Countries can tap the potential of the world's historic number of youth and adolescents.
There are currently 1.8 billion young people between ages 10 and 14, and about 600 million are adolescent girls. Their needs, if addressed, could help countries achieve rapid economic growth, according to a new report from the UN Population Fund.



The global community has never before been home to so many youth, and therefore so much untapped potential, the study says.

It’s possible to turn all that womanpower into prosperity. When it comes to international development, a country can experience accelerated growth during a period if its working-age population grows larger than its non-working age population, typically because fertility and mortality rates have dropped. This allows the country to become a more profitable society, a benefit called the “demographic dividend.” Given the high number of youth and adolescents today, the UN report says several countries are poised for this transition if they can ensure that their young people actually make it into the workforce.

The Church of England has finally cleared the last obstacle to appointing women as bishops, overwhelmingly approving legislation at the general synod bringing to an end 20 years of wrangling.
In a show of hands, around 30 people voted against the motion, out of around 480 present. The first women could be appointed before Christmas and arrangements are in place to fast-track anyone eligible into the House of Lords. It seems likely there will be a woman sitting in the House of Lords as a bishop by Easter next year.
The archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, predicted that in 10 years’ time half the Church of England’s bishops might be women. “Ten to 15 years would be reasonable. It depends when people retire,” he said after the vote.
Welby said the church was already working to train women as potential bishops. “We are working very hard at training – the aim is that you end up with a big pool of people where gender is irrelevant. We are going to take this very very seriously.”
But he said the church would also be promoting some men who are against the ordination of women.

Sokoto Has 600,000 Diabetes Cases – Wamakko

Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto state on Saturday said out of six million reported cases of diabetes in Nigeria, no fewer than 600,000 were in the state.

Wamakko made this known in Sokoto at a ceremony to commemorate the 2014 World Diabetes Day in the state.
He said that the statistics of the ailment in the state and the nation were high and called for more aggressive measures to reduce the rate.

Islamic State (Isis) has released a video appearing to show the British terrorist known as “Jihadi John” standing over the severed head of US aid worker Peter Kassig.
Kassig is the one of five US and UK hostages to have been murdered in cold blood in Syria as part of a propaganda initiative by Isis.
The footage also showed what appeared to be the mass beheading of several captured Syrian soldiers.
British prime minister David Cameron said he was “horrified by the coldblooded murder” and said that Islamic State militants “have again shown their depravity”.
The White House said the US intelligence community was working to determine the authenticity of the video. National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said that if the video was authentic, the White House would be “appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American”. She said the White House expressed its deepest condolences to Kassig’s family and friends.

When it comes to kidney donation, deciding you want to go through with it is actually the easy part. Most Americans couldn’t donate a kidney even if they wanted to, finds a new study presented at the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Week conference in Philadelphia.
Dr. Anthony Bleyer, professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and his son Anthony Bleyer, Jr., an economics major at Wake Forest University, looked at data from a representative sample of 7,000 U.S. adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey survey. They discovered that a full 55% of the U.S. population would be ineligible to donate a kidney because of medical conditions—most of them preventable. Based on the criteria the Bleyers used, 15% of adults would be excluded due to obesity, 19% to hypertension, 12% to excessive alcohol use and 12% to diabetes.

That’s not necessarily because a medical condition has rendered the organs damaged. “Our number one thing is we want to preserve the health of the donor,” says Dr. Bleyer. “The donors have to be in really pristine condition.”

Anambra State Police Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 17-year-old senior secondary school prefect, who slumped and died after he was punched by a junior student wearing a mysterious ring.

The deceased prefect, an SS3 student of Modebe Secondary School, Onitsha, whose name was given as Chukwuebuka Okanume, had queried his assailant (names withheld) an SS1student, for dressing shabbily.
The junior student reportedly told him that he was no longer a student of the school, that he came for his transfer certificate to Asaba, Delta State capital, where he and his parents had relocated.
However, a heated argument was said to have ensued between them, resulting in the late senior prefect slapping the junior student believed to be wearing a charmed ring, who was said to have retaliated.

The incident just happened in front of my gate few minutes ago. When an old woman around 50 years plus attempted to kidnap a four-year-old boy.

The boy was sent to buy tomatoes from a woman opposite my gate. Then this old woman came and told the boy to follow her.. The lady who was selling the tomatoes to the boy then asked the woman whether the boy is her child in yoruba language, the woman answered 'yes' he is my son.

But so unfortunate for the woman, the lady selling the tomatoes know the boy's mother so well. Then she immediately raised alarm and within some seconds people crowded and started to question the woman. It was obvious she attempted to kidnap the boy...

During the drama, she quickly threw the ring in her hand which she used in charming the boy into her mouth and swallowed it, right now the boy is dumb and can't talk to anyone..

The Lagos office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) located in Yaba was yesterday besieged by protesters who came in droves to complain about the shoddy distribution of the permanent voter cards (PVCs) in the state.


Those who came as early as 9 am include politicians who were later joined by members of the civil society organisations who chanted solidarity songs with a vow to prevent the forthcoming election in the state from being rigged.

To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the commission ensured that the premises were cordoned off by security personnel comprising mainly of policemen as well as men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who were armed to the teeth.

That however did not deter protesters from registering their protest against the commission as they carried placards bearing several inscriptions such as “We Lagosians detest rigging, give us our PVCs,” “Lagosians reaffirm one man, one woman, one vote, give us our PVCs, period,” “Jega, be warned, don’t act FG’s script in Lagos.”

Takfiri Boko Haram militants have reportedly taken control of another town in the volatile northeastern region of Nigeria near the African country’s border with Niger, forcing many soldiers to flee.


The terrorists captured the town of Malam Fatori in Borno state on Saturday following intense clashes with military forces, a senior official in the neighboring Nigerien town of Diffa said on condition of anonymity.

"Malam Fatori was taken by Boko Haram after violent fighting with the Nigerian army," said the official in Diffa, where thousands of Malam Fatori residents have taken refuge from the raid.

The official also added that 315 Nigerian soldiers escaped over the border to Diffa. Among them, 13 who were injured were taken to a hospital and the rest were sent back to Nigeria.

A man has revealed he has been injected with the Ebola virus on purpose in a bid to fight the deadly disease.


Peter Hubbard said he hopes the small risk he is taking could help create a vaccine to prevent further outbreaks of the disease, which has claimed thousands of lives in west Africa.

Speaking from his apartment in Alexandria, Virginia, Mr Hubbard, a consultant who specialises in natural gas and peer markets, said: “I get a lot of satisfaction out of the fact that this could potentially develop into a viable vaccine that prevents another outbreak. It might not help out with the current outbreak but it could prevent a future one, so that’s a real plus in my book.”

Mr Hubbard, 35, is one of 20 people taking part in clinical trials for a vaccine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States.
The vaccine he is trialling, co developed by GlaxoSmithKline and the NIH, consists of a common cold virus, called an adenovirus, that has been engineered to carry TWO genes of the Ebola virus.

Animal testing has shown that when the adenovirus infects cells, the Ebola genes produce harmless proteins that stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies to the deadly disease.

Despite being injected with parts of the virus on September 9, Mr Hubbard revealed that he felt so healthy he has even taken part in a MARATHON.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Oladipo Afolayan, for allegedly raping a woman in his office.

The development comes a few months after another Lagos DPO, Mr. Adekunle Awe, was arrested for allegedly raping a woman, Idowu Akinwunmi, in his office at the Onikan Police Division.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Afolayan, who is a Superintendent of Police, had only been recently posted to the Magodo Police Post when the incident allegedly occurred.
It was learnt that the woman he allegedly raped was a suspect in an ongoing investigation.
It was gathered that following a report by the victim, Afolayan was arrested and brought before the Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti.
Aderanti was said to have also reported the matter to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command, Mr. Umar Manko.
Our correspondent learnt that the matter was transferred to the X Squad, a department at the state
command which is in charge of investigating police crimes and misdemeanours.

A man who died after being tasered by police was allegedly found eating a woman’s eyeball and face in a hotel room.


Security staff at The Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Argoed, South Wales, burst into the room after murder suspect Matthew Williams, 34, refused to let them in.

Horrified staff called police who hit Williams with the high voltage taser knocking him to the floor.

Williams, who was released from prison just two weeks ago, was formally arrested but died moments later.
The 22-year-old woman, who he had just met, was also confirmed dead from her injuries.

The horrific attack on the young woman was met with revulsion in the former mining village.

NEW YORK: Hackers stole 53 million email addresses in addition to customers' card data, Home Depot said Thursday.

The nation's largest home improvement chain had disclosed the massive, months-long breach of 56 million debit and credit cards in September.

Home Depot's breach surpassed Target's pre-Christmas 2013 data theft, which compromised 40 million credit and debit cards and hurt sales and profits. Since late last year, Michaels, SuperValu and Neiman Marcus have been among a string of retailers that have also reported breaches, though they were smaller.

While shoppers appear to have grown numb to the hacks, the breaches have forcing changes in retailing. Target's breach pushed banks, retailers and card companies to increase security by speeding the adoption of microchips in US credit and debit cards, which supporters say are more secure. Home Depot reiterated that it will be activating chip-enabled checkout terminals at all of its US stores by the end of the year.

The file containing the email addresses did not contain passwords or other sensitive personal information, according to Home Depot. However, it said that customers should be on guard against phishing scams. Phishing attacks are sent through texts or emails and try to trap you into disclosing personal information.
