EducationNANMS National Press Statement On The Peaceful Protest At NIMASA Headquarters by NANMSZONE(op): 11:05am On Apr 25, 2025
NANMS National Press Statement on the Peaceful Protest at NIMASA Headquarters

In response to the rising grievances and concerns of maritime students across the country, we, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Maritime Students (NANMS), carried out a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) on Thursday, 24th April 2025.

The protest was driven by years of neglect, limited opportunities for sea-time training, poor cadet welfare, lack of post-academic engagement, and the general disregard for maritime students and their future within the industry.

During the peaceful demonstration, the National President of NANMS, Comr. Omotayo Temitope, alongside two representatives from the South-South zone, were invited for a dialogue session with the Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Mr. Jubril Abba, and other departmental heads at NIMASA.

In the meeting, we laid bare the pressing challenges faced by maritime students, including:

1. Lack of Sea-Time Training and Cadetship Opportunities
NIMASA acknowledged this and informed us that a law is being enacted mandating every vessel operating in Nigerian waters to accept at least two cadets on board. We were assured that this initiative would be fully implemented before the end of the year, with compliance from all shipowners.

2. Capacity Building and Investment in Local Maritime Institutions
On the matter of investing NSDP funds into our local maritime schools and training institutions, NIMASA advised that school managements should formally request for training vessels and necessary equipment, which the agency would consider in its strategic development plans.

3. Non-Availability of Certification
Regarding the delays in issuance of mandatory certifications, the agency revealed there is a technical glitch with their systems, but assured that this would be resolved within two weeks.

4. Improvement of Cadet and Seafarer Welfare
The agency expressed its commitment to improving welfare standards and shared that an MOU has been signed with 16 countries to enable global recognition of Nigerian maritime certifications, thereby opening more international opportunities for Nigerian cadets and seafarers.

5. Scholarship and Sustainable Opportunities
We strongly advocated for scholarship programs, recognition of top-performing students, and sustainable job opportunities beyond ceremonial acknowledgments. The agency received these suggestions positively and promised to review and incorporate them into future programs.

We appreciate the willingness of NIMASA to engage in constructive dialogue and their commitments to resolving these issues. However, NANMS will continue to monitor the implementation of these resolutions closely and ensure that promises made are fulfilled.

This is not just a victory for NANMS, but a beacon of hope for every maritime student in Nigeria. Our goal remains the same — to advocate, protect, and fight for the future of Nigerian maritime professionals.

PRESS RELEASE

NANMS SOUTHWEST CONDEMNS ILLEGAL ASSAULT AND BULLYING OF FCFMT STUDENTS BY NIGERIAN NAVY OFFICERS

The National Association of Nigerian Maritime Students (NANMS) Southwest Zone strongly condemns the unlawful assault and harassment of students of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT) by personnel of the Nigerian Navy stationed at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Reports received from the Student Union Government (SUG) President and other credible sources confirm repeated cases of bullying, physical assault, and intimidation of FCFMT students. Evidence gathered reveals disturbing incidents of brutality that have left several students physically and emotionally traumatized.

On the evening of Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 9:38 PM, NANMS received a report regarding a shocking case of brutality involving officers identified as Olaoluwa Timilehin and Michael—both holding the rank of Ordinary Seaman (OS)—alongside other unidentified officers. These individuals reportedly blocked and brutally assaulted students, leaving some unconscious. Such behavior is reprehensible, unprofessional, and poses a serious threat to the safety and dignity of Nigerian maritime students.

In light of this grave situation, NANMS Southwest demands immediate action from the following authorities:
1. The Honorable Minister of Defense
2. The Chief of Naval Staff
3. The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command
4. The Admiral Superintendent of Naval Dockyard Limited
5. The Nigerian Police Force (NPF)

We urge these authorities to:
1. Launch an Immediate Investigation: Identify all officers involved in this misconduct, ensure they are held accountable, and take appropriate disciplinary and legal actions.
2. Ensure the Safety of Students: Put measures in place to prevent further harassment or assault of FCFMT students and other Nigerian students in the maritime sector.
3. Engage in Dialogue: Facilitate an urgent meeting with NANMS leadership, the management of FCFMT, and Naval Dockyard authorities to address these issues and prevent future occurrences.

NANMS Southwest reminds the Nigerian Navy and other stakeholders of the vital role maritime students play in the nation’s economic and maritime development. These acts of violence undermine our commitment to academic excellence and national growth.

We stand resolutely with the students of FCFMT and affirm our commitment to ensuring their rights, safety, and dignity are protected. NANMS will continue to advocate for justice and will not rest until these incidents are thoroughly addressed.

NANMS Condemns Illegal Invasion, Assault, and Destruction of Property at Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria, Badagry, Lagos

Date: September 1, 2024

The National Association of Nigerian Maritime Students (NANMS) vehemently condemns the illegal invasion, assault, and destruction of properties at the Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria, located in Badagry, Lagos, by unidentified soldiers.

This unprovoked attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday 30th August,2024, has left students, cadets, and staff members traumatized. The soldiers reportedly stormed the institution's premises, wreaking havoc by assaulting students and cadets, and causing extensive damage to the school's properties.

The Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria is a respected institution, committed to the education and training of future maritime professionals in Nigeria. Such an unwarranted attack not only disrupts the academic pursuits of its students but also undermines the security and sanctity of educational institutions across the nation.

NANMS, representing the voice of maritime students nationwide, calls on the relevant authorities, including the Nigerian Army and law enforcement agencies, to urgently investigate this incident. It is imperative that those responsible for this egregious act be identified and brought to justice. We demand immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of all students, cadets, and staff within the institution.

We also urge the federal and state governments to reinforce the protection of educational institutions, which are vital to the growth and development of our nation. The perpetrators of this illegal invasion must not be allowed to escape justice, and the sanctity of our schools must be preserved at all costs.

NANMS stands in solidarity with the students and staff of the Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria during this challenging time. We remain committed to advocating for the rights and safety of maritime students across Nigeria
