred months is more serious and
incurs a greater burden of sin than in other
months. Wrongdoing is a serious matter in
any circumstances, but Allah makes whatever
He wills of His commands carry more weight.
And he said: Allah has chosen elites from His
creation: from among the angels He chose
Messengers, from among mankind He chose
Messengers, from among speech He chose
remembrance of Him (dhikr), from among
spaces on earth He chose the mosques, from
among the months He chose Ramadan and
the sacred months, from among days He
chose Friday (Jumu‘ah), and from among
nights He chose Laylat al-Qadr. So venerate
that which has been chosen by Allah, for
people of understanding and wisdom respect
that which has been chosen by Allah.
End quote from Tafseer Ibn Katheer (may Allah
have mercy on him), commentary on Soorat
at-Tawbah verse 36
The virtue of observing a great deal of naafil
(supererogatory) fasts during the month of
Muharram
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah
be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of
Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) said: “The best fast after Ramadan is in
the month of Allah Muharram.”
Narrated by Muslim (1982).
The phrase “the month of Allah ( shahr Allah )”
is indicative of the veneration this month
deserves, as it is attributed to Allah (in a
genitive or idaafah phrase). Al-Qaari said:
What appears to be the case is that what is
meant is the entire month of Muharram.
But it is proven that the Prophet (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) never fasted
any month in full apart from Ramadan. So
this hadeeth is to be understood as meaning
that it is encouraged to fast a great deal
during the month of Muharram, not to fast
the entire month.
It is proven that the Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) fasted a great
deal during Sha‘baan, and perhaps the virtue
of Muharram was not revealed to him until
the end of his life, before he was able to fast
during this month.
Sharh an-Nawawi ‘ala Saheeh Muslim
Allah chooses whatever He wills of times and
places
Al-‘Izz ibn ‘Abd as-Salaam (may Allah have
mercy on him) said: Superiority of times and
places is of two types, the first of which is in
worldly terms and the second is in religious or
spiritual terms because of what Allah bestows
upon His slaves at those times and in those
places of a greater reward for deeds, such as
the greater virtue of fasting Ramadan over
fasting in other months or on the day of
‘Ashoora’. Its virtue is due to Allah’s
generosity and kindness to His slaves during
it.
Qawaa‘id al-Ahkaam (1/38)
May Allah sent blessings upon our Prophet
Muhammad and upon all his family and
companions.

Praise be to Allah
Blowing oneself up is suicide, which is
haraam (forbidden) because Allah, may He be
exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And do not kill yourselves” [an-Nisa’ 4:29] . And
the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) said: “ … “Whoever kills himself
with a piece of iron will have that iron in his
hand, thrusting it into his belly in the Fire of
Hell for ever and ever.” Narrated by al-
Bukhaari, 5442; Muslim, 109.
This cannot be compared to the child in the
story of al-Ukhdood (the ditch), because he
did not kill himself; rather he was killed by
the disbelieving king. And it cannot be
compared to the story of al-Bara’ (may Allah
be pleased with him) being thrown over the
wall (to open the gates of the fort), or the
hadeeth about charging into the midst of the
enemy, for the same reason. In those cases
there was the possibility of surviving, unlike
when a person blows himself up. Moreover,
such operations sometimes result in the
death of a person for no benefit or very little
benefit, or they cause the death of innocent
people, or they lead to far greater revenge
from the enemy.
This is what has been stated in fatwas by a
number of senior contemporary scholars. The
great scholar Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz
(may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:
What is the ruling on one who blows himself
up in order to kill a number of Jews thereby?
He replied:
What I think, and I have pointed out on more
than one occasion, is that this is not
acceptable, because it is killing oneself, and
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And do not kill yourselves” [an-Nisa’ 4:29] . And
the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) said: “Whoever kills himself with
something will be punished with it on the Day
of Resurrection.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari,
5700; Muslim, 110. When there is a
legitimate jihad, then he may strive in jihad
with the Muslims, and if he is killed, then
praise be to Allah. But to kill himself by
attaching explosives to himself, so that he is
killed with them, this is wrong and is not
permissible.

The faqeeh Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih
al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on
him) was asked about the ruling on suicide
missions.
He replied:
We think that the suicide missions in which a
person is certain that he is going to die are
haraam; in fact they come under the heading
of major sins, because the Prophet (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
“Whoever kills himself with something in this
world will be punished with it on the Day of
Resurrection.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5700;
Muslim, 110. He did not make any
exceptions; rather this is general in
application. Moreover the purpose behind
jihad for the sake of Allah is to protect Islam
and the Muslims, but this suicide bomber is
destroying himself and by committing suicide
is causing the loss of a member of the
Muslim community. Moreover, it involves
causing harm to others, because the enemy
will not kill only one person (in retaliation);
rather because of him they will kill as many
as possible. Furthermore, this will result in
pressure on the Muslims because of this
suicide bomber who may kill only ten or
twenty or thirty others. So it results in a great
deal of harm to the Muslims, as is happening
now in the case of the Palestinians with the
Jews.
The view of those who say that this is
permissible has no basis; rather that is based
on a wrong perspective, because the negative
consequences are many, many times worse
than whatever can be achieved by that. They
have no proof in the story of al-Bara’ ibn
Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) in the
campaign of al-Yamaamah, when he
instructed his companions to throw him over
the wall so that he could open the gate for
them. The actions of al-Bara’ were not bound
to lead to certain death, hence he survived
and opened the gate, and the people entered
the fort. So there is no proof in this story.
End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa wa Rasaa’il
al-‘Uthaymeen , 25/358
In fact he (may Allah have mercy on him)
said in his fatwa for Majallat ad-Da‘wah (1418
AH), when he was asked about this issue: My
opinion concerning that is that he is killing
himself and that he will be punished in Hell
for having killed himself, as is mentioned in a
saheeh report from the Prophet (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him)…
And Allah knows best.

Praise be to Allaah.
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on
him) wrote a useful book on the rulings
concerning the newborn, which he called
Tuhfat al-Mawdood fi Ahkaam al-Mawlood . In
this book he wrote an extensive chapter in
which he spoke of circumcision and the
rulings thereon. The following is a summary
of that, with additional comments from some
other scholars.
1 – The meaning of circumcision ( khitaan ):
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
Khitaan is a noun describing the action of the
circumciser ( khaatin ). It is also used to
describe the site of the circumcision, as in
the hadeeth, “When the two circumcised parts
( al-khitaanaan ) meet, ghusl become
obligatory.” In the case of a female the word
used is khafad . In the male it is also called
i’dhaar. The one who is uncircumcised is
called aghlaf or aqlaf .
Tuhfat al-Mawlood , 1/152
2 – Circumcision is the Sunnah of Ibraaheem
and the Prophets after him:
Al-Bukhaari (6298) and Muslim (2370)
narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be
pleased with him) said: The Messenger of
Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: “Ibraaheem (peace be upon him)
circumcised himself when he was eighty years
old, and he circumcised himself with an
adze.”
An adze ( qadoom ) is a carpenter’s tool; it was
also said that al-Qadoom is a place is Syria.
Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said:
It is most likely that what is referred to in the
hadeeth is the tool. Abu Ya’laa narrated that
‘Ali ibn Rabaah said: “Ibraaheem was
commanded to circumcise himself, so he
circumcised himself with an adze and it was
very painful for him. Then Allaah revealed to
him saying, “You rushed to do it before We
told you what tool to use.” He said, “O Lord, I
did not want to delay obeying Your
command.”
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
Circumcision was one of the things with
which Allaah tested Ibraaheem, His Close
Friend. He did them perfectly so Allaah made
him a leader of mankind. It was narrated that
he was the first one who was circumcised, as
mentioned above. What it says in al-Saheeh is
that Ibraaheem circumcised himself when he
was eighty years old. After him, circumcision
continued among the Messengers and their
followers, even the Messiah. He was
circumcised and the Christians affirm that,
and do not deny that, as they also affirm that
he was forbidden the flesh of pigs…
Tuhfat al-Mawdood , p. 158-159
But the scholars (may Allaah have mercy on
them) differed as to the ruling on
circumcision.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have
mercy on him) said:
The most correct view is that it is obligatory
in the case of men and Sunnah in the case of
women. The difference between them is that
in the case of men, it serves an interest
which has to do with one of the conditions of
prayer, namely purity (tahaarah), because if
the foreskin remains, when the urine comes
out of the urethra, some of it will collect
there, and this causes burning and infection
every time the person moves, and every time
the foreskin is squeezed, some drops of urine
come out, thus causing najaasah (impurity).
In the case of women, it serves a useful
purpose which is to reduce desire. This is
seeking perfection, not removing something
harmful.
Al-Sharh al-Mumti’ , 1/133-134
This is the view of Imam Ahmad (may Allaah
have mercy on him). Ibn Quddamah said in al-
Mughni (1/115): As for circumcision, it is
obligatory for men and it is good in the case
of woman, but it is not obligatory for them.
3 – Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on
him) said:
Abu’l-Barakaat said in his book al-Ghaayah: In
circumcision of a man, the skin at the tip of
the penis (the foreskin) is removed; if he only
removes most of it, that is permissible. It is
mustahabb to circumcise females provided
that is not done in an extreme manner. It was
narrated that ‘Umar said to a woman who
circumcised females, “Leave some of it if you
circumcise (a girl).” Al-Khallaal said in his
Jaami’: What is cut when circumcising:
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn told me that al-
Fadl ibn Ziyaad told them: Ahmad was asked,
How much should be cut in circumcision? He
said, Until the glans (tip of the penis)
becomes visible.
Ibn al-Sabbaagh said in al-Shaamil : What is
obligatory in the case of a man is to cut the
skin on the tip of the penis until the entire
glans becomes visible. In the case of a
woman, it means cutting the skin that looks
like the comb of a rooster at the top of the
vagina, between the two labia; if it is cut the
base of it should be left like a date pit.
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him)
said:
The well-known correct view is that
everything covering the glans must be cut.
Al-Majmoo’ , 1/351
Al-Juwayni said:
The hadeeth indicates that not too much of it
should be removed (in the case of women),
because he said, “Leave something sticking
out and do not go to extremes in cutting.”
Tuhfat al-Mawdood , 190-192
The point is that in the case of males, all the
skin covering the tip of the penis should be
cut, but in the case of females only a part of
the skin that is like a rooster’s comb at the
top of the vagina should be cut.
4 – The wisdom behind circumcision
With regard to a man, he cannot be clean
from urine unless he is circumcised, because
drops of urine collect underneath the foreskin
and he cannot be sure that they will not drip
and make his clothes and body impure. Hence
‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas was very strict on the
issue of circumcision. Imam Ahmad said: Ibn
‘Abbaas was very strict on this matter, and it
was narrated that there is no Hajj and no
prayer for him, i.e., if a person is not
circumcised his Hajj and prayer are not valid.
Al-Mughni , 1/115
With regard to the wisdom behind the
circumcision of women, it is to regulate their
desire so it will be moderate.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah
have mercy on him) was asked about whether
women should be circumcised or not. He
replied:
Praise be to Allaah. Yes, they should be
circumcised, i.e., the top of the piece of skin
that looks like a rooster’s comb should be
cut. The Messenger of Allaah (S) said to the
woman who did circumcisions: “Leave
something sticking out and do not go to
extremes in cutting. That makes her face look
brighter and is more pleasing to her
husband.” That is because the purpose of
circumcising a man is to make him clean
from the impurity that may collect beneath
the foreskin. But the purpose of circumcising
women is to regulate their desire, because if
a woman is not circumcised her desire will be
strong. Hence the words “O son of an
uncircumcised woman” are used as an insult,
because the uncircumcised woman has
stronger desire. Hence immoral actions are
more common among the women of the
Tatars and the Franks, that are not found
among the Muslim women. If the circumcision
is too severe, the desire is weakened
altogether, which is unpleasing for men; but if
it is cut without going to extremes in that, the
purpose will be achieved, which is moderating
desire. And Allaah knows best.
Majmoo’ al-Fataawa , 21/114
5 – It is permissible to pay money for
circumcision.
Ibn Qudaamah said:
It is permissible to pay money for
circumcision and for medical treatment. We
do not know of any difference of opinion on
this matter, because it is doing something
that is needed and which is allowed in
sharee’ah. So it is permissible to pay money
for it, like all other permissible actions.
Al-Mughni , 5/314.

What are the differences(academically, environmentally, cost, resources, job placement prospects etc) between federal universities and state universities? |
After blowing up the chance of applying to one of the top federal universities in Nigeria, there look to be no more hope of him securing admission into the university(one university option through jamb). Along the line, jamb came to the rescue with the "new admission policy", so he was provided with an option of applying into Sule Lamido University , Kafin Hausa, Jigawa. Should he go for SLU, Jigawa(new university to study Physics) or go for Bida Polytechnic(old institution with wider resources: personal logical thinking) to study Civil Engineering. He has got to choose one as there is a clash in the dates of their post ume. He has 72hours left to decide. Also, age is not on his side(21years). Kindly advice needed. |
