Oil Firm, CEO Approach Court, Seek N20billion Damages Over False Allegations, Publications



Renowned oils firm, Matrix Energy and its Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Abdulkadir Adisa Aliu, have approached a High Court of Justice of the Federal Capital Territory, seeking N20billion over what they described as libelous allegations and publications against them.

In a suit, through their Counsel, Dr Ahmed Raji, SAN, the claimants are praying the court for an order restraining two media houses, BusinessDays
Media Limited and Cable Media and Publishing Limited from further publishing libelous report against them.

Also joined in the matter with suit number CV/3718/2024 and CV/3719/2024 are the authors of the reports, Olalekan Fakoyejo and Abubakar Ibrahim.

According to Dr Raji, Matrix Energy and Abdulkadir Adisa Aliu, who are 1st and 2nd claimants in the suit, the two media houses were said to have accused them of importing low grade fuel from Malta into the country.

The claimants are seeking N10b each as damages from the two media companies abd an additional N200million each as the cost of filing the suit.

In the suit, BusinessDay was said to have reported the following through their media platforms: "From Russia to Malta: How Matrix Energy imports dirty petrol.

"Leaked documents and extensive interviews with sources have unveiled how Africa‘s biggest oil-producing country has been importing substandard petroleum products from Malta, a country with no known oil refineries.

"The confidential files, obtained by BusinessDay, detailed a complex scheme involving the importation of low-quality petroleum petrol from Russia to Malta for blending before being shipped to Nigeria.

"One of the leaked documents suggests Matrix Energy, a company with both upstream and downstream operations, has been importing blended low-grade petroleum products with higher-quality fuel before distributing it to the Nigerian market.

"Findings further showed that Matrix Energy owns a 150 million litre _ capacity depot in Warri (Bluefin Depot), three old ships (Matrix Pride, Matrix Triumph, Matrix S.ILU), and about 600 trucks.

“They are very active in the import of Russian products through various blending locations,” a senior source involved in the shipping business told BusinessDay".

On its Cable news was said to have reported, "REVEALED: Tinubu’s economic council member behind petrol imports from Malta, Russia. Nigeria was awash with news recently about the quantum leap in the quantity of fuel imports from Malta after revelations by Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

"In 2023, Nigeria’s petroleum importation from Malta surged significantly to $2.8 billion, compared to zero between 2017 and 2022, and a mere $13.32 million in 2016.

"Mele Kyari, the group chief executive officer (GCEO) of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), immediately denied Dangote’s claim, saying he did not have interest in any plant in Malta. TheCable can now reveal the identity of one of the biggest importers via the tiny European country."

The claimants, through their Counsel prayed the court for the following:
A declaration that the publication made by the Defendants on the 17th day of August, 2024 with the caption: “From Russia to Malta: How Matrix Energy imports dirty petrol through the 2nd Defendant's Newspaper “BusinessDay”, is false, malicious, libelous and defamatory of the Claimants.

"An order of this Honourable Court compelling the Defendants to forthwith delete or cause to be deleted the libelous/defamatory words contained in their publication of 17th day of August, 2024 with the caption: “From Russia to Malta: How Matrix Energy imports dirty petro!” as published through the 2nd Defendant’s Newspaper “BusinessDay”.

"An order of this Honourable Court compelling the Defendants to immediately and wholly retract the libelous/defamatory words contained in their publication of 17th day of August, 2024 with the caption: “From Russia to Malta: How Matrix Energy imports dirty petrol” as published through the 2nd Defendant’s Newspaper “BusinessDay”, tender unreserved apology to the Claimants via the same Newspaper “BusinessDay” for the defamatory remarks contained in the said publication, and publish same apology in at least three major National Dailies of the Claimants’ choice.

"An order of this Honourable Court directing the Defendants to pay to the Claimants the sum of N10,000,000,000.00 (Ten Billion Naira) only as damages, for the libelous/defamatory words contained in their publication of 17" day of August, 2024 with the caption: “From Russia to Malta: How Matrix Energy imports dirty petrol” as published through the 2nd Defendant’s Newspaper “BusinessDay”.

"An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Defendants, their Servants, agents, or privies from further publishing libelous or any other defamatory words/stories about the Claimants or from further inferring in any manner whatsoever to the Claimants’ reputation.

"The sum of N200, 000, 000.00 (Two Hundred Million Naira) only being the cost of litigation for this suit and which cost include professional fees of Counsel engaged by the Claimants, in consequence of the defamation of the Claimants’ character by the Defendants as aforesaid."

According to the claimants, the Defendants who are the authors of the above libelous publication deliberately, carelessly, intentionally and maliciously authored same in the words reproduced above, knowing fully well that the words as authored and published by them to the whole world, and as concerning the Claimants meant in their natural and ordinary meaning in the estimation of all right thinking persons in the society to be the following: That the 1st Claimant is conniving with economic enemies of Nigeria to import adulterated, substandard/low quality petroleum products into Nigeria.

"That the 1st Claimant is engaging in an organised crime of storage, supply and distribution of adulterated and substandard petroleum products to unsuspecting members of the public who suffer frequent vehicle and equipment breakdowns, as a result of such nefarious activities in which the 1" Claimant takes active part.

"That even though the 1st Claimant is a key private sector player in the Nigerian economy and boasts of being a major contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, the 1st Claimant is sabotaging the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria to stop importation of petroleum products and revitalise the country’s local refineries.

"That the 1sr Claimant’s oil and gas, and maritime operations are aimed at defrauding the Nigerian State for the corporate benefits of the 1st Clatmant.

Reactions as Abel Damina joins Dunamis midnight prayer

Billy Osawaru, Other Rep Members Accused of Corruption, Risk Recall Over Support for Alleged Oil Sector Fraud

Some members of the House of Representatives led by Hon. Billy Osawaru have been threatened with recalls over their perceived support for the corruption regime in the country’s oil and gas sector.

The Save Nigeria Proactive Coalition (SNPC) which made this known in a press statement on Friday also accused Osawaru and others of receiving over $10 million as kickbacks to support the nation’s oil regulatory agencies.

This comes after the House of Representatives called for the investigation of the international oil companies (IOCs) in Nigeria for allegedly conspiring to frustrate the survival of Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals.

The House had also demanded the sack of Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) boss Farouk Ahmed with Mele Kyari of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) Limited coming under serious pressure.

In a statement co-signed by its National President and Secretary General Arome James Otairu And Bilikus Adamu, the Save Nigeria Proactive Coalition described Osawaru and his colleagues as “dishonourable members of the National Assembly who are masquerading as agents of the people, but their actions betray their true allegiance to corruption and mismanagement.”

The group, therefore, dared Osawaru’s other “faceless” lawmakers to publish their full identities and constituencies within the next 24 hours and see if their constituents would not recall them.

Additionally, the Coalition said it would not hesitate to mobilise Nigerians against Osawaru and his cohorts in Abuja, Lagos, and Kaduna to force them to resign after Kyari and Ahmed had been shown the way out.

“We are outraged and disappointed by the actions of some so-called 50 lawmakers who rallied support for Mele Kyari and Farouk Ahmed, despite their glaring failures and incompetence in managing the oil industry,” the statement said.

“These dishonourable members of the National Assembly are masquerading as agents of people, but their actions betray their true allegiance to corruption and mismanagement.

“Their attempt to shield Kyari and Farouq from accountability is a clear indication of their complicity in the massive failure, corruption, and mismanagement that has characterised the oil industry under their watch.

“It is unacceptable that they would prioritize the interests of these failed appointees over the welfare of Nigerians who are suffering from the consequences of their incompetence.

“We warn these lawmakers that their actions will not go unchallenged. Their constituents will not forget their betrayal, and they will be held accountable for their actions.

“We call on Nigerians to begin the process of recalling these lawmakers who have clearly demonstrated that they are not representing the interests of their constituents.

“Their threat to the investigative committee to be impartial is a clear indication of their desperation to cover up the truth.

“We demand that the committee ignores their threats and continues to uncover the truth behind the failures in the oil industry. Nigerians deserve to know the truth, and those responsible must be held accountable.

“Furthermore, we challenge these lawmakers to disclose the source of the $10 million received to run their scheme, with only 12 lawmakers invited by Hon. Billy Osawaru, who is notorious for raising nebulous groups within the new members' caucus to attract favour from the House leadership. This is a clear case of corruption and abuse of office.

“We demand that Kyari and Farouq resign and go home, or face the wrath of Nigerians who will not hesitate to call for their removal. Their continued presence in office is an insult to the intelligence and patience of Nigerians.

“We also call on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the crisis in the oil industry. The removal of Kyari and Farouq is a necessary step towards restoring sanity and accountability in the industry.

“Furthermore, we demand that these dishonourable lawmakers publish their full identities and constituencies within the next 24 hours. We dare them to make this information public and see if Nigerians will not recall them within 21 days.

“Their constituents have the right to know their true representatives and hold them accountable. We are confident that once their identities are revealed, Nigerians will take swift action to recall them.

“Finally, we warn these lawmakers that their actions will have consequences. They will be forced to face the wrath of Nigerians who will not tolerate their antics forever.

“We will organise mass protests and rallies to demand their resignation and ensure that they are held accountable for their actions. We will not rest until they are removed from office and replaced with true representatives of the people.”

Three groups, Take It Back (North Central), Middle Belt Economic Forum, and Renewed Hope Prosperity Ambassadors have called off the planned protest in the Northern states, including Abuja.

The groups cited concerns about the potential for destabilization and harm to their communities as the reason for their decision.

The groups which made this known at a joint press conference on Tuesday in Abuja said the decision was made after a careful appraisal of the situation and a fruitful interaction with the Minister of Water Resources, Prof Joseph Utsev.

In his address, Dr. Amodu Ben also commended the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume and other critical stakeholders in the North Central for their efforts in maintaining peace and order in the region.

"We have come to this decision not out of fear or intimidation, but out of a deep understanding of the current political climate and the potential consequences of our actions," said Dr. Amodu Ben.

Ben said they also took into account the developmental programs being driven by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's development agenda.

The groups recognized the right to protest as an inherent and fundamental aspect of citizenship but emphasized the need for peaceful and constructive dialogue to avoid catastrophic consequences.

Ben observed instances where peaceful protests have rapidly escalated into violent confrontations, resulting in widespread destruction, loss of life, and immense human suffering.

They, however, urged citizens to redirect their energies towards constructive dialogue and engagement with the government.

"Let us join forces to build a brighter future for the Middle Belt region, one that is founded upon the principles of peace, prosperity, and cooperation," Dr. Ben said.

"We would like to seize this opportunity to express our heartfelt commendation to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and other critical stakeholders in the North Central," he said.

“Their tireless efforts in maintaining peace and order in the region have not gone unnoticed, and their dedication to the well-being of our nation is truly commendable.

“These exceptional individuals have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to prioritizing the interests of our nation above personal agendas, exemplifying a profound understanding of the intrinsic value of peaceful coexistence and the preciousness of human life, which is a cherished asset to families, states, and our country as a whole.

“We also extend our unreserved and heartfelt commendation to President Tinubu for his indefatigable efforts in constructing the nation of our collective aspirations. *ETI Disowns Statement Against Reps Deputy Spokesperson Agbese, Accuses Ex-Members of Impersonation*

The Energy Transparency Initiative (ETI) has disowned a statement made by individuals claiming to be its representatives, criticizing Hon. Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Federal House of Representatives.

The group's President and Secretary, Francis Nedu and Ismaila Bello in a joint statement, revealed that the persons were expelled long ago due to fraudulent activities and other abuses that contravened the group's objectives.

"We are shocked and dismayed that these individuals would continue to impersonate ETI and make statements that do not reflect our values and mission," the statement read.

"Their actions are a clear attempt to blackmail and extort money from innocent parties, and we condemn their behaviour in the strongest terms.

"The leadership of ETI is aware that some government agencies have released as huge as $500,000 to the impostors to blackmail Hon. Philip Agbese and other National Assembly members who want sanity in the oil and gas sector."

The statement expressed support for Hon. Agbese's claims of deliberate attempts by the Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to discredit Dangote Refinery company.

The group said Agbese demonstrated exceptional leadership and courage in "exposing the truth" and applauded his efforts to protect Nigerian entrepreneurs and promote indigenous businesses.

"Agbese's dedication to serving the people and upholding the principles of fairness and transparency is exemplary," the statement added.

"He has shown that he is a true representative of the people, and his actions have earned him the respect and admiration of many. We are proud to support him and stand by him in this matter.

"NNPCL and NMDPRA have shown a clear bias towards International Oil Companies (IOCs) and have consistently frustrated the efforts of Nigerian entrepreneurs.

"Their actions are a disservice to the nation and undermine the government's efforts to promote indigenous businesses."

The ETI, therefore, expressed support for the House of Reps call for the Chief Executive Officer of NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed to resign.

"Agbese's reiteration of the House's earlier call for the NMDPRA boss to be sacked is the position of many Nigerians who mean well for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu," the statement said. 

"We believe that the dismissal of the NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari is long overdue as well. The ETI calls on President Tinubu to take immediate action to address this issue and ensure that these regulatory agencies serve the interests of the nation, not just a select few."

ETI, however, said that it had taken legal action against the imposters and already involved law enforcement agencies to ensure that they were brought to justice.

"We will not tolerate any attempts to impersonate our organization or make false statements that damage our reputation," the statement noted. 

"We urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and uphold the principles of fairness and transparency. We will continue to monitor developments and ensure that all actions and policies are aligned with the national interest, free from undue influence or partisan agendas."

*Youth Network Lauds Tinubu, Ben Kalu Over South East Development Commission*

The Nigerian Youth Network (NYN) has commended President Bola Tinubu and Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, on the signing of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law.

In a statement signed by its national president, Comrade Francis Arinze, the group praised President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and commitment to the development of the South-East region.

According to Arinze, the assent to this bill demonstrates his administration's dedication to addressing the region's infrastructure deficits and promoting economic growth.

The group further hailed Ben Kalu, the main sponsor of the bill, for his tireless efforts in championing the cause of the South-East.

Arinze noted that his leadership and advocacy have been instrumental in bringing this legislation to fruition.

"The SEDC bill is a landmark achievement that will have far-reaching benefits for the South-East region," he said. 

"It will facilitate the reconstruction and rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, promote economic development, and enhance the quality of life for the people of the region.

"We are confident that President Tinubu's administration will continue to work tirelessly to address the region's challenges and promote its growth.

"We commend the Deputy Speaker for his leadership and commitment to the development of the South-East. We pledge our support for the President's administration and urge all Nigerians to do the same."

Rivers: Group blasts pro-Wike lawmakers for calling for arrest of CTC chairmen, members

A pro-democracy group, the People’s Congress, has slammed the factional Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for calling on the Nigeria Police Force to arrest the chairmen and members of the 23 LG Caretaker Committees in the state.

In a statement issued today, Dr. Nicholas Udenta, President of the group, said the Martin Amaewhule and his co-travellers are simply calling for anarchy in the state and their call should be disregarded by the law enforcement agencies.

"It's obvious that Martin Amaewhule and his co-travellers are still brooding the lost of their membership of the the Rivers State Assembly following their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. They have themselves to blame; they were aware of the position of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on defection of lawmakers before choosing to commit political suicides," the statement said.

"Their continous vendetta and plots against the government and people of Rivers State are getting out of hand and they need to stop playing politics with the development of the state.

"The latest show of shame by these imposters, pretending to be lawmakers was their unlawful call for the Police to arrest the duly-constituted Caretaker Committee Chairmen and members in Rivers State. The world knows that after the expiration of the tenure of the LGA Chairmen, the Governor Siminalayi Fubara's administration constituted Caretaker Committees to man the affairs of the local governments pending the next election as any responsible government would have done.

"But in their usual nature of witch-hunting any progress made by the Fubara's administration, the disgruntled former lawmakers are now shamelessly calling on the Nigeria Police to arrest the members of the duly-constituted Caretaker Committees.

"Their call is tantamount to calling for anarchy. We urge the good officers and men of the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agencies to disregard the call of the saboteurs pretending to be lawmakers. They are out to destabilise Rivers State and should be completely ignored or better still, arrest for attempting to incite anarchy in the state."

Governor Lawal Accused of Connection with Banditry


The Citizens United Against Terrorism (CUAT) has accused Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State of having a strong connection with bandits.


The group also asked the governor to explain the source of a video which attempted to link predecessor and Minister of State Defence, Bello Matawalle, to banditry.


The Citizens United Against Terrorism made this known at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja. 


In his address, Comr. Obinna Francis said the state has witnessed a surge in attacks by bandits who are allegedly receiving protection, benefits, and favours from the governor.


He noted that alarming reports have surfaced indicating that bandits are now utilizing more advanced weaponry than ever before, exceeding the arsenal previously seized from vanquished bandit groups during the preceding administration. 


The group cited the video released by a notorious bandit leader supposedly implicating the Minister of State Defence as the handiwork of the governor. 


"This alarming revelation has sparked widespread concern and scrutiny, prompting questions about the potential collusion between political figures and criminal entities," he added. 


"A pertinent inquiry arises regarding the circumstances under which the spokesperson of the Governor of Zamfara State was the first to view the video, raising suspicions about their possible connections with the bandits.


"The fact that the incriminating video, featuring the Minister of Defence and former Governor of Zamfara State, surfaced publicly through the spokesperson of the current Governor of Zamfara, warrants a thorough examination."


The Citizens United Against Terrorism also expressed concern over Governor Lawal's inability to stem the tide of banditry, despite his oath of office to serve and protect the people.


"We firmly believe that this situation warrants a heightened scrutiny of the current governor's actions, rather than solely focusing on the past administration's tenure," Francis said.


The group accused Governor Lawal of abandoning his duties and absconding to Enugu State, where he indulged in celebratory festivities, while the security situation in Zamfara continued to deteriorate.


"We regret to say that Governor Dauda Lawal has proven himself unworthy of leading a state like Zamfara, and his despicable actions in the face of these recent events demand a thorough and rigorous investigation into his alleged connections with the bandits responsible for the chaos," Francis said.


The group, therefore, demanded that Governor Lawal provide a comprehensive explanation to the people of Zamfara regarding the nature of his relationship with the bandits and seek clarity on the concrete measures he is taking to address the escalating crisis.

The World Choir Games is a prestigious international competition that celebrates the rich tapestry of choral music from around the globe.

According to WCG’s website, this year’s event had more than 11,000 singers from over 30 countries in Auckland for “the largest choral competition and festival on the planet.”

*100 Civil Society Groups Pledge to Boycott Protest Against Federal Government*

One hundred civil society groups in Nigeria, under the United for Greater Nigeria Coalition (UGNC), have announced their decision to boycott the planned mass protests against President Bola Tinubu's administration.

The coalition cited the administration's progress in key sectors and the implementation of impactful reforms by some ministers as reasons for their decision.

According to UGNC, the Tinubu administration has made tangible and impactful achievements in just one year in office, rendering any negative criticism or demonstration against his administration moot.

The coalition praised ministers Festus Keyamo, Abubakar Kyari, and Joseph Terlumun Utsev for their innovative ideas and pragmatic approaches, which have positively impacted the common masses.

"After thorough deliberation, we have unanimously decided to boycott the planned mass protests against President Bola Tinubu’s administration," said a statement by its co-coveners Comrade Timothy Achaluda and Abubakar Babangida Abubakar.

"Our decision is informed by the fact that the tangible and impactful achievements of Tinubu’s administration in just one year in office have ultimately rendered any negative criticism or demonstration against his administration moot.

We are satisfied with developments in some of these key sectors and will not allow enemies of the country to roll back the progress being made by Keyamo, Utsev, and Kyari, whose policies and reforms have positively impacted the common masses.

"We have it on good authority that the planned mass protests, allegedly aimed at addressing poor governance in Nigeria, are being orchestrated by individuals with hidden agendas.

"These protests do not genuinely reflect the will of the people but rather constitute a reckless attempt to incite violence, sow disorder, and divert the government's attention from addressing the people's priorities.

The coalition, therefore, urged Nigerians, especially youths, to shun the protests and instead continue to support the Tinubu administration's efforts to steer Nigeria towards a prosperous future.

"We urge Nigerians to give the Tinubu administration the necessary support and time to implement its policies, which are designed to benefit all citizens," the statement noted. 

"We call on the police and other relevant agencies to be on alert to forestall any breakdown of law and order during the planned mass protests.

"We urge them to be vigilant and ensure that the protests do not degenerate into violence and chaos."

Ganduje’s Absentia Arraignment:  CSOs fault EFCC, lament deceitful  fight against corruption 

Over 100 Civil Society Organizations under the umbrella of Committee Against Oppression and Persecution, COMAP, have frowned at what they described as "the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's penchant for selective persecution of persons perceived to be in the bad  books of certain political interests in the country."


They decried a situation where a certain set of people close to the current administration would be treated as untouchables even with already established fraud allegations running into billions of naira, while the EFCC unfairly treats those perceived to be in the bad books of these people by levelling unfair allegations and using the instrumentality of Federal power to turn the tide of the courts against them with impunity. 


The activists made specific reference to the ongoing court case against a former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, whom they said had been indicted in an alleged bribery and multi-billion naira fraud scandal, and whom they claimed the EFCC had been allegedly shielding from prosecution.


According to them, the Chairman of the Kano state Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCCAC), Muhuyi Magaji, also alleged that the agency had traced N51.3 billion allegedly diverted by Ganduje.


In a press statement issued by the CSOs, they observed that while they recognised the dangers that corruption in public and private spaces posed for Nigeria, a law enforcement agency must not jettison the concept of justice in the service of political aggrandizement. 


According to them, Ganduje has not only shunned the court and arraignment about five times in the last few months, in his alleged corruption case at the Kano High Court, but has also seriously disrespected the courts and the Nigerian legal system by not even dignifying the courts with representation by Counsels.


COMAP, in the statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Kure; and Secretary, Barr. Udoji Franklin, said, "The Kano High Court was to arraign the former Kano Governor, Umaru Ganduje and his wife on April 17, 2024, over allegations of bribery and misappropriation of funds. Neither he nor his wife went to court. They also disrespected the court so much that they didn't send any Counsel.


"Matter was adjourned to 29th April but was stalled again. No representation, no appearance. Ganduje was not present. The case was again adjourned to May 16, and on that day, arraignment was rescheduled to June 5. Still, the former governor, who we are sure no longer as immunity and is not above the laws of Nigeria by virtue of being the Chairman of the ruling party, did not show up. No representation still. The last arraignment was supposed to be July 11. 


"At the resumed proceedings on July 11, Ganduje and his co-defendants were again absent. The judge declined a prayer by the prosecution counsel for a warrant of arrest but ruled that the defendants could be tried in absentia. Remember, this is also a criminal case like the one the EFCC is celebrating everyday on another former two-term governor."


The CSOs called on President Bola Tinubu to save the image of corruption war in Nigeria and stop the EFCC from further deceiving Nigerians by unfairly castigating law abiding citizens, intimidating people perceived to have no godfathers and allowing established criminals to roam the streets with audacity at the expense of the country's image. 


"We are in full support of Mr. President to turn this country around but he must be mindful of those plotting to terminate his rule after four years with unpopular actions. They have formed themselves into a cabal and will be the first set of people to betray him," COMAP claimed.


The Coalition recalled that, shortly after Kano State repealed its chieftaincy laws and reinstated a previously dethroned emir, believed to be close to former Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso, the EFCC, expectedly, immediately invited Kwankwaso officially, but could not follow up with an arrest when the latter obtained a restraining order preventing his arrest by the agency or others.


"In Yahaya Bello's case, EFCC shunned the laws of the system, treated him like a coup plotter without any official invitation and despite holding a valid restraining order against such, and the Commission thinks it has succeeded in turning Nigerians against him with daily misleading propaganda on their social media handles. Those who are not beclouded by politics and hate know this is deceit and not corruption fight," it stated. 


According to COMAP, Ganduje is not different from the former Governor of Kogi State, as they were both two-term governors.


"Aside from Ganduje, there are many pending cases that the antigraft agency has tactically abandoned. We are aware that the N70bn money laundering allegation against Bello Matawalle, former Governor of Nasarawa State, is still pending though he has a restraining order against arrest. 


"If the EFCC cannot engage in a just fight against corruption, starting from within its ranks, they should stop molesting vulnerable political figures. It is high time we saddled people with the real responsibilities of tackling corruption in Nigeria and not executing dangerous political survival strategies for paymasters," COMAP stated.

Group Reacts To Court Order Stopping Bayero From Parading Himself As Emir


The Kano Democratic Vanguard has condemned the recent judgement by Justice Amina Aliyu, which restrained Aminu Ado-Bayero and four other deposed Emirs from parading themselves as Emirs. 

This ruling according to Isah Jafar, the Convener of the group is a clear violation of justice.

Jafar said: "We urge the people of Kano to stand firm against the judgement and fight for the restoration of their beloved Emirate.

"The Kano Democratic Vanguard will continue to support the rightful Emir, Ado Bayero, and the people of Kano in their struggle against oppression.

"We demand that the judiciary reverses this judgement and restores the rightful Emir of Kano.

"The Kano Democratic Vanguard calls on all citizens of Kano to rise up against this injustice and demand the restoration of their traditional institution."

*Coalition Dismisses Former Rivers Lawmakers’ Attempt to Shut Down State Govt Expenditure*

The National Vanguard for Rule of Law (NVRL) has laughed off the attempt by former Rivers State Assembly lawmakers to shut down the state government expenditure.

In a statement signed by Comrade Johnson Babatunde, the group described the move as “illegal, null and void”.

Recall that the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly purportedly shut down all expenditures of the government until Governor Siminalayi Fubara presents his budget before the House.

The former lawmakers voted to block the Rivers State Consolidated Revenue Account thus preventing Governor Fubara’s administration from spending any money on behalf of the state.

However, in response, Babatunde reminded Amaewhule and 24 others that their seats were declared vacant on December 13, 2023, after they dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We read a report in the media, credited to former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by the former Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, wherein the former lawmakers passed a resolution shutting down all expenditures of the state government, pending when His Excellency Governor Siminalayi Fubara re-presents the 2024 budget estimates of the State before them,” the statement said.

“We view the action of the former lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike as illegal, null and void.

“For the records, Governor Fubara had in December, 2023, signed the budget of N800 billion into law after presenting it before lawmakers led by the former speaker, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, who passed it into law.

“We use this opportunity to remind Amaewhule and 24 others that there seats were declared vacant on December 13, 2023, after they dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“They remain former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and not current members. How then do they expect Governor Fubara to present the 2024 budget of Rivers State before them?

“We use this opportunity to remind the courts that Amaewhule and his group are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, therefore, any attempt to secure an injunction to deny Governor Fubara access to the consolidated revenue fund of the state, or deny ministries, departments and agencies in Rivers State access to their accounts to implement the 2024 budget be denied or thrown out of the by courts.

“The banks too must be aware of the current status of the former lawmakers and not deal with them as current members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“We have observed that the enemies of Rivers State have decided to target the Rivers State Government budget and accounts in their bid to scuttle the giant strides recorded by Governor Fubara in the course of implementing the 2024 budget, which has earned the governor accolades across the state and beyond.

“Recall that, immediately after signing the 2024 budget into law, Governor Fubara flagged - off the Trans-Kalabari road project phase 2 as well as the Elele-Omoku Road project that cuts through Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Areas of the state and many other laudable projects.

“These achievements have unsettled the pro-Wike camp and they have decided to attacks the finances of the state to slow down the provision of dividends of democracy to Rivers people by Governor Fubara.

“We call on the good people of Rivers State and Nigerians to ensure the former Rivers lawmakers Don't succeed in their evil against Rivers State. “

Maritime Seminar For Judges Aimed At Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution In The Sector - NSC Boss

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigeria Shippers Council, Barrister Akutah Pius, has stated that the 17th International Maritime Seminar for Judges, organised by the council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI), aims to promote alternative dispute resolution in the maritime sector.

Speaking on the TVC programme "Business Nigeria," Akutah emphasized that the Nigerian justice system strongly advocates for alternative dispute resolution to ensure quick resolution of disputes, particularly in commercial cases as in the maritime sector.

He explained that prolonging commercial disputes in court has a negative impact on the economy, and therefore, promoting alternative dispute resolution is crucial for economic stability.

Akutah also highlighted the council's efforts to encourage the use of alternative dispute resolution to foster harmonious relationships among stakeholders in the maritime sector, minimising the acrimony that often accompanies court resolutions.

He said, "The Nigerian justice system has advocated strongly for alternative dispute resolution to reduce the pressure on the court and to ensure that disputes are quickly resolved between parties, particularly commercial disputes as in the case in this sector.

"The more time commercial disputes are wasted in the court will impact ultimately the economy because commercial disputes that are prolonged are not good for business and the economy. Therefore, we try to use ADR to resolve issues between players in the maritime sector to quickly move forward so that they can work together as a team without the acrimony that usually court resolutions would bring.

"To that effect, we have decided to partner with the NJI under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy which now supervises the activities of the Nigeria Shippers Council to see how this programme, which has been ongoing for over 30 years will impact positively on the way maritime disputes are resolved. So that we do not waste time in dealing with disputes in the maritime sector but quickly resolve them to move on so that the business environment would be safe and free of acrimony for the players."

The Coalition on Transparency and Rule of Law (CTRL) has commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its commitment to the nation’s telecoms sector which has led to an increase in its contribution to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The coalition also praised the leadership of Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NCC, for his vision and strategic goal alignment.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has received a petition from the Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN) to arrest and investigate former Unity Bank Chairman, Thomas Akoh Etuh, for various offences including corporate malfeasance, insider bank fraud, and money laundering.

The petition, signed by GICN's Chairman, Board of Trustees, and President, Edward Omaga, Esq., alleges that Etuh committed these offences during his tenure as Chairman of Unity Bank's Board of Directors between January 23, 2015, and October 4, 2017.

According to the petition, Etuh's actions led to the bank's financial woes, including a significant increase in non-performing loans (NPLs) and the eventual sale of the bank's interest to Providus Bank.

The petition also alleges that Etuh used his position to enrich himself and his associates, causing significant financial losses to the bank and its customers.

The GICN is urging the EFCC to take immediate action, including arresting and prosecuting Etuh, directing the Central Bank of Nigeria to remove Unity Bank's Directors, and compelling Etuh to refund any funds fraudulently diverted from the bank.

The petition adds: "We contend that the action of the Lagos State High Court presided over by Justice L.A. Okunnu when he discharged Thomas Akoh Etuh on September 21, 2021, of complicity in the money laundering charges preferred against Francis Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu is wrong, unacceptable, and reprehensible."

The group, however, warned the anti-corruption agency that failure to act would lead to the filing of Mandamus Proceedings at the Federal High Court Abuja to compel it to do the needful

On its part, the EFCC acknowledged receipt of the petition on Thursday 11th July 2024 and is expected to investigate the allegations.

If found guilty, Etuh could face severe penalties, including imprisonment.

*NANS Condemns Attempt to Use Students Against EFCC*

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has dissociated itself from any planned protests or struggles against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, NANS condemned attempts by faceless groups to manipulate students for their own purposes.

"We strongly condemn the attempt to use students by these shadowy groups to intimidate the EFCC and distract it from its vital mission of ridding the country of corruption," Emonefe said.

"Nigerian students and NANS stand in full support of the EFCC and its mandate to combat economic and financial crimes."

NANS expressed concern about reports of students being targeted and recruited to undermine the EFCC's efforts, which are crucial for defending the country's image, prestige, and economic well-being.

The body urged students to remain vigilant and not allow themselves to be used as pawns by corrupt elements seeking to derail the progress being made by the EFCC.

"We recognise the significant impact of the Commission's work in restoring Nigeria's integrity and ensuring a secure future for all citizens," Emonefe said.

"We are ready to play our part in supporting the Commission and ensuring that Nigeria's reputation is restored and preserved on the global stage."

NANS called on parents, guardians, and educational institutions to be aware of these manipulative tactics and to guide their wards appropriately.

The group reaffirmed its unwavering support for the EFCC and its efforts to eradicate corruption and cybercrime.

Lawyer Drags First Bank Before CBN Over Allegation Of N550m Fraud


A civil society organisation, Centre For Socio and Economic Justice, has dragged First Bank of Nigetia before the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over allegation of funds diversion to the tune of N550m.

The centre called on the CBN to revoke the license of First Bank of Nigeria for unsafe practices and adding customer's finds are supposed to be safe with the bank.

According to a letter dated May 29, 2024, the Director of the centre, Barrister U. I. Mohammed, said a customer of the Bank, Dr. Agbai Eke Agbai, who has been a dedicated and resourceful customer of the First Bank of Nigeria Ltd “First Bank” with Fixed Deposit Account numbers – 6924010002639 and 5021000788976 whose funds amount to the tune of ₦ 550,000,000.00 was illegally diverted, misappropriated and fraudulently taken by the bank.

A copy of the letter received at the Security Services Department of the CBN which was also sent to First Bank said a staff of the bank, Mrs. Shamlar Abosi, who is supposed to be the account officer of Dr Agbai, illegally tampered with her client's account.

Parts of the petition titled, "PETITION AGAINST FIRST BANK OF NIGERIA FOR FRAUD, DIVERSION AND MISAAPROPRIATION OF FUNDS BELONGING TO DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI" read, "In 2014, Mrs. Shamlar Abosi, a staff of First Bank approached DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI to deposit funds in First Bank for a Return on Investment, DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI after listening to the advice of Mrs. Shamlar Abosi accepted to deposit funds in the bank for an agreed interest rate.

"Fixed Deposit Accounts were subsequently opened for DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI with the above-mentioned account numbers. The sum of ₦ 300,000,000.00 (Three Hundred Million Naira) only was deposited in Account number-6924010002639 which took effect on the 21st day of February, 2018 with interest rate of 14.5% with 364 days tenor, and the sum of ₦250,000,000.00 (Two Hundred and Fifty Million Naira) only was deposited in Account Number -5021000788976 which took effect on the 19th day of October, 2018 with interest rate of 14.5% with 364days tenor.

"After the maturity date of the investment which is on the 20th of February, 2019 and 18th of October, 2019 respectively, In September, 2023, DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI informed First Bank of his intention not to renew the investment and requested his money to be transferred to his saving Account domiciled with the bank with Account number-3079342444 immediately.

"Unfortunately, the money requested by DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI to be transferred to his savings account has not been credited till date after numerous effort to remind the bank of its failure to carry out the request.

"It is also noteworthy and remarkable that Mrs. Shamlar Abosi who persuaded DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI into investing in the Bank, who is also the account officer and business manager of the investment has failed to provide explanation regarding the money of DR. AGBAI EKE AGBAI."

Barrister Mohammed said it is without doubt that the funds deposited in the Fixed Deposit Account numbers – 6924010002639 and 5021000788976 by Dr. Agbai Eke Agbai has been criminally and fraudulently diverted by First Bank without his consent or notice.

He said after sending their agent and officer, Mrs. Shamlar Abosi to persuade him into investing in the bank, the Bank has failed to refund the money illegally taken from him despite the numerous pleas, warnings and notices.

"We urge the Central Bank of Nigeria to investigate the fraudulent activities enumerated above, refund the money stolen and illegal diverted by First Bank, and to invoke its powers bestowed on it under Section 12 of the Banks and other Financial Institutions Act, 2020 by revoking the license of First Bank of Nigeria for unsafe practices and other fraudulent dealings", the centre said.

A coalition of civil society groups has commended the Governor of Niger State, Governor Umar Bago, for his exemplary leadership and remarkable achievements in various sectors, particularly in agriculture and infrastructure development.

The North Central Transformation Ambassadors, at a press conference held in Abuja, praised Governor Bago's administration for its commitment to transforming the state's economy and improving the lives of citizens.

In his address, the convener of the group, Dauda Yakubu, said the Governor's innovative approach to governance has made Niger State a model state in the north-central region.

Yakubu added that the Governor has has brought about a new era of development and prosperity in the entire zone, highlighted by his transparency, accountability and integrity.

”Since assuming office, Governor Bago has hit the ground running, taking governance to unprecedented heights. His few months in office have been nothing short of remarkable. Beyond mere enthusiasm, he has translated his vision into tangible action, expending extraordinary energy to address long-standing challenges that had plagued the state for years,” the statement said.

”Governor Bago’s leadership has been marked by a clear vision and goal for a “Transformative Niger”, by being focused on providing social amenities, sustainable economy, good governance, and urban renewal. In response to the fuel subsidy removal, Governor Bago’s administration awarded a contract for the purchase of 200 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to provide free transportation to students and at a subsidized rate for civil servants. This initiative has alleviated the burden of transportation costs for the citizens, especially students and civil servants, demonstrating the governor’s commitment to the welfare of the people.

”Furthermore, Governor Bago has prioritized education and healthcare, recognizing these sectors as crucial pillars for the advancement of any society. His administration has invested significantly in revamping educational institutions, ensuring that the youth of Niger State have access to quality education and the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.

It’s no news anymore that Niger State has attracted over a billion dollars in Agric business investments since the inception of his administration in 2023.

“Through strategic investments in agricultural infrastructure and provision of support to farmers, his administration has significantly bolstered the agricultural sector, thereby stimulating economic growth, fostering a sense of pride and self-sufficiency among the people of Niger State, and contributing substantially to the state's food security.”

The group further said Governor Bago's leadership has brought hope and renewed confidence to the people of Niger State, urging him to continue his good work.

While calling on other state governors to emulate Governor Bago's leadership model, which they described as “people-centred and development-oriented” Yakubu called on Nigerlites and indeed the entire north-central to continue to support the governor.

A group of concerned citizens and stakeholders across the country gathered on Friday at the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly Abuja, calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing crisis affecting the Kano Emirate.

The protesters, who marched peacefully, carried signs and banners expressing their concerns about the escalating situation in Kano. They urged President Tinubu to use his good offices to resolve the crisis and ensure the restoration of peace and stability in the state.

Recall that Governor Abba Yusuf dissolved the five Emirates Council and reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano. This came after the governor signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law.

Under the auspices of the Concerned Patriots of Nigeria, the group said Governor Yusuf has taken his abuse of office to another level by dissolving the traditional council.

“A lot had been going wrong in the state but the Concerned Patriots of Nigeria had thought it best to allow Kano state to sort out its thorny issues. However, Thursday’s brash actions of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, who sacked five emirs to reappoint Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the 14th Emir of Kano has awoken us to the urgency of raising the alarm about the destructive excesses of the state governor, “ coordinator Abdullahi Muhammed Saleh said.

“Since being sworn into office, Governor Abba Yusuf has a string of loutish acts that run like a hardened criminal’s rap sheet. All in the name of rubbishing his predecessor, he started with a demolition spree that has served to impoverish the people whose lives he took an oath to improve. Thus he proved himself to be anti-people.

“The governor then attempted to destroy the structures of political parties in the state. The impish fanaticism with which he pursued this illicit mission saw him intruding into the structure of other political parties, including hiring some charlatans who purportedly suspended the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who is interestingly his predecessor. Thus he proved himself to be anti-democratic.

“This latest stunt of sacking five emirs to install his acolyte was achieved by manipulating the Kano State House of Assembly, which he had successfully turned into a rubber stamp for endorsing his illegal acts. He has eroded the autonomy guaranteed by the separation of powers as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“It is inconceivable that any right-thinking person will descend low to the point of manipulating the traditional institution for political gimmicks. The humiliation meted out to the five emirs was most unbecoming and we have cause to believe that Abba Yusuf has set the stage for using the traditional institution as ancient and as esteemed as that of Kano for a political seesaw will continue since his successor will revert to the five emirates. The Kano governor has thus proven himself to be the anti-traditional institution leader.”

The Concerned Patriots of Nigeria, therefore, condemned the actions of the Kano State Governor in the strongest terms possible given its anti-reason disposition.

“The governor’s choice of actions flies in the face of reason and has no place in a sane and civilised society. We urge Governor Yusuf to retrace his steps and stop further undermining the peace of Kano state and by implication the peace in Nigeria,” the statement added.

“We also condemn the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) – dominated Kano State House of Assembly that they have cemented their place as a conclave of shame to have reverted into a mere rubber stamp for the megalomanic tantrums of the state governor.

“They, alongside Governor Yusuf, have taken their desperation to an extent that could set the ancient city on fire and cause breaches in the land. We are here today to appeal to President Tinubu to intervene in the Kano Emirate crisis.

“The situation would deteriorate by the day, and we need the President's urgent attention to prevent further breakdown of law and order. We believe that President Tinubu's intervention is crucial at this critical moment. We are counting on his leadership to find a lasting solution to the crisis and ensure peace returns to Kano State."

Benue: Political Parties Raise Alarm Over Authoritarian Rule, Anti- Democratic Policies of Fr. Alia's Government.


The Coalition of Political Parties in Benue State and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have raised alarm over authoritarian rule and anti- Democratic policies of Reverend Father Alia in Benue state.


The group while releasing its  one-year assessment report on the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia in Abuja on Thursday described it as  the worst since the return of democracy in 1999.


The parties are the Accord Party,  APGA, Zenith Labour Party, Boot , APM, NRM, APP, ADC as well as the NNPP


Tor Aondofa Paul of the National Rescue Movement,  Simon Ogbe of the Zenith Labour Party and  Bishop Benson Ijachi   of the  Accord Party who addressed the media said the governor has failed in security, transparency and accountability.


They further lamented that the administration has become synonymous with corruption, disregard for the rule of law, unfulfilled promises, abuse of office as well as thuggery.  


"We all know that the primary responsibility of every government is the protection of lives and property. Since Governor Alia assumed power, the security situation in Benue State has deteriorated as compared to how it has been in the last four years. Since he assumed office, no single operational vehicle has been bought for the security agents in Benue State to support their operations in the state," the statement said.


"We have witnessed a massive influx of cows and armed Fulani herdsmen in the state despite the existence of the law prohibiting open Grazing in Benue State. These herdsmen are complicit in the renewed insecurity in the state as they have been fingered in several killings and attacks on innocent Benue people in Guma, Logo, Gwer-Wesr, Makurdi, Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Gwer-East, Kwande, Ukum and Ado local government areas of the state. Just a few weeks ago the chief of staff to former governor Samuel Ortom, Pastor Terwase Orbunde was attacked on his farm along the Welfare quarters - Mobile Police barracks road in the heart of Makurdi. While Orbunde survived the attack with bullet wounds, his wife and house help were kidnapped. They were only released a few days later after a ransom was paid to the herders.


On corruption, transparency and accountability, the statement added: "The Alia administration is notorious for total disregard for due process and the rule of law. Shortly after Governor Alia assumed office, the governor without constituting an executive council awarded a contract to the tune of N6 billion, an amount which is 120 times higher than the approval limit of the governor at the time the contract was awarded. Most of these contracts were neither approved by the previous Benue State Executive Council nor captured in the 2023 budget.


"We are all witnesses to the governor's total disregard for the rule of law. Less than 4 weeks in office, the governor sacked and replaced democratically elected local government council chairmen and councillors in the state with a caretaker committee despite a judgment by the National Industrial Court restraining him from doing so. Governor then went further to approach a court of coordinate jurisdiction (Benue State High Court) seeking to set aside the judgment of the National Industrial Court, Makurdi Division, which restrained him from sacking the 23 elected local government chairmen and councillors.


"In Benue State today, Governor Hyacinth Alia has not disclosed the wage bill of the state, all the revenue accruals to the state from Federation Allocation Account Committee (FAAC), internally Generated Revenue (IGR) grants and Special Interventions from the FG. Even the palliatives from the federal government to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal were only disclosed after much pressure from the opposition for the governor to do so.


"The administration of Fr. Hyacinth Alia has failed to meet up with his social contract with the people of Benue State. The promise to return the Internally Displaced Persons, (IDPs) to their ancestral homes, and clear all the salary and pension arrears within 100 days have remained a mirage. The governor is doing the opposite of what he promised during campaigns.


"Under the reign of Governor Hyacinth Alia, abuse of freedom of speech, threat to fundamental human rights and gagging of the press is the order of the day. Just a few weeks ago, the member representing Vandeikya/Konshisha in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sesoo Gboko was forcefully stopped from worshipping his creator (God) at a Thanksgiving organized in his honour at Tsuwe Daka, Shangev-Tiev, Konshisha local government area of Benue State by thugs allegedly sponsored by the caretaker chairman of Konshisha local government area, Philip Achua and the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Aondowase Kunde.


"Up till now, Governor Hyacinth Alia has not condemned the violation of the fundamental human rights of the federal lawmaker by his appointees. The right of political parties to assemble freely has also been taken away from them. In Benue State, the governor for selfish reasons, has placed a ban on political gatherings, where people perceived to be his opponents, including members of his party(APC) are barred from meeting because of their loyalty to the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume."


On the resurgence of thuggery: "Thuggery disappeared from Benue Politics in 2015. From May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023, thuggery was not part of Benue Politics as no political party patronized thugs as those dared to indulge in acts of thuggery were dealt with according to the law, be it under an APC or PDP administration.


"However, with the emergence of Hyacinth Alia as governor, thuggery has been elevated to the status of a state religion. The administration of Rev. Fr. Alia has reintroduced thuggery in the state under the guise of Benue State Central Youths. A good number of the so-called central youths are reputed for criminality and thuggery."


The group, therefore, called on President Bola Tinubu to beam his searchlight on the state of the affairs in Benue State and intervene to curtail the executive rascality, corruption, abuse of the fundamental rights of Benue citizens, total disregard of the rule of law and all the anti-democratic tendencies of the Alia administration.
