He had three projects in Anambra, Bayelsa and Kogi to commission today. Being not omnipresent, he couldn't have been at three places at the same time and he no more has days. Tomorrow is valedictory FEC and Thursday Tinubu's inauguration ceremonies will commence. Less of spite, let us not sound like never fulfilled people. The Bridge has finally been delivered after much years of no worth.
And also in Zamfara (secretariat) and Ogun (wagon factory).

Second Niger Bridge named after Buhari

The president participated virtually in the commissioning of the bridge.

Governors of the south-east region of Nigeria have named the Second Niger Bridge after President Muhammadu Buhari, an official has said.

The bridge was commissioned on Tuesday by Mr Buhari who participated in the event virtually.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the governors took the decision ahead of the commissioning of the project to appreciate Mr Buhari for completing the project after successive administrations failed to do so.

“Following consultations, the governors of the South-east have agreed that the second Niger Bridge shall be named after the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge,” Tolu Ogunlesi, a media aide to Mr Buhari posted on his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Bashir Ahmad, a special assistant to the president on digital communications, also announced that the bridge has been named after Mr Buhari.

“The Second Niger Bridge is to be officially called/known as Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge,” Mr Ahmad wrote on his Twitter handle, Tuesday.

Ejimofor Opara, a media aide to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, told PREMIUM TIMES that Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola, announced the bridge’s new name during the commissioning of the project.

Mr Fashola also participated in the event virtually.

The minister, Mr Opara said, noted that the decision to rename the bridge after Mr Buhari was taken by the governors from the South-east.

The five governors include Mr Soludo (Anambra), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Enugu), Hope Uzodinma (Imo) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).

The bridge

The construction of the new bridge began on 1st September 2018.

The bridge spans from Asaba in Delta State, south-south Nigeria to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State, South-east Nigeria.

Former finance minister, Ani, proclaimed new Obong of Calabar

23rd May 2023

By Adewale Sanyaolu

A former Minister of Finance in the military regime of late General Sani Abacha, Etubom Anthony Ani, has been proclaimed as the new Obong of Calabar.

The proclamation was done on May 22, 2023, by four out of the seven surviving Etuboms who were constituted in 2008 as the original kingmakers of the Efik kingdom.

Chairman of the Etuboms Council and Conclave, Etubom Essien Ekpenyong Efiok, said in a statement on Monday that with this proclamation, the activities for his traditional and church crowning will kick off in earnest.

Others who participated in the selection process include the Secretary of the council, Etubom Micah Archibong, the oldest Etubom of the Palace of the Obong of Calabar, Etubom Okon Etim Asuquo, and the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South Local Government Area, Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon (JP).

The statement noted that out of the seven qualified Etuboms, four were present and their decision was unanimous.

The statement read, “It is my responsibility as the regent and chairman of the surviving Etuboms council of 2008 of the palace of the Obong of Calabar and consequence of Supreme Court judgement that referred to the 2002 constitution.

“No other person apart from me can do the proclamation because I am still alive to take up that responsibility as chairman and in collaboration with other serving Etuboms as of 2008 and since the judgement there is no Obong on the throne. And it is not fair for us to remain for such a long time.

“So, we decided not to waste time and, therefore, bring in the most qualified person to the throne as the Obong of Calabar in the person of His Royal Highness, Etubom Anthony Asuquo Ani. What we have done today is not a parallel thing because they have not complied with the decision of the Supreme Court.

“This is the time we have gotten an Obong and appeal to everyone to be calm and work with the new monarch on the throne as there would be a turn of events for good and the Efiks will feel the impact.”

Culture › Anthony Ani Proclaimed New Obong Of Calabar by naptu2(op): 11:49am On May 23, 2023
Ex-Finance minister, Etubom, proclaimed new Obong of Calabar amidst alleged DSS interference

by Godwin Otang May 23, 2023

Days after some Kingmakers in Calabar revealed plans for the pronouncement of a new Obong Of Calabar, a former Minister of Finance during late General Sani Abacha’s government, Etubom Anthony Ani has been proclaimed as the new Obong of Calabar, amidst shocking revelations indicating the interference of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the traditional power tussle in Cross River State, Nigerian Tribune reports.

This is coming even as shocking revelations are springing up from the feud within the traditional stool: An impeccable source who craved anonymity disclosed to our reporter that a senior DSS official acting under the instructions of an Ex-DSS Boss has detained some of the Kingmakers who are warning the DSS to keep off and have asked their lawyers to sue the State for violating their freedom of assembly and association.

According to the source, “The traditional kingmakers empowered by the Supreme Court have complained about intimidation by the DSS, especially the director Mr John Kola Sokoya who has been acting as an interested party whipping up other security forces within the state.

“Thankfully, the other arms of the armed forces have been acting professionally and refused to interfere but to keep the peace which incidentally was only broken by the show of force by the DSS alone.”

The source added that “The State director has been acting under instructions from the former Director General (DG) Department of State Services ( DSS) Ita Ekpeyong who is an interested party.

“The authentic kingmakers are currently being detained at the pleasure of the state director and have instructed their lawyers to sue the State for infringement of their fundamental rights to freedom of assembly and association naming and joining the State Director personally,” an impeccable source revealed to our correspondent.

However, a statement signed by the regent and Chairman of the surviving Etuboms council of 2008 of the palace of the Obong of Calabar and obtained by our reporter indicated that the proclamation was done on May 23, 2023, by four out of the seven surviving Etuboms as at 2008 who constituted “the original kingmakers” by Etubom Essien Ekpenyong Efiok as Chairman of the Council and Conclave and Etubom Micah Archibong as Secretary.

Others in attendance during the proclamation include Etubom Okon Etim Asuquo, the oldest Etubom of the Palace of the Obong of Calabar and Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon JP, the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South Local Government Area. Out of the seven qualified Etuboms, four were present and their decision was unanimous.

Recall that, in a communique issued by Surviving Members of the Etuboms Traditional Rulers Council of the Palace of the Obong of Calabar of 31st March, 20008, had held a meeting, and called for the selection of a new Obong, for the Efik Kindom, on May 15th, 2023, arguing that the selection process that produced the present king after the January 13th supreme Court judgement was yet not in compliance with the decisions of the court.

The statement by the Etuboms conclave quoted the Chairman of the surviving Etuboms saying, ” It is my responsibility as the regent and chairman of the Surviving Etuboms Council of 2008 of the palace of the Obong of Calabar and consequence of Supreme Court judgement that made reference to the 2002 constitution, to make this proclamation.

“No other person apart from me can do the proclamation because I am still alive to take up that responsibility as chairman and in collaboration with other serving Etuboms as of 2008 and since the judgement, there is no Obong on the throne. And it is not fair for us to remain for such a long time.”

The Chairman further said, “We decided not to waste time and therefore bring in the most qualified person to the throne as the Obong of Calabar in the person of His Royal Highness Etubom Anthony Asuquo Ani. This is the time we have gotten an Obong and appeal to everyone to be calm and work with the new Monarch on the throne as there would be a turn of events for good and the efiks will feel the impact.”

Confirming DSS involvement in the matter, sources from the state DSS office affirmed to our correspondent that, “whatever the sources revealed to you, (our correspondent) is true.”

The source added that though other security agencies have remained neutral and professional on the matter, the DSS has been acting as an interested party in the conflict, thereby creating two factions amongst the Monarchs.

Nigerian Navy town class boats

Sokoto? Ibeno? These are town class boats.

The Nigerian Navy has a naming system for its vessels. Frigates are usually named thunder. For example, NNS Obuma (obuma = thunder in Efik), NNS Aradu (Aradu = thunder in Hausa), NNS Okpabana (okpabana - thunder in Igala), NNS Thunder (thunder = thunder in English).

Landing ship tanks are usually named after crocodiles, for example, NNS Ambe (ambe = crocodile in Tiv), NNS Offiom (offiom = crocodile in Efik) and NNS Kada (kada = crocodile in Hausa).

Our old corvettes, NNS Dorina (Hausa), NNS Otobo (Kalabari), NNS Erinomi (Yoruba) and NNS Enyimiri (Igbo) were also named after hippopotamus , while our new corvettes have English names (NNS Centenary, NNS Unity).

There is a class of patrol boats that are named after towns (and ethnic groups). Some famous examples include:

NNS Ibadan and NNS Ogoja: NNS Ibadan was a minesweeper/patrol boat that was involved in the Civil War. It was in Calabar at the start of the war, so the Biafran Navy seized it. It was commanded by P.J. Odu. The Biafran Navy renamed it BNS Vigilance.

NNS Ibadan was involved in a battle with NNS Ogoja near Bonny. NNS Ogoja was commanded by Akin Aduwo, who would later become the chief of naval staff during the Shagari era. NNS Ogoja severely damaged NNS Ibadan and it caught fire.

The interesting thing was that Akin Aduwo and Paschal Odu were classmates at the academy. Aduwo got on his ship's public address system and told Odu to surrender and he would not be harmed. Instead Odu jumped off the burning ship and swam into the bush. Aduwo saw Odu many years later and asked him why he didn't surrender. Didn't he know that he would not be harmed? Odu replied that he knew that Aduwo would never harm him, but he couldn't speak for Aduwo's subordinates.

The Nigerian Navy put out the fire on NNS Ibadan and towed it to Lagos to present it to General Gowon.

NNS Badagry: is a patrol boat. In 2013 it was engaged in a gun battle with pirates that had captured an oil tanker. The pirates tried to escape and NNS Badagry killed 12 of them before the remaining 4 surrendered.

NNS Andoni is the first made in Nigeria seaward defence boat.

NNS Karaduwa is another made in Nigeria seaward defence boat.

NNS Ibeno was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday.

Others include NNS Sokoto, NNS Oji, NNS Bonny, NNS Bomadi, NNS Burutu and NNS Ose.

A massive fleet of helicopters flew over me yesterday. It was carrying guests from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja to the Dangote Refinery in Ibeju Lekki and then to the Nigerian Naval Dockyard on Victoria Island for the Presidential Fleet Review.

The Nigerian Navy held a summit for chiefs of the naval staff of Gulf of Guinea countries before the fleet review. They are considering establishing a Gulf of Guinea naval task force to combat piracy and other crimes on the seas. Gulf of Guinea countries include Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, the Ivory Coast, Gabon and Congo.

Probably because of all the senior military officers that were arriving the Naval Dockyard, the Nigerian Navy blocked off a section of Ahmadu Bello Way for some hours.

President Muhammadu Buhari attended the fleet review dressed in the uniform of an admiral of the fleet.
