Nairaland / General / Signs To Look For When You Need To Replace A Fuel Injector by nancypatrick: 9:30am On Mar 27, 2017
Here are 10 signs to look for when you need to replace a fuel injector or it needs service:
1. Restrictions
A restriction of only 8% to 10% in a single fuel injector can lean out the fuel mixture and cause a misfire.
2. Turbo Troubles
In turbocharged engines, dirty injectors can have a dangerous leaning effect that may lead to engine-damaging detonation.
3. Heat Soak
When the engine is shut off, the injectors undergo heat soak. Because the engine is off, there is no cooling airflow moving through the ports and no fuel flowing through the injectors to wash it away.
4. Increase or Decrease in Long- and Short-Term Fuel Trims Fuel pressure to the injector drops below specifications because of a weak fuel pump, plugged fuel filter or leaky fuel pressure regulator. This can leave the air/fuel mixture too lean, causing the cylinder to misfire.
5. Not Enough Resistance
The magnetic field must be strong enough to overcome the spring pressure and fuel pressure above the pintle, otherwise the injector may not open all the way

Nairaland / General / How To Change Oil Filter(concluding Part) by nancypatrick: 9:33am On Mar 20, 2017
STEP 6
Replace oil plug.
Once all the old oil is drained, replace and tighten the oil plug by hand, making sure it’s not cross-threaded. After the plug is hand-tight, secure it with a wrench. If indicated in your owner’s service manual, use a new drain plug gasket. Never over-tighten the drain plug.
STEP 7
Remove existing oil filter.
Even after you’ve drained the oil, the old oil filter can still contain hot oil. Position the oil pan under the old filter, then be very careful as you use your oil filter wrench to remove the filter. Use a rag to clean the mounting surface on the engine, and make sure the gasket from the old filter is not stuck to it.
STEP 8
Lubricate the new filter and screw into place by hand.
Before installing your GoldNAPAFilter, lightly coat its rubber seal with fresh oil. Check to make sure the seal is properly seated in the filter, then screw on the filter by hand. It’s usually not necessary to tighten the oil filter with the wrench, but check the filter’s instructions to be sure.
STEP 9
Pour in new oil.
Make sure to use a clean funnel, and pour in the amount and type of oil specified for your vehicle. Some oil may not have drained out, and you don’t want to overfill it. When you have completed pouring in the specified amount of oil, don’t forget to replace the cap.
STEP 10
Run the engine and look for leaks.
After you run the engine for a few minutes, check the area around the oil drain plug and the filter for leaks. If you see a leak, cut off the engine and correct it. If you see no leaks, shut off the engine and let it rest a minute or two to give the oil time to drain down.
STEP 11
Check the oil level.
Remove the dipstick. Wipe it off. Replace it. Then remove it again to see if it’s up to the “full mark.” If it’s not full, add the balance of the oil shown in the owner’s service manual. Finish up by removing the chucks and backing off the ramps.
STEP 12
Dispose of old oil and oil filter properly.
Take both to either an authorized used engine oil drop-off center or recycling center to recycle the old oil for you.

Nairaland / General / How To Change Oil Filter by nancypatrick: 9:32am On Mar 15, 2017
STEP 1
Run your engine.
Since warm oil drains faster than cold, run your engine for only a couple of minutes. You never want to get your engine up to full operating temperature, because the oil will be way too hot to safely drain.
STEP 2
Drive your car onto two ramps.
Apply the parking brake. Remove the key. Place chucks behind the wheels for safety. Put on your safety glasses and gloves.
STEP 3
Locate the oil drain plug and place the oil pan below it.
Consult your owner’s service manual for help in locating the oil drain plug, and remember that the oil will flow at an angle into the pan. Loosen the plug with a socket wrench.
STEP 4
Unscrew the plug by hand.
While unscrewing it, push the plug back toward the pan to keep oil from rushing out until you are ready to remove the plug from the hole. Be careful—that oil may be hot!
STEP 5
Drain old oil.
Check your owner’s service manual to find the location of the filler cap on top of your engine. Removing it makes the draining process faster because air can enter from the top.

Nairaland / General / Signs It’s Time The Spark Plugs And Ignition Wires Need Attention by nancypatrick: 9:38am On Feb 13, 2017
Signs it’s time the spark plugs and ignition wires need attention
If you're not keeping track of your mileage, here are some signs your spark plugs or ignition wires are due to be serviced or replaced:
The engine idles roughly
The sound of your car’s engine should be constant and smooth. If your vehicle’s engine is making more noise than usual, have it checked out by a certified mechanic.
You have trouble starting your car in the morning
Dirty #sparkplugs and damaged wires make it difficult or impossible to deliver the spark needed to start the engine. They can even drain power from your battery. If your #car is difficult to start in the morning have your plugs and wires checked by a qualified mechanic.
Your car’s engine misfires
Built-up carbon deposits on your car’s spark plugs can cause one or more cylinders to misfire, resulting in poor performance.
Engine surge or hesitation
Power surges and hesitation are signs your car’s engine is working inefficiently. It can be quite dangerous if they occur while you are in traffic. If you experience this, have your vehicle checked by a professional mechanic right away.
High fuel consumption
Worn, deteriorated spark plugs can decrease fuel economy by as much as 30 per cent. If you notice you’re filling the gas tank more often than usual, you might need new spark plugs.
Lack of acceleration
A sluggish engine can usually be easily fixed with the installation of fresh spark plugs.
Whether your ride is older or nearly new, caring for your car by ensuring you regularly check the oil and visually inspect the major engine components – like the spark plugs and ignition wires - each month can help prolong the life of your vehicle and save you money in the long run

Nairaland / General / Re: Oil Grade Tips by nancypatrick: 1:27pm On Jan 16, 2017
Alright, noted
Nairaland / General / Oil Grade Tips by nancypatrick: 11:01am On Jan 16, 2017
1. Check engine oil at every other fill-up
For an accurate reading of the engine's oil level:
• Run or drive your car for about 15 minutes to warm the oil; then park the car in a level place.
• Turn off the engine and wait 15 minutes to allow the oil in the engine to drain back to the oil pan.
• Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel or rag.
• Reinsert the dipstick, being sure to push it in all the way, then pull it out again to check the oil level. It should be somewhere between the hash marks on the dipstick.
• Add the type and amount of oil as specified in your owner's manual, if necessary.
2. Change the oil frequently
While owner's manuals for today's cars recommend increasingly longer intervals between oil changes, the fact remains — frequent changes flush abrasive dirt and metal particles out of the engine, prolonging its life.
• Most owner's manuals recommend a more frequent interval for "severe conditions".
• To maximize the life of your engine, follow the severe conditions interval recommendations, especially if you drive regularly in stop-and-go traffic.
3. Avoid overfilling your crankcase with oil
Don't overfill your engine crankcase with oil. It can rise into the crankshaft, where air bubbles will get churned into the oil.
• Your oil pump can't do a good job of circulating oil with air bubbles.
• The result can be overheating and stress on engine components.
• Overfilling can also foul your spark plugs. In fact, overfilling is a bad idea with all automotive fluids.
4. Wipe the oil pan plug clean
If you do your own oil changes, clean the drain plug and washer with rags before reinstalling your oil pan.
• Some plugs are magnetized to trap metal particles.
5. Consider adding oil coolers
If you plan to do a lot of towing and your vehicle is not already equipped with coolers, consider having them added.
• Aftermarket engine oil and transmission fluid coolers are simple, low-cost add-ons that operate on the same principle as your car's radiator.
• The fluid flows through them, and many small fins absorb and dissipate heat.
• Cooler operating temperatures of engine oil and transmission fluid can add significantly to the life of your engine and transmission.
6. Synthetic oil is better
Use synthetic lubricant when you change your engine oil. It's more expensive, but your engine will thank you.
• Synthetic oils last longer, stand up to high heat and extreme conditions, and have better flow rates when cold than regular oils.
• Take care, however, not to void your warranty.
• Follow the schedule for oil changes specified in your manual – at least through the warranty period.
7. Heavier is not always better
Use the oil viscosity grade that's recommended in your owner's manual for the temperature range you expect for the coming season.
• Lighter grades (lower viscosity, such as SAE 5W-30), often specified for today's smaller car engines, will deliver easier starts and better engine protection in winter and improved gas mileage throughout the year, thanks to less internal engine friction.
• Do not use a heavy grade of oil in cold winter climates or you will risk damage to your engine.

Nairaland / General / Brake Pad Maintenance by nancypatrick: 12:32pm On Jan 10, 2017
If your brakes are acting up, call us at 08056464658 for a free brake inspection today.
If you don’t know how brakes work, here’s a quick take on what happens when you press the brake pedal.
When you need to slow or stop your car and press the brake pedal, it pushes a plunger in the master cylinder that releases brake fluids. This fluid is forced into the caliper where it presses against a piston. The piston squeezes the brake pads down against the rotor which is attached to the wheel and causes the wheel to slow down or stop.
Tips on #BrakePads and Rotors Maintenance
1 Avoid lifetime #brakepads:#Brakepads come into direct contact with the rotors, the material your #brakepads are made of is important. Lifetime #brakepads are made of metal. Metallic and semi-metallic #brakepads are noisier and also increase the rate of rotor wear. By choosing ceramic or other non-metallic brake pads, you will have to replace your #brakepads more often but should reduce the need for more frequent rotor replacement. Rotors are a much more costly repair than #brakepad replacement.
2 Choose high quality rotors:You may be tempted to go for a cheaper rotor to save money, but this can cost you in the long run. Low cost imported rotors are usually much thinner than quality parts and can require more frequent replacement because of cracking and inability to properly dissipate heat. When you have #brakepads replaced, rotors are usually lathed and turned, but if they are thin to start with, this option will be limited. Ask for professional grade rotors and choose slotted or vented rotors to reduce heat damage.
3 Don’t ride your brakes:Overuse of your brakes can cause you to need more frequent brake pad and rotor replacements. If you routinely ride your brakes and/or make hard stops from higher speeds, you are likely putting excessive wear and tear on your brakes. Both of these actions force your rotors to heat up fast which encourages warping and faster wear-down. You should brake slowly, well in advance and, if you’re on an incline, gear down and let the engine slow your vehicle rather than riding your brakes.
4 Consider a non-standard rotor like a cryogenic:To further protect your brake system and reduce the frequency of rotor replacement, consider a high-tech option like a cryogenically treated rotor.Cryogenic treating slowly cools metal rotors to 300 degrees below zero, then returns them to room temperature, then treats them at high heat. This refines the metal at an atomic level and dramatically increases heat, fade and crack resistance, helps rotors last two to three times longer, reduces frequency #brakepad replacement and improves brake performance.
5 Drive gently after a #brakepad or rotor replacement: After any brake repair – whether it’s pad, rotor or caliper replacement – you should “bed” the brakes. This is a process that wears them in properly and increases the life of your replaced components, reduces brake noise, brake system vibration (called judder) and brake dust. After a brake job, your brakes won’t have as much power the first few times they are applied. After using them a few times at lower speeds and ensuring the brakes are working properly, do the following:
#1 Pick a strip of road and day/time with light traffic where you can get up to 60 mph and then brake without causing trouble for others on the road. Get up to 60 miles per hour and gently apply the brakes a few times to gradually increase the temperature on the brakes.
#2 Make about 10 stops that take you from about 60 mph down to about 20 mph. You want these to be hard stops but not so hard that you squeal to a stop or engage the ABS. Do not come to a complete stop, but after you get down to 20 mph, immediately increase speed back to 60. There may be some smoke or a strong smell from the brakes.
#3 After your last 60 to 20 mph slow down, drive for a few minutes without breaking so the brakes can cool down.
If you’ve got a brake warning light showing, come in for a free brake inspection without delay. Warning lights vary by vehicle manufacturer but may simply say BRAKE, ABS or be a circle with an exclamation point inside and with parentheses on either side of the circle.

Car seat safety: Avoid 10 common mistakes
Car seat safety isn't child's play. Understand 10 common mistakes parents make when installing and using car seats.
Car seat safety is crucial for protecting your child during travel, but knowing how to safely buckle up your child as he or she grows can be difficult. Check out 10 common mistakes parents often make when it comes to car seat safety — and how to avoid them.
1. Getting a used car seat without researching its history
If you're considering a used car seat for your child, make sure the car seat:
• Comes with instructions and a label showing the manufacture date and model number
• Hasn't been recalled
• Isn't expired or more than 6 years old
• Has no visible damage or missing parts
• Has never been in a moderate or severe crash
If you don't know the car seat's history, don't use it.
2. Placing the car seat in the wrong spot
The safest place for your child's car seat is the back seat, away from active air bags. If the car seat is placed in the front seat and the air bag inflates, it could hit the back of a rear-facing car seat right where your child's head is and cause a serious or fatal injury. A child who rides in a forward-facing car seat could also be harmed by an air bag. If it's necessary for a child to travel in a vehicle with only one row of seats, deactivate the front air bags or install a power switch to prevent air bag deployment during a crash.
If you're placing only one car seat in the back seat, install it in the centre of the seat if a good fit is possible rather than next to a door to minimize the risk of injury during a crash.
3. Using the car seat as a replacement crib
A car seat is designed to protect your child during travel. It's not for use as a replacement crib in your home. A 2009 study showed that sitting upright in a car seat might compress a newborn's chest and lead to lower levels of oxygen. Even mild airway obstruction can impair a child's development. Sitting in a car seat for lengthy periods can also contribute to the development of a flat spot on the back of your baby's head and worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) a chronic digestive disease. In addition, a child can easily be injured by falling out of an improperly used car seat or while sitting in a car seat that falls from an elevated surface, such as a table. Although it's essential to buckle your child into a car seat during travel, don't let your child sleep or relax in the car seat for long periods of time out of the car.
4. Incorrectly installing the car seat or buckling up your child
Before you install a car seat, read the manufacturer's instructions and the section on car seats in the vehicle's owners manual. Make sure the seat is tightly secured allowing no more than 1 inch of movement from side to side or front to back when grasped at the bottom near the attachment points and facing the correct direction. If you're using an infant-only seat or a convertible seat in the rear-facing position, keep these tips in mind:
• Use the harness slots described in the car seat's instruction manual, usually those at or below the child's shoulders.
• Place the harness or chest clip even with your child's armpits not the abdomen or neck. Make sure the straps and harness lie flat against your child's chest and over his or her hips with no slack.
Position the car seat's carrying handle according to the manufacturer's instructions.
5. Reclining your child at the incorrect angle
In the rear-facing position, recline the car seat according to the manufacturer's instructions so that your child's head doesn't flop forward. Many seats include angle indicators or adjusters. You can also place a tightly rolled towel under the seat's front edge to achieve the right angle. To prevent slouching, place tightly rolled baby blankets alongside your newborn. If necessary, place a rolled washcloth between the crotch strap and your baby to prevent slouching. Don't use any additional products unless they came with the car seat or from the manufacturer.

Nairaland / General / Why Are #seatbelts So Important? by nancypatrick: 12:05pm On Dec 13, 2016
Why Are #Seatbelts so Important?
Using a #seatbelt in a vehicle will avoid a high percentage of deaths caused by traffic accidents, this is what investigations and studies say. It has been proven that the #seatbelt is the most efficient security tool to prevent any consequences of a traffic accident. This article explain the reasons why #seatbelts are so important. Always wear it and protect your life on the road.

1 The #seatbelt's main function is to subject and keep the passenger in place to minimize wounds in case of collision, avoiding the person flying off, getting hit by hard elements inside the car and getting moved around the car. Remember the safety belt is a life insurance, so don't forget, always tie your belt and drive safely

2 It doesn't matter if you're going for a short journey, medium or long distance, in the city, on a highway, etc. it's mandatory to always wear your #seatbelt as the majority of traffic accidents that happen are unpredictable, and you never know if you're going to be in this situation at any time

3 You should also take into account, that the use of #seatbelts is as important in the back seats as in the front seats of a vehicle. Wearing #seatbelts in the back not only protects passengers who are sitting there, but also reduces risk in the driver and co-driver's death in the event of an accident. It's proven that a passenger weighing 50 kg (110lb) who is travelling at the back of a vehicle circulating at 31 mph can produce strength to up to 6613lb directed to the front seats.

4 To understand the importance of wearing your #seatbelt it's necessary to know what happens in a car's interior in case of an accident. At the moment there's a collision, there are two impacts on the vehicle: the first is the actual collision, and these condis the collision of the car occupants which can throw them out of it. Think that when you crash, the vehicle stops abruptly but passengers are still travelling at the same speed, and the impact can even be mortal.
5 Before starting your vehicle, it's fundamental to dedicate some seconds to put our #seatbelts on correctly. The bottom part of the belt must always be on top of your thighs and never on the abdomen. It's also important to adjust the height of the top part of the belt so it's not too high or low, the correct position is to adjust it so the belt leans slightly on your shoulder and is totally centered
All these are the reasons why wearing a #seatbelt is essential to protect your life behind the wheel and of those who are with you in the car and, of course, cannot be substituted with other methods. Nairaland / General / Why Exactly Are Airbags So Important To Have In A Car? by nancypatrick: 9:37am On Dec 05, 2016
Good Morning Viewers!
Why exactly are airbags so important to have in a car?
Airbags are designed to minimize the harm done to a person during a collision.
The idea is that the airbag inflates at the moment of impact to provide a soft cushion, which your body will strike. The purpose of the airbag is to absorb the shock of the impact without actually damaging you. They prevent you from getting injured by a 'it could be worse' system - you can either bash your head on the nice pillow of air which doesn't hurt that much or bash your head on the steering wheel, which will.

Airbags need to be coupled with seat belts to be effective - the seat belt is designed to restrain you while the airbag takes the force of the impact. This is why they are usually referred to as supplementary restraint systems as they supplement the seat belts. They are not much good by themselves. Airbags do work well in controlled conditions but they are not quite as effective out in the real world due to differing conditions and differing crashes.

An airbag does not need to protect you from shattering glass, by the way. This is mostly because the glass in vehicles is tempered, and sandwiched between two sheets of plastic. During a collision, glass will usually shatter into small pieces without sharp edges, but the majority is held in place by the plastic laminate
One of the sources of injury in an accident is the whiplash effect. When you get into an accident, the car suddenly stops, but you keep moving forward (the assumption most of the time is that the car is moving forward). The seat belt does the work of stopping you from hitting the steering wheel or going out through the windshield. The front driver and passenger airbag supplements the seat belt by limiting your forward motion even further.
Take note - supplement, because you could actually injure yourself further due to the airbag by not wearing your seat belt. Besides preventing serious injuries, they have saved countless lives.
There are two general types of air bags: Frontal and side-impact.
Frontal air bags are designed to keep the driver and front passenger from hitting the interior of the vehicle.

Side-impact air bags are designed to protect your head and/or chest from impact, and unlike frontal bags, can even offer protection in the case of a rollover

Nairaland / General / Car Security by nancypatrick: 11:47am On Nov 29, 2016
Eight great car security tips
In Nigeria, #car crime is a depressingly common occurrence – and partly responsible for the price we pay for car insurance. But there are security measures that can easily be taken to help prevent you becoming a victim. And what’s more, some of these measures could also get you a reduction in the cost of car insurance.
1. Car alarm Car alarms aren’t just about waking the neighbours at three in the morning when a big lorry trundles past. They’re also about alerting you to the fact that some unscrupulous so-and-so could be meddling with your motor. Although they can’t physically stop a car (or valuables kept inside) from being stolen, a thief will likely think twice before tackling a set of wheels that he or she knows will get everyone’s attention if the alarm’s set off. The threat of a piercing sound and flashing lights is a powerful deterrent, and some alarms also come with a pager to alert you if they are activated.
Most modern cars come pre-equipped with an alarm. If you drive an older vehicle, getting an alarm professionally fitted will help secure your car and could result in cheaper car insurance.
2. Car immobiliser An immobiliser is an electronic device which prevents a car from being started by someone who doesn’t have the proper key. Although an immobiliser won't stop a car from being broken into, it may stop it from being stolen. And even if a thief can somehow start an immobilised car, the extra time this would take would very likely dissuade them from even attempting it.
3. Car tracking systems Car tracking systems require a transmitter to be hidden in your car. If stolen, the vehicle can then be tracked and recovered. There are two main types of tracker: GPS systems can find your car whilst it’s at street level, and VHF systems can find your car even if it’s hidden in an underground car park or storage container. However, tracking systems can be quite expensive, often requiring a significant monthly subscription charge.
4. Steering locks/gearstick & handbrake locks These tough metal locking devices prevent the steering wheel, gearstick or handbrake from being used when the car is not in use. They are relatively cheap though but in general, the more you pay, the better the security. Although not impenetrable to a seasoned car thief, the real value of these locks is as a visual deterrent. Their bright colour (sometimes with flashing lights) lets a thief know that this car will take longer to pinch, so they may as well move along and try their luck on an easier steal.
5. Secure parking If your home has a driveway, or better still a garage, then use it. Cars parked off-street are far less likely to be stolen than those parked on the road. When away from home, try and leave your car in a secure car park – one with a ticket barrier or attendant. If you have to park on the street, do so in a busy, well-lit area, and if at all possible, beneath the gaze of a CCTV camera.
6. Hide valuables It’s not just car thieves you have to worry about, there are plenty of crooks out there who are simply after your valuables. Therefore, never leave expensive goodies out on display within your car - it’s just too tempting for the opportunistic thief. Satnavs, mobile phones, CDs, laptops, briefcases, jackets and sunglasses are all fair game – so make sure you hide them out of sight in the glove compartment or boot.
7. Don’t forget to lock your car This may seem like a no-brainer, but plenty of cars get stolen as a result of forgetful owners. Even if you’re only leaving the car for a short while – at a petrol station, for instance – your vehicle, or any valuables left on the seat, are at a very real risk of theft. The same goes for windows and sunroofs – always close them when you leave the car, no matter how short a time you’re away (the exception, of course, is if you have a pet on board – in which case just leave a small gap. But worse than leaving a car unlocked is leaving a car unlocked and with the key still in the ignition – that’s just making a car thief’s job too easy. So try and get into the habit of checking the door handles every time you leave the car. One more thing – once you get home, don’t leave the car keys on a table near your front door. Thieves have been known to pop a coat hanger through the letterbox to hook the key ring.
8. Marking/etching Marking and etching are ways of stamping your car with a unique identifier. Marking can be as basic as writing on various parts with an ‘invisible’ ultra-violet pen, or as sophisticated as covering the car with thousands of micro dots – each encoded with your identifiable details. Etching involves ingraining your car’s serial number or registration number into the windows and light covers of your car. Of course, none of these methods will stop your car being stolen, but they can act as a deterrent and will certainly help make it more recoverable if stolen.

Nairaland / General / Tips To Consider For A Car Purchase by nancypatrick: 12:39pm On Nov 21, 2016
Here are 10 things to think about as you prepare for and execute a new #car# buy:
1. Do the research: Of course this is a hoary bit of advice, but it holds true every time. Decide on the type of vehicle you need, narrow the list to three, any one of which you could live with, and then get your facts straight on everything from pricing to horsepower.
2. Let the salesperson do most of the talking: Treat car sellers like border guards. Let them ask the questions and only answer those questions. Don’t say you love the car and don’t share anything about how much you can pay – both in terms of the total price and monthly payment. You should know the latter before you set foot in a dealership. Research.
3. Leasing, or stretching out financing payments to seven or eight years because you’re tight for the down payment and even tighter when it comes to the monthly payment: Really think these issues right through to the end of eight years. That is, if you lease, it makes the most sense if you’re swapping out for a new ride every three or four years. If you’re financing over eight, be sure you’re going to love that ride six years from now. Think these things through.
4. Dealer financing: Lots of car makers and their dealers are offering 0.0 per cent AND cash discounts. So look for those. But for other buyers, it may make the most sense to borrow from a low-interest credit line. Do the research.
5. First-of-the month purchases: Sometimes this can be the right call, sometimes not. Just know that as the month winds down and sales targets look tough to meet for certain dealers and manufacturers, richer deals often come out to play.
6. New-year purchases: We discussed this already. There are January exceptions and Deals covered many of them last month.
7. Do the new deal before saying anything about trade-ins: This seems obvious, but many buyers make the mistake of lumping in their trade-in with the new deal. Don’t. Treat both as individual transactions.
8. Going green: Really, is a hybrid what you want? Yes, you’ll save at the pump, but you’re not likely to save enough to recover the hybrid price premium. The marketplace is awash in very good, very fuel-thrifty cars that cost half as much as any hybrid. And diesels? Great torque and terrific fuel economy and range. But diesel pump prices are up a lot this year. That cuts into your fuel economy savings.
9. Play the game: Look, car dealers are very competitive. Visit several and play one against the other. Also dig into the dealer’s reputation for service. That will matter for the next four years of that new-car warranty.
10. Control your emotions: Of course it’s exciting to buy a new car. Enjoy it. Revel it after you’ve done the deal. Treat car buying like I treat emails that really aggravate me. I write my reply, then sit on it for 24 hours. Do the same with a new-car offer. Take it away and sit on it for 24 hours before you pull the trigger. You’ll thank yourself

#REGULAR CHECK UP FOR CARS#

Tip 1
Check and change the oil. No single step will help an engine last more than regular oil and filter changes will. Conversely, nothing will destroy an engine faster than neglecting oil-level checks or fresh-oil changes.

Tip 2
Flush the cooling system and change coolant once a year. A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water will keep the cooling system in good shape and prevent corrosion and deposits from building up inside the cooling system.

Tip 3
Change out transmission and differential oils. While not requiring frequent service, these fluids must be changed according to service intervals. Always use transmission fluid or gear oil of the recommended type and viscosity.

Tip 4
Keep it clean. While washing the outside of the vehicle is obvious, most everything the vehicle ran over can also get stuck to the underside.

Tip 5
Everything with moving parts needs grease to survive. This ball joint went into early retirement due to poor lubrication.

Tip 6
Nothing keeps paint looking good and protected like a coat of quality wax. Apply wax at least every six months.

Tip 7
Driveline components such as u-joints also require regular lubrication. The driveline may have to be removed to access the zerk grease fitting.

Tip 8
Protect the interior plastic by parking the vehicle in the shade, using a window deflector screen, and applying a UV protectant to prevent the plastic and vinyl from drying out.

Tip 9
Inspect, clean, and repack wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease according to service intervals. Wheel bearings and grease are inexpensive compared to spindle and hub replacement, or liberated wheels rolling down the road ahead of you.

Tip 10
Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means it is adept at attracting moisture. Moisture causes components to corrode and fail. Replace fluid and bleed system once a year. Brake fluid is cheap. Calipers, hoses, and sensors are
expensive.

Nairaland / General / Car Maintenance by nancypatrick: 11:32am On Nov 14, 2016
There are times when you really don't have to care much about a car or car maintenance. Take, for example, the classic rental. We're betting that when you rented that nondescript, metallic gray four-door sedan you never once thought about popping the hood to check the fluids or to check the tire pressure. Auto maintenance was the last thing on your mind. On the other hand, you have the car parked in your driveway. You know the one: It has your name (or your favourite bank's name) on the title. You're paying for it (or you've already paid for it). Cars aren't cheap today, and it just makes good sense to look after them. The day we drove home from the dealership, most of us aspired to keep our new car pristine. But plenty of folks have "memory lapses," or, more than likely, they fall back into bad habits when it comes to car maintenance.
Falling into a maintenance rut can be expensive in some situations, really expensive by causing many common car problems. Here's our top 10 list of car maintenance tips people too often don't follow:
1. Check tire pressure
Upward of 90 percent of all the vehicles on the road are driven with improperly inflated tires, and we suspect the majority are underinflated. Driving with low tire pressure can compromise cornering, braking and stability. In a worst-case scenario, incorrect tire pressure can lead to tire failure. And it should come as no surprise that underinflated tires also affect fuel economy and tire life.
Tire pressure changes constantly. This may be caused by a minor leak, but the most common factor in pressure change is ambient temperature. When tire pressure is too low, friction between the road and the tire increases, which increases tire wear. Driving with low tire pressure also can cause tires to overheat, which usually ends in catastrophic failure.
2. Check the oil
You really can't ignore some car maintenance essentials, such as checking the oil level in your vehicle's engine on a regular basis. That should be a no-brainer. Two conditions can cause drops in oil level: burning oil or leaking oil. Either way, if the oil level becomes too low, you're risking major engine damage. Often, the first thing to go – the bearings – is the worst that can happen. If they're toast, you won't go very far before the crankshaft and the connecting rods weld together (we're talking feet here, not miles, if you run out of oil).
Checking oil level (and condition) is not difficult. For the most part, it's a good idea to check the oil every time you gas up, especially if your vehicle is considered high mileage (more than 75,000 miles on the odometer). It's not difficult to check your car's oil and it doesn't even take five minutes.
3. Change the oil and filter regularly
Okay, we've mentioned checking the oil, but how many people postpone oil and filter changes (engine oil, engine oil filters and coolant as well)? Plenty, we'll bet. Maintaining a clean, adequate supply of oil within the engine is absolutely critical for the long-term life of your vehicle. Operating conditions have an effect upon how often you should do an oil and filter change. Seasons have an effect too.
Many of today's cars and light trucks are engineered so that the condition of the oil is monitored based upon your driving habits. When it's time to change the oil, a message (actually, an "electronic nag"wink will be displayed somewhere on the instrument cluster. If not, the owner's manual will clearly spell out when it's time for a change. Oil filters should be changed with the fluid, but at some deep-discount oil-change businesses, they use the cheapest filter they can find. When it comes to oil filters, the words "cheap" and "good" usually cannot be used in the same sentence. Ditto with coolant. Coolant does, in fact, wear out. As a result, the system should be "cleaned" and replenished on a regular basis.
4. Replace brake pads when necessary
Stop-and-go driving (including freeway travel), driving in mountainous terrain, hauling loads or pulling a trailer can severely shorten the lifespan of your brake pads. Mix all or some of them together and your brake pads (particularly the fronts, since they get the most use) will usually wear out quicker than you might imagine. Modern cars and brake pads are virtually all equipped with audible wear sensors. Once worn, the pads will emit healthy squeals, and not only when the brake pedal is depressed. The squawking and squealing will go on continuously, which tells you it's time for a brake pad replacement. If you don't, the rotors will eventually be destroyed. A routine (and inexpensive) brake job then becomes costly.
5. Use the right tires for the season
Unlike some of the fortunate few, many of us live in snow country. Car maintenance in winter is no fun, but neither is being stranded in the cold. Living in cold country means you need the right tires for the season, particularly in the winter. Up north, you'll need appropriate rubber (usually marked "mud and snow" or with a snowflake logo on the sidewall), or you won't get far. Proper tires are mandatory. The same applies to summer driving. Tires engineered for cold weather don't last long in the summer. In fact, they'll wear out in a heartbeat. And that means wasted money.
6. Check the lights
How many times do you take a walk around your car or truck to check the lights? You're not alone. Plenty of folks neglect vehicle lamps, which should be a routine element of car maintenance. Lamps are (obviously) incredibly important, and there's no reason not to check them regularly, since it's a simple process. Turn on the headlights. Check park lamps, high- and low-beam lamps and the license plate light. If your vehicle is equipped with fog or driving lamps, inspect them. Examine the turn signals (all four corners) and follow up with an inspection of the emergency flashers. Back up against a wall where you can see the lights, apply the foot brake and check the brake lights. Place the vehicle in reverse (with the park brake on) and check the backup lights. If any bulbs are burned out, or if there is a lighting problem, it's obviously time to repair. And the repairs aren't difficult or expensive.
7. Don't overload the vehicle
Drive down any road, in any part of the country and you'll see it soon enough: An overwhelmed car or truck filled to the brim with someone's "load" and/or yanking a trailer. Most frequently, you'll see the results at the side of the road, with the hood raised. Often, it's simply a matter of an overtaxed cooling system, but in other cases, we've even examined buckled frames and broken axles.
As you can well imagine, those things cost plenty to fix. It's a lot less costly to simply figure out what load you're carrying (or towing), then cross-reference it against the load capacity decal on the door jamb of your vehicle. Keep in mind that passengers and their luggage are also included in the total "load" figure. If the load is too big, then either reduce the size or rent something more capable of handling it. This is a serious safety issue and shouldn't be taken lightly.
8. Replace worn-out wiper blades
Windshield wipers need regular inspection, because rubber (no matter the blend) deteriorates over time, due to sunlight, ozone, cold weather and other factors. Once the deterioration begins, wiper blades lose the ability to flex and flip over in use. They also crack. Additionally, normal use simply wears down the blade. Once the sharp edge is gone, the squeegee effect of the blade goes away as well. All of those factors prevent the blades from making full contact with the windshield. Wipers can chatter against the glass and, in most cases, the result is a blade that can't clear the windshield effectively. There's only one fix: replace the blades.
9. Repair windshield cracks
Driving with a cracked windshield is an invitation for trouble. Little cracks soon become big cracks and before long, visibility can be impaired. The reality is that windshields suffer damage in varying degrees. Often, car owners ignore a small crack caused by an errant stone, but this small chip can spread on a windshield, particularly in very cold weather. Manufacturers make laminated windshield glass under intense pressure. The glass has very high density, which causes cracks to widen progressively. That means the trouble increases with the extent of the damage. It's far easier (and cheaper) to simply have stone chips and bruises fixed before they spread and become cracks. There are various techniques out there where resins are injected into the cracks with or without vacuum. This process can take a few minutes or last as long an hour, depending upon the chip size. When complete, you can't spot the repair. With cracks, you have no option but to replace the glass. They'll only get bigger with time.
10. Use the right octane fuel
Plenty of drivers overdo it on octane, usually falling for the "if some is good, more is better" line of thinking. In this case, the real rule is to supply whatever octane the engine is rated for nothing more and nothing less. Higher-than-required octane doesn't improve mileage; nor does it yield more power. It only costs you more money. Using poor quality fuel in a vehicle that calls for high octane gas isn't a good idea either. With this approach, the engine management system will sometimes decrease ignition timing, which in turn will decrease your fuel economy (sometimes dramatically). And if it can't decrease the timing enough, there's a chance the engine will experience detonation. The result? Major engine carnage.
Nairaland / General / Tips To Tyre Safety by nancypatrick: 2:05pm On Nov 07, 2016
Safety First
We recommend that you should check the condition of your tyres regularly - at least once a fortnight.
Why should you check your tyres?
Did you know that you are not insured when driving on illegal tyres? If you are involved in an accident and it turns out that you have been driving around on tyres with a tread depth lower than 1.6mm you could find yourself forking out a lot of money on repairs and fines.
Worn tyres significantly impede the performance of your car - low tread depths reduce the effectiveness of braking, steering, and acceleration, all of which are vital in staying safe. What are a few minutes put aside now to check your tyres, when you compare it to your own safety and that of your family?
What Should I Check?

1.Check overall condition of tyres, including inner and outer sidewalls.
2.Check tyre tread depth.
3.Check all tyre pressures.
4.Check signs of irregular wear.
5.Check and examine the spare tyre.
Please contact motomarknig.com or call us on 08056464658 if you require any advice on tyre safety.
Tyre Pressures
A tyre does not have to look flat to be under inflated. To be safe you should check the pressure at least once a fortnight. If you are unsure as to what the correct pressure is for your vehicle, have a look in the Vehicle Manual.
•Always remember that tyre pressure should only be tested when your tyres are cold - a good guideline is to leave them for an hour after driving so that they can cool down.
•If you drive around on under or over inflated tyres, your vehicle's handling will be seriously affected – in most cases the vehicle will become unstable.
•The wrong tyre pressure also increases tyre wear, significantly shortening its lifespan and increasing the chances of the tyre failing whilst driving.
Wheel Alignment
If your tyre is evenly worn across the surface, then this could be a sign of over/under inflation. However, if it is only worn on one edge it is likely to be the result of poor wheel alignment. If this is the case you need to have a professional garage check your tracking.
If you need a service, have a look at the car servicing section of motomarknig.com to book your car in for a service today.
Wheel Balancing
An unbalanced wheel can cause dangerous mechanical damage. All motomarknig.com tyres&wheels centre will balance your wheel as a matter of course after replacing your tyre.
Tread Depth
The current legal limit for car tread depth is 1.6mm (across 75% of the tyre). However, the deeper the tread the more grip you will have when driving. Motomarknig.com advises that you replace your tyres when the tread is less than 3mm.
Spare Tyre
Even if you never use your spare it is still vital that you check that it is in good condition. Check the pressure and the tyre tread periodically.
It is better to discover any problems in a safe and comfortable environment, i.e. at home, than by the roadside.

Nairaland / General / Why Is Vehicle Alignment So Important? by nancypatrick: 12:48pm On Oct 31, 2016
WHY IS VEHICLE ALIGNMENT SO IMPORTANT?
It doesn’t take much to knock a vehicle out of alignment: potholes, curbs and even regular wear and tear can take a toll on your vehicle’s suspension system and steering components. And once that happens, everything—your tires, your vehicle and your hands on the steering wheel will soon feel it
Vehicle alignment plays a critical role in the performance of your vehicle, and here are the three biggest ways:
1. Tire life and savings. When your vehicle’s suspension system is out of alignment, it’s probably going to lead uneven tire wear and that means a shorter life expectancy for your tires. With regular alignment, however, your tires will last longer and save you money.
2. Safety. When your wheels aren’t aligned, it can cause your vehicle to pull right or left, undermining your control and handling.
3. Comfort. Aligned wheels are much safer to drive on, and they also make driving much easier and enjoyable.
How can you tell if your tires need aligning?
• Your vehicle will pull to one side.
• Your front end is shimmying after hitting a bump.
• Your steering wheel will no longer line up straight.
• Your front tires will show signs of uneven wear.
If you’re experiencing any of these signs, you need a vehicle alignment performed by certified technicians. Proper alignments require sophisticated equipment to abide by the manufacturers’ preferred specifications and provide an exact wheel alignment.
At MOTOMARK, our technicians perform computerized alignments that ensure all four wheels are parallel and sitting flat on the road and that your steering wheel is centered.
If you’re not experiencing signs that your vehicle needs an alignment right away, we recommend checking your owner’s manual to learn how often the manufacturer recommends alignments, and also having an alignment with every set of new tires.
