Education / RLC & DAAD Offer Phd Scholarship On Oil Research by naijaunion: 6:23pm On Mar 06, 2017
The Right Livelihood College (RLC) at the
Center for Development Research (ZEF),
University of Bonn, Germany, offers a DAAD-
funded PhD research scholarship on: “Oil
dependency and bioeconomic transformation
in Nigeria”
Background
The Right Livelihood College (RLC) is a
global transdisciplinary education and
research initiative of universities and the
“Alternative Nobel Prize”, the Right
Livelihood Award (RLA). There are currently
RLC Campuses at eight universities
worldwide, among others at ZEF, University
of Bonn, Germany, and at the University of
Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
As part of this network, the RLC Campus
Bonn and the German Academic Exchange
Service (DAAD), in cooperation with the
“Alternative Nobel Prize” Laureate Nnimmo
Bassey and the STRIVE [Sustainable TRade
and InnoVation transfer in the bioEconomy:
from national strategies to global sustainable
development goals] project, offer a 3-year
PhD scholarship for candidates from sub-
Saharan Africa to carry out a PhD research
project related to the potential role of the
bioeconomy in reducing the Nigerian
economy’s reliance on fossil fuel resources.
Research context
Nigeria’s economy is highly dependent on
fossil fuel exports and thus exposed to a
volatile global market environment. Bio-
based economic transformation is often
proposed as a promising strategy to reduce
fossil resource dependency and achieve
sustainable development goals. However, the
nature and outcomes of potential
bioeconomic transformation pathways will
depend on a complex interplay of factors,
such as prices for oil and other Nigerian
export products including from agriculture,
access to bio-based knowledge and
technology, and economic as well as
environmental policies.
The PhD research project is expected to
adopt a regional or macro-perspective to
analyze the role of these factors and the
economic mechanisms through which they
affect sustainability outcomes of alternative
development pathways for the Nigerian
economy. The research will be based on
field and secondary data collection in
Nigeria.
Applicants are requested to develop their
own PhD research proposal to contextualize
and concretize the envisaged research
project.
The PhD scholarships
Qualified applicants should be citizens and
residents of a sub-Saharan African state.
They should hold an excellent master’s or
equivalent degree in agricultural or natural
resource economics, economics or related
disciplines, and have experience in the use
of computable general equilibrium models,
partial equilibrium models, or input- output
models. Experience in interdisciplinary and
international research teams is an asset.
Fluency in English is mandatory. The age
limit is 32 years.
The scholarship is funded by the DAAD for
3 years starting from August 1, 2017. It
covers a Junior Researcher position at ZEF
and all respective costs for travel and
research. In the first year, the candidate will
participate in the international ZEF Doctoral
Program in Bonn, followed by time for
empirical field research in Nigeria. Oil
dependency and bioeconomic transformation

The Director General of NYSC, Brig-Gen Suleiman Kazure who stated this in Ibadan at the opening ceremony of the training workshop on Biometric Clearance of Corps Members in Local Government Areas in SouthWest with the theme “Ensuring Accountability in Corps members activities using ICT, said that biometric technology will not only address absenteeism during service year but will also address the problems of irregular signatures leading to non-payment of monthly allowance, and poor collation and storage of data of corps members. The training was organised for all heads of corps inspection and monitoring branches, ICT desk officers, zonal and local government inspectors of the South-West. Kazure, who was represented by NYSC Director of Corps Welfare, Mrs Victoria Okakwu said, “This new process has received great ovation from the public for its positive impact in areas such as elimination of sharp practices perpetuated by fraudulent individuals and reduction of errors in our data and workload on our staffs, corps memners and other stakeholders. “Furthermore, the improvement on the new process also brought about the introduction of the use of biometrics for mobilisation and registration of corps members at orientation camps which has not only helped in fast tracking the process, but also reduced impersonation and registration in prozy including ineligible graduates

Education / UI 2016/2017 Newly Approved Grading System by naijaunion: 11:23pm On Feb 25, 2017
I refer to my memoranda of 25 February and 2 March, 2016 respectively on the above subject matter
The referenced memos were specifically on the implementation of the new 4-Point Grading System which was subsequently put on hold until the 2016/2017 Session due to some logistic constraints. The implementation is due this academic session (2016/2017).
Consequently, I write to inform you of Senate’s decision, at its meeting of 18 July, 2016, on the New Grading System and Minimum Units to be registered for and passed by students at each level, as well as Change in the status of GES courses in the University as follows: 1. The average minimum units taken at each Level should be 40 units. 2. The minimum units to be passed at each Level by students in order to proceed to the next Level should be 60% of 40 units. 3. All GES courses, with the exception of the “ Use of English I & II (GES 101 and 201) ”, should be made to acquire the status of REQUIRED COURSES. 4. The 4-Point Scale Grading System should be adopted in order to align with other universities world-wide and the recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The above implies that the recommended Average Minimum Units expected of the students to take/register for is now 40 units (for the new intakes: 100 Level) as against the old 30 units. Given this development, the regulations guiding withdrawal of students in the University in respect of the new system are as follows:
