On September 30, 2025, during a town hall at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved the conversion of 64 outsourced security guards to ad hoc staff, increasing their monthly salaries from N18,800 to N80,000 effective October 1 to align with the state's minimum wage. The decision addressed complaints about exploitation by the outsourcing firm, which received N27,000 per guard from the hospital but paid them less. Makinde also increased the hospital's monthly subvention from N20 million to N35 million and pledged a new governing council to resolve ongoing strikes and underfunding issues. |

Arsenal have recorded 2 wins in 2 games to sit 5th on the Uefa Champions group phase standing after beating Olympiacos 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Arteta made six changes to the team that defeated Newcastle and two of them combined for an almost immediate goal. Myles Lewis-Skelly crossed beautifully for Gabriel Martinelli, but the Brazilian could not get clean contact as he shouldered the ball wide. Gyokeres hit the woodwork from yard six but Martinelli was present to send the ball into the back of the net to put Arsenal ahead in the 12th minutes. The Swede would miss another good chance later in the first half, as he curled over after cutting inside. But it wasn’t all one-way traffic for Arsenal, against a side that had won on their last three trips to the Emirates, as Olympiacos missed chances of their own to level proceedings before HT. The best fell to Daniel Podence, whose volley produced a stunning save from David Raya. Martin Odegaard had a standout first half as he was spraying passes around the pitch with ease, and Arsenal’s captain did the same in the second as he fed Leandro Trossard, whose close-range effort was saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis. Shortly after, Olympiacos thought they had equalised when Chiquinho tapped home a rebound, but Ayoub El Kaabi’s initial header that Raya saved was from an offside position. Arsenal were looking to seal the victory themselves in the latter stages as Tzolakis saved well from Odegaard running in, and the goalkeeper was helpless for Bukayo Saka’s strike in stoppage time, as the substitute put the ball through his legs. The Greeks gave a good account of themselves, but ultimately lost their 11th successive UCL away match in the group phase.

Portuguese forward Goncalo Ramos replace Spanish Midfielder Fabian Ruiz as second half substitute to scored a last-minute winner as Paris St-Germain beat Barcelona in a meeting of two of the Champions League favourites. Barcelona went ahead when Ferran Torres slid in to meet Marcus Rashford's fine low ball from the left. England's Rashford has scored or assisted a goal in five of Barcelona's last six games. But European champions PSG levelled when Nuno Mendes found Senny Mayulu after a good run and the 19-year-old slotted home. The visitors, who were missing players through injuries, had the best chances to win the game, and managed to do so with Ramos' first-time finish from Achraf Hakimi's cross. It takes them to six points from two games, with Barca on three. PSG were deserved winners of last season's Champions League - as part of the treble - when they blew away Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. Spanish champions Barca had been arguably the most exciting team to watch until their semi-final exit at Inter's hands. So many eyes on Wednesday were on the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, which remains Barcelona's temporary home until the Nou Camp is ready. Impressively, PSG came away with all three points - despite injuries to their first-choice front three of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, plus captain Marquinhos - while they lost midfielder Joao Neves in the warm-up. Barca started brightly, with Rashford and Lamine Yamal impressing on the flanks, and got the opening goal. But former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique's visiting side showed their class with their lung-busting full-backs assisting both goals. Mayulu, 19, struck his second Champions League goal - with his first coming in the final in Munich. PSG had a host of late chances, with Lee Kang-in hitting the post before fellow substitute Ramos bagged the winner.

Jose Mourinho’s latest return to Stamford Bridge ends sour as Chelsea defeat ex manager in a match where Richard Rios owngoal wins it for the host, defeating Benfica 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) to extend the Special One’s winless managerial H2H streak against the Blues to eight games (D3, L5). Coming into this game unbeaten as Benfica boss (W2, D1), Mourinho oversaw a strong start from his side, with Dodi Lukébakio’s low strike requiring an intervention from Robert Sánchez to push it onto the foot of the post. Chelsea eventually responded to the visitors’ positivity, almost breaking the deadlock when Pedro Neto fizzed a bouncing ball narrowly wide of the upright. Undeterred, the winger soon provided a whipped cross to the back post, where Alejandro Garnacho guided the ball back across goal, prompting Richard Ríos to inadvertently divert it into his own net. Having settled into the contest, the Blues nearly doubled their lead ahead of the HT break, as makeshift striker Tyrique George latched onto a Marc Cucurella ball, but couldn’t beat Anatoliy Trubin with only his second touch in the box thus far. Benfica started the second period as they did the first, threatening the home side on a couple of occasions as Fredrik Aursnes found himself in promising positions, only to be flagged offside on both occasions. Clear-cut chances weren’t forthcoming, though, which suited the Blues as they kept the visitors at bay heading into the final 20 minutes. Despite a triple change from Mourinho in an effort to shake things up, Chelsea were the side who came closest to finding the game’s second goal when substitute Estêvão forced a strong hand from Trubin with a header. After red cards in back-to-back Premier League games, Chelsea were once again reduced to 10 men here as João Pedro was dismissed for a second yellow in stoppage time. Nonetheless, the Blues saw out the game to get them off the mark in this season’s UCL campaign and maintain their perfect record against Benfica, having now won each of their five meetings. Meanwhile, the Portuguese giants are without a win in their last nine games against English opponents (D3, L6) and remain without a point in the league phase thanks to their disappointing collapse to Qarabağ on matchday one.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifier between South Africa and Lesotho on March 21, 2025. According to FIFA, SAFA’s action breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations. As a result, the match has been forfeited in favour of Lesotho, with a 3-0 scoreline awarded. In addition, SAFA has been fined CHF 10,000, while Mokoena himself has received an official warning. The decision was formally communicated to the parties today. Under FIFA rules, they have ten days to request a detailed, motivated decision, which would subsequently be published on legal.fifa.com. The ruling remains subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee. Hugo Broos’ men currently sit at the top of their World Cup qualification Group C, having collected 17 points from eight games. Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have apprehended a serving soldier and a police officer for alleged involvement in smuggling arms and logistics to Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in the North East. The Federal Government of Nigeria led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major reform that makes thesis and project submission mandatory for NYSC mobilisation and exemption, effective October 6, 2025. As reported by VANGUARD, stated that the directive is tied to compliance with the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), which will now serve as a prerequisite for participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). According to a circular issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, “NYSC mobilisation criteria have been adjusted in line with the President’s regulation requiring proof of NERD Policy compliance for all prospective corps members, regardless of where they were educated.” The new rule mandates Nigerian graduates whether from universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, or foreign institutions to deposit their academic outputs such as theses and project reports into the NERD database. The policy is designed “as a quality assurance check and as a yearly independent proof of continuous academic enrolment and affiliation.” It aims to curb certificate fraud, safeguard intellectual assets, and restore credibility to Nigeria’s education system. Speaking earlier in March 2025, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that “the approved stipulations for mandatory submission of academic outputs as provided in Sections 2.3, 4.3(1), and 7.6.11(c) of the National Policy for the NERD Programme shall become obligatory requirements in Nigeria.” The directive does not affect serving corps members or those enrolled before the October 6 enforcement date. President Tinubu also approved an academic output monetisation and reward mechanism for students and lecturers, allowing them to earn lifetime revenue from their academic deposits. NERD spokesperson, Haula Galadima, explained: “Each item deposited by a student shall feature the full name of the student, supervisor, co-supervisor (if any), Head of Department, and the sponsoring institution. Apart from the mandate to verify authenticity, the NERD programme seeks to raise the bar in the quality of academic content, output and presentation nationwide.” She added that the digitisation effort will also ensure accountability among lecturers: “If our eminent scholars are aware that their names will appear next to those of the students they supervise on a globally available digital platform, very few lecturers would want their names associated with poorly produced academic works.” The federal government has directed MDAs and higher institutions to fully enforce the NERD policy, while agencies such as NIMC will provide data exchange support to ensure smooth integration. This development marks one of the most significant academic reforms in Nigeria in recent years, tying higher education credibility directly to NYSC mobilisation.
