Adenekan, who resides at No. 27A Olaogun Road, Olaogun Bus-Stop in Ogun, was docked on charges bordering on theft and willful damage, offences he denied committing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Ishiola Samuel, had told the court that Adenekan committed the alleged offences on Sept. 9, 2018, at Ikeja.

CrimeIG Special Squad Hits South-west In Two Weeks- Adamu by nairapark(op): 12:36pm On Aug 08, 2019
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, is to deploy a special squad in the South-West in the next two weeks to tackle kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Abdulmajid Ali, said this during a courtesy visit to Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure on Wednesday.

Ali, who was accompanied by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 11, Mr Leye Oyebade, and Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Undie Adie, stated that the special squad had been training in Abuja.
According to him, the main assignment of the squad is to curb crimes in the region.

He said the police were keen on making the country safe for everyone.

The police chief said, “I was sent by the Inspector- General of Police not only to Ondo State, but to other South-West states to see the security architecture on the ground and to see how to redesign the security apparatus.

“I decided to start from Ondo before going to Ekiti and Osun states, because Ondo, being one of the focus states in recent times, I believe we need to sit down with my officers here and see how we can move ahead.

“I want to let you know that the IG is mindful of what has been happening, particularly along the roads as well as the miscreants disturbing the peace of the people.

“I also want you to know that security is one of the first pillars of any government. If security is not provided, there won’t be peace in that area and the governor too will find it difficult to operate.”

Akeredolu, who was represented by his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, expressed concern over the security issues in the state and other South-West states.

He urged the police to arrest the killers of Mrs Funke Olakunri, daughter of the leader of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, saying it was a task that must be done by the force.

He said, “The police must also engage the community. This is very important. Even if you have 200,000 policemen in a community, you need the cooperation of the people in that community for you to be able to carry out your job effectively.”

CrimeEFCC Nabs Monarch For Fertiliser, Herbicide Fraud In Zamfara by nairapark(op): 10:25am On Aug 08, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Sokoto has said it has arrested the Chairman of Rice Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, Gummi Local Government Area chapter, Zamfara State, Ibrahim Rijiya, for alleged diversion of fertiliser and herbicide.
The storekeeper of the council, Aminu Musa, and one Abdullahi Bashir were also arrested in connection with the alleged diversion.

They were said to have criminally diverted three trucks of 1,8
Rijiya, who is also the District Head of Rijiya Gummi, Gummi LGA, was said to have sold each bag of fertiliser for N3,000.

Acting spokesman for the EFCC, Tony Orilade, said in a statement on Wednesday the arrest of the suspects followed a petition by rice farmers in the area.

Representatives of seven different groups of rice farmers had alleged that in July 2018, the Federal Government approved and disbursed 12 trucks of fertiliser and herbicide to 83 cooperative societies in Gummi, adding that no member of the association received the items as approved by the government.

Also, efforts by the Gummi chapter of RIFAN to get the items back reportedly failed.

EFCC investigations, however, revealed that Rijiya allegedly conspired with Musa to divert and sell the fertiliser and herbicide to Bashir for N17.1m.

Orilade said, “The suspects confessed to their roles in the crime while the three trucks of the fertiliser have been recovered from them. Efforts are on to recover the diverted herbicide. They will soon be arraigned.

PoliticsEl-zakzaky, Wife's Visas Being Processed- IMN Leader by nairapark(op): 4:49pm On Aug 07, 2019
Following the granting of medical bail to the embattled leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife , Zeenat, by a Kaduna High Court on Monday, a top leader of the Movement, Dr. Shuaibu Musa, said they were processing their travel documents.
Shuaibu, who spoke with Daily Sun via a telephone in Kaduna, yesterday, also alleged that three of their members died in detention. He claimed the police has refused to release their corpses for burial.

He called for the release of other over 400 members of IMN arrested by the different security forces and currently detained in the custody of the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), some without trial.
“We’re making arrangements because they have to release their passports, they have to do visas for flight and those things will take a while even as urgent as they were at the moment.

“We have other people around the northern prisons in two categories: the first category are those still standing trial for various allegations some of them right from 2015.

“Most of them have their trial stalled because about half of them were freed.Meanwhile, it was the same charge, the same witnesses and what have you the other half were discharged and acquitted.

“The second category, which is a bit worrisome, is the category of those that were arrested alike during that Zaria incident in 2015 but were not brought for trial at all.

“We know they are alive. They were not even shot except a few if them with injuries. They were just arrested and are probably in secret detention.

“They also arrested about 51 during the last protest in Abuja. We know three of them died in custody. Their copses have not been given to us.

“A baby was also arrested together with her mother. Some of them sustained injuries. They were not brought to court or release. If you put all in all together, they are more than 400,” he said.

CrimeBorno: Two Female Suicide Bombers Kill Three, Injure Eight by nairapark(op): 2:37pm On Aug 07, 2019
Two female suicide bombers killed three civilians and wounded eight in a suspected Boko Haram attack in northeast Nigeria, emergency services said Wednesday.
The twin blasts tore through a crowd late Tuesday in the town of Mafa, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from regional capital Maiduguri.

“The female bombers killed three people and wounded eight others,” Bello Danbatta, head of security for the State Emergency Management Agency in Borno state, told AFP
The assailants entered the town among a group of local women who had gone to fetch firewood for cooking, Danbatta said.

Local district spokesman Adamu Mohammed, who gave the same toll, said the bombers waited until around 8:30 pm (1930 GMT) before launching their attack.

Boko Haram has been waging a 10-year insurgency in northeast Nigeria that has seen it repeatedly use female suicide bombers to attack soft targets such as mosques, markets and bus stations.

Many of the bombers are young women and girls.

The last suicide attack was in June when a triple bombing outside a hall where football fans were watching a match killed at least 30 people.

Boko Haram’s decade-long campaign of violence has left some 27,000 people dead, displaced over two million across the region and spilt over into neighbouring countries.

The jihadists have splintered into two major factions after fighters loyal to the Islamic State group broke away from long-time leader Abubakar Shekau in 2016.

Shekau’s Boko Haram group has tended to attack civilian targets, while the Islamic State West Africa Province faction has ratcheted up assaults on the military since July 2018.

CrimeChinese Arrested For Operating Illegal Waste Factory In Lagos by nairapark(op): 12:31pm On Aug 07, 2019
The police have arrested two Chinese for operating an illegal factory dealing in electronics waste in the Ikeja area of Lagos.
It was gathered that men of the Area ‘F’ Command invaded the factory located at No. 19 Sule Abuka Street, Opebi, Ikeja, which had no signboard, and arrested the suspects with several cartons of the waste already billed for export to China and Vietnam by air cargo.

According to a police source, the suspects, Lin Piehao, 22, and Li Ruoneng, 27, are also staying in the country with expired visas.
The source added that the arrest was made following a tip-off on the activities of the Chinese.

“We got a tip-off on their activities and we went to the factory to arrest them. We also discovered that the two brains behind the company were staying in Nigeria illegally. They came to Lagos in May and they were issued one-month visas, but they exceeded their stay and were working in Nigeria illegally,” the source added.

One of the suspects, Piehao, said, “We buy phone panels from phone repairers and scrap sellers. We remove the panels’ IC with a machine and then ship it to China and Vietnam.

“We have some Nigerian casual workers in our factory, but we gave them the rules and asked them to be discreet about what we do before they joined us.

“We actually came to Nigeria with one-month visas to explore the country and know the business we can do, but our boss in China urged us to open the factory and we have been enjoying Nigeria and do not want to go back despite the expiration of our visas.

“I don’t have a work permit; I know it is a crime to work without a work permit, but the electronics waste business is very lucrative. We do a lot to ensure that the smoke from the factory does not affect the environment in which we operate.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said investigation into the matter was ongoing.

He stated, “We have two Chinese in our custody; they are operating the factory illegally, because they actually registered a business, but the purpose for which it was registered is different from what they are using it for now.

“They are emitting poisonous gases, polluting the environment and disturbing the neighbourhood. Investigation into the matter is ongoing.”

“The meeting could have been held at the APC National Secretariat and the President was willing to come but some other reasons made us to shift the venue back to Aso Rock Villa.”

BusinessNigeria Should Learn From Uk's Business Environment -VP by nairapark(op): 10:16am On Aug 02, 2019
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria can benefit from the UK in its ongoing reform of the business environment by learning from how the British resolved similar challenges.
Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement on Thursday, said the Vice President stated this when he met with the UK’s Secretary of State for International Development, Mr Alok Sharma, in Abuja.

According to Osinbajo, one of the critical issues with the ease of doing business is with respect to the registration of property and how the process is long drawn
He said that while states like Lagos and Kano had done well with issues around land registration, there were still some outstanding issues where the UK and Nigeria could collaborate.

Osinbajo said that one of the ways by which Nigeria could get some help was in the whole land registry concept.

He recalled that Lagos actually had such collaboration when he served as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state.

“UK gave us quite a bit of help in establishing what was used in Lagos State land registry years ago.

“Every state has its own peculiar issues and challenges. How to document across the various states is what is now posing a challenge,” he said.

Osinbajo also explained the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), adding that the federal and state governments decided on ranching as an option for livestock breeding.

He said that states would determine the implementation methods in their respective states, both the federal and state governments would share the costs.

Earlier in his remarks, Sharma commended Osinbajo for his role in driving the ease of doing business reforms.

He commended the country for moving up 24 places in the World Bank ease of doing business ranking.

On the specific issue of land registry, he said that the process was simplified in the UK through the use of technology.

The Killin Dem singer pointed out that his relationship with Stefflon was deep and that he would not want the details to be in public space.

HealthNASS Vows Support To Military In Tackling Insecurity by nairapark(op): 2:12pm On Aug 01, 2019
The National Assembly on Wednesday pledged its continued support to the Nigerian military in tackling the current security threats across the country.
The President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, made the pledge at the National Defence College (NDC) Course 27 Graduation Dinner and Award Night in Abuja
Lawan, who was represented by Sen. Michael Nnachi, said that the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North East and other security challenges in other parts of the country required the support of all stakeholders.

According to him, as representatives of the people, we are very much in the frontline of efforts to improve security and development.

“We are indeed, in a good position to enable national discussions to forge alliances between Government, civil society and development partners.

“As such, under my leadership, the National Assembly will decidedly place emphasis on quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the legislative processes to improve security and development.

“You will agree with me that the business of ensuring security for this dear nation of ours cannot be left to the security agencies alone because it is a collective effort.

“In this regard, let me assure you that the 9th Assembly intends to work closely with the Executive, the Ministry of Defence and the leadership of the Services to ensure that members of the Armed Forces are well equipped, properly motivated and well trained,’’ he said.

Lawan also pledged to encourage communication between the NDC and the Senate and House Committees on Defence to initiate mechanisms for enhanced security sector governance and reform in Nigeria.

He says: “I also agree that this interface has become imperative, given the growing need to instill best practices in our security sector and the very important role both institutions play in this regard,’’ he said.

The senate president urged the graduating officers to justify the training they had acquired, saying they were better equipped for higher responsibilities.

“The Course you have just finished has prepared you for strategic leadership and higher level command, particularly at a time, when our nation is faced with a plethora of security challenges.

“The successful completion of this Course implies that you are now better equipped for higher military or other national duties and therefore added responsibilities,’’ he said.

According to him, the administration of Muhammadu Buhari had taken deliberate steps to improve national security, institutional capacity and collaboration with contiguous neighbours.

Earlier, the Commandant of the College, Rear Admiral Mackson Kadiri, said that the college promotes military strategic understanding in the polity and strategic level military training.

Kadiri disclosed that the participants of the Course 27 numbering 127 had passed through a vigorous 11 months processes of the Higher Defence and Strategic Studies course.

“They are now better informed and wiser. More importantly, they are now more capable, willing and ready to serve their nations in any capacity.”

PoliticsNorth-east Humanitarian Crisis Not Over, Says UN by nairapark(op): 12:26pm On Aug 01, 2019
The United Nations has marked 10 years of the Boko Haram insurgency and humanitarian crisis in the North-East of Nigeria, saying the crisis is far from over.
The UN Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon, stated this in Abuja on Wednesday, noting that the insurgents’ attack on Nganzai in Borno State last week where “more than 50 innocent civilians lost their lives” was a reminder that the conflict was still raging.

This is just as the Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Mala Buni, stated at the gathering that more than seven million residents of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa were still in need of humanitarian assistance.
Kallon said, “Ten years ago, clashes at the Maiduguri’s central mosque claimed the lives of about 700 people. This incident was a precursor to what has now become a regionalised armed conflict with non-state armed groups and one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

“We are gathered together in grave concern for the hundreds of thousands of people who are still trapped in areas we cannot reach to provide them urgent lifesaving humanitarian assistance. More than five million people last year had food on their plates, thanks to our combined efforts.

“Nearly two million Nigerians, who are internally displaced, have found refuge in camps managed together by humanitarians and state agencies. This year alone, more than one million children received measles vaccinations.

“In February 2019, we built an entirely new camp in Maiduguri for the tens of thousands who fled insecurity in northern Borno State.”

Buni noted that the government would do more than humanitarian assistance and ensure the “recreation, reconstruction and resettlements of people.”

He said, “In the years since it began, the Boko Haram has become the worst humanitarian crisis in our lifetime. Yobe State is only second to Borno in terms of devastation and disruption by the terrorists.”

There are now more than seven million people in the three affected states that are still in need of dire humanitarian assistance.

“Prior to the crisis, the North-East was the lowest in development in relation to the rest of the country particularly in education and infrastructure. Many believe that poverty, joblessness and ignorance are some of the factors that have aided the insurgency.”

CrimeKidnapped Post-utme Candidate Recounts Experience In Herdsmen's Den by nairapark(op): 10:35am On Aug 01, 2019
A 16-year-old girl, Chinyere, has narrated how suspected Fulani herdsmen abducted her and other co-travellers at the Okada junction on the Benin-Ore Expressway, Edo State.
The victim said she was held for five days as the herdsmen tortured the men in the group with sticks, guns and cutlasses.

The Abia State indigene told our correspondent that they were released after paying different sums as ransom.
The matter was said to have been reported at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters, Benin City.

Chinyere explained that she was going to sit the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination at the Abia State University, Uturu, when the incident happened on Saturday, July 20, 2019.

She said, “I boarded a Sienna vehicle at the Volks motor park in Badagry, Lagos State, and we embarked on the journey around 8am. When we got to the Okada junction around 6pm, we saw two tankers blocking a side of the road.

“Suddenly, some men came out of the bush wielding guns, sticks and cutlasses. Our driver saw them from afar, opened the door and ran away. Three other passengers also fled. Those people then came and took us away. Four of us were abducted that day.

“We trekked a long distance into the bush. We were camped in an open space. By night, they started calling our family members with our phones. They gave us the phones to talk to them so that our families would know our condition. They demanded N10m from each of our families.”

She explained that on the first and second days, the herdsmen did not provide any food for them.

However, on Monday, she said rice was prepared as the only meal for the day.

Chinyere stated, “They cooked beans on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we ate eba. We were eating once a day.

“My set was abducted on Saturday. On Sunday, the abductors came with more people; we were all eight –five females and three males. They tortured the men a lot with their big cow sticks. They did not do anything to the females.”

She said the suspected Fulani herdsmen continued bargaining with each victim’s family, as they asked how much had been raised as ransom.

Asked how she knew that the men were Fulani, she said, “Their language! They were six and were fully armed. Each of them had a gun. They communicated more with each other in their language, but spoke occasionally to us in English. At a point, they started saying they were tired of keeping us and they needed to go and abduct more people.

“Shortly after they abducted the second set of victims, we heard gunshots between them and the police. It lasted for about one and a half hours. We learnt that they killed a policeman during the exchange of fire.

“In the end, they collected N200,000 each from the families of three of us. A Yoruba Muslim man paid N50,000. Two sisters, who were abducted with their friend, paid N1.5m and were released earlier than the rest of us. One lady, who told them that she was an orphan and without any relative, was freed without any ransom, because there was nobody to call.”

Chinyere said the herdsmen asked the families to pay the ransom into the account of the relative of one of the victims, who lives in Benin, and the woman was then instructed to bring all the money.

The teenager described her experience as hellish, adding that they were beaten by the rain twice.

She said she reported the incident at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters in Benin, adding that she was also admitted to hospital for check-up and treatment.

Chinyere stated that because of the experience, she could not sit the post-UTME and might have to wait for another year.

The victim’s father, Eze Ikechukwu, stated that he borrowed money to raise the ransom.

He decried the attitude of the people at the Badagry motor park, saying though they confirmed the abduction of the passengers, they refused to help him.

The father of four explained that his daughter’s ordeal had shown him that there was no security in the country.

“How can kidnapping and armed robbery happen on the same Benin-Ore road where there are many police checkpoints? When I went to report in Benin, the police told me that the weapons that those herdsmen had were more sophisticated than theirs and they could not risk their lives. So, how do you convince me that there is security in that kind of situation?” he queried.

The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, said he would call back our correspondent to respond to questions on the incident, but had yet to do so as of press time.

PoliticsNUJ Condemns Allege Attack On A Pregnant Journalist, 20 Others By Lawmaker by nairapark(op): 4:46pm On Jul 31, 2019
The National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo on Wednesday condemned the alleged attack, assault and threats to life on a pregnant female journalist and twenty other journalists by a member of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mr Nkemka Onuma and his alleged political thugs numbering over 40 who carried dangerous weapons.
Thugs allegedly led by the member representing Afikpo South West constituency in the Assembly, Nkemka Onuma allegedly descended on the journalists and inflicted injuries on them, especially that of the Nation newspaper, Ogochukwu Anioke, Pilot Newspaper Samson Nwafor and a pregnant journalist, Mrs. Grace Egbo of the Tribune Newspaper who was also hit on her stomach and face.

Isiguzo who condemned the action of Onuma and the thugs demanded that the lawmaker should tender an unreserved apology for their action.
He also ordered that the medical bills of the victims should be taken care of by the lawmaker.

“I am yet to get the full details of what really happened in Ebonyi State House of Assembly but if what we read is anything to go by, it is shocking and totally unbecoming for an Honourable member of a House of Assembly to have abandoned his legislative duty to begin to unleash mayhem on innocent journalists in Ebonyi State.

“It is totally unacceptable to us and we demand that Ebonyi State House of Assembly should not just apologize to those people that were manhandled, they should also make sure that they are taken care of in the hospital because I learnt that one or two of those people is already in the hospital. So, they should take care of their bills in the hospital and assure us of their safety in that House of Assembly.

“There is no way that the legislature which is, of course, part of the ingredients of democracy in governance will still be the one to cause trouble or problem to the safety of journalists in Ebonyi state. so, the attack is totally unacceptable and we think in the next couple of hours, the House of Assembly should do the needful”.

On the threat to prevent journalists from covering activities of the Assembly, Isiguzo said, “the lawmaker in question does not have powers to stop journalists from covering the Assembly as he threatened. It is a public place and it does not belong to that particular lawmaker or the Speaker, it is a public institution and they don’t have right or such powers to bar any journalist from covering the state House of Assembly, it will never happen. If they try it, we will take the next line of action. They can’t even try it, the lawmaker was only trying to grandstand,” he stated.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Tuesday said the force had commenced the process of implementing the Community Policing initiative.
He said 40,000 Community Policing Officers would be engaged in the interim to serve as special constables.

Adamu, who said this at the monthly IG conference with senior police officers in Abuja on Tuesday, noted that the strategies being implemented to address insecurity across the country were yielding fruits.
He pointed out that between January and July, 4,187 high profile suspects had been arrested nationwide.

This, he said, included 1,629 armed robbery suspects, 1,053 suspected kidnappers, 1,023 cultists and 482 murder suspects.

In addition, he disclosed that 1,181 firearms including improvised explosive devices and rocket launchers were recovered during police operations within the same period.

Adamu added that 389 stolen vehicles were also recovered from criminal elements, while 506 kidnapped victims were rescued, including the 300 hostages that were freed in Zamfara State.

In order to sustain the momentum, the IG said his administration had commenced the process of implementing the Community Policing initiative, noting that 40,000 CPOs would be engaged in the interim to serve as special constables.

PoliticsNo Intention Of Grooming Successor -buhari by nairapark(op): 12:06pm On Jul 31, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has said he will not name who will succeed him in 2023. Receiving members of the group at the State House, Abuja, Buhari pointed out that dabbling into the issue of succession would only create problems for his administration.

The group was led on the visit by its convener, Dr Bolarenwa Bolaji.

The President said, “Succession is very funny because if I did find anybody, I will create more problems for him or her. Let those who want to be President try as much as I did.”

Buhari told the group to seize the opportunities provided by their education to reform Nigeria and bequeath a better country to the next generations.

He added, “A lot of our young people are taking things for granted. Imagine contesting elections three times and ending up in the Supreme Court; it takes a lot of conviction and hard work. But, people take things for granted; they say I want to be the President. As if I just closed my eyes and opened them and I got it.”

Buhari said the Almajeri system, which is prevalent in the North, needed collaborative roles by government at all levels to address the problem.

He disclosed that since 2015, more than N1tn had been injected into basic education through the Universal Basic Education Commission and other organs of government.

“We also released N25bn to public universities to pay earned academic allowances to lecturers. Of course, you are all aware of the rot we uncovered in the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board and many other institutions.”

The President further made projections on what to expect in his second term.

He said, “In the next four years, we shall continue with the work to transform the sector bearing in mind our high population growth rate, financial challenges and security issues especially those grossly affected areas. Simply put, our focus and agenda can only be sustained if we have educated and secured society.”

He added that anyone who wanted to become the President of Nigeria must work for it just like he did three times before he finally succeeded in 2015 at the fourth attempt.

Buhari said this on Tuesday in reaction to a request by a group, the Progressive in Academics, who urged him to groom young Nigerians to succeed him.

CrimeLagos Police Launch Manhunt For Businesswoman's Abductors by nairapark(op): 10:15am On Jul 31, 2019
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the kidnappers of a businesswoman, Gbemisola Alabi, who was reportedly abducted while jogging on the Monastery Road in the Sangotedo area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the 35-year-old, who left her house around 6am on Sunday to keep fit, was accosted by some gunmen.

Gbemisola’s husband, Olamide, told our correspondent that he became worried when efforts to contact her proved abortive, adding that she had planned to visit his mother on the fateful day.
The engineer said, “I work in Port Harcourt but my family is in Lagos. My wife had planned to visit my mother on Sunday and because I knew that she normally jogged in the morning, I called her around 10am to find out her preparations for the visit. I knew she didn’t go jogging with her phone when my daughter picked the call and said her mum was not back.

“When I called again around 11am, my wife did not pick; it was the same around noon and 1pm. I became worried and called our family members and neighbours to help me search for her around the area where she normally jogged.”

During the search, one of the neighbours, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said people in the area told them that gunmen abducted a woman earlier in the day, adding that personnel of the Ogombo Police Station were following up the lead.

The neighbour said, “When we found out that she was not back from jogging, we mobilised and started searching for her along her usual route. But, while searching, some people told us that some guys, who came in a tricycle, shot into the air and whisked away a woman.

“We have informed her family and also reported at the Ogombo Police Station and their officers are following up the lead.”

Gbemisola’s brother, Adewale, while lamenting the disappearance of the Osun State indigene, urged the police to investigate the matter, rescue the victim and arrest the perpetrators.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said personnel of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command had been deployed with a view to rescuing the woman.

“We are investigating the case; we have deployed our specialists from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to rescue the woman. At first, it was a case of a missing person, but we have now established that she was kidnapped. We have launched a manhunt for those involved in the crime,” Elkana said.

PoliticsBoko Haram : New Video On Sharibu Disturbing --presidency by nairapark(op): 12:03pm On Jul 26, 2019
The Presidency said on Thursday that a new video released by Boko Haram, showing captives was disturbing and called for urgent action by the relevant security agencies.
It said urgent efforts must be made to secure the release of the captives, including Leah Sharibu and the last of the Dapchi schoolgirls still being held by the terrorist group.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, the Presidency noted that the captives included humanitarian aid workers and a religious leader.
It stated, “The Presidency has been briefed by the responsible government agency about the disturbing video showing our citizens, the humanitarian aid workers held captive.

“Presidency has been given assurances that contact is being made and the captors are being talked to.

“Besides these aid workers, there are some others about whom this engagement is about — Leah Sharibu, a religious leader and all the others.

“These discussions have been ongoing even before this time and what this latest incident has done is to bring urgency to the efforts that the secret service is making.

“Government is making contacts, in the hope that the captors will see reason to not visit hardship or even harm on these innocent individuals. Government is working.” The Punch could not verify the claims made in the video.

Sharibu was among the 112 girls kidnapped from the Girls Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State by Boko Haram members on February 19, 2018.

The Chairman, Chibok Community in Abuja, Mr Tsambido Abana, told The PUNCH he was not aware of Sharibu’s reported death.

A member of the #BringBackOurGirls group, Aisha Yesufu, also declined comment, saying she could not verify the video.

CAN spokesman, Pastor Bayo Oladeji, said the Christian body was trying to verify the claims in the video, adding that he would issue a statement on Friday (Today).

“We have asked our contacts in Maiduguri to find out about Sharibu’s condition and once we have the right information, I would issue a statement,” he added.

PoliticsNo Reason For NASS Intervention In Edo Crisis -APC Chair by nairapark(op): 10:33am On Jul 26, 2019
Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Anselm Ojezua, has said the National Assembly does not have any reason to intervene in the crisis rocking the state House of Assembly.
Ojezua, who said this in a statement on Thursday, said the intervention of the National Assembly in the state parliament crisis was an impediment to the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The party chairman said since the matter had been taken to the court, the National Assembly ought to have waited for it to be determined there.
He, however, said the people of the state would protect their independence if there was the need to do so, stressing that the state was a federating unit of the country and should not be treated as a colony of the Federal Government.

Ojezua said, “We await the court’s decision but as a party, we are also taking steps to seek reconciliation of our members in the House of Assembly . If you recall, when the House of Assembly was inaugurated there were nine members but today they are 12.

“There is a prospect that the number will increase. I think what has actually been an impediment to a peaceful political resolution is the intervention of the National Assembly. If their intention is to come and help us in Edo, I think they have somewhat compounded our problem.”

He argued that the assembly had been duly inaugurated because the nine members formed a quorum.

He added, “You see, we don’t even believe that the National Assembly has any business in this matter. We don’t even believe that it is right for them to take steps. But you know that we are obliged to be polite to them when they come calling for very obvious reasons. So, we made all the facts known because if we had rebuffs them the tendency would have been to believe that we have something to hide.

“They have come and they have all the facts. What are the facts? That the seventh House of Assembly was inaugurated, that a leadership is in place and that they are actually functioning and that the matter is in court. With all that knowledge, what we expect them to report and to recommend is that in the light of all these facts there should be political solutions and also watch the judicial pronouncement.

“They didn’t do that rather they could not even wait for the National Assembly process to be completed before they went to town and therefore they may have justified speculations in town arising from an audio where one of the members-elect was boasting that the matter has been resolved and that the Senate President and Speaker of the House have been told what to do. And three days after, they did which the boy said.

“That has compounded our problem rather than helping to resolve it. That is why I said when their energy is dissipated we will continue our reconciliation. We were on course before this. This thing you are seeing will be resolved. This is not the first time we are having issues in Edo State House of Assembly. If the need arises, we will do anything we have to do to protect our independence in the state.”

PoliticsICAN Demands Execution Of Sanwo-olu's Agenda by nairapark(op): 2:56pm On Jul 25, 2019
The National President of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria, Nnamdi Okwuadigbo, has said the THEMES agenda of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, can engender all-round development of the state.
Okwuadigbo spoke in Lagos at the 9th Annual Lecture of ICAN, themed, ‘Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy: Prospects and Challenges.’
THEMES is an acronym for Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Environment, Education and Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, and Entertainment and Tourism and Security.

The ICAN president, who was represented at the event by the 1st Vice President of the institute, Mrs Comfort Eyitayo, said Sanwo-Olu had shown readiness to resolve the challenges facing the state.

“Recall that the governor immediately upon assuming office signed an executive order on indiscriminate refuse dumping, traffic management and public works. To a greater extent and with the recent move by the governor, one can confidently say that Mr Sanwo-Olu is walking the talk beyond mere words,” the ICAN president stated in a statement on Wednesday.

The Lagos State Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mr Samson Ajibade, said the state government would continue to support members of the association.

One of the guest lecturers at the event, Dr John Ekundayo, urged the state government to invest more in health care by having one primary health centre per ward in all the 57 local government areas and local council development areas of the state.

PoliticsAdamu Adamu: Corruption Still Ongoing In Buhari's Government by nairapark(op): 2:40pm On Jul 25, 2019
The former Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has explained that corruption was still a menace and was ongoing in Buhari’s government despite spirited efforts to stop it.
Reacting to questions when he was being screened among the first batch of the nominees on Wednesday, he said, there was systemic corruption in Buhari’s government, adding that it was only the legislature that could tackle it through laws and policies.

“Corruption in Nigeria is systemic. People have been prosecuted and assets seized, but corruption is still ongoing”, the former Minister of Education said.
Speaking on appointment of Vice Chancellors in Nigerian Universities, he disclosed that appointment of VCs had taken an ethnic dimension in Nigeria.

“Considering the appointment of Vice Chancellor, I know what it means because I have always been under pressure from the people of the affected States who says appointment of Vice Chancellor must be somebody from their area.

“Unfortunately, appointment of Vice Chancellors no longer lies with the University or in the hands of the Ministry.

“Before, the University use to select, bring it to the Minister and the Minister takes it to the President, but now, it’s for the Minister’s information.

“On the issue of Open University, it is not a question of the trending issue, but what the Ministry is going to do in order to expand educational opportunities for the people; most countries are introducing private Universities and open distance learning because of the population.

“Therefore, our own should be how to expand our learning system.

“On the primary education, I think it is not a good story in Nigeria and I tried as a Minister to do something because it is the lynch pin of Education. I tried to bring the state and the National Council of Education on board. Before I handed over, there was a survey that discovered about four million, seven hundred and thirty thousand, five out of school children.

“The Federal government is not in a position to force the children back to school, so I think the National Assembly should take the matter to the National Council of States.

“Whatever the National Council of States does would come to nothing without a Primary School foundation,” he said.

The former Minister of Education was the ninth to be screened on Wednesday by Senators.

Unknown persons, suspected to be hoodlums, have allegedly attacked the All Progressives Congress Secretariat in Zamfara and destroyed property worth millions of Naira, including billboards, posters and windows.

He decried the action and said that the party had since alerted the police over the matter.

“I believe they must have acted on it by now”.

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it had no room for illegal abattoirs, adding that operators of such slaughter slabs would be sanctioned.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment, Mr Abiodun Bamgboye, also warned against unhygienic meat processing and delivery which could endanger the health of residents.
Bamgboye spoke at a meeting between the state ministries of the environment and agriculture and operators of abattoirs and slaughter slabs in Lagos State, a statement said.

The permanent secretary, who was represented by the Director of Environmental Services, Mrs Ronke Odeneye, was said to have insisted that attention would be given to all areas of the food supply chain to ensure Lagosians only consumed wholesome meat.

“He warned that all abattoir operators in the state should ensure they undertake environmental sanitation on Sundays as agreed by the association, adding that wastewater and blood generated from meat processing should be adequately discharged in the drains as well as keep the drains free from silt and overgrown weeds.

“The permanent secretary noted that officers from the environment ministry had visited some abattoirs across the state and observed that they were not up to the required standard, stressing that the present administration was ready to work with the operators to give abattoirs in the state a facelift to meet the required standard,” the statement added.

CrimeWoman Arrested For Putting Pepper In Maid's Private Parts Over N26,000 by nairapark(op): 10:02am On Jul 25, 2019
The Anambra State Police Command has charged one Charity Effiong for allegedly putting pepper in her housemaid’s private parts over the accusation that she stole N26,000.
The 12-year-old housemaid was reportedly battered in the process of eliciting information from her over the missing money.

The incident happened on Nzekwe Street, near the Kwata junction in Awka, the state capital.
The victim, who hails from Ebonyi State, was said to have been stripped naked by the boss, who allegedly put pepper in her private parts.

“The woman later drove her away from the house around 10.30pm. The victim, a primary four pupil, was later found by a passer-by while wandering and crying on the Kwata Road,” a source told our correspondent.

Narrating her ordeal, the victim, who had torture marks on her body, said she was manhandled by her boss on several occasions.

“She (Effiong) always flogs me with an electrical cable. She has her own children but she hardly beats them or send them on errands,” the victim stated.

The woman, who picked up the victim, Amaka Okoye, said it took about 30 minutes for the effect of the pepper to wear off on the girl.

The Secretary, Anambra State Child Protection Network, Hope Okoye, described the incident as a violation of the state’s Child Right Act of 2004.

She stated, “Stuffing Cameroon pepper in the girl’s private parts is another level of abuse, which has psychological, physical and emotional consequences.

“I don’t know why this should be swept under the carpet. We shall take it up. This is an inhuman treatment of the little girl.”

A police source told our correspondent that Effiong had been arrested and detained at the Central Police Station, Awka.

CrimeEnugu: Man Bags Six Years For Diverting N13m Pension Fund by nairapark(op): 1:54pm On Jul 24, 2019
Justice K. I. Okpe of the Enugu State High Court has sentenced one Akpudili Anayo to six years in prison for the diversion of N13m meant for the payment of pension and salaries in the state.
It was gathered that the state government had on May 3, 2017 directed that the May, June and July 2017 pension/salaries of the state pensioners and three other agencies be paid through cheques after physical verification.

At the end of the exercise, it was revealed that the convict, who was an ad hoc staff for the verification in charge of computing the names of the verified civil servants, conspired and used the bank accounts of three fake pensioners, Ngene Somtochukwu, Ani Ifeyinwa and Patience Chimezie, domiciled in Fidelity Bank, Stanbic IBTC and First Bank, respectively, to divert funds meant for the pension and salaries of the civil servants in 17 local government areas of the state.
Following the revelation, the state government petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alleging fraudulent transactions traced to the convict.

Subsequently, the Enugu zonal office of the EFCC on April 8, 2019, arraigned the convict before Justice Okpe on six counts bordering on forgery, impersonation, conspiracy and stealing.

Anayo was said to have pleaded guilty to the six counts preferred against him during his arraignment, while the court convicted him but suspended his sentence till Tuesday.

The charges read in part, “That you, Akpudili Christian Anayo, sometime in June 2017, at Enugu State within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Enugu State, stole the sum of N5,034,435 only through Christian Chimezie Patience’s Fidelity Bank account, property of the Enugu State Government Pension Board, thereby committing an offence of stealing contrary to Section 342 of the Criminal Code Law of the Enugu State, Cap. 30, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004, and punishable under Section 353 of the same law.”

CrimeMurder Suspect Exposed By Phone Accessories In Katsina by nairapark(op): 10:35am On Jul 24, 2019
A 22-year-old man, Aminu Usman, has been arraigned before a Katsina Chief Magistrates’ Court for illegal possession of firearms and homicide.
Usman, who hails from Yammarata village in the Faskari Local Government Area of the state, was brought before the Justice Fadile Dikko on Tuesday.

It was learnt that detectives attached to the Faskari Police Division’s Surveillance Squad arrested Usman after a mobile telephone cover and solar panel charger belonging to a deceased victim of an armed attack were found in his possession.
Other items found on the accused include a Dane gun and a machete suspected to be the murder weapons.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Bello Lawal, gave the name of the victim as Muntari Abdu, 15, said to be a herdsman.

According to the police, on July 16, 2019, Usman allegedly shot Abdu in the abdomen with a gun and used a machete to inflict injuries on him.

Usman, thereafter, dispossessed Abdu of his mobile telephone handset and solar panel charger.

The victim later died from the injuries at the Faskari General Hospital.

The police have since released the corpse to one of his relatives, Abubakar, for burial.

The police prosecutor told the court that Usman’s alleged offences contravened sections 3 (1); 2(a) and 221 of the Firearms Act and Penal Code Law.

He asked the court for more time to enable the police to conclude investigation into the case.

The presiding magistrate granted his request and ordered that Usman be remanded in prison custody until September 10, 2019, when the case comes up for mention.

Crime55-year-old Austrian Urologist Suspected Of Abusing 95 Underage Boys by nairapark(op): 3:59pm On Jul 23, 2019
Austrian investigators have identified 95 mostly underage male patients, who were sexually abused by a doctor, a prosecution spokesman in the city of Wels said on Tuesday.
The 55-year-old urologist has been held in custody since early this year after one patient filed a criminal complaint.

The magnitude of the case emerged when investigators started going through the doctor’s patient files.
The crimes, which were first made public by the Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten newspaper, allegedly took place between 2000 and 2019.

The urologist claimed that he carried out his “treatments” for medical reasons, but prosecutors have commissioned an expert report, which dismissed this explanation.

So far, four of the boys have been found to suffer from long term trauma.

If convicted, the doctor faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years
